The Killing of the Kola Demon

Çré Bahuläçva said: After Kåñëa met the gopas and gopés,

what did Kåñëa and Balaräma do in Mathurä City?

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà

catur-varga-phala-pradam

caritram—pastime; paramam—transcendental;

miñöam—sweet; çré-kåñëa-baladevayoù—of Çré Kåñëa and

Balaräma; sarva-päpa—all sins; haram—removing;

puëyam—sacred; catur-varga-phala-pradam—giving the four

goals of life.

Kåñëa and Balaräma's sacred, sweet, and transcendental

pastimes remove all sins and grant the four goals of life.

anyac caritraà çåëutäc

chré-kåñëa-baladevayoù

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà

catur-varga-phala-pradam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said:; anyac—another; caritram—pastrime; çåëutät—hear; çré-kåñëa-

baladevayoù—of Çré Kåñëa and Balaräma; sarva-päpa-haram—removing all sins; puëyam—sacred; catur-varga-

phala-pradam—granting thje four goals of life.

Çré Närada said: Please hear another of Kåñëa and Balaräma's

sacred transcendental pastimes, which remove all sins and grant

the four goals of life.

kolena péòitä lokäù

kauçäravi-purän nåpa

mathuräm äyayuù sarve

sa-dvijä déna-mänasäù

kolena—By Kola; péòitä—tormented; lokäù—the

people; kauçäravi-purät—from Kausaravi-pura; nåpa—O

king; mathuräm—to Mathurä; äyayuù—came;

sarve—all; sa-dvijä—with brähmaëas; déna-

mänasäù—troubled at heart.

Harassed by a demon named Kola, all the people of Kauçäravi-

pura fled to Mathurä City.

açvam äçu samäruhya

rohiëé-nandano balaù

sv-alpaiù puraù-saraiù särdhaà

mågayärthé vinirgataù

açvam—a horse; äçu—at once;

samäruhya—mounting; rohiëé-nandanaù—Balaräma;

balaù—Balaräma; sv-alpaiù—a few; puraù-

saraiùfollowers; särdham—with; mågayärthé—to

hunt; vinirgataù—left.

At that moment Lord Balaräma, riding on horseback and

ccompanied by a few attendants, was about to leave on a hunting

expedition.

Text 6

taà natväbhyarcya vidhivat

tad-aìghryoù patitäù pathi

kåtäïjali-puöä ücur

harña-gadgadayä girä

tam—to Him; natvä—bowing down;

abhyarcya—worshiping; vidhivat—properly; tad-

aìghryoù—at His feet; patitäù—fallen; pathi—on the

road; kåtäïjali-puöä—with folded hands;

ücuù—said; harña-gadgadayä—choked with happiness;

girä—with words.

Bowing down, worshiping Him, and falling at His feet, with folded hands and voices faltering with happines, the people spoke

to Lord Balaräma.

çré-prajä ücuù

räma räma mahä-bäho

deva-deva mahä-bala

kolena péòitäù sarve

ägatäù çaraëaà vayam

çré-prajä ücuù—the people said; räma—O Balaräma;

räma—OBalaräma; mahä-bähaù—O mighty-armed; deva-deva—O

Lord of lords; mahä-bala—O powerful one; kolena—by

Kola; péòitäù—distressed; sarve—all;

ägatäù—come; çaraëam—to the shelter; vayam—we.

The people said: Balaräma! Balaräma! Mighty-armed one!

Master of the demigods! Powerful one! We are all harassed by a

demon named Kola. We take shalter of You.

Text 8

daityaù kaàsa-sakhaù kolo

jitvä kauçäravià nåpam

kauçäraveù pure räjyaà

karoti sa mahä-balaù

daityaù—demon; kaàsa-sakhaù—a friend of Kaàsa;

kolaù—Kola; jitvä—defeating; kauçäravim—kausaravi; nåpam—King; kauçäraveù—pf Kausaravi; pure—in the

city; räjyam—kingdom; karoti—does; sa—he; mahä-balaù—powerful.

Kola, a powerful demon-friend of Kaàsa, defeated the king of

Kauçäravi. Now he rules Kauçäravi City.

Text 9

kauçäravis tad-bhayäd dhi

gaìgä-tére gato nåpaù

räjyärthaà tvat-padämbhojaà

bhajate su-jitendriyaù

kauçäraviù—Kausaravi; tad-bhayät—out of fear of

him; hi—indeed; gaìgä-tére—to the Gaìgä's shore; gataù—went; nåpaù—king; räjyärtham—for his

kingdom; tvat-padämbhojam—Your lotus feet;

bhajate—worships; su-jitendriyaù—controlling his senses.

Out of fear of him, the king of Kauçäravi fled to the

Gaìgä's shore where, controlling his senses, he worships Your

lotus feet to regain his kingdom.

Text 10

tat-sahäyaà kuru vibho

vayaà yasya prajäù çubhäù

putravat pälitäs tena

mahä-saukhya-samanvitäù

tat-sahäyam—help; kuru—please givve; vibhaù—O

powerful one; vayam—we; yasya—of him;

prajäù—the subjects; çubhäù—good; putravat—like

sons; pälitäù—protected; tena—by him; mahä-

saukhya-samanvitäù—very happy.

O almighty one, please help him. We are his good subjects.

He always protected us as if we were his own children. We were

always happy under his rule.

Text 11

kolenädyaiva duñöena

péòitäù satataà prabho

tralokya-vijayé véraù

kaàso 'pi nihatas tvayä

kolena—by Kola; adya—now; eva—indeed;

duñöena—the demon; péòitäù—harassed;

satatam—always; prabhaù—O Lord; tralokya—the three

worlds; vijayé—conquering; véraù—warrior;

kaàsaù—Kaàsa; api—even; nihataù—killed; tvayä—by

You.

Now we are continually harassed by by the demon Kola. O

Lord, You killed even the ferocious Kaàsa, who had conquered the

three worlds.

kole jévati devendra

kaàso 'pi na måtaù småtaù

rakñärthaà sa-guëo 'si tvaà

bhaktänäà prakåteù paraù

kole—as Kola; jévati—lives; devendra—O master of

the demigods; kaàsaù—Kaàsa; api—also;

na—not; måtaù—dead; småtaù—considered;

rakñärtham—for protection; sa-guëaù—appearing as an ordinary

person subject to the modes of nature; asi—are;

tvam—You; bhaktänäm—of the devotees;

prakåteù—matter; paraù—beyond.

O master of the demigods, we think that Kaàsa is not dead

as long as Kola remains alive. O master of the demigods, although

You are transcendental, beyond the world of matter, in order to

protect Your devotees You have come here, pretending to be a

conditioned soul bound by the modes of nature.

çré-rämo bhakta-vatsalaù

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; iti—thus;

çrutvä—hearing; vacaù—words; teñäm—of them;

çré-rämaù—Çré Balaräma; bhakta—devotees;

vatsalaù—loves; gaìgä-yamunayoù—of the Gaìgä and Yamunä; madhye—between; kauçämbém—Kausambi;

nagarém—City; yayau—went.

Çré Närada said: After hearing these words, Lord Balaräma,

who loves His devotees, went to Kauçäravi City in the land

between the Gaìgä and the Yamunä.

yoddhuà samägataà rämaà

çrutvä kolo 'pi nirgataù

akñauhiëébhir daçäbhir

maëòitaç caëòa-vikramaù

yoddhum—to fight; samägatam—come;

rämam—Balaräma; çrutvä—hearing; kolaù—Kola;

api—also; nirgataù—went; akñauhiëébhiù—with

aksauhinis; daçäbhiù—ten; maëòitaù—decorated;

caëòa-vikramaù—ferocious.

Hearing that Lord Balaräma had come to fight, ferocious

Kola, decorated with ten akñauhiëé divisions, went to meet Him.

caïcala—restless; açva—horses;

taraìga—waves; äòhyam—opulent; ratha—chariots;

ibha—elephants; açva—horses; timiìgilam—timingila

fish; nadém—river; iva—like;

ägatäm—arrived; senäm—army; pralaya—of

devastation; arëava—the ocean; nädiném—roaring; véra—of warriors; ävartäàwhirlpools; ca—and; täm—that; vékñya—seeing; baddhvä—binding;

setum—a bridge; halam—strong; balaù—Balaräma;

äkåñya—pulling; tam—that; tad-agreëa—by the tip; musalena—by His club; ahanat—struck; dåòham—hard.

Lord Balaräma gazed at Kola's army, which was like a great

river filled with waves of restless horses, timiìgila fish of

chariots, elephants, and horses, whirlpools of ferocious

soldiers, and tumultuous roaring like a great ocean of

destruction. Then the Lord, in order to make a bridge to cross

this river of soldiers, began striking it with His club.

yugapat tat-prahäreëa

vérä açvä rathä gajäù

sarvataù koöiçaù petuù

peñitäù phalavad raëe

yugapat—at that moment; tat-prahäreëa—by His blows; vérä—the warriors; açvä—horses; rathä—chariots; gajäù—elephants; sarvataù—all; koöiçaù—by the

millions; petuù—fell; peñitäù—crushed;

phalavat—like fruit; raëe—in the battle.

By the force of Lord Balaräma's blows millions of warriors,

horses, chariots, and elephants fell, crushed as if they were

pieces of fruit thrown on the battlefield.

Text 18

çeñäù pradudruvur vérä

bhayärtä raëa-maëòalät

ekäké yuyudhe daityaù

kolo rämeëa çastra-bhåt

çeñäù—remaining; pradudruvuù—fled;

vérä—warriors; bhayärtä—terrified; raëa-maëòalät—from

the battlefield; ekäké—alone; yuyudhe—fought;

daityaù—the demon; kolaù—Kola; rämeëa—with

Balaräma; çastra-bhåt—armed with weapons.

Terrified, the surviving warriors fled from the battlefield.

Then Kola, armed with many weapons, fought a duel with Lord

Balaräma.

elephant holding up the directions; iva—like; nadat-

käla-ghana-prabham—roaring like thunder; çitam—sharp;

aìkuçam—goad; ädäya—taking; kola—Kola;

äruhya—mounting; karëataù—by the ear; sva-gajam—his

own elephant; nodayäm äsa—made it charge;

baladeväya—to Lord Balaräma; daitya-räö—the king of demons.

Mounting by its ear his four-tusked elephant bound with

golden chains, its face decorated with pictures and designs drawn

in gomütra, sindüra, and musk, its ichor flowing, its bells

tinkling ominously, and its body enormous as one of the elephants

holding up the directions, and making his elephant trumpet like

thunder, the demon-king Kola took a sharp goad in his hand and

made his elephant charge Lord Balaräma.

Text 22

ägataà vékñya taà nägaà

mattaà kolena noditam

tatäòa musalenäsau

vajreëendro yathä girim

ägatam—coming; vékñya—seeing; tam—that;

nägam—elephant; mattam—maddened; kolena—bo Kola; noditam—sent; tatäòa—struck; musalena—with His

club; asau—He; vajreëa—with the thunderbolt;

indraù—Indra; yathä—as; girim—a mountain.

Seeing the maddened elephant, pressed on by Kola, charging

Him, Lord Balaräma struck it with His club as Indra strikes a

mountain with his thunderbolt.

musalasya prahäreëa

viçérëo 'bhün mahä-gajaù

måd-ghäto naikadhaiväçu

daëòa-ghätena maithila

musalasya—of the club; prahäreëa—by the blow; viçérëaù—shattered; abhüt—became; mahä-gajaù—the great

elephant; måd-ghätaù—a clay pot; na—not;

ekadhä—one; eva—indeed; äçu—at once; daëòa-

ghätena—by the blow of a stick; maithila—O king of Mithilä.

O king of Mithilä, the elephant was shattered by the blow

from Lord Balaräma's club as a small clay pot is shattered by a

stick.

kolaù kroòa-mukho daityo

raktäkñaù patito gajät

çülaà cikñepa niçitaà

mädhaväya mahätmane

kolaù—Kola; kroòa-mukhaù—a great mouth;

daityaù—the demon; raktäkñaù—red eyes;

patitaù—fallen; gajät—from the elephant;

çülam—spear; cikñepa—threw; niçitam—sharp;

mädhaväya—at Balaräma; mahätmane—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead.

Kola, his eyes red and his mouth wide-open, jumped from the

elephant and threw a spear at Lord Balaräma, the Supreme

Personality of Godhead.

Text 25

musalena tadä rämas

tac-chülaà çatadhäcchinat

käca-pätraà yathä balo

daëòena ca videha-räö

musalena—with His club; tadä—then;

rämaù—Balaräma; tac-chülam—the spear; çatadhä—in a

hundred pieces; acchinat—shattered; käca-pätram—a

crystal goblet; yathä—as; balaù—Balaräma;

daëòena—with a stick; ca—and; videha-räö—O king of

Videha.

O king of Videha, with His club Lord Balaräma shattered that

spear into a hundred pieces as one shatters a crystal goblet with

an iron rod.

sahasra-bhära-samyuktäà

gadäà gurvéà pragåhya ca

balaà tatäòa hådaye

jagarja ghanavat khalaù

sahasra-bhära-samyuktäm—weighing a thousand bharas;

gadäm—club; gurvém—heavy; pragåhya—taking;

ca—and; balam—Lord Balaräma; tatäòa—struck; hådaye—on the chest; jagarja—roared; ghanavat—like a

cloud; khalaù—the demon.

Taking a club heavy as a thousand bhäras, the demon struck

Lord Balaräma on the chest and roared like thunder.

Text 27

tad-gadäyäù prahäreëa

na cacäla yadüdvahaù

paçyatäà sarva-lokänäà

srajä hata iva dvipaù

tad-gadäyäù—of the club; prahäreëa—by the blow;

na—not; cacäla—wavered; yadüdvahaù—Balaräma;

paçyatäm—looking; sarva-lokänäm—all the people;

srajä—by a garland; hata—hit; iva—like;

dvipaù—an elephant.

As everyone could see the blow of the club had no effect on

Lord Balaräma. He stood like an elephant struck by a flower

garland.

Text 28

tam äkåñya halägreëa

kolaà kajjalavat-tanum

musalenähanan mürdhni

baladevo mahä-balaù

tam—him; äkåñya—dragging; halägreëa—by the tip of

His plow; kolam—Kol; kajjalavat-tanum—his body like

black kajjala; musalena—by the club; ahanat—hit; mürdhni—on the head; baladevaù—Balaräma; mahä-

balaù—very powerful.

Catching Kola, who was black as mascara, and dragging him

about with His plow, powerful Lord Balaräma finally hit him on

the head with His club.

musalähata-mürdhäpi

patito raëa-maëòale

muñöi-ghätaà ghätayitvä

tatraiväntaradhéyata

musala—by the club; ähata—hit; mürdhä—on the

head; api—also; patitaù—fallen; raëa-maëòale—in

the battlefield; muñöi-ghätam—a punch;

ghätayitvä—throwing; tatra—there; eva—indeed;

antaradhéyata—disappeared.

His head struck by the Lord's club, Kola fell on the

battleground. Then he clapped his hands and suddenly disappeared.

Text 30

cakära mäyäà mäyävé

daiteyém ati-bhéñaëäm

pralaya-prabhavair meghair

mahä-väta-praëoditaiù

andhakäraà prakurvadbhir

abhüd äcchäditaà nabhaù

cakära—did; mäyäm—magic; mäyävé—a magician; daiteyém—demonic; ati-bhéñaëäm—very fearful;

pralaya-prabhavaiù—with the power of destruction;

meghaiù—with clouds; mahä-väta-praëoditaiù—send by great

winds; andhakäram—blinding darkness;

prakurvadbhiù—making; abhüt—did;

äcchäditam—covered; nabhaù—the sky.

Kola, a great magician, made very terrifying and demonic

illusions. Bringing devastating clouds pushed by hurricane winds,

he covered the sky with a blinding darkness.

japä-puñpa-samän bindün

ajasraà rudhirasya ca

mocayitvätha bébhatsa-

varñäç cakrur ghanäghanäù

japä-puñpa-samän—like roses; bindün—drops;

ajasram—at once; rudhirasya—of blood; ca—and;

mocayitvä—releasing; atha—then;

bébhatsa—terrifying; varñäù—rains; cakruù—did;

ghanäghanäù—great clouds.

The great clouds made a terrifying monsoon rain of blood

drops big as roses.

Text 32

püya-medo-'ti-vië-mütra-

surä-mäàsa-samanvitäù

dåñövä täbhiç ca varñäbhir

hä-hä-käro babhüva ha

püya—pus; medaù—fat; ati-viö—great stool;

mütra—urine; surä—wine; mäàsa—flesh;

samanvitäù—with; dåñövä—seeing; täbhiù—with them; ca—and; varñäbhiù—rains; hä-hä-käraù—alas!

alas!; babhüva—was; ha—indeed.

Then it rained pus, fat, stool, urine, wine, and flesh.

There was a great cry of {Alas! Alas!"

Texts 33 and 34

jïätvätha tat-kåtäà mäyäà

baladevo mahä-prabhuù

cikñepa musalaà dérghaà

para-sainya-vidäraëam

sarvästra-ghätakaà svacchaà

añöa-dhätu-mayaà dåòham

çata-yojana-vistérëaà

pralayägni-sama-prabham

jïätvä—knowing; atha—then; tat-kåtäm—done

by him; mäyäm—magic; baladevaù—Balaräma; mahä-

prabhuù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

cikñepa—thre; musalam—His club; dérgham—great;

para-sainya-vidäraëam—breaking the enemy's army;

sarva—all; astra—weapons; ghätakam—blow;

svaccham—clear; añöa-dhätu-mayam—made of eight metals; dåòham—firm; çata-yojana-vistérëam—800 miles long;

pralayägni-sama-prabham—splendid as the fire of cosmic

devastation.

Aware that this was all a magical illusion, Lord Balaräma,

the Supreme Personality of Godhead, threw His great eight-

hundred-mile club, the best of weapons, which was made of eight

metals, splendid as the fires at the time of cosmic devastation,

and able to cut to pieces any enemy's army.

balästraà musalaà reje

bhramad daça-dig-antare

vidärayad ghanän vyomni

néhäraà ca yathä raviù

bala—Lord Balaräma's; astram—weapon;

musalam—club; reje—shone; bhramat—wandering;

daça-dig-antare—the ten directions; vidärayat—cutting

apart; ghanän—the clouds; vyomni—in the sky;

néhäram—fog; ca—and; yathä—as; raviù—the sun.

Lord Balaräma's club circled the ten directions, cutting

away the clouds as the the sun cuts away the morning fog.

Text 36

tad-vyomni pragataà dåñövä

halästraà ca svataù prabhuù

samutpatyäkåñya balän

madhye tän vidadära ha

tad-vyomni—in the sky; pragatam—gone;

dåñövä—seeing; halästram—Lord Balaräma's plow;

ca—and; svataù—own; prabhuù—the Lord;

samutpatya—lifting; äkåñya—dragging; balän—by force; madhye—in the middle; tän—them;

vidadära—cut; ha—indeed.

Seeing that His club was still in the sky, the Lord took up

His plow weapon and continued to break apart the clouds.

näçaà gatäyäà mäyäyäà

baladevo mahä-balaù

gåhétvä bhuja-daëòäbhyäà

bhuja-daëòe madotkaöe

näçam—to destruction; gatäyäm—gone; mäyäyäm—the

magic; baladevaù—Lord Balaräma; mahä-balaù—very

powerful; gåhétvä—taking; bhuja-daëòäbhyäm—with both

arms; bhuja-daëòe—the arms; madotkaöe—ferocious.

When the magical illusion was completely dispelled, with

both hands powerful Lord Balaräma grabbed the ferocious demon's

arm.

Text 38

bhrämayan bäla iva taà

pratülaà sa itas tataù

pätayäm äsa bhü-påñöhe

kamaëòalum ivärbhakaù

bhrämayan—whirling about; bäla—a child;

iva—like; tam—him; pratülam—cotton; sa—he; itaù—here; tataù—and there; pätayäm äsa—threw; bhü-påñöhe—to the ground; kamaëòalum—a kamandalu;

iva—like; arbhakaù—a child.

Whirling him around and around as a child whirls a cotton

swab, Lord Balaräma threw the demon to the ground as a child

throws a kamaëòalu.

Text 39

tasya daityasya pätena

säbdhi-çaila-vanaiù saha

cakampe näòikä-mätraà

sarvaà bhü-khaëòa-maëòalam

tasya—of him; daityasya—the demon; pätena—by the

fall; säbdhi-çaila-vanaiù—with oceans, mountains, and

forests; saha—with; cakampe—trembled; näòikä-

mätram—tube; sarvam—all; bhü-khaëòa-maëòalam—the

circle of the earth.

When the demon fell the entire earth, with its oceans,

mountains, and forests, shook.

Text 40

bhagna-dantaç calan-netro

mürchito nidhanaà yayau

kolo näma mahä-daityo

våtro vajra-hato yathä

bhagna-dantaù—broken teeth; calan-netraù—moving

eyes; mürchitaù—fainted; nidhanam—death;

yayau—attained; kolaù—Kola; näma—named; mahä-

daityaù—the great demon; våtraù—Våtra; vajra—by the

thunderbolt; hataù—struck; yathä—as.

His teeth broken and his eyes moving, the great demon named

Kola fainted and died, as Våtra did when he was hit by Indra's

thunderbolt.

Text 41

tadä jaya-jayärävo

divi bhümau babhüva ha

deva-dundubhayo neduù

puñpa-varñäù suraiù kåtäù

tadä—then; jaya-jayärävaù—sounds of "Victory!

Victory!"; divi—in the sky; bhümau—on the earth; babhüva—was; ha—indeed; deva-dundubhayaù—the

dundubhis of the demigods; neduù—sounded; puñpa-

varñäù—showers of flowers; suraiù—by the demigods;

kåtäù—done.

At that moment there was a great tumult of "Victory!

Victory!" in both the heaven and earth, the celestial dundubhi

drums sounded, and the demigods showered flowers.

itthaà kolaà ghätayitvä

baladevo 'cyutägrajaù

dattvätha kauçäravaye

kauçämbéà ca puréà tataù

ittham—thus; kolam—Kola; ghätayitvä—killing; baladevaù—Lord Balaräma; acyutägrajaù—the elder brother

of the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead;

dattvä—giving; atha—then; kauçäravaye—to King

Then, to remove all sins and to protect all the worlds, Lord

"Now become a horrible demon with the face of a

gaìgä—Ganges; brähmaëa-mukhyasya—of the best of

brähmaëas; jähnavé—Jähnavé; yena—by

whom; kathyate—is called;

Jahnu is the great Brähmaëa after whom the Ganges is called

Jähnavé. There Lord Balaräma gave chairty ot the brähmaëas and

then stayed the night with His associates.

ähära-sthänakaà präpya rätrau väsaà cakära ha

Going west, He reached Ähära-sthäna, which is very dear to

the Päëòavas, where He stayed the night.

tatra—there; dänam—charity;

There He gave delicious foods in charity to the brähmaëas.

Then He went eight miles away to the devotee named Mäëòükadeva.

baladevo jagäma ha

tapas taptam—performed austerities;; mahat—great; tena—by Him; ca—and; ante—in the end; deva—of the Diety; kåpä—mercy; äptaye—to attain;

tad-artham—for that purpose; sva-samäjena—with His

jagäma—went; ha—indeed.

Mäëòükadeva had performed great austerities to attain the

mercy of the Lord. That is the reason Lord Balaräma went there

with His associates.

ürdhväsyam—his head raised; eka-päda-stham—standing on

one foot; dhyäna-stimita-locanam—his eyes closed in

meditation; sva-bhaktam—His devotee; hådaya-

lolupam—eager to see the form; tam—him;

jahära—embracing; tadä—then; anantaù—the limitless

Standing on one foot, his head up, and his eyes closed,

Mäëòükadeva meditated on the Lord, whom he could see in his

heart. Still, Mäëòükadeva yearned to see the Lord's form with his

eyes open. When Lord Balaräma, now in His form of Lord Ananta,

embraced him, Mäëòükadeva opened his eyes and saw before him the

sublimely handsome form of Lord Ananta.

sragvy-eka-kuëòalaà gauraà

täläìka-ratha-samyutam

stutvä paramayä bhaktyä

papäta caraëau punaù

sragvé—wearing a garland; eka-kuëòalam—one earring; gauram—fair; täläìka-ratha-samyutam—His chariot marked

with the insignia of a palm tree; stutvä—offering

Lord Ananta had a fair complexion. He wore a flower garland

and a single earring, and His chariot bore the insignia of a palm

tree. Offering prayers with great devotion, Mäëòükadeva fell

again and again at His feet.

come from the mouth of Çukadeva Gosvämé, and which removes the

evils of the age of Kali."

To please Nanda, the gopés, and the other people of Vraja,

Lord Kåñëa sent to them His personal associate Uddhava, who is

very virtuous and exalted, and who has a transcendental form like

that of the Lord Himself. Lord Kåñëa did not directly appear to

them at first. First he sent Uddhava. Then, when they understood

the true nature of Kåñëa, the people of Vraja worshiped Him with

great reverence.

vasantartuç ca gréñmo 'pi

sa cakära vrajätmakau

çamayäm äsa rädhäyaù

çokaà tat-kuëòa-pärçvajaù

vasantartuù—spring; ca—and; gréñme—in summer; api—even; sa—not; cakära—did; vrajätmakau—the

two Lords of Vraja; çamayäm äsa—pacified; rädhäyaù—of

Rädhä; çokam—the grief; tat-kuëòa-pärçvajaù—by the

side of Her lake.

Staying at Rädhä-kuëòa during the spring and summer seasons,

Uddhava pacified Çré Rädhä's grief.

sarvaà bhü-maëòalaà tatra

vicacära vrajänugaiù

viyogärti-haraù prokto

gaväà nandädi-gopinäm

sarvam—all; bhü-maëòalam—the earth;

tatra—there; vicacära—considered; vrajänugaiù—with the

followers of Vraja; viyogärti—the sufferings of

separation; haraù—removing; proktaù—said;

gaväm—of the cows; nandädi-gopinäm—the gopas headed by

Nanda.

Uddhava wandered the earth with devotees that were followers

of the people of Vraja. He removed the sufferings Nanda, the

gopas, and the cows felt in Lord Kåñëa's absence.

manträdhikära-kuçalaù

sarvaù parikarägraëéù

athäntardhäna-veläyäà

bhagavän dharma-gup-tanuù

manträdhikära-kuçaläù—an excpert counselor;

sarvaù—all; parikarägraëéù—the best of the Lord's

assocuates; atha—then; antardhäna-veläyäm—when He had

disdappeared; bhagavän—the Lord; dharma-gup-tanuù—the

protector of religion.

He is the best of counselors and the first of the Lord's

personal associates. When Lord Kåñëa is absent, he becomes the

protector of the true religion.

tasmai sva-tejasam api

däsyate paramädbhutam

mudrädhikäraà sarvatra

sarvadaiva viräjate

tasmai—to him; sva-tejasam—His own power;

api—also; däsyate—will give; paramädbhutam—very

wonderful; mudrädhikäram—able to teach;

sarvatra—everywhere; sarvadä—always; eva—indeed; viräjate—shines.

The Supreme Lord will give His own very wonderful

transcendental potency to him. In this way he will be glorious in

all times and all places.

antardhäne tu sva-sthäne

dattä tasyädhikäritä

badaré-sthaà sa-parikaram

dharmajaà bodhayiñyati

antardhäne—disappeared; tu—indeed; sva-sthäne—to

His own abode; dattä—given; tasya—of him;

When in the future the Lord leaves this world and returns to

His own transcendental abode, Uddhava, empowered by Him, will go

to Badarikäçrama. There he will teach Näräyaëa Åñi and His

followers.

vajranäbho yädavänäà

mäthure sambhaviñyati

arjunädi—headed by Arjuna; viyogärti—the sufferings of

separation; häré—removing; sa—that;

Uddhava will remove the sufferings Arjuna and the other

devotees feel in Lord Kåñëa's absence. After him, a devotee named

Vajranäbha will take birth in the Yädava dynasty in Mathurä.

viyogärti-haraç caiva

çré-kåñëasya—of Lord Kåñëa; eva—indeed;

In the Kaurava dynasty King Parékñit will be famous. His

very powerful son Janamejaya will also be famous.

pituùof his father; çatru-hanam—killing the

enemies; yajïam—a yajna; kariñyati—will

He will perform a yajïa to kill his father's

enemies. Uddhava will bring the ingredients for that yajïa.

Then he wil hear the splendid Çrémad-Bhägavatam Puräëa,

which predicts that the Supreme Personality of Godhead will

appear here in a fair-complexioned form. Of this there is no

doubt.

çrémat-prasädäd viprarñer

mahä-bhägavatottamät

tad-dvärä sarva-yajïasya

nivåttiù sambhaviñyati

çrémat-prasädät—by the mercy; viprarñeù—of the brähmaëa

sage; mahä-bhägavatottamät—the best of devotees;

tad-dvärä—by that; sarva-yajïasya—of the yajna; nivåttiù—the cessation; sambhaviñyati—will be.

By the mercy of a great brähmaëa-sage that yajïa

will be stopped.

Text 85

yajïa-saàskära-kartåëäà

brähmaëänäà ca püjanam

sa däsyati mahä-räja

grämäëäà çatakaà tadä

yajïa-saàskära-kartåëäm—of the performers of the

yajna; brähmaëänäm—the brähmaëas; ca—and;

püjanam—worship; saù—he; däsyati—willgive;

mahä-räja—O great king; grämäëäm—of villages; çatakam—

a hundred; tadä—then.

O great king, then he will worship the brähmaëas that

performed the yajïa and he will give them a hundred

villages in charity.

Text 86

tatas tv äcärya-varyasya

çré-prasädasya cäjïayä

sa gantä sükara-kñetraà

mäsäm ekaà sthito 'bhavat

tataù—then; tv—indeed; äcärya-varyasya—o fthe

great acarya; çré-prasädasya—of the mercy;

ca—and; äjïayä—by the order; sa—he;

gantä—will go; sükara-kñetram—to Sukara-ksetra;

mäsam—month; ekam—one; sthitaù—staying;

abhavat—was.

Then, by the order of the merciful äcärya, he will go to

Sükara-kñetra and stay there for one month.

Text 87

dattvä danäny anekäni

go-mahé-gaja-vähinaù

ratnaà väso brähmaëebhyo

bhojanaà ca yad-icchayä

dattvä—giving; danäni—charities;

anekäni—many; go-mahé-gaja-vähinaù—cows, land, elephants,

and chariots; ratnam—jewels; väsaù—homes;

brähmaëebhyaù—to the brähmaëa; bhojanam—food;

ca—and; yad-icchayä—as they wished.

Then he will give to the brähmaëas many gifts. He will give

them cows, land, elephants, chariots, jewels, houses, and food,

as much as they desired.

Text 88

tatas tasmät sthalät so 'pi

nivartya guruëä saha

gaìgä-téra-sthalän paçyann

ägamiñyati sad-våtaù

tataù—then; tasmät—from that; sthalät—place; saù—he; api—also; nivartya—turning;

guruëä—guru; saha—with; gaìgä—of the Gaìgä;

téra-sthalän—the shore; paçyann—seeing;

ägamiñyati—will come; sad-våtaù—witb the saintly sages.

Then he will leave that place. Accompanied by his guru and

the great sages, he will see the Gaìgä's shore and then return.

Text 89

çayana-nagare saàsthäà

kariñyati sahänugaù

çré-guror äjïayä tatra

sämagréà sädhanaiù saha

çayana-nagare—in Sayana-nagara; saàsthäm—situation; kariñyati—will do; sahänugaù—with followers; çré-

guroù—of his guru; äjïayä—by the order;

tatra—there; sämagrém—things; sädhanaiù—spiritual

practices; saha—with.

He and his followers will stay in Çayana-nagara. By his

guru's order he will accumulate the ingredients for a yajïa.

Text 90

açvamedhaà karoti sma

sarva-jetä bhaviñyati

eka-cchatra-dharo bhütvä

çré-guroù çaraëaà gataù

açvamedham—an asvamedha-yajna; karoti—does;

sma—indeed; sarva-jetä—all-victorious; bhaviñyati—will

be; eka-cchatra-dharaù—the sole emperor;

bhütvä—becoming; çré-guroù—of the guru;

çaraëam—shelter; gataù—gone.

He will perform an açvamedha-yajïa and then he will

conquer all directions. By following his guru's orders he will

become the sole ruler of the earth.

Text 91

tato gaìgä-taöe ramye

pürvasyäà kroça-païcake

paramaikänta-rüpeëa

sevanaà tat kariñyati

tataù—then; gaìgä-taöe—on the Gaìgä's shore;

ramye—beautiful; pürvasyäm—in the east; kroça-païcake—40 miles; paramaikänta-rüpeëa—woith single-pointed

ocncentration; sevanam—worship; tat—that;

kariñyati—will do.

Forty miles to the east, with single-pointed concentration

he will worship a sacred place on the beautiful shore of the

Gaìgä.

Text 92

tatra bhägavaté värtä

bhava-rogi-vinäçiné

bhaviñyati mudä yuktä

samäjeñu sudhärmiëäm

tatra—there; bhägavaté—of the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; värtä—the description; bhava-rogi-

vinäçiné—which cures the disease of repeated birth and death; bhaviñyati—will be; mudä—happily;

yuktä—engaged; samäjeñu—in the assembly;

sudhärmiëäm—of the pious.

In that place, in an assembly of the pious, there will be a

blissful telling of the Supreme Personality of Godhead's

pastimes, a telling that cures the disease of repeated birth and

death.

Text 93

tatra pürëa-samäjeñu

teñäà madhye bhavän api

çåëoñi bhagavad-dharmaà

gantä çré-nirmalaà padam

tatra—there; pürëa-samäjeñu—ijn the assembly;

teñäm—of them; madhye—in the midst; bhavän—you;

api—also; çåëoñi—will hear; bhagavad-dharmam—the

science of devotional service; gantä—will go; çré-

nirmalam padam—to the Lord's transcendental abode.

You will also hear about the Lord in that assembly. In the end you will go to the Lord's transcendental abode.

Text 94

tapas taptaà mad-arthaà te

tasmäd etat prakäçitam

evaà devaà varaà dattvä

gato rämaù sahänugaù

tapaù—austerity; taptam—performed; mad-artham—for

My sake; te—of you; tasmät—therefore;

etat—this; prakäçitam—manifested; evam—thus;

devam—the Lord; varam—blessing; dattvä—given;

gataù—gone; rämaù—Balaräma; sahänugaù—with His

followers.

This will happen because you have performed austerities to

please Me.

After giving this blessing to Mäëòükadeva, Lord Balaräma,

accompanied by His followers, departed.

Text 95

çayana-nagaräc chuddhäd

éçänyäà diçi saàsthitam

sthänaà gaìgä-taöe ramyaà

kaëöakäd uttare 'bhavat

çayana-nagarät—from Çayana-nagara; çuddhät—pure;

éçänyäm—to the north; diçi—direction;

saàsthitam—situated; sthänam—place; gaìgä-taöe—on the

Gaìgä's shore; ramyam—beautiful; kaëöakät—from

Kaëöaka; uttare—north; abhavat—was.

To the north of Çayana-nagara and Kaëöhaka-tértha is a

beautiful place on the Gaìgä shore.

Text 96

puñpavatyä dakñiëe tu

kroçaikaà vistareëa ca

tatra saìkarñaëo devaù

sthitvä däna-paro 'bhavat

puñpavatyä—of Puñpavaté; dakñiëe—to the south;

tu—indeed; kroçaikam—two miles; vistareëa—across; ca—and; tatra—there; saìkarñaëo devaù—Lord

Saìkarñaëa; sthitvä—staying; däna-paraù—giving

charity; abhavat—did;

In a place two miles south of Pañpavaté, Lord Balaräma gave

charity.

Text 97

ghoöakaà daça-sähasraà

rathänäà çatakaà tathä

dvipaà sahasraà gäç caiva

dik-sahasraà dadau mudä

ghoöakam—horses; daça-sähasram—tne thousand;

rathänäm—chariots; çatakam—a hundred; tathä—then; dvipam—elephants; sahasram—a thousand;

gäù—cows; ca—and; eva—indeed; dik-sahasram—ten

thousand; dadau—gave; mudä—happily.

He happily gave ten thousand horses, one thousand chariots,

one thousand elephants, and ten thousand cows.

Text 98

tatra saìkarñaëaà devaà

püjayäm äsur ädarät

deväù samäyayuù sarve

åñayaç ca tapo-dhanäù

tatra—there; saìkarñaëam—Lord Balaräma; devam—the

Lord; püjayäm äsuù—worshiped; ädarät—with

respect; deväù—the demigods; samäyayuù—came;

sarve—all; åñayaù—the sages; ca—and; tapo-

dhanäù—wealthy in austerity.

Then all the demigods and the austere sages came there and

respectfully worshiped Lord Balaräma. They said:

namaù—obeisances; koleça-ghätäya—to the killer of

Kola; suräsura-vighätine—victorious over the demigods and

the demons; haläyudha—O Lord who carry a plow-weapon; namaù—obeisances; te—to You; astu—is;

musalästräya—who carry a club-weapon; te—to You;

namaù—obeisances; namaù—obeisances; saundarya-

rüpäya—handsome; täläìkäya—who holds the insignia of a tala

tree; namaù—obeisances; namaù—obeisances.

Obeisances to the killer of Kola! Obesiances to He who

defeats the demigods and demons! Obeisances to You, O Lord

carrying a plow-weapon! Obeisances to You, the Lord carrying a

club-weapon! Obeisances, obeisances, obeisances to You, the

handsome Lord carrying a palm-tree flag!

iti çrutvä stutià teñäà

saìkarñaëa uväca ha

varaà bruvantuvaù sarve

bhavatäà yad-abhépsitam

iti—thus; çrutvä—hearing; stutim—the prayer; teñäm—of them; saìkarñaëa—Balaräma; uväca—said; ha—Oh; varam—blessing; bruvantuvaù—say;

sarve—all; bhavatäm—of You; yad-abhépsitam—what is

desired.

Hearing their prayers, Lord Balaräma said, "You may

ask for the benedictions you desire."

çré-dvija-devä ücuù

yadä yadä vayaà yuktäù

smarämo bhavataù padam

sarva-bädha-vinirmuktä

bhavämaç ca taväjïayä

çré-dvija-devä ücuù—the demigods and brähmaëas said;

yadä yadä—whenever; vayam—we; yuktäù—engaged;

smarämaù—remember; bhavataù—of You; padam—the

feet; sarva-bädha-vinirmuktä—free of all impediemtns; bhavämaù—we become; ca—and; tava—of You;

äjïayä—by the order.

The demigods and brähmaëas said: Please free us from all

troubles when we remember Your feet.

çré-räma uväca

yadä yadä mäà smaratha

tadähaà çaraëägatän

rakñitä syäà kalau nünaà

iti satyaà vaco mama

çré-räma—Çré Balaräma; uväca—said; yadä

yadä—whenevr; mäm—Me; smaratha—remember;

tadä—then; aham—I; çaraëägatän—to they who take

shelter; rakñitä—the protector; syäm—will be;

kalau—in Kali-yuga; nünam—indeed; iti—thus;

satyam—truth; vacaù—words; mama—of Mine.

Çré Balaräma said: In Kali-yuga, whenever you remember Me

and take shelter of Me, I will protect you. This is My promise.

atra sthale varaà präptaà

püjitaà muni-puìgavaiù

ataù saìkarñaëa-sthänaà

bhaviñyati kalau yuge

atra—here; sthale—in the place;

varam—blessing; präptam—attained;

püjitam—worshiped; muni-puìgavaiù—by the great sages;

ataù—then; saìkarñaëa-sthänam—the place of Lord

Balaräma; bhaviñyati—will be; kalau—in Kali;

yuge—yuga.

This place, where the great sages worshiped Lord Balaräma

and obtained a boon from Him, in Kali-yuga will be known as

Saìkarñaëa-sthäna.

Texts 104 and 105

yasmin snäsyanti gaìgäyäà

devän sampüjayanti ye

däsyanti dänaà viprebhyo

bhojanaà kärayanti ye

viñëuà sampüjayanti sma

sa-phalaà jévitaà kñitau

te yänti daivata-sthänaà

kämé präpnoti kämanam

yasmin—where; snäsyanti—will bathe; gaìgäyäm—in

the Gaìgä; devän—demigods; sampüjayanti—will

worship; ye—who; däsyanti—will give;

dänam—charity; viprebhyaù—to the brähmaëas;

bhojanam—food; kärayanti—will do; ye—who;

viñëum—Lord Viñëu; sampüjayanti—worship;

sma—indeed; sa-phalam—with the result;

jévitam—living; kñitau—on the earth; te—they;

yänti—go; daivata—of the Lord; sthänam—to the

place; kämi—desiring; präpnoti—attain;

kämanam—desire.

They who bathe in the Gaìgä at this place, worship the

demigods, feed the brähmaëas, give them charity, and worship Lord

Viñëu, attain the real goal of life. They go to the divine abode.

They attain their desires.

tataù parivåto rämaù

sväà puréà saïjagäma ha

kola-rakño-vadhaà kåtvä

snätvä viñëu-padé-jale

tataù—then; parivåtaù—accompoanied; rämaù—Lord

Balaräma; sväm—to His won; purém—city; sa 24jagäma—went; ha—indeed; kola-rakño-vadham—the

killing of the demon Kola; kåtvä—having done;

snätvä—bathing; viñëu-padé-jale—in the water that had washed

Lord Viñëu's feet.

In this way, after killing the Kola demon, and after bathing

in the Gaìgä, which is a stream that has washed Lord Viñëu's

feet, Lord Balaräma, accompanied by His associates, returned to

His city.

rämasya baladevasya

kathäà yaù çåëuyän naraù

sarva-päpa-vinirmuktaù

sa yäti paramäà gatim

rämasya baladevasya—of Lord Balaräma;

kathäm—narration; yaù—one who; çåëuyät—hears;

naraù—a pearson; sarva-päpa—from all sins;

vinirmuktaù—freed; sa—he; yäti—goes; paramäm—to

the supreme; gatim—abode.

A person who hears these pastimes of Lord Balaräma becomes

free from all sins and goes to the Lord's supreme abode.
