The Killing of Keçé

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

ataù keçé mahä-daityo

haya-rüpi madotkaöaù

etya våndävanaà ramyaà

jagarja ghanavad balé

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; ataù—then;

keçé—Kesi; mahä-daityaù—the great demon; haya-rüpi—in

the form of a horse; madotkaöaù—wild; etya—going; våndävanam—to Våndävana; ramyam—beautiful;

jagarja—neighed; ghanavat—like a cloud; balé—powerful.

Çré Närada said: Then the powerful and ferocious demon Keçé

assumed the form of a wild horse. Neighing like thunder, he

entered beautiful Våndävana.

Text 2

yasya päda-pratäòena

nipetuù çäkhino dåòhäù

pucchä-ghätena gagane

khaëòaà khaëòaà yayur ghanäù

yasya—of whom; päda-pratäòena—by the steps;

nipetuù—fell; çäkhinaù—the trees; dåòhäù—solid;

pucchä—of the tial; ghätena—by the swishing; gagane—in

the sky; khaëòam khaëòam—broken apart;

yayuù—went; ghanäù—the clouds.

His footsteps made the great trees fall. The swishing of his

tail broke apart the clouds in the sky.

Text 3

taà vékñya duùsaha-javaà

gopa-gopé-gaëä bhåçäm

bhayäturä maithilendra

çré-kåñëaà saraëaà yayuù

tam—him; vékñya—seeing; duùsaha-javam—running

with unstoppable speed; gopa-gopé-gaëä—the gopas and

gopés; bhåçäm—greatly; bhayäturä—afraid;

maithilendra—O king of Mithilä; çré-kåñëam—to Çré Kåñëa; saraëam—for shelter; yayuù—went.

When they saw him fiercely charge at them, the terrified

gopas and gopés ran to Çré Kåñëa for shelter.

Text 4

mä bhaiñöety abhayaà dattvä

bhagavän våjinärdanaù

kaöau pétämbaraà baddhvä

hantuà daityaà pracakrame

mä—don't; bhaiñöa—be afraid; iti—thus;

abhayam—fearlessness; dattvä—giving; bhagavän—the

Lord; våjinärdanaù—the deliverer from miseries;

kaöau—at His waist; pétämbaram—the yellow garment;

baddhvä—tying; hantum—to kill; daityam—the demon; pracakrame—went.

Saying, "Don't be afraid", the Lord removed their

fears. Then, tightening the yellow sash at His waist, the Supreme

Lord, the deliverer from troubles, went to kill the demon.

Text 5

harià paçcima-pädäbhyäà

santatäòa mahäsuraù

cälayan påthivéà räjan

nädayan vyoma-maëòalam

harim—Kåñëa; paçcima-pädäbhyäm—with his hind legs; santatäòa—hit; mahäsuraù—the great demon;

cälayan—shaking; påthivém—the ground; räjan—O

king; nädayan—neighing; vyoma-maëòalam—the circle of

the sky.

O king, then, shaking the ground, and making the sky echo

with his neighing, with his hind legs the great demon kicked Lord

Kåñëa.

Text 6

gåhétvä pädayor daityaà

bhrämayitvä bhujena khe

cikñepa yojanaà kåñëo

vätaù padmam ivoddhåtam

gåhétvä—grabbing; pädayoù—of the legs;

daityam—the demon; bhrämayitvä—whrling around;

bhujena—with an arm; khe—into the sky;

cikñepa—threw; yojanam—eight miles; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; vätaù—wind; padmam—a lotus flower; iva—like;

uddhåtam—uprooted.

Grabbing the demon's legs and whirling him around and

around, with one arm Lord Kåñëa threw the demon eight miles into

the sky as a great wind uproots and throws a lotus flower.

Text 7

punar ägatavän so 'pi

krodha-pürita-vigrahaù

pucchena çré-harià devaà

santatäòa vrajäìgane

punaù—again; ägatavän—come; saù—he;

api—also; krodha-pürita-vigrahaù—filled with angfer;

pucchena—with his tail; çré-harim—Lord Kåñëa;

devam—the Lord; santatäòa—hit; vrajäìgane—in the

courtyard of Vraja.

Filled with anger, the demon returned to the courtyards of

Vraja and with his tail violently struck Lord Kåñëa.

Text 8

pucche gåhétvä taà kåñëo

bhrämayitvä bhujaujasä

yojanänäà çataà räjan

cikñepa gagane balät

pucche—the tail; gåhétvä—grabbing; tam—him; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; bhrämayitvä—whirling; bhujaujasä—with

the power ofHis arms; yojanänäm—eight miles; çatam—a

hundred; räjan—O king; cikñepa—threw;

gagane—into the sky; balät—forcibly.

Grabbing that tail, and whirling the demon around and

around, with the strength of His arms Lord Kåñëa threw him eighty

miles into the sky.

Text 9

äkäçät patitaù so 'pi

kiïcid vyäkula-mänasaù

samutthäya punar daityo

jagarja ghanavad balé

äkäçät—from the sky; patitaù—fallen; so

'pi—he; kiïcit—somewhat; vyäkula-

mänasaù—agitated at heart; samutthäya—standing up;

punaù—again; daityaù—the demon; jagarja—neighed; ghanavat—like a cloud; balé—powerful;

When he fell from the sky, the powerful demon was somewhat

disturbed at heart. Standing up again, he neighed like thunder.

Text 10

saöä vidhunvan romäëi

bälaà khe cälayan muhuù

mahéà vidärayan pädair

utpapäta hareù puraù

saöä—mane; vidhunvan—shaking; romäëi—the

hairs; bälam—tail; khe—in the sky;

cälayan—moving; muhuù—again and again; mahém—the

earth; vidärayan—breaking; pädaiù—with hooves;

utpapäta—jumped; hareù—Lord Kåñëa; puraù—in front of.

Shaking his mane, swishing his tail in the sky, and breaking

the ground with his hooves, the demon-horse jumped before Lord

Kåñëa.

Text 11

tatäòa muñöinä taà vai

bhagavän madhusüdanaù

tasya muñöi-prahäreëa

mürcchito ghaöikä-dvayam

tatäòa—hit; muñöinä—with a fist; tam—him;

vai—indeed; bhagavän—the Lord; madhusüdanaù—Kåñëa; tasya—of Him; muñöi-prahäreëa—by the puch;

mürcchitaù—unconscious; ghaöikä-dvayam—for an hour.

Then Lord Kåñëa punched him, and the demon was unconscious

for an hour.

Text 12

mastakena galoddeçe

samudhåtya harià hayaù

bhü-maëòaläd utpapäta

gagane lakña-yojanam

mastakena—by the head; galoddeçe—on the neck;

samudhåtya—grabbing; harim—Lord Kåñëa; hayaù—the

horse; bhü-maëòalät—from the earth;

utpapäta—threw; gagane—into the sky; lakña-

yojanam—800,000 miles.

Then, grabbing His neck, the demon-horse pulled Lord Kåñëa

eight hundred thousand miles into the sky.

Text 13

tayor yuddham abhüd ghoraà

gagane prahara-dvayam

pädair dadbhiù saöäbhiç ca

puccha-tékñna-khurair nåpa

tayoù—of them; yuddham— battle; abhüt—was;

ghoram—horrible; gagane—in the sky; prahara-dvayam—for

six hours; pädaiù—with feet; dadbhiù—with teeth; saöäbhiç—with mane; ca—and; puccha—tail;

tékñna-sharp; khuraiù—razor; nåpa—O king.

For six hours they fought fiercely. With his hooves, teeth,

mane, and the sharp razor of his tail, the demon-horse attacked

the Lord.

Text 14

gåhétvä taà harir dorbhyäà

bhrämayitvä tv itas tataù

äkäçät pätayäm äsa

kamaëòalum ivärbhakaù

gåhétvä—grabbing; tam—him; hariù—Lord Kåñëa; dorbhyäm—with both arms; bhrämayitvä—whirling around; tv—indeed; itas tataù—herew and there; äkäçät—from

the sky; pätayäm äsa—threw; kamaëòalum—a

kamandalu; iva—like; arbhakaù—a child.

Suddenly grabbing him, and whirling him around and around,

with both arms Lord Kåñëa threw the demon to the earth as a child

throws a kamaëòalu.

Text 15

bhujaà praveñayäm äsa

tan-mukhe bhagavän hariù

tasyodare gato bähur

vavådhe rogavad bhåçäm

bhujam—His arm; praveñayäm äsa—inserting; tan-

mukhe—in the demon's mouth; bhagavän—Lord;

hariù—Kåñëa; tasyodare—in his belly; gataù—wnet; bähuù—the arm; vavådhe—expanded; rogavat—like a

disease; bhåçäm—greatly.

Then Lord Kåñëa thrust His arm in the demon's mouth. Pushed

into the demon's belly, the arm expanded like an incurable

disease.

Text 16

tadä tu leëòaà kåtavän

ruddha-väyur mahäsuraù

khaëòé-bhütodaraù sadyo

mamära haya-rüpa-dhåk

tadä—then; tu—indeed; leëòam—stool;

kåtavän—passing; ruddha-väyuù—his life-breath stopped; mahäsuraù—the great demon; khaëòé-bhütodaraù—his stomach

broken; sadyaù—at once; mamära—died; haya-

rüpa-dhåk—having the form of a horse.

Then, passing stool and urine, his life breath stopped, and

his stomach broken by Lord Kåñëa's arm, the horse-demon suddenly

died.

Text 17

dehäd vinirgataù sadyo

mukuöé kuëòalänvitaù

divya-rüpa-dharaà kåñëaà

präïjaliù praëanäma ha

dehät—from the body; vinirgataù—come;

sadyaù—suddenly; mukuöé—crowned;

kuëòalänvitaù—decorated with earrings; divya-rüpa—a splendid

form; dharam—manifesting; kåñëam—to Lord Kåñëa; präïjaliù—with folded hands; praëanäma—bowed

down; ha—certainly.

From the demon's body suddenly emerged a being wearing a

crown and earrings. With folded hands he bowed down before

glorious Lord Kåñëa.

Text 18

çré-kumuda uväca

çakrasyänucaro 'haà vai

kumudo näma mädhava

tejasvé rüpavän véro

jiñëuç chatra-bhramià dadhan

çré-kumuda uväca—Çré Kumuda said; çakrasya—of

Indra; anucaraù—a follower; aham—I am;

vai—indeed; kumudaù—Kumuda; näma—named;

mädhava—O Kåñëa; tejasvé—powerful and splendid;

rüpavän—handsome; véraù—heroic; jiñëuù—glorious; chatra-bhramim—the parasol; dadhan—holding.

Çré Kumuda said: O Lord Kåñëa, my name is Kumuda and I am a

servant of King Indra. I am powerful, handsome, heroic, and

glorious. I carry Indra's parasol.

Text 19

våträsura-vadhe pürvaà

brahma-hatyä-praçäntaye

yajïaà cakära näkeço

väjimedhaà kratüttamam

våträsura—of Våträsura; vadhe—in the killing;

pürvam—previously; brahma-hatyä-praçäntaye—to become free of

the sin of killing a brähmaëa; yajïam—a yajna; cakära—did; näkeçaù—Indra;

väjimedham—vajimedha; kratüttamam—the best of yajnas.

When Våträsura was killed, to become free of the sin of

killing a brähmaëa, Indra performed an añvamedha-yajïa,

the best of sacrifices.

Text 20

açvamedha-hayaà çubhraà

çyäma-karëaà mano-javam

tam ärurukñur duñöo 'haà

corayitvä talaà gataù

açvamedha-hayam—the açvamedha horse;

çubhram—handsome; çyäma-karëam—with black ears; mano-

javam—running as fast as the mind; tam—that;

ärurukñuù—wishing to ride; duñöaù—wicked; aham—I; corayitvä—stealing; talam—to Talaloka; gataù—went.

Yearning to ride it, I stole the splendid sacrificial horse,

which had one black ear and ran as fast as the mind, and went to

Talaloka.

Text 21

tato marud-gaëair nétaà

päça-baddhaà mahä-khalam

saçäpa mäà balärätis

tvaà rakño bhava durmate

tataù—from there; marud-gaëaiù—by the Maruts;

nétam—brought; päça-baddham—bound with ropes; mahä-

khalam—a great iffender; saçäpa—cursed; mäm—me;

balärätiù—Indra, the enemy of Bala; tvam—you; rakñaù—a

raksasa; bhava—become; durmate—O wicked one.

The Maruts bound me with ropes and brought me back. Indra

cursed me, "Wretch! Become a demon!

Text 22

hayäkåtis te sambhüyäd

bhümau manvantara-dvayam

tac-chäpäd adya mukto 'haà

sadyas tvat-sparçanät prabho

hayäkåtiù—the form of a horse; te—of you;

sambhüyät—will be; bhümau—on the earthj; manvantara-

dvayam—for two manvantaras; tac-chäpät—from that curse; adya—today; muktaù—freed; aham—I am;

sadyaù—at once; tvat-sparçanät—by Your touch;

prabhaù—O Lord.

"For two manvantaras you will have a horse's form on

the earth." O Lord, today Your touch has freed me from that

curse.

Text 23

kiìkaraà kuru mäà deva

tvad-aìghrau lagna-mänasam

namas tubhyaà bhagavate

sarva-lokaika-säkñiëe

kiìkaram—a servant; kuru—please make; mäm—me; deva—O Lord; tvad-aìghrau—at Your feet; lagna-

mänasam—the mind is placed; namaù—obeisances;

tubhyam—to You; bhagavate—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; sarva-lokaika-säkñiëe—the sole witness of all.

O Lord please make me Your servant. My heart is fixed on

Your feet. I offer my respectful obeisances to You, the Supreme

Personality of Godhead, the Supersoul who is the witness of all.

Text 24

çré-närada uväca

pradakñiëé-kåtya harià pareçvaraà

vimänam äruhya mahojjvalaà param

vaikuëöhalokaà kumudo yayau tvaraà

viräjayan maithila maëòalaà diçäm

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; pradakñiëé-

kåtya—circumambulating; harim—Lord Kåñëa;

pareçvaram—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; vimänam—an

airplane; äruhya—climbing; mahojjvalam—very

glorious; param—transcendental;

vaikuëöhalokam—Vaikuëöhaloka; kumudaù—Kumuda;

yayau—went; tvaram—at once; viräjayan—filling with

light; maithila—O king of Mithilä; maëòalam—the

circle; diçäm—of the directions.

Çré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, after circumambulating

Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kumuda entered a

celestial airplane and at once flew to Vaikuëöhaloka, filling the

circle of the directions with light as he went.
