The Story of Çeña
Text 1
çré-vaideha uväca
yad-rajo durlabhaà loke
yoginäà bahu-janmabhiù
tat-pädäbjaà hareù säkñäd
babhau käliya-mürdhasu
çré-vaidehaù uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said; yat—of whom; rajaù—the dust; durlabham—difficult to attain;
loke—in this world; yoginäm—by the yogis; bahu——with
many; janmabhiù—births; tat—of Him;
päda—feet; abjam—lotus; hareù—of Kåñëa;
säkñät—directly; babhau—was manifested; käliya-
mürdhasu—on the heads of Kaliya.
Çré Bahuläçva said: After many births even the great yogés
in this world cannot attain the dust of the Lord's feet. Still,
Lord Kåñëa placed His lotus feet directly on Käliya's heads.

kaù—who?; ayam—he; pürvam—previously;
kuçala-kåt—having done a pious deed; käliyaù—kaliya;
phaëinäm—of snakes; varaù—the best; enam—this;
veditum—to know; icchämi—I wish; brühi—please
tell; devarñi-sattama—O best of the divine sages.
What pious deeds did Käliya, the best of snakes, do in his
previous birth? This I wish to know. Please tell me this, O best
of divine sages.

sväyambhuväntare pürvaà
nämnä vedaçirä muniù
vindhyäcale tapo 'karñéd
bhågu-vaàça-samudbhavaù
çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; sväyambhuväntare—in
the Svayambhuva-manvantara; pürvam—before; nämnä—by
name; vedaçirä muniù—Vedasira Muni; vindhyäcale—in
the Vindhya Hills; tapaù—austerities;
akarñét—performed; bhågu-vaàça-samudbhavaù—born in the Bhågu
dynasty.
Çré Närada said: In ancient times, during the Sväyambhuva-
manvantara, a sage named Vedaçirä Muni, who was a descendent of
Bhågu Muni, performed austerities in the Vindhya Hills.

tad-äçrame tapaù kartuà
präpto hy açväçirä muniù
taà vékñya rakta-nayanaù
präha vedaçirä ruñä
tad-äçrame—at his äçrama; tapaù—uasterities;
kartum—to do; präptaù—attained; hy—indeed;; açväçirä muniù—Asvasira Muni; tam—to him;
vékñya—seeing; rakta-nayanaù—red eyes; präha—said; vedaçirä—Vedasira; ruñä—angrily.
Then, one day a sage named Açvaçirä Muni came to perform
austerities at this sage's äçrama. With red eyes staring at his
guest, Vedaçirä Muni angrily spoke.

mamäçrame tapo vipra
mä kuryäù sukhadaà na hi
anyatra te tapo-yogyä
bhümir nästi tapo-dhana
çré-vedaçirä uväca—Vedasira said; mama—my;
äçrame—in the asrama; tapaù—austerities; vipra—O
brähmaëa; mä—don't; kuryäù—do; sukhadam—giving
happiness; na—not; hi—indeed; anyatra—in
another place; te—of you; tapo-yogyä—sutiable for
yoga; bhümiù—place; na—not; asti—is;
tapo-dhana—O sage whose wealth is austerity.
Çré Vedaçirä said: O brähmaëa, don't perform austerities in
my äçrama. O sage whose wealth is austerity, is there no other
place where you can happily perform austerities?

çrutvätha vedaçiraso

krodha-yukto rakta-netraù

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; çrutvä—hearing; atha—then; vedaçirasaù—of Vedasira; väkyam—the
words; hy—indeed; äçvaçirä—Asvasira;
muniù—Muni; krodha-yuktaù—angry; rakta-netraù—his eyes
red; präha—said; tam—to him; muni—of sages; puìgavam—the best.
Çré Närada said: When he heard Vedaçirä's words, Açvaçirä
Muni became angry. With red eyes he spoke to the best of sages.

na te me muni-sattama
katibhir munibhiç cätra
na kåtaà tapa uttamam
çré-açvaçirä uväca—Açvaçirä said; mahä-viñëoù—of Lord
mahä-Viñëu; iyam—this; bhümiù—place;
na—not; te—of you; me—of me; muni-sattama—O best
of sages; katibhiù—by how many?; munibhiç—sages; ca—and; atra—here; na—not; kåtam—done;
tapa—austerities; uttamam—great.
Çré Açvaçirä said: O best of sages, this place belongs to
Lord Mahä-Viñëu. It does not belong to you or me. Have not many
sages already performed great austerities here?

çvasan sarpa iva tvaà bho
våthä krodhaà karoñi hi
tadä sarpo bhava tvaà hi
bhüyät te garuòäd bhayam
çvasan—hissing; sarpa—a snake; iva—like;
tvam—you; bhaù—O; våthä—uselessly;
krodham—angry; karoñi—are; hi—indeed;
tadä—then; sarpaù—a snake; bhava—become;
tvam—you; hi—indeed; bhüyät—may be; te—of
you; garuòät—from garuòa; bhayam—fear.
You are angry for no reason. You hiss as if you were a
snake. Become a snake! You will be terrified of Garuòa.

tvaà mahä-durabhipräyo
laghu-drohe mahodyamaù
käryärthé käka iva kau
tvaà käko bhava durmate
çré-vedaçirä uväca—Çré Vedasira said; tvam—you;
mahä-durabhipräyaù—don't understand anything; laghu—for a
slight; drohe—offense; mahä-great;
udyamaù—endeavor; käryärthé—wishing to do; käka—a
crow; iva—like; kau—on the earth; tvam—you; käkaù—a crow; bhava—become; durmate—O fool.
Çré Vedaçirä said: Fool, for a slight offense you plot a
great revenge! On this earth you are like a crow. Fool, become a
crow!

itthaà ca çapatos tayoù
sva-sva-çäpäd duùkhitayoù

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said;
äviräsét—appeared; tataù—then; viñëuù—Lord Viñëu; ittham—thus; ca—and; çapatoù—of the two cursing
sages; tayoù—of them; sva-sva-çäpät—each from his own
curse; duùkhitayoù—unhappy; säntvayäm
äsa—comforted; tau—them both; girä—with words.
Çré Närada said: Then Lord Viñëu appeared and consoled the
two sages, who were now unhappy with their curses.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: You are both
equally devoted to Me. O sages, you are like the two arms of My
body. O kings of the sages, I can make My own words false, but I
do not wish to allow the words of my devotees to become false.
That is My vow. O Vedaçirä, I will place My footprints on your
head. Because of them you will never fear Garuòa. O Açvaçirä,
hear My words. Don't lament. Please don't lament. You will have
the form of a crow, but you will have transcendental knowledge.
You will have yoga-siddhis and the highest knowledge in the three
worlds.

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said: ; ity—thus;
uktvä—saying; atha—then; gate—gon3; viñëau—Lord
Viñëu; munir açvaçirä—Asvasira Muni; nåpa—O king; säkñät—directly; käka-bhuñuëòaù—the crow Bhuñuëòa;
abhüt—became; yogéndraù—the king of sages; néla-
parvate—on Mount Néla.
Çré Närada said: After speaking these words, Lord Viñëu
departed. O king, then the sage Açvaçirä became the crow Bhuñuëòa
on Mount Néla.

räma-bhakto mahä-tejäù
sarva-çästrärtha-dépakaù
rämäyaëaà jagau yo vai
garuòäya mahätmane
räma—of Lord Rämacandra; bhaktaù—a devotee;
mahä-tejäù—very powerful; sarva—of all;
çästra—scriptures; artha—the meaning; dépakaù—a
lamp; rämäyaëam—the Rämäyaëa; jagau—recited;
yaù—who; vai—indeed; garuòäya—to mgaruòa;
mahätmane—the great soul.
He was devoted to Lord Rämacandra. He was very powerful. He
was a lamp shining on the meanings of all the scriptures. To
Garuòa he recited the Rämäyaëa.

cäkñuñe hy antare präpte
dakñaù pracetaso nåpa
kaçyapäya dadau kanyä
ekädaça manoharäù
cäkñuñe—the Caksusa-manvantara; hy—indeed;
antare—in; präpte—attained; dakñaù—Dakña;
pracetasaù—to the prajapati; nåpa—O king; kaçyapäya—to
Kaçyapa; dadau—gave; kanyä—daughters;
ekädaça—eleven; manoharäù—beautiful.
O king, during the Cäkñuña-manvantara Prajäpati Dakña gave
his eleven beautiful daughters in marriage to Kaçyapa Muni.

täsäà kadrüç ca yä çreñöhä
sädyaiva rohiëé småtä
vasudeva-priyä yasyäà
baladevo 'bhavat sutaù
täsäm—of them; kadrüù—Kadrü; ca—and;
yä—who; çreñöhä—the best; sä—she; adya—now; eva—even; rohiëé—as Rohiëé; småtä—is known;
vasudeva-priyä—dear to King Vasudeva; yasyäm—in whom;
baladevaù—Balaräma; abhavat—became; sutaù—the son.
Kadrü was the best of them. Today Kadrü is Rohiëé. She is
dear to Mahäräja Vasudeva. Lord Balaräma was born as her son.

käliyo 'bhud mahä-phaëé
sä-she; kadrüç—Kadru; ca—and; mahä-
sarpän—great snakes; janayäm äsa—gave birth;
koöiçaù—millions; mahodbhaöän—very powerful;
viña—poison; balän—strong; ugrän—horrible;
païca-çat—five hundred; änanän—heads;
mahä—great; maëi—jewels; dharän—having;
käàçcit—some; duùsahäàç—invincible; ca—and;
çatänanän—a hundred heads; teñäm—of them;
vedaçirä—Vedasira; näma—named; käliyaù—Kaliya;
abhut—became; mahä—great; phaëé—snake.
Kadrü gave birth to many millions of great, powerful,
invincible jewel-decorated, and very poisonous snakes, some
having five-hundred heads, and others having a hundred heads.
Among them Vedaçirä became the great snake Käliya.

teñäm ädau phaëéndro 'bhüc
cheño 'nantaù parät paraù
so 'dyaiva baladevo 'sti
rämo 'nanto 'cyutägrajaù
teñäm—of them; ädau—the first; phaëéndraù—the
king of snakes; abhüt—became; çeñaù anantaù—Ananta
Çeña; parät—than the greatest; paraù—greater;
saù—He; adya—now; eva—indeed;
baladevaù—Balaräma; asti—is; rämaù—Räma;
anantaù—limitless; acyuta—of the infallible Supreme
Personality of Godhead; agrajaù—the elder brother.
Ananta Çeña, the king of snakes, who is greater than the
greatest, was the first of them. Today Ananta is Balaräma, the
elder brother of the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead.

megha-gambhérayä girä
ekadä—one day; çré-hariù—Kåñëa;
säkñät—directly; bhagavän—the Supreme Personality of
Godhead; prakåteù—matter; paraù—beyond;
çeñam—to çeña; präha—said; prasanna—pleased;
ätmä—at heart; megha—cloud; gambhérayä—deep;
girä—with words.
One day Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who
is beyond the worlkd of matter and is always happy at heart, with
words like the rumbling of clouds, spoke to Ananta Çeña.

bhü-maëòalaà samädhätuà
sämarthyaà kasyacin na hi
tasmäd enaà mahé-golaà
mürdhni tvaà hi samuddhara
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; bhü-maëòalam—the earth; samädhätum—to hold
up; sämarthyam—ability; kasyacit—of someone;
na—not; hi—indeed; tasmät—from that;
enam—this; mahé-golam—the earth; mürdhni—on the
head; tvam—You; hi—indeed; samuddhara—please
hold.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: No one else has the
power to hold up the planets of Bhü-maëòala. You please carry
these planets on Your head.
Text 24
ananta-vikramas tvaà vai
yato 'nanta iti småtaù
idaà käryaà prakartavyaà
jana-kalyäëa-hetave
ananta—limitless; vikramaù—power; tvam—You; vai—indeed; yataù—therefore; ananta—limitless; iti—thus; småtaù—known; idam—this;
käryam—duty; prakartavyam—should be done; jana—of the
people; kalyäëa-hetave—for the welfare.
Your power is endless, and therefore You are known as Ananta
(the endless). Please accept this duty for the welfare of the
people.

avadhià kuru yävat tvaà
dharoddharasya me prabho
bhü-bhäraà dhärayiñyämi
tävat te vacanäd iha
çré-çeñaù uväca—Çré Çeña said; avadhim—limit;
kuru—please do; yävat—as; tvam—You; dharä-
uddharasya—of holding up the planets; me—of Me;
prabhaù—O Lord; bhü-bhäram—the burden of thre worlds;
dhärayiñyämi—I will hold; tävat—so; te—of You;
vacanät—from the words; iha—here.
Çré Çeña said: O Lord, please put some limit on how long I
must hold the world. Then, according Your word, I will hold up
Bhü-maëòala.

çré-bhagavän uväca
nityaà sahasra-vadanair
uccäraà ca påthak påthak
mad-guëa-sphuratäà nämnäà
kuru sarpendra sarvataù
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; nityam—always; sahasra-vadanaiù—with a thousand
heads; uccäram—holding up; ca—and; påthak
påthak—specific natures; mad-guëa-sphuratäm—the
manifestation of My qualities; nämnäm—of names;
kuru—do; sarpendra—O king of snakes; sarvataù—in all
respects.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O king of snakes,
with Your thousand mouths always chant My names, names that
reveal My transcendental qualities.

man-nämäni ca divyäni
yadä yänty avasänatäm
tadä bhü-bhäram uttärya
phaëis tvaà su-sukhé bhava
man-nämäni—My names; ca—and;
divyäni—transcendental; yadä—when; yanty—go;
avasänatäm—to the end; tadä—then; bhü-
bhäram—burden; uttärya—lifting; phaëiù—snake;
tvam—You; su-sukhé—very happy; bhava—become.
When You come to the end of all My transcendental names You
can put down the burden of Bhü-maëòala and relax.

ädhäro 'yaà bhaviñyämi
mad-ädhäraç ca ko bhavet
nirädhäraù kathaà toye
tiñöhämi kathaya prabho
çré-çeñaù uväca—Çré Çeña said; ädhäraù—holding up; ayam—that; bhaviñyämi—I will become; mad-
ädhäraù—holding up Me; ca—and; kaù—who?;
bhavet—will be; nirädhäraù—without someone to hold Me
up; katham—how?; toye—in the water; tiñöhämi—I
will stand; kathaya—please tell; prabhaù—O Lord.
Çré Çeña said: I will hold up Bhü-maëòala. But who will hold Me up? Without support how can I stand in the water? O Lord,
please tell Me.

ahaà ca kamaöho bhütvä
dhärayiñyämi te tanum
mahä-bhära-mayéà dérghaà
mä çocaà kuru mat-sakhe
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; aham—I; ca—and; kamaöhaù—a turtle;
bhütvä—having become; dhärayiñyämi—I will hold up;
te—of You; tanum—the form; mahä-bhära-mayém—holding a
great burden; dérgham—long; mä—don't;
çocam—lament; kuru—do; mat—My; sakhe—friend.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: I will become a
turtle and then I will hold You up. O My friend, don't be unhappy
to hold such a great burden for such a long time.

natvä çré-garuòa-dhvajam
jagäma nåpa pätäläd
adho vai lakña-yojanam
çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; tadä—then;
çeñaù—Çeña; samutthäya—rising; natvä—bowing;
çré-garuòa-dhvajam—the flag of Garuòa; jagäma—went;
nåpa—O king; pätälät—from Patalaloka; adhaù—below; vai—indeed; lakña-yojanam—eight hundred thousand miles.
Çré Närada said: O king, then Lord Çeña rose, bowed down
before Lord Kåñëa who holds the flag of Garuòa, and went eight
hundred thousand miles below Pätälaloka

gariñöhaà bhümi-maëòalam
dadhära sva-paëe çeño
'py ekasmiàç caëòa-vikramaù
gåhétvä—holding; sva-kareëa—with His own hand;
idam—this; gariñöham—great; bhümi-maëòalam—earth; dadhära—held; sva-paëe—in His hand; çeñaù—Lord
Çeña; api—also; ekasmiàç—in one; caëòa-
vikramaù—very powerful.
Then very powerful Ananta Çeña picked up Bhü-maëòala and
held it in one hand.

gate 'nante parät pare
anye phaëéndras tam anu
viviçur brahmaëoditäù
saìkarñane—when Lord Saìkarñaëa; atha—then;
pätäle—to palataloa; gate—went; anante—Lord
Ananta; parät—than the greatest; pare—greater;
anye—other; phaëéndraù—great snakes; tam—him;
anu viviçuù—followed; brahmaëä—of Brahmä;
uditäù—ordered.
When Saìkarñaëa Ananta went to Pätälaloka, by Brahmä's order
the other great snakes followed Him.

talätale tathä kecit
sampräptäs te rasätale
atale—Atale; vitale—Vitala; kecit—some;
sutale—Sutala; ca—and; mahätale—Mahatala;
talätale—Talatala; tathä—so; kecit—some;
sampräptäù—attained; te—indeed; rasätale—Rasatala.
Some went to Atalaloka and others to Sutalaloka,
Mahätalaloka, Talätalaloka, and Rasätalaloka.

tebhyas tu brahmaëä dattaà
dvépaà ramaëakaà bhuvi
käliya-pramukhäs tasmin
avasan sukha-samvåtäù
tebhyaù—to them; tu—indeed; brahmaëä—by
Brahmä; dattam—given; dvépaà ramaëakam—REamaëaka-
dvépa; bhuvi—in the world; käliya-pramukhäù—headed by
Kaliya; tasmin—in that place; avasan—lived;
sukha-samvåtäù—happy.
Many snakes headed by Käliya happily lived in Ramaëaka-
dvépa, the home Brahmä gave to them.

iti te kathitaà räjan
käliyasya kathänakam
bhuktidaà muktidaà säraà
kià bhüyaù çrotum icchasi
iti—thus; te—to you; kathitam—spoken;
räjan—O king; käliyasya—of Kaliya; kathänakam—the
story; bhuktidam—giving sense happiness;
muktidam—giving liberation; säram—the best;
kim—what?; bhüyaù—more; çrotum—to hear;
icchasi—do you wish.
O king, thus I have told you Käliya's story, which grants
both happiness in this world and also liberation. What more do
you wish to hear?
