Lord Krsna Extinguishes the Forest Fire and Reveals Himself to
the Brähmana's Wives
Text 1
cri-närada uväca
atha kriòä-prasaktesu
gopesu sa-balesu ca
trna-lobhena vivicur
gävaù sarväù mahad vanam
cri-närada uväca - Sri Närada said; atha - then;
kriòä-prasaktesu - intent on playing; gopesu - when the
gopas; sa-balesu - with Balaräma; ca - amd; trna-
lobhena - eager for grass; vivicuù - entered; gävaù - the
cows; sarväù - all; mahat - the great;
vanam - forest.
Sri Närada said: As Balaräma and the gopas intently played,
all the cows, hungry for more grass, went far into the forest.

tä änetum gopa-bäläù
präpta munjätavim paräm
sambhutas tatra dävägniù
pralayägni-samo mahän
täù - them; änetum - to bring back; gopa-bäläù - the
gopa boyas; präpta - attained; mu
24jätavim - Munjatavi forest; paräm - great;
sambhutaù - manifested; tatra - there; dävägniù - a forest
fire; pralayägni-samaù - like the fire at the time of cosmic
anihilation; mahän - great.
When to bring them back the gopa boys went to Mu
24jätavi forest, a great forest fire, like the fire at the end
of the universe, suddenly flared up.

gobhir gopäù sametäs te
cri-krsnam sa-balam harim
vadantaù pähi pähiti
bhayärtäù caranam gatäù
gobhiù - the cows; gopäù - the gopas;
sametäù - with; te - they; cri-krsnam - to Sri Krsna; sa-balam - and Balaräma; harim - Lord Krsna;
vadantaù - saying; pähi - save!; pähiti - save!;
bhayärtäù - frightened; caranam - shelter; gatäh - went.
Followed by the cows, and calling out "Save us! Save
us!", the frightened gopas took shelter of Krsna and Balaräma.

viksya vahni-bhayam svänäm
krsno yogecvarecvaraù
nyamilayata mä bhaista
locananänity abhäsata
viksya - seeing; vahni - of the fire; bhayam - the
fear; svänäm - of His devotees; krsnaù - Krsna;
yogecvarecvaraù - the master of yoga; nyamilayata - close;
mä - don't; bhaista - fear; locananäni - eyes;
iti - thus; abhäsata - said.
Seeing that His friends were afraid of the fire, Krsna, the
master of all yoga powers, said to them, "Close your
eyes. Don't be afraid."

tathä-bhutesu gopesu
tam agnim bhaya-kärakam
apibad bhagavän devo
devänäm pacyatäm nrpa
tathä-bhutesu - doing that; gopesu - the gopas;
tam - that; agnim - fire; bhaya-kärakam - terrifying;
apibat - drank; bhagavän - the Lord; devaù - the master;
devänäm - of the dmeigods; pacyatäm - looking on;
nrpa - O king.
As the gopas closed their eyes and the demigods looked on,
Lord Krsna drank up that terrifying fire.

evam pitvä mahä-vahnim
nitvä gopäla-go-ganam
präpto 'bhud yamunä-päre
cubhäcoka-vane hariù
evam - thus; pitvä - having drunk; mahä-vahnim - the
great fire; nitvä - bringing; gopäla-go-ganam - the
gopsas and cows; präptaù - attained; abhut - was;
yamunä-päre - on the other shore of thr Yamunä;
cubha - beautiful; acoka - of asoka trees; vane - in the
forest; hariù - Lord Krsna.
After drinking up the great fire, Lord Krsna took the cows and gopas to a beautiful acoka forest on the Yamunä's farther
shore.
Text 7
tatra ksut-piòitä gopäù
cri-krsnam sa-balam harim
krtänjali-putä ucuù
ksudhärtäù sma vayam prabho
tatra - there; ksut-piòitä - tormented with hunger;
gopäù - the gopas; cri-krsnam - to Sri Krsna; sa-balam - and
Balaräma; harim - Krsna; krtänjali-putä - with
folded hands; ucuù - said; ksudhärtäù - tormented with
hunder; sma - indeed; vayam - we are; prabhaù - O
master.
Tormented with hunger, the gopas, respectfully folding their
hands said to Krsna and Balaräma, "O Lord, we are
tormented with hunger."
Text 8
tadä tän presayäm äsa
yajna äggirase hariù
te gatvä tam yajna-väram
natvocur vimalam vacaù
tadä - then; tän - them; presayäm äsa - sent;
yajne äggirase - to an angirasa-yajna;
hariù - Krsna; te - they; gatvä - going; tam - this;
yajna-väram - to the brähmana assembled for the
yajna; natvä - bowing down; ucuù - spoke;
vimalam - sweet; vacaù - words.
Lord Krsna sent them to a place where an äggirasa-yaj
24a was being performed. The boys went to the yajna,
bowed down before the performers of the yajna, and spoke
many sweet words.

cri-gopä ucuù
gopäla-bälaiù sa-balaù samägato
gäc cärayan chri-vraja-räja-nandanaù
ksut-samyuto 'smai sa-ganäya bhusuräù
prayacchatäcv annam anagga-mohine
cri-gopä ucuù - the gopas said; gopäla-bälaiù - with gopa
boys; sa-balaù - with Balaräma; samägataù - come;
gäc - cows; cärayan - herding; cri-vraja-räja-nandanaù - the
prince of Vraja; ksut-samyutaù - hungry; asmai - to
Him; sa-ganäya - and His company; bhusuräù - O
brähmanas; prayacchata - please give; äcu - now; annam - food; anagga-mohinemore charming than Kämadeva.
The gopas said: Herding the cows in the company of Balaräma
and many gopa boys, Sri Krsna, the prince of Vraja, who is more
handsome than Kämadeva, is now hungry. O brähmanas, please give
some food to Him and His companions.
Text 10
cri-närada uväca
na kincid ucus te sarve
vacaù crutvä dvijä nrpa
gopä niräcä ägatya
ity ucuù sa-balam harim
cri-närada uväca - Sri Närada said; na - not; ki
24cit - anything; ucuù - said; te - they;
sarve - all; vacaù - words; crutvä - hearing;
dvijä - the brähmanas; nrpa - O king; gopä - the gopas;
niräcä - giving up hope; ägatya - returning;
ity - thus; ucuù - said; sa-balam - with Balaräma;
harim - to Lord Krsna.
Sri Närada said: Although they heard these words, the
brähmanas did not say anything in reply. Giving up hope, the
gopas returned and told all this to Krsna and Balaräma.

cri-gopä ucuù
tvam asy adhico vraja-manòale bali
cri-gokule nanda-puro 'gra-danòa-dhrk
na vartate danòam alam madhoù puri
pracanòa-canòämsu-mahas tava sphurat
cri-gopä ucuù - the gopas said; tvam - You;
asy - are; adhicaù - the Lord; vraja-manòale - in the circle
of Vraja; bali - powerful; cri-gokule - in Sri
Gokula; nanda-puraù - in Nanda-pura; agra-danòa-
dhrk - the right punish others; na - not; vartate - is;
danòam - punishment; alam - enough; madhoù puri - in
Mathurä; pracanòa-canòämsu-mahaù - glorious and powerful as
the blazing sun; tava - by You; sphurat - manifested.
The gopas said: You are the powerful ruler in the circle of
Vraja. In Sri Gokula and in Nandapura You have the right to
punish others. In this land of Mathurä You are glorious and
powerful and the blazing son. There is not punishment enough that
You can give to these people.

tat-patnibhyo hariù svayam
yajna-vätam punar gatvä
natvä vipra-priyäs tadä
krtänjali-putä ucur
gopäù krsna-pranoditäù
cri-närada uväca - Sri Närada said; punaù - again;
tän - them; presayäm äsa - sent; tat-patnibhyaù - to their
wives; hariù - Krsna; svayam - personally; yaj
24a-vätam - tp the place of the yajna; punaù - again;
gatvä - going; natvä - bowing down; vipra-priyäù - to the
brähmanas' wives; tadä - then; krtänjali-
putä - with folded hands; ucuù - said; gopäù - the
gopas; krsna - by Lord Krsna; pranoditäù - sent.
Lord Krsna sent them again, this time to the brähmanas'
wives. Arriving at the place of the yajna, the gopas sent
by Krsna bowed down before the brähmanas' wives and, respectfully
folding their hands, spoke.

The gopas said: Herding the cows in the company of Balaräma

cri-närada uväca - Sri Närada said; krsnam - Lord
Krsna; samägatam - come; crutvä - hearing; krsna-
darcana - to see Lord Krsna; lälasäù - eager;
cakruù - became; tathä - then; annam - food;
pätresu - in vessals; nitvä - taking; sarvä - all;
dvijägganäù - the brahmanis; tyaktvä - abandoning;
sadyaù - at once; loka-lajjäm - shyness of what people may
think; krsna-pärcvam - to Lord Krsna's side;
samäyayuù - went; acokänäm - of asoka trees; vane - in the
forest; ramye - beautiful; krsnä-tire - on the Yamunä's
shore; manohare - beautiful.
Sri Närada said: When they heard that Krsna had come, the
brähmana women became very eager to see Him. Taking different
kinds of food in many containers, and not thinking of how they
might be criticized for their actions, they all went to Krsna in
the beautiful acoka forest by the Yamunä's beautiful shore.

yathä crutam tathä drstam
cri-hareù rupam adbhutam
präpyänandam gatäù sarväs
turiyam yogino yathä
yathä - as; crutam - heard; tathä - so;
drstam - seen; cri-hareù - of Sri Krsna; rupam - teh
form; adbhutam - wonderful; präpya - attaining;
änandam - blissed; gatäù - attained; sarväù - all;
turiyam - the transcendental position; yoginaù - yogis;
yathä - as.
When they saw Lord Krsna's wonderful form, which was just as
they had heard it described, they became filled with bliss. They
all attained the transcendental platform attained by the greatest
yogis.

cri-bhagavän uväca
dhanyä yuyam darcanärtham
ägatä he dvijägganäù
pratiyäta grhän chighram
niùcagkä bhumi-devatäù
cri-bhagavän uväca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; dhanya - fortunate; yuyam - you all;
darcanärtham - to see; ägatä - come; he - O;
dvijägganäù - brähmana women; pratiyäta - please return;
grhän - to your homes; cighram - at once; niùcagkä - without fear; bhumi-devatäh - _ - O brähmanas.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O brähmanis, you
are all very fortunate to have come here to see Me. Now, without
any fear, please return to your homes.
Texts 18 and 19
yusmäkam tu prabhävena
patayo vo dvijätayaù
sadyo yajna-phalam präpya
yusmäbhiù saha nirmaläù
gamisyanti param dhäma
golokam prakrteù param
atha natvä harim sarvä
äjagmur yajna-manòale
yusmäkam - of you; tu - indeed; prabhävena - by the
power; patayaù - husbands; vaù - of you;
dvijätayaù - brähmanas; sadyaù - at once; yajna-
phalam - the result of the yajna; präpya - attaining;
yusmäbhiù - with you all; saha - with; nirmaläù - pure;
gamisyanti - will go; param - to the supreme;
dhäma - abode; golokam - Goloka; prakrteù - the material
energy; param - above; atha - then;
natvä - bowing; harim - to Lord Hari; sarvä - all;
äjagmuù - returned; yajna-manòale - to the circle of the
yajna.
After attaining the result of this yajn, your pure-
hearted brähmana husbands will go, by Your spiritual power, to
the supreme abode of Goloka, which is beyond the world of matter.
Then all the women offered their respectful obeisances to
Lord Krsna and returned to the circle of the yajna.

svätmänam dhik pracakrire
didrksavas te cri-krsnam
kamsäd bhitä na cägatäù
cri-närada uväca - Sri Närada said; tä - they;
drstvä - seeing; brähmanäù - the brähmanas; sarve - all;
svätmänam - to themselves; dhik - rebuke;
pracakrire - did; didrksavaù - yearning to see;
te - they; cri-krsnam - Sri Krsna; kamsät - of Kamsa;
bhitä - afraid; na - not; ca - and; ägatäù - went.
Sri Närada said: When they saw their wives, the brähmanas
rebuked themselves. Although they also yearned to see Lord Krsna, out of fear of Kamsa they did not go to see Him.

bhuktvännam sa-balaù krsno
gopälaiù saha maithila
gäù pälayan äjagäma
vrndäranyam manoharam
bhuktvä - eating; annam - the food; sa-balaù - with
Balaräma; krsnaù - Krsna; gopälaiù - with ther gopas;
saha - with; maithila - O king of Mithilä; gäù - the
cows; pälayan - protecting; äjagäma - came;
vrndäranyam - to Vrndävana forest; manoharam - beautiful.
O king of Mithilä, when they had finished eating, Krsna,
Balaräma, and the gopas took the cows to beautiful Vrndävana
forest.
