Akrüra's Arrival

Gokula.
Çré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, happy to execute King
Kaàsa's mission, Akrüra climbed on a chariot and went to Nanda's
Gokula.

paräm—supreme; bhaktim—devotion; hy—indeed; upagataù—attained; çré-kåñëe—for Çré Kåñëa;
puruñottame—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;
evam—thus; vicärayan—thinking; buddhyä—with
intelligence; pathi—on the road; gacchan—going; mahä-matiù—the noble-hearted one.
As he traveled on the road, noble-hearted Akrüra meditated
on Çré Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He was filled
with devotion for the Lord.

kratüttamam—the best of yajnas; térthäöanam—pilgrimage; vä—or; dvija-sevanam—serving the brähmaëas;
çubham—beautiful; yena—by which; adya—today;
drakñyämi—I will see; harim—Lord Kåñëa; pareçvaram—the
Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Çré Akrüra said: How many pious deeds did I perform in the
sacred land of Bhärata-varña? What unselfish charity did I give?
How many great yajïas did I perform? How many pilgrimages
did I make? How many brähmaëas did I diligently serve? What did I
do that today I will be able to see Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead?

tapaù su-taptaà kim alaà purä kåtaà
sat-sevanaà bhakti-yutaà mayä kåtam
yenaiva me darçanam adya durlabhaà
çré-kåñëadevasya puro bhaviñyati
tapaù su-taptam—performed great austerities;
kim—what?; alam—great; purä—before;
kåtam—done; sat-sevanam—serving the great souls;
bhakti-yutam—with devotion; mayä—by me;
kåtam—done; yena—by which; eva—indeed; me—of
me; darçanam—the sight; adya—today;
durlabham—difficult to attain; çré-kåñëadevasya—of Lord
Kåñëadeva; puraù—in the presence; bhaviñyati—will be.
What great austerities did I perform in my previous births?
What saintly devotees did I earnestly serve? What did I do that
today I will become able to see Lord Kåñëadeva, who is so
difficult to see?

teñäà bhavo me sa-phalo mahé-tale
yan-netra-gämé bhagavän sureçvaraù
kåtvätha tad-darçanam adya durlabhaà
sadyaù kåtärtho bhavitäsmi sarvataù
teñäm—of them; bhavaù—the birth; me—of me;
sa-phalaù—fruitful; mahé-tale—on this earth; yan-
netra-gämé—coming before my eyes; bhagavän—the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; sureçvaraù—the master of the
demigods; kåtvä—doing; atha—now; tad-
darçanam—the sight of Him; adya—today;
durlabham—rare; sadyaù—at once;
kåtärthaù—successful; bhavitä—will become; asmi—I; sarvataù—in all respects.
My birth on this earth has now borne its perfect fruit, for
the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of the demigods,
will come before my eyes. When I see Him, the Lord who is so
difficult to see, my life will attain the greatest success.

paçyaï chakunam uttamam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; iti—thus;
saïcintayan—thinking; kåñëam—Kåñëa;
paçyan—seeing; çakunam uttamam—a good omen;
sandhyäyäm—at sunset; gokulam—Gokula;
präptaù—attained; ratha-sthaù—riding on a chariot;
gandiné-sutaù—Akrüra.
Çré Närada said: Thinking of Kåñëa in this way, and seeing a
very auspicious omen, at sunset Akrüra entered Gokula.
Text 7
kåñëa-pädäbja-cihnäni
yaväìkuça-yutäni ca
tad-räga-yuk-parägäëi
rajäàsi sa dadarça kau
kåñëa-pädäbja-cihnäni—Lord Kåñëa's lotus footprints;
yaväìkuça-yutäni—marked with a barleycorn adn elephant-goad; ca—and; tad-räga-yuk-parägäëi—mixed with kunkuma;
rajäàsi—the dust; sa—he; dadarça—saw; kau—on the
ground.
Then in the dust He saw Lord Kåñëa's lotus footprints marked
with the signs of a barleycorn and elephant-goad and sprinkled
with kuìkuma powder.
Text 8
tad-darçanautsukya-bhakti-
bhävänanda-samäkulaù
rathät samutpatya teñu
luöhaàç cäçru mumoca ca
tat—Him; darçana—to see; autsukya—eagerness; bhakti—devotion; bhäva—love; änanda—and bliss; samäkulaù—agitated; rathät—from the chariot;
samutpatya—descending; teñu—in them; luöhaàç—rolling
about; ca—and; açru—tears; mumoca—shed;
ca—and.
Shedding tears, and overcome with bliss, love, and great
yearning to see the Lord, Akrüra jumped from the chariot and
rooled about in those footprints.

yeñäà çré-kåñëadevasya
bhaktiù syäd dhådi maithila
teñäm ä-brahmaëaù sarvaà
tåëavaj jagataù sukham
yeñäm—of whom; çré-kåñëadevasya—of Çré Kåñëadeva; bhaktiù—devotion; syät—is; hådi—in the heart; maithila—O king of Mithilä; teñäm—of them; ä-
brahmaëaù—up to Lord Brahmnä; sarvam—all; tåëavat—like
a piece of straw; jagataù—of the world; sukham—the
happiness.
O king of Mithilä, they who in their hearts love Kåñëa think
all this material world's happiness, even up Brahmä's happiness,
is like a a handful of dry straw.

rathärüòhas tato 'krüraù
kñaëän nanda-puraà gataù
ghoseñu sa-balaà kåñëaà
ägacchantaà dadarça ha
rathärüòhaù—riding on a chariot; tataù—then;
akrüraù—Akrüra; kñaëät—in a moment; nanda-
puram—nanda's village; gataù—attained; ghoseñu—among
the cows; sa-balam—with Balaräma; kåñëam—Kåñëa; ägacchantam—coming; dadarça—saw; ha—indeed.
Riding on his chariot, in a moment Akrüra entered Nanda's
village and saw Kåñëa and Balaräma approaching him.

devau—the Lord; puräëau—ancient;
puruñau—persons; pareçau—the Supreme Personality of
Godhead; padmekñaëau—lotus eyed; çyämala-gaura—fair
and dark; varëau—colors; yathä—as; indranéla—of
sapphires; dhvaja—a flag; vajra—of diamonds;
çailau—a mountain; samäçritau—taken shelter;
tau—They; pathi—on the path; räma-kåñëau—Kåñëa and
Balaräma; bälärka—rising sun; maulé—crowns;
vasanam—garments; taòit—lightning; dyuté—splendor; varñäçaran-megha-rucam—the color of an autumn cloud;
dadhänau—wearing; dåñövä—seeing; sa—he;
türëam—at once; sva-rathät—from hus chariot;
gataù—come; adhaù—below; tayoù—both; nataù—bowed
down; bhakti-yutaù—with devotion; papäta—fell.
Seeing on the pathway the two ancient Supreme Persons, Their
eyes lotus flowers, Their complexions fair and dark like a
sapphire flag and a diamond mountain, wearing crowns like the
rising sun and garments splendid as lightning and autumn clouds,
Akrüra, overcome with love, jumped from his chariot and fell down
before Them to offer his respects.

tad-änanaà bäñpa-kuläkulekñaëaà
romaïcitaà vékñya hariù pareçvaraù
dorbhyäà samutthäpya ghåëäturo 'çru
mumoca bhaktaà parirabhya mädhavaù
tad-änanam—his face; bäñpa-kula—with tears;
äkula—filled; ékñaëam—eyes; romaïcitam—hairs
standing erect; vékñya—seeing; hariù—Kåñëa;
pareçvaraù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; dorbhyäm—with
both arms; samutthäpya—rising; ghåëäturaù—overcome
with mercy; açru—tears; mumoca—shed;
bhaktam—the devotee; parirabhya—embraced;
mädhavaù—Lord Kåñëa.
Gazing at Akrüra's face and seeing his eyes filled with
tears and the hairs of his body erect with joy, Lord Kåñëa,
overcome with feelings of compassion, and shedding tears Himself,
picked Akrüra up and with both arms embraced His devotee.

evaà militvä sa-balaç ca taà hariù
sadyaù samänéya varäsanaà dadau
nivedya gäà cätithaye su-bhojanaà
rasävåtaà prema-yuto hy upäharat
evam—in this way; militvä—meeting; sa-balaç—with
Balaräma; ca—and; tam—Him; hariù—Kåñëa;
sadyaù—at once; samänéya—taking; varäsanam—a nice
seat; dadau—gave; nivedya—offering;
gäm—eloqurnt words; ca—and; atithaye—for a guest; su-bhojanam—food; rasävåtam—delicious; prema-
yutaù—filled with love; hy—indeed; upäharat—offered.
Kåñëa and Balaräma offered him a comfortable seat, welcomed
him with eloquent words, and offered Their guest a delicious
meal.
Text 15
tam äha nandaù parirabhya dorbhyäà
aho kathaà jévasi kaàsa-räjye
gata-trapo yo nijaghäna balän
svasuù kathaà so 'nya-janeñu mohé
tam—to him; äha—said; nandaù—Nanda;
parirabhya—embracing; dorbhyäm—with both arms;
ahaù—Oh; katham—how?; jévasi—you live; kaàsa—of
Kaàsa; räjye—in the kingdom; gata-
trapaù—shameless; yaù—who; nijaghäna—killed;
balän—chuldren; svasuù—of his sister; katham—how?; saù—he; anya-janeñu—other people; mohé—kind.
Nanda embraced Akrüra with both arms and said, "You
are kind to others. How can you live in the kingdom of Kaàsa, who
killed the sons of his own sister?

gåhaà gate nanda-vare haris taà
papraccha sarvaà kuçalaà sva-pitroù
tathä yadünäà kila bändhavänäà
kaàsasya sarvaà viparéta-buddhim
gåham—to the home; gate—gone; nanda-vare—when
King Nanda; hariù—Kåñëa; tam—him;
papraccha—asked; sarvam—all; kuçalam—welfare;
sva-pitroù—of His father; tathä—then; yadünäm—of the
Yadavas; kila—indeed; bändhavänäm—kinsmen;
kaàsasya—of Kaàsa; sarvam—all; viparéta-
buddhim—wickedness.
When Nanda had gone, Kåñëa asked about the welfare of His
father and His kinsmen, the Yädavas, and about the wicked deeds
of Kaàsa.

çré-akrüra uväca
paraçvo 'hani he deva
hantuà çaurià samudyataù
khaòga-päëir bhoja-räjo
näradena niväritaù
çré-akrüra uväca—Çré Akrüra said; paraçvo 'häni—the day
after tommorrow; he—O; deva—Lord; hantum—to
kill; çaurim—Vasudeva; samudyataù—eager;
khaòga-päëiù—with a sword in hand; bhoja-räjaù—Kaàsa;
näradena—by Närada; niväritaù—forbidden.
Çré Akrüra said: The day before yesterday Kaàsa, sword in
hand, was about to kill Vasudeva until Närada Muni stopped him.
Text 18
duùkhitäù bändhaväù sarve
yädavä bhaya-vihvaläù
sa-kuöumbäù kaàsa-bhayäd
bhüman deçäntaraà gatäù
duùkhitäù—unhappy; bändhaväù—kinsmen;
sarve—all; yädavä—Yadavas; bhaya-
vihvaläù—frightened; sa-kuöumbäù—with their familites; kaàsa-bhayät—out of fear of Kaàsa; bhüman—O Lord;
deçäntaram—to other countries; gatäù—gone.
O Lord, unhappy and terrified of Kåñëa, your kinsmen, the
Yädavas, have fled with their families to other countries.
Text 19
adyaiva yädavän hantuà
devän jetuà samudyataù
anyat kim api kau kartuà
icchate daitya-räò balé
adya—now; eva—indeed; yädavän—the Yadavas;
hantum—to kill; devän—the demigods; jetum—to
defeat; samudyataù—eager; anyat—another; kim
api—something; kau—on the earth; kartum—to do;
icchate—desires; daitya-räò—the demon-king;
balé—powerful.
Now the powerful demon-king Kaàsa wants to kill the Yädavas,
conquer the demigods, and perform more atrocities on this earth.
Text 20
tasmäd bhavadbhyäà gantavyaà
kuçalaà kartum avyayam
bhavantau hi vinä käryaà
kiïcin na syät satäà prabhu
tasmät—therefore; bhavadbhyäm—by You both;
gantavyam—should be gone; kuçalam—auspiciousness;
kartum—to do; avyayam—eternal; bhavantau—You;
hi—indeed; vinä—except for; käryam—the duty;
kiïcit—something; na—not; syät—is;
satäm—of the devotees; prabhu—O Lord.
Therefore You two Lords should go there and bring eternal
auspiciousness to Your devotees. O my Lords, no one but You can
bring auspiciousness to Your devotees.

atha tasya vacaù çrutvä
sa-balo bhagavän hariù
nanda-räja-matenäha
gopän kärya-karän idam
çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; atha—then;
tasya—of him; vacaù—the words; çrutvä—hearing;
sa-balaù—with Balaräma; bhagavän—the Supreme Personality of
Godhead; hariù—Kåñëa; nanda-räja-matena—after
conferring with King Nanda; äha—said; gopän—to the
gopas; kärya-karän—eager to do what He says;
idam—this.
After hearing Akrüra's words, and after conferring with
Balaräma and King Nanda, Lord Kåñëa addressed the gopas, who were
eager to follow His command.

nava—nine; upanandäù—Upanandas; ca—and;
tathä—so; ñaò—the six; våñabhänavaù—Våñabhänus;
mathuräm—to Mathurä; tu—indeed; gamiñyanti—will
go; sarve—all; prätaù—in the morning;
samutthitäù—risen; sarve—all; tu—indeed;
gorasam—milk products; tasmät—from that; dadhi-
dugdha-ghåtädikam—beginning with yogurt, milk, and ghee.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: King Nanda,
Balaräma, the nine Nandas and Upanandas, the six Våñabhänus, and
all the adult gopas will rise early tommorrow morning and, taking
gifts of milk, yogurt, ghee, and other milk products, will go to
Mathurä City.

sopäyanam ataù param
rathäàç ca çakaöaiù särdhaà
samarthän kurutäçu vai
gåhétvä—taking; ekätra—in one place; kartavyam—to
be done; sopäyanam—with gifts; ataù—then;
param—thern; rathän—chariots; ca—and;
çakaöaiù—carts; särdham—with; samarthän—able;
kuruta—should do; äçu—at once; vai—indeed.
These gifts should now be placed on all the chariots and
wagons.

iti çrutvä kärya-kärä
gopäù sarve gåhe gåhe
çåëvanténäà gopikänäà
ücuù sarvaà yathoditam
çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; iti—thus;
çrutvä—hearing; kärya-kärä—the servants;
gopäù—gopas; sarve—all; gåhe—at home; gåhe—after
home; çåëvanténäm—hearing; gopikänäm—of the
gopés; ücuù—said; sarvam—all; yathä—as;
uditam—said.
Çré Närada said: When they heard these words, all the gopas
repeated them to the gopés in home after home.

tac chrutvodvigna-hådayä
gopyo viraha-vihvaläù
parasparaà väkyam ücuù
sarväs tä hi gåhe gåhe
tat—that; çrutvä—hearing; udvigna—agitated; hådayäù—hearts; gopyaù—the gopés; viraha-
vihvaläù—overwhelmed by the thought of separation;
parasparam—among themselves; väkyam—words;
ücuù—spoke; sarväù—all; tä—they; hi—indeed; gåhe—in home; gåhe—after home.
Agitated at heart to hear these words, and fearing a
separation from Lord Kåñëa, in home after home all the gopés
talked among themselves.

prasthänasya ca varteyaà
çré-kåñëasya mahätmanaù
våñabhänu-varasyäpi
gåhe präptä nåpeçvara
prasthänasya—gone away; ca—and; värtä—the
news; iyam—thius; çré-kåñëasya—of Çré Kåñëa;
mahätmanaù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; våñabhänu-
varasya—of King Våñabhänu; api—also; gåhe—in the
home; präptä—attained; nåpeçvara—O king of kings.
O king of kings, the news that Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, would go on a journey, also entered the
home of King Våñabhänu.

gamiñyato bhärtur atéva-duùkhitäù
çrutvätha värtäà sadasi hy äkäçmät
sampräpa mürchaà våñabhänu-nandiné
rambheva bhümau patitä marud-dhatä
gamiñyataù—about to depart; bhärtuù—the husband;
atéva-duùkhitäù—very unhappy; çrutvä—hearing;
atha—then; värtäm—the news; sadasi—in the
assembly; hy—indeed; äkäçmät—suddenly;
sampräpa—attained; mürcham—fainting; våñabhänu-
nandiné—the daughter of King Våñabhänu; rambhä—a banana
tree; iva—like; bhümau—to tyhe ground;
patitä—fallen; marud-dhatä—stuck by the wind.
When in the royal assembly She heard that Her master would
go on a journey, King Våñabhänu's daughter, Çré Rädhä, at once
fainted. She was like a banana tree struck by a great wind.

käçcit parimläna-mukha-çriyo 'bhavan
prakaìkané-bhüta-karäìguléyakäù
sadyaù çlathad-bhüñaëa-keça-bändhanäs
citrärpitärambhä ivävatasthire
käçcit—some; parimläna—withered; mukha—of the
face; çriyaù—the beauty; abhavan—became;
prakaìkané-bhüta—become brcaelets; karäìguléyakäù—finger-
rings; sadyaù—at once; çlathat—loosened;
bhüñaëa—ornaments; keça—of the hair;
bändhanäù—tying; citrärpitärambhäù—painted pictures;
iva—like; ävatasthire—stood.
Some gopés, the beauty of their faces suddenly withered
away, the rings slipping like bracelets from their suddenly
emaciated fingers, their ornaments falling, and their hair
dishevelled, were stunned and motionless as if they were painted
pictures.

çré-kåñëa govinda hare muräre
käçcid vadantyaù sva-gåhe 'ti-vihvaläù
visåjya karmäëi gåhasya sarvato
yogéva cänanda-gatä nåpeçvara
çré-kåñëa—Çré Kåñëa; govinda—Govinda;
hare—Hari; muräre—Mauräri; käçcit—some;
vadantyaù—saying; sva-gåhe—in their own home; ati-
vihvaläù—very upset; visåjya—abandoning; karmäëi—their
duties; gåhasya—of the home; sarvataù—everywhere; yogé—a yogi; iva—like; ca—and;
änanda—bliss; gatäù—attained; nåpeçvara—O king of
kings.
O king of kings, some gopés became very upset. In their
homes they called out, "O Çré Kåñëa! O Govinda! O Hari! O
Muräri!" Neglecting their household duties they sat down like
yogés fixed in a trance of bliss.

käçcit samarthas tu parasparaà vacaù
sametya räjan yugapat sakhé-janam
ücuù skhalad-gadgada-kaëöha-väcaù
svataù sravad-bäñpa-kalä-vahad-dåçaù
käçcit—some; samarthaù—able; tu —indeed;
parasparam—among themselves; vacaù—words;
sametya—meeting; räjan—O king; yugapat—at the same
moment; sakhé-janam—to their friends; ücuù—said; skhalad-gadgada-kaëöha-väcaù—their throats filled with broken
words; svataù—personally; sravat—flowing;
bäñpa—tears; kalä—drops; vahat—flowing;
dåçaù—eyes.
O king, some met and talked among themselves, their throats
choked with stuttering words and their eyes with streams of
tears.

çré-gopya ücuù
aho 'ti-nirmohi-janasya citraà
paraà caritraà gadituà na yogyam
mukhena cänyaà hådi bhavyam anyad
devo na jänäti kuto manuñyaù
çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; ahaù—Oh; ati-
nirmohi-janasya—of the unbewildered philosophgers;
citram—wonderful; param—transcendental;
caritram—pastimes; gaditum—to describe; na—not;
yogyam—proper; mukhena—for the mouth; ca—and;
anyam—another; hådi—in the heart; bhavyam—may be; anyat—another; devaù—demigod; na—not;
jänäti—knows; kutaù—where?; manuñyaù—human.
The gopés said: Even the philosophers free of all illusion
cannot with their mouths describe the wonderful transcendental
pastimes of Lord Kåñëa or meditate on them in their hearts. Even
the great demigods cannot understand Lord Kåñëa's pastimes. How
can ordinary human beings understand them?

räse 'pi yad yad gaditaà tu tat tad
vihäya gantuà samavasthito 'yam
gate puréà präëa-patäv aho 'smin
kià kià na kañöaà bata no 'bhaviñyat
räse—during the räsa dance; api—also; yad
yat—whatever; gaditam—spoken; tu—indeed; tat
tat—that; vihäya—abandoning; gantum—to go;
samavasthitaù—is prepared; ayam—He; gate—when He is
gone; purém—to the city; präëa—of our lives;
patau—the master; ahaù—Oh; asmin—He;
kim—what?; kim—what?; na—not;
kañöam—calamity; bata—alas; naù—of us;
abhaviñyat—could be.
Turning His back on the words of love He spoke to us during
the räsa dance, He is now about to leave us. Alas! If He, the
Lord of our lives, goes to Mathurä City, what calamity will not
fall on us?
