Sometimes Krishnaa hid from His Sakhäs and, unseen by them, He sported in the water here with Srimati Rädhikä, Lalitä, Visäkhä and other priya-narma-sakhés. There is currently a deity of Sri Kapiladeva on the bank of this kunda. Lord Kapila worshipped Svayam Bhagavän Shri Krishna at this place.

Garuda-Govinda

Krishna performed various pastimes at this place, which lies near Saktikarä. One day while grazing the cows, Shri krishna was absorbed in playing here with the Sakhäs. In their play, Krishna made Sridama Sakhä assume the role of Garuda and then He climbed on his back, acting as if the husband of Lakñmi, Näräyana Himself, had mounted Garuda’s back. Even today, one can take darsana of Govinda ji with Sridäma in the role of Garuda.

This location is also connected with Lord Räma’s pastimes. When the serpents released by Meghanätha bound Sri Rämacandra in their coils, He became helpless. Hearing of this from Devarishi Närada, Garuda came to the rescue. As soon as the serpents saw Garuda, they released Sri Rämachandra and fled. This incident left Garuda doubtful as to whether Sri Räma was in fact Bhagavän, the Supreme Lord, but by associating with Mahätmä Kakabhusundi and by receiving darsana of Sri Krishna at the time of Krishna's pastimes, this delusion was removed. At that time, Shri Krishna climbed upon his back and assured him that He was indeed the Supreme Lord. Garuda-Govinda is the place where Garuda had darsana of Shri Govinda, the maintainer of the cows and cowherd boys.

The temple of Shri Säntanu-Bihäri ji and Santanu kunda

Säntanu-kunda is the place where Mahäräja Säntanu performed austerities. Its present name is Satohä, and it is on the Govardhana road about three miles from Mathurä. Mahäräja Säntanu worshipped Bhagavän here with the desire to beget a son. This son became famous as Grandsire Bhisma. Bhsima’s mother was Gangä, however, for a particular reason she left Säntanu Mahäräja. The king then became attracted to Satyavati, who was called Matsyagandhä or Matsyodari, and who possessed great beauty. She was living in the house of a fisherman across the Yamunä opposite Mathurä.

Mahäräja Säntanu desired to marry her, but the fisherman, Däsaräja, was unwilling to give the king his adopted daughter in marriage. He said, “If you accept the condition that the son born from my daughter will be the successor to your kingdom, then you can marry her.” Mahäräja Säntanu refused this proposal for the sake of the crown prince Devavrata (Bhisma), yet his heart felt great sadness. When Prince Devavrata came to know of this, he went to the house of the fisherman and vowed to remain a lifelong brahmachari . He promised that the child born from Matsyodari would ascend the throne. Thus, he was able to arrange for the fisherman’s daughter to marry his father Mahäräja Säntanu. It is believed that while Hastinäpura was Mahäräja Säntanu’s capital, he also had a place of residence here at Säntanu-kunda.

Women who desire a child bathe in this kunda. Behind the temple there, they make a svastika out of cow dung and perform püjä. In the middle of Säntanu-kunda, on a raised hill, is the temple of Säntanu’s worshipful deity, Sri Säntanu-Bihäri ji.

Bahulavana

The charming forest of Bahulävana is full of beauty. According to the Skanda Puran (Mathurä-khanda), Shri Hari’s Sakhi Bahulä resides here – This place is now called Bäti. It lies seven miles west of Mathurä, between Rädhä kunda and Vrindavana. Sankarshan-Kunda and Mäna-Sarovara are two kundas in Bahulävana.

It is popularly believed that any desire of a person who takes bath here will be fulfilled. In the temple on the bank of Sankarshan kunda are deities of Shri krishna, a tiger, a cow, its calf and a brähmana.

According to local lore, a cow named Bahulä was once drinking water from this pond when a fierce tiger attacked and caught her. She assured the tiger that she would return to be eaten after she had first gone to the house of her master, a brähmana, and fed milk to her hungry calf. When she got home, she told her calf to drink milk to his full satisfaction, and told him about her promise to the tiger. However, the calf insisted on going with her without drinking any milk. The brähmana also prepared himself to go alone. He planned to leave the cow and calf at home and give himself to the tiger as food. In the end, all three approached the tiger, each willing to sacrifice himself. At that moment, Shri krishna Himself appeared there, and the tiger underwent a change of heart. By the mercy of Shri krishna, the brähmana returned home safely with his cow and calf.

Sri Rädhä-kunda lies within Bahulävana. On Bahuläasthmi it is customary to take bath in Sri Rädhä-kunda. Large numbers of people assemble to bathe here on that day.

Once, when Shrimati Rädhikä was in Her sulky mood (mäna), She hid Herself in a kuïja here in bahulavana. In separation from Her, Krishna became completely distressed. With the help of the sakhis He was able to find Srimati Rädhikä, and with great difficulty He pacified Her mäna.

Shri Sankarshana Kunda

It is popularly believed that any desire of a person who takes bath here in this Kunda will be fulfilled.
