çré-brahmoväca

kåñëäya megha-vapuñe capalämbaräya

péyüña-miñöa-vacanäya parät paräya

vaàçé-dharäya çikhi-candrikayänvitäya

deväya bhrätå-sahitäya namo 'stu tasmai

çré-brahmä uväca—Çré Brahma said; kåñëäya—to Kåñëa; megha-vapuñe—whose form is a cloud; capalämbaräya—who wears garments of lightning; péyüña—with nectar; miñöa—sweet; vacanäya—words; parät—than ther greatest; paräya—greater; vaàçé-dharäya—holding a flute; çikhi—peacock; candrikayä—feather; anvitäya—with; deväya—to the Lord; bhrätå-sahitäya—accompanied by His brother; namaù—obeisances; astu—maybe; tasmai—to Him.

Çré Brahmä said: Obeisances to Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, greater than the greatest, holding a flute, wearing a peacock feather, staying in His brother's company, His form a monsoon cloud, His garments lightning, and His words sweet as nectar.

Text 2

kåñëas tu säkñät puruñottamaù svayaà

pürëaù pareçaù prakåteù paro hariù

yasyävatäräàça-kalä vayaà suräù

såjäma viçvaà kramato 'sya çaktibhiù

kåñëaù—Kåñëa; tu—indeed; säkñät—directly; puruñottamaù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; svayam—Himself; pürëaù—perfect; pareçaù—the supreme master; prakåteù—of the material energy; paraù—above; hariù—Lord Hari; yasya—of whom; avatära—incarnations; aàça—partrs; kalä—and parts of a part; vayam—we; suräù—demigods; såjäma—create; viçvam—the universe; kramataù—accordingly; asya—of Him; çaktibhiù—with the potencies.

Kåñëa is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, the perfect and complete supreme master, who stays above the material energy. We demigods, who are the parts of the parts of His incarnations, create this world with the aid of His potencies.

Text 3

sa tvaà säkñät kåñëacandrävatäro

nandasyäpi putratäm ägataù kau

våndäraëye gopa-veçena vatsän

gopair mukhyaiç cärayan bhräjase vai

saù—He; tvam—You; säkñät—directly; kåñëacandrävatäraù—the incarnation Lord Kåñëacandra; nandasya—of nanda; api—even; putratäm—in the status og being the son; ägataù—come; kau—to the earth; våndäraëye—in Våndävana; gopa-veçena—in the garments of a gopa; vatsän—the calves; gopaiù—with the gopas; mukhyaiù—most important; cärayan—herding; bhräjase—You are splendidly manifested; vai—certainly.

You are the same Lord Kåñëacandra. You have come to the earth and become the son of Mahäräja Nanda. Appearing like an ordinary cowherd boy, and herding the calves in the company of many gopas, You are splendidly manifest.

Text 4

harià koöi-kandarpa-léläbhirämaà

sphurat-kaustubhaà çyämalaà péta-vastram

vrajeçaà tu vaàçé-dharaà rädhikeçaà

paraà sundaraà taà nikuïje namämi

harim—Lord Hari; koöi—millions; kandarpa—of Kämadevas; lélä—playfulness; abhirämam—handsomeness; sphurat—glittering; kaustubham—Kaustubha jewel; çyämalam—dark; péta-vastram—yellow garments; vrajeçam—the king of Vraja; tu—indeed; vaàçé-dharam—holding a flute; rädhikeçam—the master of Rädhä; param—supreme; sundaraàhandsome; tam—Him; nikuïje—in the forest; namämi—I offer my respectful obeisances.

In this forest grove I offer my respectful obeisances to handsome and dark Lord Hari, more playful and charming than millions of Kämadevas, decorated with yellow garments and glistening Kaustubha gem, clutching a flute, the king of Vraja and the Lord of Çré Rädhä.

Text 5

taà kåñëaà bhaja harim ädi-devam asmin

kñetra-jïaà kham iva vilipta-megham eva

svacchäìgaà param adhi-yajïa-caitya-rüpaà

bhakty-ädyair viçada-viräga-bhäva-saìghaiù

tam—Him; kåñëam— bhaja—worship; harim—Hari; ädi-devam—the original Lord; asmin—here; kñetra—the place; jïam—knowing; kham—the sky; iva—like; vilipta—anointed; megham—clouds; eva—indeed; svaccha—splendid; aìgam—body; param—transcendental; adhi-yajïa-caitya-rüpam—the form of the Lord of sacrifices; bhakty-ädyaiù—beginning weith devotional service; viçada—pure; viräga—renunciation; bhäva—condition; saìghaiù—with multitudes.

With devotion, purity, and renunciation, worship Kåñëa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, pure as a cloudless sky, His limbs splendid, the master of sacrifices, the master of consciousness, the all-knowing Supersoul.

Text 6

yävan manaç ca rajasä prabalena vidvan

saìkalpa eva tu vikalpaka eva tävat

täbhyäà bhaven manasijas tv abhimäna-yogas

tenäpi buddhi-vikåtià kramataù prayänti

yävat—as; manaç—the mind; ca—and; rajasä—with passion; prabalena—powerful; vidvän—wise; saìkalpa—acceptance; eva—indeed; tu—indeed; vikalpaka—rejection; eva—indeed; tävat—so; täbhyäm—with them; bhavet—may be; manasijaù—the desire for sense gratification; tv—indeed; abhimäna—pride; yogaù—contact; tena—by that; api—also; buddhi—of intelligence; vikåtim——ruination; kramataù—gradually; prayänti—attain.

O wise one, when the mind is influenced by passion it accepts the materially pleasant and rejects the materially unpleasant. By these two actions material desires and arrogant pride breed in the heart. In this way the intelligence is gradually disfigured.

Text 7

vidyud-dyutis tv åtu-guëo jala-madhya-rekhä

bhütolmukaù kapaöa-pantha-ratir yathä ca

itthaà tathäsya jagatas tu mukhaà måñeti

duùkhävåtaà viñaya-ghürëam aläta-cakram

vidyut—lightning; dyutiù—splendor; tv—indeed; åtu—of the seasons; guëaù—the quality; jala—water; madhya—middle; rekhä—a line; bhüta—manifested; ulmukaù—firebrand; kapaöa—false; pantha—path; ratiù—making; yathä—as; ca—and; ittham—thus; tathä—so; asya—of this; jagataù—material universe; tu—indeed; mukham—tha face; måñä—false; iti—thus; duùkha—with sufferings; ävåtam—filled; viñaya—sense objects; ghürëam—whirling; aläta-cakram—a firebrand circle.

Like a fleeting lightning flash, a ripple on the water, the passing seasons, and the false, blurred line of a moving spark, the face, filled with sufferings, of the material world is temporary and untrue. The whirl of sense happiness is the seeming-stationary circle of a quickly-moving spark.

Text 8

våkñä jalena calatäpi calä ivätra

netreëa bhüri-calitena caleva bhüç ca

evaà guëaiù prakåti-jair bhramato jana-sthaà

satyaà vaded guëa-sukhäd idam eva kåñëa

våkñäù—trees; jalena—by the water; calatä—moving; api—even; cala—moving; iva—like; atra—here; netreëa—by the eye; bhüri-calitena—moving greatly; cala—moving; iva—like; bhüç—earth; ca—and; evam—thus; guëaiù—by the modes; prakåti-jaiù—born from matter; bhramataù—bewildering; janain the people; stham—situated; satyam—truth; vadet—may speak; guëa—quality; sukhät—out of happiness; idam—this; eva—indeed; kåñëa—O Kåñëa.

When water moves, the trees reflected on it seem to move also. When the eyes are tossed to and fro, the earth seems to move. O Kåñëa, bewildered by the modes of material nature, the people say material sense pleasures are real.

Text 9

duùkhaà sukhaà ca manasä prabhavaà ca supte

mithyä bhavet punar aho bhuvi jägare 'sya

itthaà viveka-ghaöitasya janasya sarvaà

svapna-bhramädåta-jagat satataà bhaved dhi

duùkham—suffering; sukham—pleasure; ca—and; manasä—by the mind; prabhavam—birth; ca—and; supte—in a dream; mithyä—false; bhavet—is; punaù—again; ahaù—Oh; bhuvi—on the earth; jagare—of a person awake; asya—of him; ittham—thus; viveka-ghatitasya—discriminating; janasya—of a person; sarvam—everything; svapna—of a dream; bhrama—illusion; ädåta—honored; jagat—the world; satatam—always; bhavet—is; hi—certainly.

Pains and pleasures are created by the mind. A person awake knows what he saw in a dream is false. A wise man knows the entire material world is a dream.

Text 10

jïäné visåjya mamatäm abhimäna-yogaà

vairägya-bhäva-rasikaù satataà niréhaù

dépena dépa-kaçataà ca yathä prajätaà

paçyet tathätma-vibhavaà bhuvi caika-tattvam

jïäné—a wise man; visåjya—renouncing; mamatäm—possessiveness; abhimäna-yogam—with false-ego; vairägya—renunciation; bhäva—the state; rasikaù—enjoying; satatam—always; niréhaù—without material activities; dépena—with a lamp; dépa—of the lamp; kaçatäm—the light; ca—and; yathä—as; prajätam—masnifested; paçyet—may see; tathä—so; atma—of the self; vibhavam—glory; bhuvi—on the earth; ca—and; eka—one; tattvam—principle.

A wise man who stays aloof from material deeds, renounces the world, and tastes the nectar of spiritual love, can see, as one sees with the light of a lamp, the spiritual glory of the Supreme Lord, who stays as the Supersoul in this world.

Text 11

bhakto bhajed aja-patià hådi väsudevaà

nirdhüma-vahnir iva mukta-guëa-sva-bhävaù

paçyan ghaöeñu sa-jaleñu yathendum ekaà

etädåçaù paramahaàsa-varaù kåtärthaù

bhaktaù—a devotee; bhajet—may worship; aja-patim—the master of Brahmä; hådi—in his heart; väsudevam—Lord Väsudeva; nirdhüma—without smoke; vahniù—fire; iva—like; mukta—freed; guëa—from the modes of nature; sva-bhävaù—whose character; paçyan—seeing; ghateñu—in pots; sa-jaleñu—filled with water; yathä—as; indum—moon; ekam—one; etädåçaù—like that; paramahaàsa-varaù—the best of the swanlike saints; kåtärthaù—who has attained perfection.

A devotee like a smokeless flame free from the touch of the material modes, who worships Lord Väsudeva in his heart and sees the one Lord Väsudeva present in everyone's heart as one moon is reflected in many pots of water, is perfect, the best of swanlike saints.

Text 12

stuvanti vedäù satataà ca yaà sadä

harer mahimnaù kila ñoòaçéà kaläm

kadäpi jänanti na te tri-loke

vaktuà guëäàç tasya jano 'sti kaù paraù

stuvanti—offer prayers; vedäù—the Vedas; satatam—always; ca—and; yam—to whom; sadä—always; hareù—of Lord Hari; mahimnaù—of the glory; kila—indeed; ñoòaçém—sixteenth; kaläm—part; kadäpi—sometimes; jänanti—know; na—not; te—of You; tri-loke—in the three woirlds; vaktum—to say; guëän—the qualities; tasya—of Him; janaù—a person; asti—so; kaù—who?; paraù—is able.

Athough they always praise Him, the Vedas do not understand even one sixteenth of Lord Hari's glories. Who in the three worlds has the power to describe His qualities?

Text 13

vaktaiç caturbhis tv aham eva devaù

çré-païcavaktraù kila païca-vaktraiù

sahasraçérñas tu sahasra-vaktrair

yaà stauti seväà kurute ca tasya

vaktaiù—with mouths; caturbhiù—four; tv—indeed; aham—I; eva—indeed; devaù—the lord; çré-païcavaktraù—Çiva; kila—indeed; païca—with five; vaktraiù—mouths; sahasraçérñaù—Ananta; tu—indeed; sahasra—with a thousand; vaktraiù—mouths; yam—whom; stauti—praise; seväm—service; kurute—do; ca—and; tasya—of Him.

Ananta praises Him with a thousand mouths, Çiva with five mouths and I with four mouths. We serve Lord Hari.

Text 14

viñëuç ca vaikuëöha-niväsa-kåc ca

kñéroda-väsé harir eva säkñät

näräyaëo dharma-sutas tathäpi

goloka-näthaà bhajate bhavantam

viñëuù—Lord Viñëu; ca—and; vaikuëöha-niväsa-kåc—who resides in Vaikuëöha; ca—and; kñéroda-väsé—residing on the milk-ocean; hariù—Lord Hari; eva—indeed; säkñät—directly; näräyaëaù—Näräyaëa; dharma-sutaù—the son of Dharma; tathäpi—still; goloka-nätham—the Lord of Goloka; bhajate—wprships; bhavantam—You.

Lord Viñëu who stays in Vaikuëöha, Lord Hari who stays on the milk-ocean, and Näräyaëa Åñi, the son of Dharma, all worship You, the master of Goloka.

Text 15

aho 'ti-dhanyo mahimä murärer

jänanti bhümau munayo na mänaväù

suräsurä vä manavo budhäù punaù

svapne 'pi paçyanti na tat-pada-dvayam

ahaù—Oh; ati—very; dhanyaù—opulent; mahimä—glory; muräreù—of Kåñëa; jänanti—know; bhümau—on the earth; munayaù—sages; na—not; mänaväù—humans; sura—demigods; asuräù—demons; vä—or; manavaù—Manus; budhäù—philosophers; punaù—again; svapne—in dream; api—even; paçyanti—see; na—not; tat-pada-dvayam—His feet.

Lord Kåñëa's glories are very great. Even in their dreams the sages, humans, demigods, demons, manus, and philosophers do not see His feet.

Text 16

varaà harià guëäkäraà

su-mukti-daà parät param

rameçvaraà guëeçvaraà

vrajeçvaraà namämy aham

varam—great; harim—Lord Hari; guëäkäram—a jewel mine of virtues; su-mukti-dam—granting liberation; parät—than the greatest; param—greater; ramä—of the goddess of fortune; éçvaram—the master; guëa—of transcendental virtues; éçvaraàthe master; vraja—of Vraja; éçvaram—to the master; namämy—offer obeisances; aham—I.

I offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Hari, greater than the greatest, a jewel mine of transcendental virtues, the giver of liberation, the master of the goddess of fortune, the master of transcendental virtues, and the master of Vraja.

tämbüla-sundara-mukhaà madhuraà bruvantaà

bimbädharaà smita-yutaà sita-kunda-dantam

nélälakävåta-kapola-manoharäbhaà

vande calat-kanaka-kuëòala-maëòanärham

tämbüla—with betelnuts; sundara—handsome; mukham—face; madhuram—sweet; bruvantam—speaking; bimbädharam—bimba-fruit lips; smita—a smile; yutam—with; sita—white; kunda—jasmine; dantam—teeth; néla—black; älaka—curling locks of hair; ävåta—covered; kapola—cheeks; manohara—charming; äbham—glory; vande—I offer my respectful obeisances; calat—moving; kanaka—gold; kuëòala—earrings; maëòana-arham—decorated.

I offer my respectful obeisances to smiling, sweetly speaking Lord Hari, His mouth handsome with betelnuts, His lips bimba fruits, His teeth white jasmine flowers, and His handsome cheeks covered by curly black locks and decorated with swinging gold earrings.

sundaraà tu tava rüpam eva hi

manmathasya manaso haraà param

ävirästu mama netrayoù sadä

çyämalaà makara-kuëòalävåtam

sundaram—handsome; tu—indeed; tava—Your; rüpam—form; eva—indeed; hi—indeed; manmathasya—of Kämadrva; manasaù—the heart; haram—enchanting; param—great; ävirastu—may appear; mama—of me; netrayoù—on the eyes; sadä—always; çyämalam—dark; makara-kuëòalävåtam—with shark-shaped earrings.

May Your dark handsome form, decorated with shark-shaped earrings and stealing Kämadeva's heart, appear before my eyes.

Text 19

vaikuëöha-lélä-pravaraà manoharaà

namas-kåtaà deva-gaëaiù paraà varam

gopäla-léläbhiyutaà bhajämy ahaà

goloka-näthaà çirasä namämy aham

vaikuëöha—in Vaikunööha; lélä—pastimes; pravaram—excellent; manoharam—charming; namas-kåtam—offered obeisances; deva-gaëaiù—by the demigods; param—supreme; varam—great; gopäla-léläbhiyutam—enjoying pastimes as a gopa; bhajämy—worship; aham—I; goloka-nätham—the master of Goloka; çirasä—with the head; namämy—bow down; aham—I.

I bow my head before Goloka's handsome king, who plays as a gopa, enjoys in Vaikuëöha, and receives the demigods' obeisances.

Text 20

yuktaà vasanta-kalakaëöha-vihaìgamaiç ca

saugandhikaà tvaraëa-pallava-çäkhi-saìgam

våndävanaà sudhita-dhéra-saméra-léläà

gacchan harir jayati pätu sadaiva bhaktän

yuktam—endowed; vasanta—spring; kalakaëöha—cuckoo; vihaìgamaiù—birds; ca—and; saugandhikam—fragrant; tvaraëa—quick; pallava—buds; çäkhi—trees; saìgam—company; våndävanam—Våndävana; sudhita-dhéra-saméra-léläm—with playful nectar breezes; gacchan—going; hariù—Lord Hari; jayati—all glories; pätu—may protect; sadä—always; eva—certainly; bhaktän—the devotees.

Glory to Lord Hari, who walks in fragrant Våndävana forest, which is filled with sweet-throated spring cuckoos, newly-budding trees, and gentle, playful, nectar breezes. May He always protect the devotees.

Text 21

harati kamala-mänaà lola-muktäbhimänaà

dharaëi-rasika-dänaà kämadevasya bäëam

çravaëa-vidita-yänaà netra-yugma-prayänaà

bhaja yad uta samakñaà däna-dakñaà kaöäkñam

harati—removes; kamala—of the lotus; mänam—the pride; lola—moving; muktä—pearl; abhimänam—pride; dharaëi—on the earth; rasika—they who taste nectar; dänam—gift; kämadevasya—of Kämadeva; bäëam—the arrow; çravaëa—to the ears; vidita—known; yänam—journey; netra-yugma—eyes; prayänam—journey; bhaja—worship; yat—whcih; uta—indeed; samakñam—before the eyes; däna-dakñam—expert atgiving charity; kaöäkñam—the sidelong glance.

Worship Kåñëa's sidelong glance, which eclipses the pride of the lotus and the moving string of pearls, which travels almost to His ears, which is Kämadeva's arrow, and which, laden with gifts for they who taste nectar in this world, is expert at giving charity.

çarac-candräkäraà nakha-maëi-samühaà sukha-karaà

su-raktaà håt-pürëaà prakaöita-tamaù-khaëòana-karam

bhaje 'haà brahmäëòe sakala-nara-päpäbhidalanaà

harer viñëor devair divi bharata-khaëòe stutam alam

çarat—autumn; candra—moon; äkäram—form; nakha—nails; maëi—jewels; samüham—multitude; sukha-karam—delighting; su-raktam—red; håt—chest; pürëam—full; prakaöita—manifested; tamaù—darkness; khaëòana-karam—breaking; bhaje—worship; aham—I; brahmäëòe—in the universe; sakala—all; nara—people; päpa—sins; abhidalanam—destruction; hareù—of Lord Hari; viñëoù—of Lord Viñëu; devaiù—by the the demigods; divi—in heaven; bharata-khaëòe—on the earth; stutam—praised; alam—greatly.

I worship handsome Lord Viñëu's delightful reddish jewel nails, which fill the heart, break the darkness, crush the sins of everyone in the universe, and are praised on the earth and by the demigods in heaven.

Text 23

mahä-padme kià vä paridhir iva cäbhäti satataà

kadäcid ity asphurjad-ratha-caraëa itthaà dhvani-dharaù

yathä nyastaà cakraà çata-kiraëa-yuktaà tu hariëä

sphurac-chré-maïjéraà hari-caraëa-padme tv adhigatam

mahä-padme—a great lotus; kim—whether?; vä—or; paridhiù—a circle of light; iva—like; ca—and; äbhäti—shines; satatam—always; kadäcit—sometimes; ity—thus; asphurjad-ratha-caraëaù—asm chariot wheel; ittham—thus; dhvani-dharaù—making sounds; yathä—as; nyastam—placed; cakram—cakra; çata-kiraëa-yuktam—with a hundred points of light; tu—indeed; hariëä—by Lord Hari; sphura—manifest; çré-maïjéram—ankles; hari-caraëa-padme—on Lord Hari's lotus feet; tv—indeed; adhigatam—understood.

Is this a circle of light around a great lotus flower, a great rumbling chariot wheel, the Sudarçana-cakra, the sun with its hundred points of light, or the graceful anklets on Lord Hari's lotus feet?

Text 24

kaöyäà pétämbaraà divyaà

kñudra-ghaëöikayänvitam

bhajämy ahaà citta-haraà

kåñëasyäkliñöa-karmaëaù

kaöyäm—on the hips; pétämbaram—yellow garments; divyam—splendid; kñudra-ghaëöikayänvitam—decorated with small bells; bhajämy—worship; aham—I; citta-haram—charming; kåñëasya—of Kåñëa; akliñöa-karmaëaù—whose actions are full of bliss.

I worship the splendid, charming, decorated with small bells yellow garment on the hips of Lord Kåñëa, whose every act is full of bliss.

Text 25

bhaje kåñëa-kroòe bhågu-muni-padaà çré-gåham alaà

tathä çrévatsäìkaà nikaça-ruci-yuktaà dyuti-param

gale hérähärän kanaka-maëi-muktävali-dharän

sphurat-täräkärän bhramara-vali-bhärän dhvani-karän

bhaje—I worship; kåñëa-kroòe—on Kåñëa's chest; bhågu-muni-padam—the footprint of Bhågu Muni; çré-gåham—the homr of the goddess of fortune; alam—greatky; tathä—then; çrévatsäìkam—marked with Çrévatsa; nikaça-ruci-yuktam—with a gluttering golden streak; dyuti-param—splendid; gale—on the neck; hérähärän—diamon necklaces; kanaka—gold; maëi—jewels; muktävali—pearls; dharän—wearing; sphurat-täräkärän—glittering stars; bhramara—bees; vali-bhärän—manifesting; dhvani-karän—making a sound.

On Lord Kåñëa's chest I worship Bhågu Muni's footprint, Lakñmé-devi's home, the mark of Çrévatsa, the splendid golden nikaña line, and, suspended from His neck, the many necklaces of diamonds, gold, jewels, and pearls splendid as glistening stars, and the many flower garlands filled with buzzing bees.

vaàçé-vibhüñitam alaà dvija-däna-çélaà

sindüra-varëam ati-kécakaräva-léläm

hemäìguléya-nikaraà nakha-candra-yuktaà

hasta-dvayaà smara kadamba-sugandha-påktam

vaàçé—with a flute; vibhüñitam—decorated; alam—greatly; dvija-däna-çélam—giving charity to the brahmanas; sindüra-varëam—the color of red sindura; ati-kécakaräva-léläm—the playful soundof the bamboos; hemäìguléya-nikaram—golden rings; nakha-candra-yuktam—with the moons of the nails; hasta-dvayam—two ahnds; smara—remember; kadamba-sugandha-påktam—with the scent of a kadamba flower.

Remember Kåñëa's hands, decorated with a flute, expert at giving charity to the brähmaëas, the color of sindüra, expert at playing the bamboo flute, with gold rings and moonlike fingernails, and fragrant with a kadamba flower.

Text 27

çanaiç calan mänasa-räja-haàsa-

gréväkåtau kandhara ucca-deçe

kädambiné-mäna-harau karau ca

bhajämi nityaà hari-käka-pakñau

çanaiù—gradually; calan—going; mänasa—of the mind; räja-haàsa—the royal swan; gréväkåtau—in the form of a neck; kandhara—neck; ucca-deçe—broad; kädambiné—of monsoon clouds; mäna—the pride; harau—removing; karau—hands; ca—and; bhajämi—I worship; nityam—always; hari—of Lord Hari; käka—crow; pakñau—feathers.

On the slowly-moving swan of Lord Hari's neck again and again I worship two black crow-feathers, which remove the pride of the black monsoon clouds.

Text 28

kala-darpaëa-vad viçadaà sukha-daà

nava-yauvana-rüpa-dharaà nåpatim

maëi-kuëòala-kuntala-çäli-ratià

bhaja gaëòa-yugaà ravi-candra-rucim

kala-darpaëa-vat—like a splendid mirror; viçadam—clear; sukha-dam—delightful; nava-yauvana-rüpa-dharam—newly youthful; nåpatim—king; maëi—jewel; kuëòala—earrings; kuntala-çäli—locks of heari; ratim—delight; bhaja—worship; ganda-yugam—cheeks; ravi-candra-rucim—splendid as the sun and moon.

Please worship the delightful young prince splendid as a glistening mirror, handsome with jewel earrings and curly locks of hair, and glorious as the sun and moon, that is Lord Hari's cheeks.

khacita—studded; kanaka—gold; muktä—pearls; rakta—red; vaidürya—vaidurya jewels; väsam—the abode; madana—of Kämadeva; vadana—face; lélä—pastimes; sarva—all; saundarya—handsomeness; räsam—the räsa dance; aruëa—red; vidhu—moon; sakäçam——shining; koöi—millions; sürya—suns; prakäçam—shining; ghaöita-çikhi-su-vétam—with a peacock feather; naumi—I glorify; viñëoù—of Lord Viñëu; kiréöam—the crown.

I praise Lord Viñëu's crown, deocrated with a peacock feather, glorious as a red moon, splendid as millions of suns, the home of gold, pearls, and vaidürya jewels, and the räsa circle of all of Kämadeva's playful handsomeness.

yad-dväri—at the door; deçe—in the place; na—not; gatiù—going; guha—Kärttikeya; indra—Indra; gaëeça—Gaëeça; täreça—Candra; diväkaräëäm—and Sürya; äjïäm—the order; vinä—without; yänti—go; na—not; kuïja-maëòalam—to the forest; tam—Him; kåñëacandram—Kåñëacandra; jagad-éçvaram—the master of the universes; bhaje—I worship.

I worship Kåñëacandra, the master of the universes. Kärttikeya, Indra, Gaëeça, Candra, and Sürya cannot enter the door to His realm. Without His permission no one can enter the circle of His forest.

O Lord of the universe, I was born from the lotus of Your navel. As a mother forgives her son's offense, please forgive me.

What am I, the king of one planet, in comparison to You, the ruler of many millions of universes? O master of Vraja, O Lord, O Kåñëa, please save me!

sva-mäyayä tan-mohayä

mürkho 'haà hy udyato 'bhavam

mäyayä—by the illusory potency; yasya—of whom; muhyanti—bewidlered; deva—demigods; daitya—demons; nara—humans; ädayaù—beginning with; sva-mäyayä—by His own illusory potency; tan-mohayä—bewildering; mürkhaù—bewildered; aham—I; hy—indeed; udyataù—engaged; abhavam—have become.

By Your illusory potency the demigods, demons, humans, and other living entities are bewildered. Bewildered by Your illusory potency, I diligently perform my duties.

näräyaëas tvaà govinda

nähaà näräyaëo hare

brahmäëòaà tvaà vinirmäya

çeñe näräyaëaù purä

näräyaëaù—Näräyaëa; tvam—You; govinda—O Govinda; na—not; aham—I; näräyaëaù—Näräyaëa; hare—O Hari; brahmäëòam—a universe; tvam—You; vinirmäya—creating; çeñe—on Çeña; näräyaëaù—Näräyaëa. purä—in ancient times.

O Govinda, O Hari, You are Näräyaëa. I am not Näräyaëa. You are the same Näräyaëa that in ancient times created the universe and then rested on Ananta Çeña.

yasya çré-brahmaëi dhämni

präëaà tyaktvä tu yoginaù

yatra yäsyanti tasmiàs tu

sa-kulä putanä gatä

yasya—of whom; çré-brahmaëi—in Brahman; dhämni—in the abode; präëam—life; tyaktvä—abandoning; tu—indeed; yoginaù—yogis; yatra—where; yäsyanti—will go; tasmiàù—in that; tu—indeed; sa-kulä—with their families; putanä—Pütanä; gatä—went.

Pui_tanä and her family entered the same Brahman effulgence the yogés attain when they leave this life.

vatsänäà vatsapänäà ca

kåtvä rüpäëi mädhava

vicacära vane tvaà tu

hy aparädhän mama prabho

vatsänäm—of the calves; vatsapänäm—and gopas; ca—and; kåtvä—making; rüpäëi—forms; mädhava—O Kåñëa; vicacära—wander; vane—in the forest; tvam—You; tu—indeed; hy—indeed; aparädhän—offenses; mama—my; prabhaù—O Lord.

O Mädhava, after creating the forms of the calves and gopas, You wandered in the forest. O Lord, please forgive my offenses.

tasmät kñamasva govinda

praséda tvaà mamopari

agaëayyäparädhäà me

sutopari pitä yathä

tasmät—therefore; kñamasva—please forgive; govinda—O Govinda; praséda—be merciful; tvam—You; mama upari—to me; agaëayya—not counting; aparädham—the offense; me—of me; suta upari—to a son; pitä—a father; yathä—as.

O Govinda, please forgive me. Please be merciful to me. As a father does not consider his son's actions an offense, please do not take offense with me.

Text 39

tvad-abhaktä ratä jïäne

teñäà kleço viçiñyate

pariçramät karñakänäà

yathä kñetre tuñärthinäm

tvad-abhaktäù—they who are not Your devotees; ratä—engaged; jïäne—in impersonal speculation; teñäm—of them; kleçaù—suffering; viçiñyate—is; pariçramät—out of fatigue; karñakänäm—of farmers; yathä—as; kñetre—in the firld; tuñärthinäm—threshing chaff.

They who are not devoted to You but instead are earnestly engaged in impersonal speculation gain only trouble for all their efforts. They are like a farmers that thresh empty husks.

tvad-bhakti-bhäve niratä

bahavas tvad-gatià gatäù

yogino munayaç caiva

tathä ye vraja-väsinaù

tvad-bhakti-bhäve—in devotion to YTou; niratä—engaged; bahavaù—many; tvad-gatim—the destination of You; gataù—attained; yoginaù—yogis; munayaù—sages; ca—and; eva—indeed; tathä—so; ye—who; vraja—of Vraja; väsinaù—the residents.

As many yogés and sages became devoted to You and attained You, so the residents of Vraja also became devoted to You and attained You.

Text 41

dvidhä ratir bhaved varä

çrutäc ca darçanäc ca vä

aho hare tu mäyayä

babhüva naiva me ratiù

dvidhä—two kinds; ratiù—love; bhavet—is; varä—excellent; çrutät—from hearing; ca—and; darçanät—from seeing; ca—and; vai—indeed; ahaù—Oh; hare—Lord Hari; tu—indeed; mäyayä—by the illusory potency; babhüva—became; na—not; eva—indeed; me—of me; ratiù—love.

Love is created in two ways: by hearing and by seeing. O Lord Hari, bewildered by Your illusory potency, I have not attained love for You.

Text 42

ity uktväçru-mukho bhütvä

natvä tat-päda-paìkajau

punar äha vidhiù kåñëaà

bhaktyä sarvaà kñamäpayan

ity—thus; uktvä—speaking; açru—tears; mukhaù—on his face; bhütvä—becoming; natvä—bowing down; tat-päda-paìkajau—to His lotus feet; punaù—again; äha—spoke; vidhiù—Brahmä; kåñëam—to Kåñëa; bhaktyä—with devotion; sarvam—all; kñamäpayan—appealing for forgiveness.

Speaking these words, bowing before Kåñëa's lotus feet, and tears gliding down his face, Brahmä earnestly begged for forgiveness.

Text 43

ghoñeñu väsinäm eñäà

bhütvähaà tvat-padämbujam

yadä bhajeyaà su-gatis

tadä bhüyän na cänyathä

ghoñeñu—in the cowherd villages; väsinäm—of the residents; eñäm—of them; bhütvä—becoming; aham—I; tvat-padämbujam—Your lotus feet; yadä—when; bhajeyam—I worship; su-gatiù—an auspicious condition; tadä—then; bhüyän—will be; na—not; ca—and; anyathä—otherwise.

When I take birth among the residents of these cowherd villages, and when I worship Your lotus feet, then I will attain auspiciousness. Nothing else will be auspicious for me.

vayaà tu gopa-deçeñu

saàsthitäç ca çivädayaù

sakåt kåñëaà tu paçyantas

tasmäd dhanyäç ca bhärate

vayam—we; tu—indeed; gopa-deçeñu—in the places of the gopas; saàsthitäç—situated; ca—and; çivädayaù—headed by Lord Çiva; sakåt—once; kåñëam—Kåñëa; tu—indeed; paçyantaù—seeing; tasmät—from that; dhanyäç—fortunate; ca—and; bhärate—on the earth.

When we demigods, who have Çiva as our leader, enter the lands of the gopas and once gaze on Lord Kåñëa, then we will be fortunate.

aho bhägyaà tu çré-kåñëa

mätä-pitros tava prabho

tathä ca gopa-gopénäà

pürëas tvaà dåçyate vraje

ahaù—Oh; bhägyam—good fortune; tu—indeed; çré-kåñëa—O Çré Kåñëa; mätä-pitroù—of the mother and father; tava—of You; prabhaù—O Lord; tathä—so; ca—and; gopa-gopénäm—of the gopas and gopés; pürëaù—perfect; tvam—You; dåçyate—are seen; vraje—in Vraja.

O Lord, how fortunate are Your parents, the gopas, and the gopés, who see You in Your original form in Vraja!

muktä-häraù sarva-viçvopakaraù

sarvädhäraù pätu mäà viçva-käraù

lélägäraù çüri-kanyä-vihäraù

kréòäpäraù kåñëacandrävatäraù

muktä—of pearls; häraù—with a necklace; sarva-viçvopakaraù—the maintainer of all the universes; sarvädhäraù—the resting place of everything; pätu—may protect; mäm—me; viçva-käraù—the creator of the universes; lélägäraù—the abode of transcendental pastimnes; çüri-kanyä—by the Yamunä; vihäraù—who enjoys pastimes; kréòäpäraù—playful; kåñëacandrävatäraù—the descent of Lord Kåñëa.

May Lord Kåñëa, who wears a pearl necklace, in whom everything rests, who creates and maintains all the universes, and who, enjoying by the Yamunä, is the playful abode of transcendental pastimes, protect me.

çré-kåñëa våñëi-kula-puñkara nanda-putra

rädhä-pate madana-mohana deva-deva

sammohitaà vraja-pate bhuvi te 'jäya mäà

O Çré Kåñëa, O lotus growing in King Våñëi's family, O son of Nanda, O Lord of Rädhä, O enchanter of Kämadeva, O master of the demigods, O king of Vraja, O king of Gokula, O Govinda, please protect, please protect me, who am now bewildered by Your illusory potency!

karoti yaù kåñëa-hareù pradakñiëaà

bhavej jagat-tértha-phalaà ca tasya tu

te kåñëalokaà sukhadaà parät paraà

goloka-lokaà pravaraà gamiñyati

karoti—does; yaù—one who; kåñëa-hareù—of Lord Kåñëa; pradakñiëam—circumambulation; bhavet— may be; jagat—of the universe; tértha—the holy places; phalam—the result; ca—and; tasya—of him; tu—indeed; te—of You; kåñëalokam—Kåñëaloka; sukhadam—blissful; parät—than the greatest; param—greater; goloka—of Goloka; lokam—the realm; pravaram—best; gamiñyati—will go.

A person who circumambulates Lord Kåñëa attains the result of visiting all the holy places in the universe. He will go to Your Kåñëaloka, the best of spiritual realms.

çré-närada uväca

ity abhiñöüya govindaà

çrémad-våndävaneçvaram

natvä tri-väraà lokeças

cakära tu pradakñiëam

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; ity—thus; abhiñöüya—offering prayers; govindam—to Govinda; çrémat—glorious; våndävana—of Våndävana; éçvaram—to the master; natvä—bowing down; tri-varam—three times; lokeçaù—Brahmä, the king of the worlds; cakära—did; tu—indeed; pradakñiëam—circumambulation.

Çré Närada said: After offering these prayers and bowing down, three times Brahmä circumambulated Lord Govinda, the glorious master of Våndävana.

tatra cälakñito bhütvä

vatsän bälän pitämahaù

varaà dattvä prayänärthaà

yacanaà sa cakära ha

tatra—there; ca—and; alakñitaù—invisible; bhütvä—becopming; vatsän—the calves; bälän—and boys; pitämahaù—Brahmä; varam—benediction; dattvä—giving; prayäna—departure; artham—for the purpose; yacanam—request; sa—he; cakära—did; ha—indeed.

First becoming invisible, and then offerings blessing to the calves and boys, grandfather Brahmä asked permission to leave.

Text 51

tataç ca brahmaëe tasmai

netreëäjïäà dadau hariù

punaù praëamya svaà lokaà

ätma-bhüù pratyapadyata

tataù—then; ca—and; brahmaëe—to Brahmä; tasmai—to him; netreëa—with an eye; äj 24äm—permission; dadau—givinmg; hariù—Lord Hari; punaù—again; praëamya—bowing down; svam—to his own; lokam—planet; ätma-bhüù—Brahmä; pratyapadyata—went.

With a glance Kåñëa gave His permission. Then Brahmä bowed again and returned to his own world.

atha kåñëo vanäc chéghraà

änayäm äsa vatsakän

yaträpi puline räjan

gopänäà räja-maëòalé

atha—then; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; vanät—from the forest; çéghram—quickly; änayäm äsa—led; vatsakän—the calves; yatra—where; api—also; puline—on the shore; räjan—O king; gopänäm—of the gopas; räja-maëòalé—in a royal circle.

O king, then Kåñëa quickly led the calves from the forest to the Yamunä's shore, where Kåñëa was in the midst of a glorious circle of gopas.

gopärbhakäç ca çré-kåñëaà

vatsaiù särdhaà samägatam

kñaëärdhaà menire vékñya

kåñëa-mäyä-vimohitäù

gopa—gopa; arbhakäù—boys; ca—and; çré-kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; vatsaiù—with the calves; särdham—with; samägatam—come; kñaëa—a moment; ardham—half; menire—considered; vékñya—seeing; kåñëa-mäyä-vimohitäù—bewildered by Kåñëa's illusory potency.

Bewildered by Kåñëa's yogamäyä potency, when they saw Kåñëa with the calves, the gopa boys thought He had been gone for only half a moment.

ta ücur vatsakaiù kåñëa

tvaraà tvaà tu samägataù

kuruñva bhojanaà cätra

kenäpi na kåtaà prabho

te—they; ücuù—said; vatsakaiù—with the calves; kåñëa—O Kåñëa; tvaram—quickly; tvam—You; tu—indeed; samägataù—come; kuruñva—please do; bhojanam—lunch; ca—and; atra—here; kenäpi—somehow; na—not; kåtam—done; prabhaù—O Lord.

They said: O Kåñëa, You have come so quickly with the calves! O Lord, come and take lunch. Somehow we have not finished our lunch.

tataç ca vihasan kåñëo

'bhyavahåtyärbhakaiù saha

darçayäm äsa sarvebhyas

carmäjagaram eva ca

tataù—then; ca—and; vihasan—laughing; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; abhyavahåtya—taking lunch; arbhakaiù saha—wityh the boys; darçayäm äsa—showed; sarvebhyaù—to all; carma—the skin; äjagaram—of the snake; eva—indeed; ca—also.

Laughing, Kåñëa took lunch with the boys. Then He showed them the skin of the dead snake Aghäsura.

Text 56

säyam-käle sa-rämas tu

kåñëo gopaiù parävåtaù

agre kåtvä vatsa-våndaà

hy äjagäma çanair vrajam

säyam-käle—in the evening; sa-rämaù—with Balaräma; tu—indeed; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; gopaiù—by the goppas; parävåtaù—accompanied; agre—in the front; kåtvä—placing; vatsa-våndam—the calves; hy—indeed; äjagäma—returned; çanaiù—slowly; vrajam—to Vraja.

Then Kåñëa, placing the calves in front and accompanied by Balaräma and the gopas, slowly returned to the village of Vraja in the evening.

go-vatsakaiù sita-sitäsita-péta-varëai

raktädi-dhümra-haritair bahu-çéla-rüpaiù

gopäla-maëòala-gataà vraja-päla-putraà

vande vanät sukhada-goñöhakam ävrajantam

go-vatsakaiù—with the calves; sita—white; sitäsita—black; péta—yellow; varëaiù—with colors; rakta—red; ädi—beginning; dhümra—smokey; haritaiù—green; bahu-çéla-rüpaiù—with many different forms and natures; gopäla-maëòala-gatam—gone to the circle of gopas; vraja-päla—of the king of Vraja; putram—to the son; vande—I bow down; vanät—from the forest; sukhada—blissful; goñöhakam—to the gopa village; ävrajantam—returning.

As, encircled by gopas and by calves of many different forms and natures and of many colors beginning with white, black, yellow, red, green, and smokey, He returns from the forest to the blissful village of gopas, I bow down before Lord Kåñëa, the prince of Vraja.

änando gopikänäà tu

hy äsét kåñëasya darçane

yäsäà yena vinä räjan

kñaëo yuga-samo 'bhavat

änandaù—the bliss; gopikänäm—of thr gopés; tu—indeed; hy—indeed; äsét—was; kåñëasya—of Lord Kåñëa; darçane—in the sight; yäsäm—of wehom; yena—by which; vinä—without; räjan—O king; kñaëaù—a moment; yuga-samaù—equal to a yuga; abhavat—became.

When they saw Kåñëa, the gopés became filled with bliss. O king, for them a moment's separation from Him seemed like a yuga.

Text 59

kåtvä goñöhe påthag vatsän

bäläù svaà svaà gåhän gatäù

jaguç cäghäsura-vädhaà

ätmano rakñaëaà hareù

kåtvä—doing; goñöhe—in Vraja; påthag—specific; vatsän—calves; bäläù—boys; svaà svam—each their own; gåhän—home; gatäù—went; jaguù—sang; ca—nd; aghäsura—of Aghäsura; vädham—the slaying; ätmanaù—of themselves; rakñaëaàthe protection; hareù—of Lord Hari.

After placing the calves in their barns, the boys went to their own homes. There they told how Kåñëa killed Aghäsura and saved them.
