Chapter Fifteen

Barhiñmaté-pur-aìghry-apsaraù-sutala-väsiné-nägendra-

kanyopäkhyäna

The Story of the Women of Barhiñmaté-pura, the Apsaräs, and the

Women of Sutala and Nägendra

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

vraje çoëapurädhiço

gopo nando dhané mahän

bhäryäù païca sahasräëi

babhüvus tasya maithila

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; vraje—in Vraja; çoëapurädhiçaù—the king of Sonapura; gopaù—a gopa;

nandaù—Nanda; dhané—wealthy; mahän—exalted;

bhäryäù—wives; païca sahasräëi—five thousand;

babhüvuù—were; tasya—of him; maithila—O king of

Mithilä.

Çré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, in Vraja lived a

righteous and wealthy gopa named Nanda, who had been the king of

Çoëapura. He had five thousand wives.

Text 2

jätä matsya-varät täs tu

samudre gopa-kanyakäù

tathänyäç ca viciträù

påthivyä dohanän nåpa

jätä—born; matsya-varät—by the blessings of Lord

Matsya; täù—they; tu—indeed; samudre—in the

ocean; gopa-kanyakäù—gopés; tathä—so;

anyäù—others; ca—and; viciträùvarious plants;

api—also; påthivyä—of the earth; dohanät—from the

milking; nåpa—O king.

He had many daughters. Some had previously been born from

the milk-ocean and had been the goddess of fortune's friends, and

now were born as gopés by Lord Matsya's benediction, and others

had been the plants the sprouted when the earth was milked.

Text 3

barhiñmaté-pur-andhryo yä

jätä jäti-smaräù paräù

tathänyäpsaraso 'bhüvan

varän näräyaëasya ca

barhiñmaté-pur-andhryaù—the girls of Bharismati-pura;

yä—who; jätä—born; jäti-smaräù—remembering their

previous birth; paräù—others; tathä—so;

anyä—others; apsarasaù—apsaras; abhüvan—becasme; varän—by the benediction; näräyaëasya—of Lord

Näräyaëa; ca—and.

Some had been the women of Barhiñmaté-pura. They remembered

their previous birth. Others had been apsaräs and became gopé by

the blessings of Näräyaëa Åñi

Text 4

tathä sutala-väsinyo

vämanasya varät striyaù

tathä nägendra-kanyäç ca

jätäù çeña-varät parät

tathä—so; sutala-väsinyaù—the residents of Sutala; vämanasya—of Lord Vämana; varät—by the blessing;

striyaù—women; tathä—so; nägendra—of the serpent-

king; kanyäù—the daughters; ca—and;

jätäù—born; çeña-varät—by the blessing of Lord Çeña;

parät—great.

Some had been the women of Sutalaloka and became gopés by

the blessings of Lord Vämana. Others had been the daughters of

the king of the Nägas and they became gopés by the spiritual

blessings of Lord Çeña.

Text 5

täbhyo durväsasä dattaà

kåñëä-païcäìgam adbhutam

tena sampüjya yamunäà

vavrire çrépatià varam

täbhyaù—to them; durväsasä—by Durvasa Muni;

dattam—given; kåñëa-païcäìgam—five ways to worship

Lord Kåñëa; adbhutam—wonderful; tena—by that;

sampüjya—worshiping; yamunäm—the Yamunä;

vavrire—attained; çrépatim—Kåñëa; varam—as their

husband.

Durväsä Muni gave them the wonderful kåñëä-païcäìga

method of worship. Following it, they worshiped the Yamunä and

attained Lord Kåñëa as their husband.

ekadä çré-haris täbhir

våndäraëye manohare

yamunä-nikaöe divye

puàs-kokila-taru-vraje

madhupa-dhvani-samyukte

küjat-kokila-särase

madhu-mäse manda-väyau

vasanta-latikävåte

dolotsavaà samärebhe

harir madana-mohanaù

kadamba-vrkñe rahasi

kalpa-vrkñe manohare

ekadä—once; çré-hariù—Çré Kåñëa; täbhiù—with

them; våndäraëye—in Våndävana forest;

manohare—beautiful; yamunä-nikaöe—by the Yamunä shore; divye—splendid; puàs-kokila-taru-vraje—among trees filled

with cuckoos; madhupa-dhvani-samyukte—filled with the

humming of bees; küjat—warbling; kokila—cuckoos; särase—and cranes; madhu-mäse—in the month of Madhu; manda-väyau—with a gentle breeze; vasanta-

latikävåte—filled with madhavi vines; dola—swing;

utsavaàfestival; samärebhe—did; hariù—Kåñëa;

madana-mohanaù—more charming than Kämadeva; kadamba-vrkñe—in

a kadamba tree; rahasi—in a secluded place; kalpa-

vrkñe—in a desire tree; manohare—beautiful.

Once, during the month of Caitra (March-April), Lord Kåñëa,

who is more charming than Kämadeva, enjoyed a swing festival with

these gopés in a kadamba kalpa-våkña tree in a beautiful and

secluded place in beautiful Våndävana forest, a place filled with

trees and mädhavé vines, buzzing bees, cooing cuckoos and cranes,

and a gentle breeze from the nearby Yamunä.

Text 9

kälindé-jala-kallola-

kolähala-samäkule

tad-dola-khelanaà cakrus

tä gopyaù prema-vihvaläù

kälindé—of the Yamunä; jala—water;

kallola—waves; kolähala—uproar; samäkule—filled; tad-dola-khelanam—swinging pastime; cakruù—did;

tä—they; gopyaù—gopés; prema-vihvaläù—filled with

love.

As the Yamunä was filled with waves, these gopés, deeply in

love with Kåñëa, enjoyed pastimes on a swing.

Text 10

rädhayä kérti-sutayä

candra-koöi-prakäçayä

reje våndävane kåñëo

yathä ratyä ratéçvaraù

rädhayä—with Rädhä; kérti-sutayä—the daughter of

Kérti; candra-koöi-prakäçayä—splendid as millions of

moons; reje—shone; våndävane—in Våndävana forest; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; yathä—as; ratyä—with Rati;

ratéçvaraù—Kämadeva.

As Kämadeva shines with Rati by His side, so in Våndävana

forest Lord Kåñëa shone with Kérti's daughter Rädhä, who was more

beautiful and glorious than millions of moons, by His side.

Text 11

evaà präptäç ca yäù sarväù

çré-kåñëaà nanda-nandanam

paripürëatamaà säkñät

täsäà kià varëyate tapaù

evam—thus; präptäç—attained; ca—andf;

yäù—who; sarväù—all; çré-kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa;

nanda-nandanam—Nanda's son; paripürëatamam—the Supreme

Personality of Godhead; säkñät—directly; täsäm—of

them; kim—what?; varëyate—is described;

tapaù—austerities.

All these gopés attained Nanda's son, Lord Kåñëa, the

perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, as their lover. Who can

describe the austerities they must have performed?

Text 12

nägendra-kanyä yäù sarväs

caitra-mäse manohare

balabhadraà harià präptäù

kåñëä-tére tu täù çubhäù

nägendra-kanyä—the daughters of the Naga king;

yäù—who; sarväù—all; caitra-mäse—in ther month of

Caiutra; manohare—beautuful;

balabhadram—Balaräma; harim—Lord Hari;

präptäù—attained; kåñëä-tére—on the Yamunä's shore;

tu—indeed; täù—they; çubhäù—beautiful.

During the beautiful month of Caitra (March-April), by the

Yamunä's shore, the beautiful gopés that had been the daughters

of the Näga-king attained the Supreme Personality of Godhead,

Lord Balaräma, as their lover.

Text 13

idaà mayä te kathitaà

gopénäà caritaà çubham

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà

kià bhüyaù çrotum icchasi

idam—this; mayä—by me; te—to you;

kathitam—spoken; gopénäm—of the gs;

caritam—activities; çubham—beautiful; sarva-päpa—all

sins; haraàremoving; puëyaà sacred;

kim—what?; bhüyaù—more; çrotum—to hear;

icchasi—do you wish.

Now I have told you the beautiful and sacred story of the

gopés, a story that removes all sins. What more do you wish to

hear?

Text 14

çré-bahuläçva uväca

yamunäyäç ca païcäìgaà

dattaà durväsasä mune

gopébhyo yena govindaù

präptas tad brühi mäà prabho

çré-bahuläçva uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said; yamunäyäç—of

the Yamunä; ca—and; païcäìgam—pangangam

worship; dattam—given; durväsasä—by Durvasa;

mune—O sage; gopébhyaù—to the gs; yena—by which; govindaù—Lord Kåñëa; präptaù—attained;

tat—that; brühi—please tell; mäm—to me;

prabhaù—O lord.

Çré Bahuläçva said: O sage, please describe to me the païcäìga method of worshiping the Yamunä that Durväsä gave to

the gopés and that they followed to attain Lord Kåñëa.

Text 15

çré-närada uväca

atraivodaharantémaà

itihäsaà purätanam

yasya çravaëa-mätreëa

päpa-häniù parä bhavet

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; atra—here;

eva—indeed; udaharanti—describing; imam—this;

itihäsam—story; purätanam—ancient; yasya—of whom; çravaëa-mätreëa—simply by hearing; päpa—sins;

häniù—destorying; parä—great; bhavet—is.

Çré Närada said: Simply by hearing this ancient story one

becomes free of all sins.

Texts 16 and 17

ayodhyädhipatiù çrémän

mandhätä räja-sattamaù

mågayäà vicaran präptaù

saubharer äçramaà çubham

våndävane sthitaà säkñät

kåñëä-tére manohare

natvä jämätaraà räjä

saubharià präha mänadaù

ayodhyä—of Ayodhyä; adhipatiù—trhe king;

çrémän—glorious; mandhätä—Mandhätä; räja-sattamaù—the

best of kings; mågayam—in hunting; vicaran—going; präptaù—attained; saubhareù—of Saubhari Muni;

äçramam—the asrama; çubham—auspicious; våndävane—in

Våndävana; sthitam—situated; säkñät—directlky;

kåñëä-tére—by ther Yamunä's shore; manohare—beautiful; natvä—bowing down; jämätaram—to his son-in-law;

räjä—the king; saubharim—to saubhari; präha—said; mänadaù—respectful.

As glorious Mandhätä, the king of Ayodhyä, was hunting, he

wandered into Saubhari Muni's auspicious äçrama, which was in

beautiful Våndävana forest by the Yamunä's shore. Bowing down

before his son-in-law, the respectful king spoke to Saurabhi.

Text 18

çré-mandhätoväca

bhagavan sarva-vit säkñät

tvaà parävara-vittamaù

lokänäà tamaso 'ndhänäà

divya-sürya iväparaù

çré-mandhätoväca—Çré Mandhätä said; bhagavan—O

lord; sarva-vit—knowing everything;

säkñät—directly; tvam—you; parävara-vittamaù—the best

of the all-knowing; lokänäm—of the worlds; tamasaù—of

the darkness; andhänäm—darkened; divya-sürya—a

splendid sun; iva—like; aparaù—another.

Çré Mandhätä said: O Lord, O best of the all-knowing, You

are like a second sun that lights up the darkness of the worlds.

Text 19

iha loke bhäved räjyaà

sarva-siddhi-samanvitam

amutra kåñëa-sarüpyaà

yena syät tad vadäçu me

iha—in this; loke—world; bhävet—may be;

räjyam—a kinbgdom; sarva-siddhi-samanvitam—with all

perfections; amutra—in the next world; kåñëa—of Lord

Kåñëa; sarüpyam—with a form like His; yena—by

which; syät—may be; tat—that; vada—please

tell; äçu—at once; me—to me.

Please tell me how in this life I may attain a great kingdom

and in the next life a spiritual form like that of Lord Kåñëa.

Text 20

çré-saubharir uväca

yamunäyäç ca païcäìgaà

vadiñyämi tavägrataù

sarva-siddhi-karaà çaçvat

kåñëa-särüpya-kärakam

çré-saubharir uväca—Çré Saubhari said; yamunäyäç—of the

Yamunä; ca—and; païcäìgam—pancangam;

vadiñyämi—I will speak; tava agrataù—to you; sarva-

siddhi-karam—grantiung all perfection; çaçvat—always;

kåñëa-särüpya-kärakam—granting a spiritual form like Lord Kåñëa's.

Çré Saubhari said: I will describe to you the païcäìga method of worshiping the Yamunä. This worship brings

all perfection. It gives one a spiritual form like that of Lord

Kåñëa.

Text 21

yävat sürya udeti sma

yävac ca pratitiñöhati

tävad räjya-pradaà cätra

çré-kåñëa-vaça-kärakam

yävat—as long as; süryaù—the sun;

udeti—rises; sma—indeed; yävac—as long as;

ca—and; pratitiñöhati—stays; tävat—so long;

räjya—kingdom; pradam—gives; ca—and;

atra—here; çré-kåñëa—Çré Kåñëa; vaça—under

control; kärakam—doing.

This worship brings one a kingdom that lasts for as long as

the sun rises and shines in the sky. This worship makes Lord

Kåñëa into one's submissive servant.

Text 22

kavacaà ca stavaà nämnäà

sahasraà paöalaà tathä

paddhatià sürya-vaàçendra

païcäìgäni vidur budhäù

kavacam—armor; ca—and; stavam—prayer;

nämnäm—of names; sahasram—a thousand;

paöalam—paöala; tathä—so; paddhatim—paddhati;

sürya-vaàçendra—O king of the Surya dynasty; païcäìgäni—the five parts; viduù—know; budhäù—the

wise.

The wise know that the five parts of païcäìga

worship are: 1. kavaca, 2. stava, 3. sahasra-näma, 4. paöala, and

5. paddhati.
