Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: ugly avatara
Avatara does not mean a big beard or big hair. We do not like to see such ugly avatara. We kick on their face, this avatara. This is not avatara. Avatara must be mentioned in the sastra. ... As soon as one wants to establish his avatarship by jugglery and magic, kick him out, immediately on the face, directly. Kick him. Let the avatara take steps. I don't mind. If he's avatara, let him kill me, all right. But I shall kick him on his face.

Kirtans in Oxford, UK: Our Distinguished Photographers
Our kirtan group has the great luck to have two first-class photographers as it's members, who've kindly lent their talents for this blog over the last few years. Claire Williams (above) gained a distinction in her photography diploma last year and is planning to take a degree in photography next. Claire is presently in India taking photos for the Raleigh India Expedition, for young people. You can see her photographs on their blog here
India must be pretty much a photographer's paradise, with so much colour, sunlight and unusual sights.
Pavel Tomanec gained a distinction in his BA in photography last year from Westminster University. And funnily enough - he's also in India. Some people have all the luck!
Anyway, we miss them, and had nobody to take photos of March's kirtan which is a shame as it was very picturesque.

Although a father, mother, brother or friend may sometimes punish one as a well-wisher, they never punish their subordinate like this. But because You are the most worshipable Lord, I regard the punishment You have given me as most exalted.
PURPORT
Punishment meted out by the Supreme Personality of Godhead is accepted by the devotee as the greatest mercy.
tat te 'nukampāḿ susamīkṣamāṇo
bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaḿ vipākam
hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te

"One who seeks Your compassion and thus tolerates all kinds of adverse conditions due to the karma of his past deeds, who engages always in Your devotional service with his mind, words and body, and who always offers obeisances to You is certainly a bona fide candidate for liberation." (Bhāg. 10.14.8) A devotee knows that so-called punishment by the Supreme Personality of Godhead is only His favor to correct His devotee and bring him to the right path. Therefore the punishment awarded by the Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot be compared to even the greatest benefit awarded by one's material father, mother, brother or friend.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '388' from The Yellow Submarine
4:10 A.M.
I woke with my body covered with tiny mosquito bites despite the mosquito netting. I didn’t wake up until Baladeva came in to get me at three o’clock. The dream lingered with me and stayed on my mind during my japa. It was a distraction. It wasn’t a troubling dream, but just too much interesting for me to concentrate on the syllables. But eventually the dream faded, and my chanting went all right. I was awake and alert. I moved rapidly through the rounds. So far I have done eight rounds. Our schedule here is that I continue to chant my rounds all morning and do my writing until lunch and only then do I meet with the devotees. Yesterday afternoon we went swimming in the ocean, and today we plan to do a television show. But the great disappointment is that the internet is not functioning properly and only half of the journal is being posted every day. I can’t understand the mechanics of it, but Baladeva said the second half of the journal will be posted on the second day and so the material won’t be lost. Yesterday my long poem was not posted. I hope it will be posted today.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Moments of Vapuh Spiritual Gems' from The Yellow Submarine
Prabhupada Smaranam
This picture was taken in Germany on a chilly summer morning. If one can make humble eye contact with his spiritual master it is a wonderful thing. One of his hardworking disciples who was making contact with Srila Prabhupada by vani (or instructions) could be doing even more service than I was by staring into the eyes of my guru. But there is something to be said for the moment of vapuh (direct bodily contact)—in this case by exchange of glances. Vapuh produces indelible impressions. The vapuh is like the precious gems that you keep locked in your jewel box and take out from time to time whenever you are in need of inspiration or intimacy.

Dandavats.com: Love and Marriage? Give me Prasada and Kirtan any Day!
By Praghosa Dasa
Ever since my experience a few years ago with Mahasrngha prabhu I had wanted to again go on a prasadam distribution excursion from Sri Dham Mayapur. I had known for quite some time that Shastra prabhu was more or less going out daily with his team on Harinam to the surrounding villages so I also wanted to experience a taste of that too.
Dandavats.com: Visit of West Bengal’s Chief Justice to Sridham Mayapur - pics
By Praghosa dasa
On Sunday the 21st of March the new Chief Justice for West Bengal visited Sridham Mayapur. Mr Justice Mohit Shantilal Shah assumed his new role on Christmas day last so he is only in the role for 3 months but none the less was eager to visit ISKCON Mayapur. He arrived along with his wife around 11am and they left after lunch around 1.30pm.
Akrura das, Gita Coaching: THE BEST HELP
When helping others, learn to not take on their problems on yourself, but help them take responsibility for their problems and goals.
The best way to help others is to help them help themselves.
Give a man a food, you feed him for a day. Teach him how to produce food, you feed him for a lifetime.
Change a perception of your role in people's lives from nanny to trainer.
Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Who Is This Young Man?
While I was visiting Nepal recently I found out about this incident:
A few years ago, while distributing books in Kathmandu, Nepal, a devotee approached a young man in his mid teens named Suvarna and tried to convince him to take a book. Suvarna wasn't interested. But the book distributor was new at it and became forceful, demanding that Suvarna take a book.
"This book saved me, and it can save you, too! Now please take it and give a donation."
Suvarna relented, took the book and three others, and gave a donation, thinking, "These people are poor; let me help them." Then he went to visit a relative in another city. When he became bored, he remembered the books and thought, "I bought them. I might as well read them." While reading, he found the books to be exactly what he was looking for.
That same day he went back to Kathmandu to look for the devotees. He couldn't find them. Every day for three months he went back to the place where he had met them, hoping he would see them again. Then one day he saw two devotees and rushed over to them, expressing how happy he was to see devotees again. They had a book table, so he took some books and started distributing them to the passersby. The devotees were trying to talk to him, but he would just distribute books and give the devotees the laxmi. He did this for three days. They were very surprised to see his enthusiasm and invited him to their center. Soon he moved in. Suvarna's parents were upset at first, but when they met Patri Prabhu, who oversees the preaching in Kathmandu, they were satisfied that their son was in good hands.
It turns out that Bhakta Suvarna, though quite young, had already led an incredible life. When he was fifteen he entered a a national poetry competition, with 4,000 participants. Among the contestants were educated citizens, including professors and graduate students, and anyone else that had any poetic ability. Suvarna was among them. Gradually, as the competition progressed, 300 were left, then 150, 100, 50, 30, 20, 10, 5, and 3. Suvarna was among the last 3. Whoever wrote the best poem would be the national poetry champion. He won! The government awarded him $10,000 and a scholarship to any university he choose, which would be good until he was thirty.
Suvarna was a sharp boy, so instead of spending the money he bought shares in a printing company. The company prospered, and over the next three years it became one of the most prominent printing companies in Nepal. Now, at seventeen, Suvarna owns 70% of the company. There are two other shareholders: one is a previous Governor of Nepal and the other is the representative of Google and BBC each having 15% of the share of the company. The name of the printing company is "Gauranga Printing."
Also, at the age of 14 and 15 Suvarna would regularly write articles for newspapers and magazines. But now he's a devotee and is interested only in Krsna, so he stopped writing those articles. I encouraged him to write for BTG.
Recently Suvarna took up some managerial responsibility at one of the Kathmandu centers. He regularly distributes books and is quite good at it.
Although so young, he is well known throughout Nepal due to his extraordinary achievements. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about this amazing personality.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Competitionless
“In the material world there is keen competition between animals, men, communities and even nations in an attempt to gratify the senses, but the devotees of the Lord are above all this. Devotees have no need to compete with materialists because they are on the path back to Godhead, back home where everything is eternal, full and blissful. Such transcendentalists are a hundred percent nonenvious and are therefore pure in heart. Because everyone in the material world is envious, there is competition. The devotees of the Lord are not only free from all material envy, but they are also kind to everyone in an attempt to establish a competitionless society with God in the center.”
Teachings Of Lord Chaitanya 23: Why Study the Vedanta-sutra?
“Having given up all desire to compete with other men, they suddenly wake up and find that the joy of God is everywhere, and they are able to exult in the virtues and goodness of others more than ever they could have done in their own. They are so dazzled by the reflection of God in the souls of the men they live with that they no longer have any power to condemn anything that they see in another.”

Dandavats.com: The Passing of Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Maharaj
Pusta Krishna das: Today, March 27, 2010, a great beacon of Krishna consciousness passed from this world in Kolkata, India. His samadhi is scheduled to be in Nabadwip at the Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math later today.
Japa Group: Keep Trying To Hear
As we make our way on the journey of Japa, we sometimes forget about listening to the Holy names - our mind becomes louder and we tend to listen to that. By persistent effort we can bring ourselves back to the sound and continue to make progress. The importance of hearing the Holy names cannot be overstated. Hearing is the first process in devotional service and the most important....so keep trying to hear the Holy names beginning with the next mantra you chant and then the next. Persistence pays off and we will soon be absorbed in the Lord's spiritual energy.
I hope your Japa is going well this week and that you can continue to hear the Holy names.
