Çré Baladeva-vivähotsava

Lord Balaräma's Wedding

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

itthaà mayä te kathitaà

dvärakä-väsa-käraëam

vivähädi-kathäù sarvä

vadiñyämi pareçayoù

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; ittham—thus; mayä—by me; te—to you; kathitam—spoken; dvärakä-väsa—residence in Dvaraka; käraëam—the cause; viväha—wedding; ädi—beginning with; kathäù—topic; sarva—all; vadiñyämi—I will tell; pareçayoù—of the two Supreme Personality of Godheads.

In this way I have described to you the reason the Lord lives in Dvärakä. Now I will tell you everything of the marriages of Kåñëa and Balaräma, the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead.

Text 2

pürvaà çré-baladevasya

vivähaà çåëu maithila

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà

äyur-vardhanam uttamam

pürvam—before; çré-baladevasya—of Lord Balaräma; viväham—the wedding; çåëu—please hear; maithila—O king of Mithila; sarva-päpa—all sins; haram—removing; puëyam—sacred; äyur-vardhanam—increasing the duration of life; uttamam—transcendental.

O king of Mithilä, please hear the story of Lord Balaräma's wedding, a sacred and transcendental story that removes all sins and increases the span of one's life.

Text 3

änarto näma räjäbhüt

sürya-vaàse mahä-manäù

yan-nämnänarta-deçaù syät

samudre bhéma-nädini

änartaù—Anarta; näma—name; räjä—a king; abhüt—was; sürya-vaàse—in the sun-god's dynasty; mahä-manäù—nible-hearted; yan-nämnä—by whose name; änarta-deçaù—the country of Anarta; syät—is; samudre—in the ocean; bhéma-nädini—filled with terrible sounds.

A noble-hearted king named Änarta was born in the sürya dynasty. The country of Änarta-deça, which was created where there once was only the ocean filled with terrible sounds, was named after him.

Text 4

raivato näma tat-putras

cakravarté guëäkaraù

räjyaà cakära sa puréà

vinirmäya kuçasthalém

raivataù—Raivata; näma—named; tat-putraù—his son; cakravarté—emperor; guëäkaraù—virtuous; räjyam—the empire; cakära—did; sa—he; purém—to the capitol; vinirmäya—created; kuçasthalém—Kuçasthalé.

His son was the virtuous king Raivata, who ruled the kingdom from his capitol Kuçasthalé.

Text 5

tasya putra-çataà cäséd

revaté näma kanyakä

sarvottamaà ciraïjévaà

sundaraà varam icchaté

tasya—of him; putra-çatam—a hundred sons; ca—and; äsét—was; revaté—Revaté; näma—named; kanyakä—a daughter; sarvottamam—the best of all; ciraïjévam—who would live a long time; sundaram—handsom; varam—husband; icchati—desires.

He had a hundred sons and one daughter. His daughter, who was named Revaté, yearned to have a husband that was handsome, lived eternally, and was better than all other men.

ekadä ratham ästhäya

hema-ratna-vibhüñitam

äropya svaà duhitaraà

raivataù paryaöan bhuvam

ekadä—one day; ratham—a chariot; ästhäya—mounting; hema-ratna-vibhüñitam—decorated with gold and jewels; äropya—placing; svam—own; duhitaram—daughter; raivataù—King Raivata; paryaöan—wandered; bhuvam—the earth.

One day he placed his daughter on a chariot decorated with gold and jewels, and wandered the earth to find a proper husband.

Text 7

präpto yoga-balenäpi

brahmalokaà çubhävaham

kanyä-varaà pariprañöuà

brahmäëaà praëanäma ha

präptaù—attained; yoga-balena—by mystic power; api—also; brahmalokam—Brahmaloka; çubhävaham—auspicious; kanyä-varam—husband for her daughter; paariprañöum—to ask; brahmäëam—Brahma; praëanäma—bowed down; ha—indeed.

By his mystic power he traveled to Brahmaloka. His intention to ask for a proper husband for his daughter, he bowed before the demigod Brahmä

Text 8

gäyantyäà pürva-cittyäà ca

sthito labdha-kñaëaù kñaëam

eka-cittaà vidhià jïätvä

sväbhipräyaà nyavedayat

gäyantyam—singing; pürva-cittyäm—Purvacitti; ca—and; sthitaù—situated; labdha-kñaëaù—finding a proper moment; kñaëam—a moment; eka-cittam—one thought; vidhim—to Brahma; jïätvä—understanding; sväbhipräyam—his intention; nyavedayat—spoke.

As the apsarä Pürvacitti was singing, he found his opportunity. Aware that now he had Brahmä's attention, he spoke what was in his heart.

Text 9

çré-raivata uväca

paraù puräëo jagad-aìkuro 'bhüù

pürëaù parätmä parameçvaro 'si

sthitaù sadä dhämani pärameñöhya

såjasy alaà päsi ca hiàsasédam

çré-raivataù—Çré Raivata; uväca—said; paraù—great; puräëaù—ancient; jagad-aìkuraù—from whom the universe has sprouted; abhüù—you are; pürëaù—perfect; parätmä—the great soul; parameçvaraù—the supreme controller; asi—you are; sthitaù—situated; sadä—always; dhämani—in your abode; pärameñöhya—O Brahmä; såjasy—you create; alam—greatly; pasi—protect; ca—and; hiàsasi—destroy; idam—this universe.

Çré Raivata said: You are the greatest, the oldest, the seed from which this universe has sprouted, the great soul and the great controller. O Brahmä, you stay always in your own abode. You create, maintain, and destroy this universe.

Text 10

vedä mukhaà dharma uras tathaiva

påñöhaà hy adharmaç ca manur manéñä

aìgäni devä asuräç ca pädäù

sarvä såtir deva tanus tava syät

vedäù—the Vedas; mukham—mouth; dharma—religion; uraù—chest; {}; tatha—so; eva—indeed; påñöham—back; hy—indeed; adharmaç—irreligion; ca—and; manuù—Manu; manéñä—intelligence; aìgäni—limbs; devä—the demigods; asuräç—the demons; ca—and; pädäù—feet; sarvä—all; såtiù—creation; deva—O lord; tanuù—the body; tava—of you; syät—is.

O lord, the Vedas are Your mouth, religion is your chest, irreligion is your back, Manu is your intelligence, the demigods are your limbs, the demons are your feet, and this entire creation is your body.

Text 11

karoñi hastämalakaà ca viçvaà

netuà prabhuù särathivad guëeñu

ekas tvam ekaà ca vidhäya jälaà

grasiñyase sarvam ivorëanäbhiù

karoñi—you do; hasta—in the hand; ämalakam—an amalaka fruit; ca—and; viçvam—the universe; netum—to bring; prabhuù—able; särathivat—like a charioteer; guëeñu—among the modes; ekaù—one; tvam—you; ekam—one; ca—and; vidhäya—placing; jälam—network; grasiñyase—you will swallow; sarvam—all; iva—like; urëanäbhiù—a spider.

This universe is like a small ämalaka fruit in your hand. You are like a charioteer driving this universe through the modes of nature. You are like a spider and this universe is your web. In the future you will swallow up this entire universe.

Text 12

mahendra-dhiñëyaà tava vaçyam asti

kià särvabhaumaà kim u yoga-siddhiù

yaù pärameñöhyaà ca sadä sthito 'si

tasmai namo 'nanta-guëäya bhümne

mahendra-dhiñëyam—the abode of Lord Indra; tava—of you; vaçyam—under the control; asti—is; kim—what?; särvabhaumam—supremacy; kim—what?; u—indeed; yoga-siddhiù—the perfection of yoga; yaù—what; pärameñöhyam—supremacy; ca—and; sadä—always; sthitaù—situated; asi—you are; tasmai—to him; namaù—obeisances; ananta-guëäya—limitless virtues; bhümne—to the lord.

The realm of King Indra is under your control, what to speak of the realms of ordinary kings or the perfections of yoga. You always stay in the highest realm. To you, O lord of limitless virtue, I offer my respectful obeisances.

Text 13

bhavän svayambhür jagatäà pitämaho

vidhe sura-jyeñöha iti prabhävataù

asya varaà sarva-guëaà ciräyuñaà

vadäçu mäà divyam açeña-darçanaù

bhavän—you; svayambhüù—self-born; jagatäm—of the universes; pitämahaù—the granfather; vidhe—O Brahmä; sura-jyeñöha—the best of the demigods; iti—thus; prabhävataù—by the power; asya—of him; varam—husband; sarva-guëam—having all virtues; ciräyuñam—living eternally; vada—please tell; äçu—at once; mäm—to me; divyam—divine; açeña-darçanaù—seeing everything.

You are self-born. You are the grandfather of all in the universe. You are the best of the demigods. You see everything. O lord, please tell me who should become my daughter's husband, a divine husband that lives forever and has all virtues.

Text 14

çré-närada uväca

etac chrutvä tato brahmä

svayambhüù sarva-darçanaù

raivataà präha räjänaà

prahasann iva maithila

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; etac—this; chrutvä—hearing; tataù—then; brahmä—Brahmä; svayambhüù—self-born; sarva-darçanaù—seeing everything; raivatam—to Raivata; präha—said; räjänam—King; prahasann—smiling; iva—like; maithila—O king of Mithila.

Çré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, when he heard these words, self-born Brahmä, who sees everything, smiled and spoke to King Raivata.

Text 15

çré-brahmoväca

atra kñaëena he räjan

bhuvi kälo mahä-balé

tvaraà vyatitas tri-nava-

catur-yuga-vikalpitaù

çré-brahmä uväca—Çré Brahmä said; atra—here; kñaëena—in a moment; he—O; räjan—king; bhuvi—on the earth; kälaù—time; mahä-balé—very powerful; tvaram—quickly; vyatitaù—surpassing; tri-nava-catur-yuga-vikalpitaù—counted as four yugas.

Çré Brahmä said: O king, a moment in this realm of Brahmaloka is equal to four yugas on the earth.

Text 16

na santi martya-loke tat-

puträù pauträù sa-bändhaväù

tat-putra-pautra-naptåëäà

goträëi ca na çåëmahe

na—not; santi—are; martya-loke—on the earth; tat-puträù—your children; pauträù—grandchildren; sa-bändhaväù—relatives; tat-putra-pautra-naptåëäm—their children, gandchildren, great-grandchilren; goträëi—descnedents; ca—and; na—not; çåëmahe—we hear.

Your children, grandchildren, and other relatives are no longer on the earth. We do not hear anything of the descendents of your children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. The dynasty no longer exists.

Text 17

tad gaccha sarva-mukhyäya

nara-ratnäya çäçvate

kanyä-ratnam idaà räjan

baladeväya dehi bhoù

tat—therefore; gaccha—go; sarva-mukhyäya—to the best of all; nara-ratnäya—the jewel of men; çäçvate—eternal; kanyä-ratnam—jewel of girls; idam—this; räjan—O king; baladeväya—to Lord Balaräma; dehi—give; bhoù—Oh.

Therefore you should approach Lord Balaräma, who is the best of all, the jewel of men, and the person that lives eternally, and offer your jewel-daughter to Him.

Text 18

paripürëatamau säkñäd

golokädhipaté prabhü

bhuvo bhärävatäräyä-

vatérëau bala-keçavau

paripürëatamau—the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead; säkñät—directly; golokädhipaté—the two masters of Goloka; prabhü—the two Lords; bhuvaù—of the earth; bhära—the burden; avatäräya—to remove; avatérëau—descended; bala—Balaräma; keçavau—and Kåñëa.

Kåñëa and Balaräma are the two original Supreme Personalities of Godhead. They are Goloka's two masters, who have descended to remove the earth's burden.

Text 19

asaìkhya-brahmäëòa-paté

vasudevätmajau haré

dvärakäyaà viräjete

yadubhir bhakta-vatsalau

asaìkhya—numberless; brahmäëòa—of universes; paté—the masters; vasudevätmajau—the sons of Vasudeva; haré—the two Lords; dvärakäyam—in Dvärakä; viräjete—are splendidly manifest; yadubhiù—with the Yädavas; bhakta-vatsalau—kind to Their devotees.

Kåñëa and Balaräma, who are the two Supreme Lords, who are the two masters of numberless universes, who are Vasudeva's two sons, and who are kind to Their devotees, are now spleniddly manifest in Dvärakä, with the Yädavas as Their companions.

çré-närada uväca

atha çrutvä vidhià natvä

raivato nåpa-sattamaù

äyayau dvärakäà bhüyaù

samåddhaà taà samåddhibhiù

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; atha—then; çrutvä—hearing; vidhim—to Brahmä; natvä—bowing; revataù—Raivata; nåpa—of kings; sattamaù—the best; äyayau—went; dvärakäm—to Dvärtakä; bhüyaù—greatly; samåddham—opulent; tam—that; samåddhibhiù—with opulences.

Çré Närada said: Hearing these words, the great king Raivata bowed down before Lord Brahmä and then quickly went to the supremely opulent city of Dvärakä.

Text 21

päribarhe rathaà dattvä

viçvakarma-vinirmitam

sahasra-haya-samyuktaà

divya-yojana-viståtam

päribarhe—as a wedding present; ratham—a chariot; dattvä—giving; viçvakarma-vinirmitam—made by Viçvakarmä; sahasra—a thousand; haya—horses; samyuktam—with; divya-yojana-viståtam—eight celestial miles long.

As a wedding present he gave a chariot built by Viçvakarmä that was eight celestial miles long and yoked with a thousand horses, . . .

Text 22

divyämbaräni ratnäni

brahma-dattäni maithila

datväyayau tapas taptuà

badary-äkhyaà çubhävaham

divya—splendid; ämbaräni—garments; ratnäni—jewels; brahma-dattäni—given by Brahma; maithila—O king of Mithila; datvä—giving; äyayau—went; tapaù—austerities; taptum—to perform; badary-äkhyam—named Badarikasrama; çubhävaham—the auspicious place.

. . . and he also gave many splendid garments and jewels he had received from Brahmä. After giving these gifts he left to perform austerities at sacred Badarikäçrama.

Text 23

tadä mahotsavaç cäséd

yadu-puryäà gåhe gåhe

saìkarñaëo 'tha bhagavän

revatyä viraräja ha

tadä—then; mahotsavaç—a great festival; ca—and; äsét—was; yadu-puryäm—in the capitol of the Yädavass; gåhe—in home; gåhe—after home; saìkarñaëaù—Lord Balaräma; atha—then; bhagavän—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; revatyä—with Revaté; viraräja—was splendidly manifested; ha—indeed.

Then there was a great festival in the capitol of the Yädavas. In home after home the Supreme Lord Balaräma appeared with Çrématé Revaté.

Text 24

baladeva-vivähasya

kathäà yaù çåëuyän naraù

sarva-päpa-vinirmuktaù

paräà siddhim aväpnuyät

baladeva—of Lord Balaräma; vivähasya—of the wedding; kathäm—the topic; yaù—one who; çåëuyän—hears; naraù—a person; sarva-päpa—all sins; vinirmuktaù—pree; paräm—the supreme; siddhim—perfection; aväpnuyät—attains.

One who hears this story of Lord Balaräma's wedding becomes free of all sins and attains the supreme perfection.
