PRAYERS TO THE QUEEN OF VRNDAVAN- SRILA RUPA GOSWAMI, de Krishna Devi

PRAYERS TO THE QUEEN OF VRNDAVAN- SRILA RUPA GOSWAMI, de Krishna Devi

Sri Prarthana-paddhati [Stavamala]

Srila Rupa Goswami prays:

"O Queen of Vrndavana, O Radharani, Your complexion is like molten gold, Your doe-like eyes are captivatingly restless, a million full and brilliant moons wane before Your lustrous countenance, and a blue sari, having stolen the hue of a fresh rain-laden cloud, has enwrapped Your exquisite form. O Radha, You are the crest-jewel of all the dallying damsels of Vrndavana, fragrant and pristine like a budding jasmine flower. Your sublime form is adorned with priceless jewelry, and you are the best of all the charming and intelligent gopis. You are decorated with all wonderful excellences and surrounded by eight dedicated and beloved cowherd girls known as the asta-sakhis."

"The ambrosia of Your beautiful lips, red as the bimba fruit, is life-giving syrup to Krsna. O Radha, I am rolling on the banks of the Yamuna, my poor heart filled with anticipation, praying to You with all humility. I am guilty of being an offender, a rascal, a useless wretch--yet I beg You to kindly engage me in even the smallest service to Your lotus feet. O most merciful Lady, it will not become You to ignore this most distressed soul, for Your heart is always overflowing with compassion and love."

Sriman Chaitynya Mahäprabhu saw a female and male parrot (Säri and Suka) sitting opposite each other on two branches of a tree, lovingly quarrelling about the glories of the Divine Couple, Sri Rädhä-Krishna..

Suka: My Krishna is Madana-Mohana, the enchanter of Cupid’s mind.

Säri: Yes, He is – as long as my Rädhä is at His left side. Otherwise, He is only Madana (Cupid).

Suka: My Krishna lifted Giriräja (Govardhana) on His finger.

Säri: Because my Rädhä transmitted power into Him; otherwise, how could He have done so?

Suka: My Krishna is the life of the whole universe.

Säri: My Rädhä is the life of that life.

Suka: My Krishna head is beautifully decorated with a peacock feather.

Säri: Only because my Rädhä’s name is marked on that feather.

Suka: The peacock-feather on my Krishna’s head leans to the left.

Säri: Because it wants to bow down to my Rädhä’s feet.

Suka: My Krishna is the moon.

Säri: My Rädhä is the trap that captures that moon.

Suka: There is no need to quarrel uselessly. Let us glorify the Youthful Couple together.

Säri: I happily agree to this.

This loving quarrel between the Suka and Säri is also described in Govinda-Lilämrita. Here, the male parrot says (13.29):

“May our Lord Jagamohana, whose unparalleled beauty plunders the wealth of patience of an innumerable multitude of women, whose world-famous glory astounds even Lakshmi devi, whose strength turns the majestic Govardhana mountain into a child’s toy, who has unlimited qualities, whose simple disposition entertains everyone, and whose glory substantiates the welfare of the entire universe, protect the entire world.”

Hearing this, the female parrot replies (Govinda-Lilämrita 13.30):

“Suka, Sri Rädhikä’s divine love, beauty, dancing, excellent calmness, expertise in music, wealth of good qualities, and poetic compositions, or in other words, Her erudition, are all so attractive that She steals away the heart of Sri Krishna, who enchants the mind of the entire universe.”

The male parrot then says (Sri Caitanya-Caritämåta, Madhyalilä 17.214):

“Dear Säri, all glories to Sri Madana-mohana, the enchanter of Cupid, who carries a flute. He steals the heart of all the women in the entire universe, and enjoys with the gopés.”

Shri Radha Kunda & Shri Shyam Kunda

Thhe Padma Puräëa states:

"yathä rädhä priyä visnoh
tasyäh kundàm priyam tathä
sarva-gopisu sevaikä
visnoratyanta-vallabhä"

“Among all the gopis, Shrimati Rädhä is Shri Krishna präna-vallabhä, the dear most beloved of His life. Similarly, Rädhä’s dear kunda is also extremely dear to Him.”

The Varäha Purän declares:

“O Shri Rädhä-kundaa, O Shri Krishna-kunda, You destroy all sins and award liberation in the form of prema. I bow down to you again and again.” The different Puräns are filled with innumerable descriptions of the glories of these two kundas.

Shri Shri Radha Kunda

In Vraja-Viläsa-Stava (text 53), Srila Raghunätha däsa Gosvämi prays: “Shri Govardhana, is the arena of the nectarean räsa, where the most confidential amorous pastimes of the Divine Couple take place. Because it and other places are situated in Sri Vrindadävana, Vrindavana has become exceedingly charming. Yet the glories of Vrindävana, what to speak of Vraja-mandala’s other pastime places, are not equal to a mere shadow of a particle of the glories of Shri Rädhä-kunda. I take shelter of this Shri Rädhä-kunda, which is more dear to Shri Mukunda than His own life.”

Shri Rädhä-kunda lies in a village named Ärita, about three miles north-east of Govardhana and fourteen miles from Mathurä and Vrindanvana. Aristäsura was a servant of Kamsa who assumed the form of a bull and attacked Krishan with the aim of killing Him, but Krishna killed him instead at this place.

Shri Shri Radha Kunda

At Sri Rädhä-kunda, the Divine Couple, Sri Rädhä-Kunda, perform Their midday pastimes, and freely enjoy a variety of amorous pastimes without obstruction. This is not possible anywhere else. Therefore, Rädhä-kunda is considered to be the topmost place of bhajana, superior even to Nandagaon, Varsänä, Vrindavana and Govardhana. This confidential place, surcharged with the highest and most sublime loving transcendental sentiments, was therefore revealed by Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu Himself, who is endowed with the sentiment and lustre of Sri Rädhä.

Shri Radha Kunda

The appearance of Rädhä-kunda & Syäma-Kunda

Shri Krishna killed Aristäsura during the day. That same night, He met with Shri Rädhikä and His other beloveds here. He was very eager to embrace Srimati Rädhikä, but as soon as He reached out to do so, She jokingly stepped back and said, “Today, You have killed a bull, which belongs to the cow family. You have therefore committed the sin of killing a cow. Please do not touch My pure body.”

Smiling, Krishan answered, “O dear most one, I killed a demon who had deceitfully assumed the form of a bull, so how can sin touch Me?”

Radhika ji insisted, “Whatever he was, he was in the form of a bull when You killed him, so You are definitely guilty of the sin of killing a cow.” The sakhis fully supported Her words.

Shri Krisha asked how He could atone for this sin. Radhika smiled and answered, “The only atonement is to bathe in every holy place in the world.” Hearing this, hri Krishna created a wide kunda simply by striking His heel on the ground. He then summoned all the holy places from all over the planet to come there. Uncountable holy places promptly came before Krishna in their personified forms, and Krishan asked them to enter the kunda as water. Within a moment, the kunda was filled with pure, sacred water.

When Shri Krishan had bathed in that kunda He again tried to embrace Radhika, but in response to the bragging of Her dear most beloved, Shrimati Rädhikä now wanted to manifest a kunda full of water that was larger and more exquisite than Krishna’s. She and Her sakhis stubbornly dug out a very attractive kunda nearby with their bracelets, but not so much as a drop of water appeared in it. Krishna joked that they could take water from His kunda, but radhika ji along with Her innumerable sakhis indignantly prepared themselves to bring water from Mänasi-gaìgä in clay pots.

Shri Krishna signalled to the holy places that they should insist that Radhika ji and Her sakhis fill up their kunda with water from His. The holy places personified prayed to Shrimati Rädhikä and Her sakhis and glorified them in many ways. Thus they pleased Her. She gave them permission to enter Her kunda and immediately, a current of water flowed from Krishna kunda into Rädhä-kunda. With great pleasure, Shri Krishna bathed and sported with Rädhikä and the sakhis in the water of this dear kunda.

These two kunds manifested at midnight on Krishnastmi (the eighth day of the dark moon) in the month of Kärtika; therefore, thousands of people bathe here at midnight on this day, which is known as Bahulästmi.

The Padma Purän states:

“Radiantly beautiful Shri Rädhä-kunda is situated at the foot of Govardhana Hill. Faithful people who bathe here on Krishnastmi in the month of Kärtika receive prema-bhakti and thus serve Shri Rädhä-Kuïjabihäri Shri Hari.”

This same Puräëa also states:

“Unalloyed devotees of Shri Rädhä-Krishn who go to Shri Rädhä- unda on the day of Dépävali in the month of Kärtika are granted a vision of the complete Vrajamandala as well the entire universe.”

Shri shri Shyam Kunda

Some time after Shri Krishn had left for Dwärakä, both kunds disappeared. While uncovering the pastime places of Vraja, Shri Krishna’s great-grandson, Mahäräja Vajranäbha, restored these two kunds under the guidance of Sandilya and other sages. Five thousand years later, however, they had again disappeared.
