Japa Group: The Lord's Feelings

Hare Krsna my dear devotees. I hope your chanting is going well and you are able to concentrate on the Lords Holy Names. Gaura Purnima is coming soon and we may think about how much we need this Harinam Sankirtan and how important is to spread the Lords holy names throughout the world. Every single day we see in peoples eyes how they need this chanting, even the ones who have money & fame....follow a vegetarian diet and so on, they feel empty sometimes because they still need a relationship with the Lord.

We forget sometimes how we were before this practice and how we were eager to experience this love between Krsna and us, now we feel more confident and we don't even fear death so much, just because we feel safe in the Lords hands - we know that when we are in danger the Lord will hear our prayers. He will feel touched by our service, our chanting and we will be protected. Here follows a text I received by email from a devotee, I just felt like sharing with you because it's very beautiful.

The Lord's Feelings Toward Someone Who Chants His Name

Srila Prabhupada told us that the chanting means to address the Lord. We talk to Him by calling His name.

But we may wonder, How does the Lord feel about those who chant? Does He notice them?

Yes. Krsna notices chanters even if they don't notice Him - and He thinks of them. As Srila Vishvanath Chakravarti Thakura said, "When someone chants the Lord's name, the Lord's mind dwells on him. Krishna thinks, 'This person belongs to Me. I will always protect him!' "

Srila Sridhara Swami explains in this connection: "When the Lord heard that Ajamila was chanting His name, He thought about Ajamila deeply and then ordered the Visnudutas to bring him to Him. How much more, then, will the Lord remember a person who chants His Name with a service attitude?"

Let us not try to see the Lord.
Let Him see us.
And let us not try to hear His voice in the beginning.
Let Him hear us first.
Then one day the morning will dawn
when we hear him say:
"You are Mine."

HH Sacinandana Swami's newsletter Amrta-vani

I pray so we can all have this feeling that Krsna accepts our chanting, that He looks at us as His servant so we may have this love exchange and feel His blessings every minute of our lives.

May your chanting be connected to the Supreme, through your heart in a way that the sound vibration of the holy names are able to subdue your mind.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: see to the prime cause

I have received report from Mr. Parikh and others that they are enamored by your behavior, your character, and your devotion. In the newspaper cuttings also they gave such hints. In other words, everyone is appreciating your presentation. Please keep up this standard of behavior. Do not make any artificial discrepancies amongst yourselves because you are acting on a very responsible business. Perhaps you know that there are many political parties in a country, but when the country's total responsibility has to be executed, they become combined. To have some little disagreements amongst yourselves is not very unnatural because we are all individual beings. But as we are all working on behalf of Krishna we should always forget our personal interests and see to the prime cause.

Prabhupada Smaranam
In this picture you can hardly see Prabhupada but I picked it because it shows all the people who gathered to hear him at a pandal. They appeared to be mostly Indian people so it may have occurred in India. It is not as big as the ones where twenty or thirty thousand people attended. He held many pandal lectures. He spread Krishna consciousness this way personally and set the example that his followers should also speak before large audiences and give them the message of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. You can see his disciples gathered with him near the raised vyasasana where he sits. It is nice to recall Srila Prabhupada lecturing like this. As I write this "Prabhupada Smaranam" while looking at the picture, I am experiencing a headache and it is draining my enthusiasm and concentration to write. It also is proving to me why I don't hold these lectures to large audiences. I cannot do it because I often have headaches when the lecture is scheduled.

Ah, let us look at Srila Prabhupada in the pandal. All we can see is a small image. But when the event took place he was a dominant figure, his voice booming out over the microphone and loudspeakers. "You have rejected your Krishna!" He chastised them. He told them to stop worshipping demigods. Quoted extensively from Bhagavad-gita. The Gita is the authority. Before he began his lecture, his disciples held a rousing kirtana. The people had to hear the Hare Krishna mantra. Unblock their ears. Prabhupada was a "Nrsimha guru" like his Guru Maharaja. It was hard to raise the materialistic hodge-podge audience but they gave him respect. They were impressed that he had recruited so many "dancing white elephants". He was proud of his western disciples. During his lifetime Prabhupada didn't have many Indian disciples. The pandal looks colorful but fragile with the poles holding up the cloths. Speak to them Prabhupada, tell them Krishna's message. I was present during some of his pandal lectures and I believed whatever he said. I hoped he would convince the audience. But you could not expect many of these middle-aged Indians to become initiated disciples. At best, they became life members and gave—how much was it? 1111 rupees to receive all the books? Life membership wasn't well organized. They were promised they could stay free in an ISKCON center anywhere in the world but when they showed up in say, Denver, Colorado, there was no guestroom for them. He looks small but he is big. He controls all his "big" disciples. They do what he says, as best they can. But they quarrel with one another. I remember Prabhupada. He is leading me today even though I am not feeling so well.

Mayapuris, USA: Live Webcast – 12 Hour Kirtan NYC

12 Hour Kirtan - February 2010

Join Gaura Vani, Ananta & Acyuta, The Mayapuris and many friends this Saturday, February 20th for 12 hours of kirtan (10am-10pm) for the second montly event.

This time we're celebrating the birthday of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the father and founder of the kirtan movement we all enjoy so much today. Sri Caitanya created a spiritual revolution around the chanting of the divine names that swept the Indian sub-continent in the 15th century. This continues to change our lives even today, more than 500 years later.

Yadu's Message

Gopinagar, West Bengal

I sat with Yadubhar on a shuttle bus to the village mentioned above for mere two hour drive to somewhere between Mayapura and Kolkata. The engagement was a 24 hour kirtan in the native village of Ajamil, a long time friend and veteran of kirtan.

Yadubhar, himself a seasoned devotee of bhakti for 40 years talked about the process of photo-assignments and film assignments (his field of expertise) and of journal writing and of "murdering the darlings." What he was referring to was that part of the process in presenting an assignment before it goes public, you get your work assessed. At that time you have an objective audience, maybe a group of critical well-wishers to view the material. "It's what the experts do. Even great directors of film are constantly trying to find what the audience will find pleasing."

In anything we do it is not a bad idea to get a kind of clearance, a kind of okay or approval as we all should hope to approach excellence. We may "think" we have done well because we are attached to our results or "our darlings".

After arriving at Gopinagar, settling down and eating great Bengali subjee (vegetable dishes) our turn for kirtan began. Local villagers came to chant under a pandal (tent). Men tended to stand at the periphery for hours while women sat closer to the kirtan group in a lotus posture. I prided myself in doing the lotus position for 5 straight hours while leading or supporting the kirtain sessions.

These legs which like to walk don't necessarily care for a long lotus stretch. Let's say some empowerment came my way. We can't do anything on our own strength. We can only take credit for making the right choice.

Torpedo

Mayapura, West Bengal

The sky had not blessed the land of Bengal for weeks with moisture. Now finally overnight a serious rain had come to Benedict. It cleansed the air and reduced the heat substantially. It was a nice change.

In the Bhagavad-Gita weather and in, particular, the wind is compared to the mind. I dealt with several human minds today which changed like the wind adding to the color of the days affairs. In my efforts to please the festival stage coordinator, dear friend Pragosh from Ireland, I started work on a second drama for the hundreds of pilgrims coming to partake in transcendental drama. It meant wrestling with actors' minds, a pleasant challenge.

I was committed to the prescribed duty of putting on a decent show but it meant forsaking another prescribed duty- attending the last day of the gathering of great souls in an annual AGM for our society. When one volunteer decided not to participate at the last moment and another one is asked by myself to drop from the cast (not type-cast) and a third one leaves us hanging on the edge of not being sure abut being the right talent, it makes for an interesting day.

I knew intuitively that all things would work their way out in the end. Convictions must always be strong and then mental mountain ranges can be crossed with relative ease.

Such inspiration comes from watching or studying the life of "guru". Determination must be like a torpedo always.

Japa Group: Hopeful For Improving My Japa

I'm always hopeful for improving my japa. And improve I do. I get better sessions. I get sessions without a headache. I get sessions where I wake up early and get a good head start. So I experience ups and downs and go on hoping and go on with determination overall. And I go on with faith in the scriptures. You can call it academic faith or you can even call it blind faith. Prabhupada said he distributed books on blind faith because his spiritual master told him to. I have a similar "blind faith" that the chanting of the holy names is the only way to attain God consciousness in this age.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Is There An Ecological Consciousness?

Click here to read the full piece from the New York Times

But it rubs up against a fundamental problem of ecopsychology: even if we can establish that as we move further into an urban, technological future, we move further away from the elemental forces that shaped our minds, how do we get back in touch with them?

That question preoccupied Gregory Bateson, a major influence on ecopsychologists and something of a lost giant of 20th-century intellectual history. Bateson, an anthropologist by training, conducted fieldwork in Bali with Margaret Mead, his wife of 14 years, in the 1930s, but in midcareer he moved away from conventional ethnology and began conducting studies in areas like animal communication, social psychology, comparative anatomy, aesthetics and psychiatry. But what most interested Bateson, as the title of his 1972 book "Steps to an Ecology of Mind" suggests, were complex systems.

It was Bateson's belief that the tendency to think of mind and nature as separate indicated a flaw at the core of human consciousness. Writing several years after Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring," at a time when the budding environmental movement was focused on the practical work of curbing DDT and other chemical pollutants, Bateson argued that the essential environmental crisis of the modern age lay in the realm of ideas. Humankind suffered from an "epistemological fallacy": we believed, wrongly, that mind and nature operated independently of each other. In fact, nature was a recursive, mindlike system; its unit of exchange wasn't energy, as most ecologists argued, but information. The way we thought about the world could change that world, and the world could in turn change us.

"When you narrow down your epistemology and act on the premise 'what interests me is me or my organization or my species,' you chop off consideration of other loops of the loop structure," Bateson wrote. "You decide that you want to get rid of the byproducts of human life and that Lake Erie will be a good place to put them. You forget that the ecomental system called Lake Erie is a part of your wider ecomental system — and that if Lake Erie is driven insane, its insanity is incorporated in the larger system of your thought and experience." Our inability to see this truth, Bateson maintained, was becoming monstrously apparent. Human consciousness evolved to privilege "purposiveness" — to get us what we want, whether what we want is a steak dinner or sex. Expand that tendency on a mass scale, and it is inevitable that you're going to see some disturbing effects: red tides, vanishing forests, smog, global warming. "There is an ecology of bad ideas, just as there is an ecology of weeds," Bateson wrote, "and it is characteristic of the system that basic error propagates itself."
