Bakäsura-mokña

The Liberation of Bakäsura

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

ekadä cärayan vatsän

sa-rämo bälakair hariù

yamunä-nikaöe präptaà

bäkaà daityaà dadarça ha

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; ekadä—once;

cärayan—herding; vatsän—the calves; sa-rämaù—with

Balaräma; bälakaiù—with the boys; hariù—Kåñëa;

yamunä-nikaöe—near the Yamunä; präptam—attained;

bäkam—a duck; daityam—demon; dadarça—saw;

ha—indeed.

Çré Närada said: One day, as He was herding the calves in

the company of Balaräma and the boys, Kåñëa saw a great duck

demon by the Yamunä's shore.

Text 2

çveta-parvata-saìkäço

båhat-pädo ghana-dhvaniù

paläyiteñu bäleñu

vajra-tuëòo 'grasad dharim

çveta-parvata-saìkäçaù—like a great white mountain;

båhat-pädaù—with gigantic feet; ghana-dhvaniù—the rumbling

of clouds; paläyiteñu—fled; bäleñu—the boys;

vajra—thunderbolt; tuëòaù—beak; agrasat—swallowed; harim—Kåñëa.

Its form a white mountain, its feet gigantic, its quacking

the rumbling of clouds, and its beak a thunderbolt, the demon

swallowed Lord Kåñëa as the boys fled.

Text 3

rudanto bälakäù sarve

gata-praëä iväbhavan

hä-hä-käraà tadä kåtvä

deväù sarve samägatäù

rudantaù—crying; bälakäù—the boys; sarve—all; gata-praëä—their live breathj gone; iva—as if;

abhavan—became; hä-hä-käram—alas! alas!;

tadä—then; kåtvä—doing; deväù—the demigods;

sarve—all; samägatäù—came.

All the boys wept as if they had lost their lives. All the

demigods came and cried out, "Alas! Alas!"

Text 4

indro vajraà tadä nétvä

taà tatäda mahä-balam

tena ghäöena patito

na mamära samutthitaù

indraù—Indra; vajram—thunderbolt; tadä—then; nétvä—bringing; tam—it; tatäda—struck; mahä-

balam—very powerful; tena—by that; ghäöena—blow; patitaù—fallen; na—not; mamära—died;

samutthitaù—stood up.

Bringing his very powerful thunderbolt, Indra struck the

demon. With that blow the demon fell, but he did not die. Again

the demon stood up.

Text 5

brahmäpi brahma-daëòena

taà tatäda ruñänvitaù

tena ghäöena patito

mürchito ghäöikä-dvayam

brahmä—Brahmä; api—also; brahma-daëòena—with his

brahma-weapon; tam—him; tatäda—struck;

ruñänvitaù—angry; tena—by that; ghäöena—blow;

patitaù—fell; mürchitaù—unconscious; ghäöikä-

dvayam—for two ghatikas.

Then Brahmä became angry and with his brahma-daëòa struck

the demon. With that blow the demon fell and was unconscious for

two ghaöikäs.

Note: One ghaöikä equals 24 minutes.

vidhunvan sva-tanuà vegäj

jåmbhitaù punar utthitaù

na mamära tadä daityo

jagarja ghanavad balé

vidhunvan—shaking; sva-tanum—his body;

vegät—quickly; jåmbhitaù—yawned; punaù—again;

utthitaù—rose; na—not; mamära—died;

tadä—then; daityaù—the demon; jagarja—roared;

ghanavat—like a cloud; balé—powerful.

The demon powerful did not die. He shook his body, yawned,

again stood up, and roared like a cloud.

Text 7

trilocanas tri-çülena

taà jaghäna mahäsuram

chinnaika-pakño daityo 'pi

na måto 'ti-bhayaìkaraù

trilocanaù—Çiva; tri-çülena—with his trident;

tam—him; jaghäna—struck; mahäsuram—the great

demon; chinna—cut; eka—one; pakñaù—wing;

daityaù—the demon; api—even; na—not;

måtaù—died; ati-bhayaìkaraù—very fearful.

With his trident Çiva struck the great demon. One wing was

cut off, but still the very fearful demon did not die.

väyavyästreëa väyus taà

saïjaghäna bäkaà tataù

uccacäla bäkas tena

punas tatra sthito 'bhavat

väyavya-astreëa—with his wind-weapon; väyuù—Väyu; tam—him; saïjaghäna—struck; bäkam—the

duck; tataù—then; uccacäla—flew away; bäkaù—the

duck; tena—by that; punaù—again;

tatra—there; sthitaù—stood; abhavat—became.

With his wind-weapon Väyu struck the duck demon. The duck

flew away and then returned.

Text 9

yamas taà yama-daëòena

tädayäm äsa cägrataù

tena daëòena na måto

bako vai caëòa-vikramaù

yamaù—Yama; tam—him; yama-daëòena—with his yama-

daëòa; tädayäm äsa—struck; ca—and; agrataù—from

that; tena—by that; daëòena—weapon; na—not; måtaù—died; bakaù—the duck; vai—indeed;

caëòa-vikramaù—very powerful.

With his yama-daëòa Yama struck the demon. With that blow

the very powerful duck did not die.

Text 10

daëòo 'pi bhagnatäà prägät

sa kñato näbhavad bakaù

tadaiva cägrataù präptas

caëòäàçuç caëòa-vikramaù

daëòaù—the weapon; api—even; bhagnatäm—the state

of being broken; prägät—attained; sa—he;

kñataù—broken; na—not; abhavat—was; bakaù—the

duck; tadä—then; eva—indeed; ca—and;

agrataù—in the presence; präptaù—attained;

caëòäàçuù—Sürya; caëòa-vikramaù—powerful.

Indeed, the yama-daëòa became broken, but the duck was not

hurt. Then powerful Sürya approached.

çata-bäëair bakaà daityaà

saïjaghäna dhanur-dharaù

tékñnaiù pakña-gatair bäëair

na mamära bakas tataù

çata—hundred; bäëaiù—with arrows; bakam—the

duck; daityam—demon; saïjaghäna—struck; dhanuù—a bow; dharaù—hilding; tékñnaiù—sharp; pakña-gataiù—gone to the wing; bäëaiù—with arrows;

na—not; mamära—died; bakaù—the duck; tataù—then.

The archer Sürya struck the demon duck with a hundred sharp

arrows flying to his wing. The duck did not die.

Text 12

dhanadas taà ca khaògena

su-tékñëena jaghäna ha

chinna-dvitéya-pakño 'bhün

na måto daitya-puìgavaù

dhanadaù—Kuvera; tam—him; ca—and;

khaògena—with a sword; su-tékñëena—very sahrp;

jaghäna—struck; ha—indeed; chinna—cut;

dvitéya—the second; pakñaù—wing; abhün—was;

na—not; måtaù—died; daitya-puìgavaù—the best of

demons.

With a sharp sword Kuvera attacked the demon. His second

wing was cut away, but the great demon did not die.

Text 13

néhärästreëa taà somaù

saïjaghäna mahä-bakam

çétärto mürchito daityo

na måtaù punar utthitaù

néhära-astreëa—with his ice-weapon; tam—him;

somaù—Soma; saïjaghäna—struck; mahä-bakam—the

great duck; çéta—with cold; ärtaù—pained;

mürchitaù—fainted; daityaù—the demon; na—not;

måtaù—died; punaù—again; utthitaù—stood.

With his ice-weapon Soma struck the great duck. Tormented by

the cold, the demon fainted, but then again he stood up.

Text 14

ägneyyästreëa taà hy agniù

santatäda mahä-bakam

bhasma-romäbhavad daityo

na mamära mahä-khalaù

ägneyya-astreëa—with his fire-weapon; tam—him;

hi—indeed; agniù—Agni; santatäda—struck; mahä-

bakam—the great duck; bhasma—ashes; romä—feathers; abhavat—became; daityaù—the demon; na—not;

mamära—died; mahä-khalaù—very wicked.

With his fire-weapon Agni struck the great duck. Even though

his feathers were burned to ashes, the very wicked demon did not

die.

apäà patis taà päçena

baddhvä kau vicakärña ha

karñaëät sa mahä-päpaç

chinno 'bhün na måtaç ca vai

apäm—of the waters; patiù—the lord; tam—him; päçena—with a rope; baddhvä—bound; kau—on the

ground; vicakärña—dragged; ha—indeed;

karñaëät—from dragging; sa—he; mahä-päpaù—great

sinner; chinnaù—broken; abhüt—was; na—not; måtaù—dead; ca—and; vai—indeed.

Varuëa bound him with a rope and dragged him across the

ground. From the dragging the great sinner was hurt, but he did

not die.

Text 16

tatäda gadayä taà vai

bhadrakälé tarasviné

mürchitas tat-prahäreëa

paraà kaçmalatäà yayau

tatäda—struck; gadayä—with a club; tam—him; vai—indeed; bhadrakälé—Bhadrakälé;

tarasviné—powerful; mürchitaù—fainted; tat-

prahäreëa—by the blow; param—great;

kaçmalatäm—coma; yayau—attained.

Then powerful goddess Bhadrakälé struck him with a mace.

With that blow he fainted and fell into a deep coma.

kñata-mürdhä samutthäya

vidhunvan sva-tanuà punaù

jagarja ghanavad véro

bako daityo mahä-khalaù

kñata—wounded; mürdhä—head; samutthäya—rose; vidhunvan—shaking; sva-tanum—his body;

punaù—again; jagarja—roared; ghanavat—like a

cloud; véraù—heroic; bakaù—duck;

daityaù—demon; mahä-khalaù—very wicked.

His head broken, the very wicked and powerful demon duck

rose, shook his body, and roared like a thundering cloud.

Text 18

tadä çakti-dharaù çaktià

tasmai cikñepa sa-tvaraù

tayaika-pädo bhagno 'bhün

na måtaù pakñiëäà varaù

tadä—then; çakti-dharaù—kärttikeya;

çaktim—sakti; tasmai—to him; cikñepa—threw; sa-

tvaraù—quickly; tayä—by that; eka—one;

pädaù—foot; bhagnaù—broken; abhün—was;

na—not; måtaù—died; pakñiëäm—of birds; varaù—the

best.

Then Kärttikeya threw his çakti-weapon at him. Although one

of his feet was cut, that demon, the best of birds, did not die.

tadä krodhena sahasä

dhävan daityas taòit-svanaù

devän vidrävayäm äsa

sva-caïcvä tékñëa-tuëòayä

tadä—then; krodhena—with anger; sahasä—at

once; dhävan—running; daityaù—the demon;

taòit-svanaù—making a sound of thunder; devän—the

demigods; vidrävayäm äsa—put to flight; sva-caïcvä—with his beak; tékñëa-tuëòayä—very sharp.

Then, roaring like thunder, the demon angrily chased the

demigods and with his sharp beak made them flee.

agre paläyitän devän

anvadhävad bako 'mbare

punas tatra gato daityo

nädayan maëòalaà diçam

agre—ahead; paläyitän—fleeing;

devän—demigods; anvadhävat—followed; bakaù—the

duck; ambare—in the sky; punaù—again;

tatra—there; gataù—went; daityaù—the demon;

nädayan—filling with sound; maëòalam—the circle;

diçam—of the directions.

The demigods flew into the sky and the demon, filling the

circle of the directions with sound, flew after them.

Text 21

tadä devarñayaù sarve

sarve brahmarñayo dvijäù

çré-nanda-nandanäyäçu

sa-phalaà cäçiñaà daduù

tadä—then; devarñayaù—the devarñis;

sarve—all; sarve—all; brahmarñayaù—the brahmarñis; dvijäù—the brahmanas; çré-nanda-nandanäya—to the son of

Nanda; äçu—at ocne; sa-phalam—with results;

ca—and; äçiñam—blessing; daduù—gave.

Then all the devarñis, brahmarñis, and brähmaëas offered

blessings to Nanda's son, Kåñëa.

Text 22

tadaiva kåñëas tan-madhye

tatäna vapur ujjvalam

caccharda kåñëaà sahasä

kñata-kaëöho mahä-bakaù

tadä—then; eva—indeed; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; tan-

madhye—in the midst of the demon; tatäna—expanded;

vapuù—form; ujjvalam—glorious; caccharda—vomited; kåñëam—Kåñëa; sahasä—at once; kñata—broken;

kaëöhaù—throast; mahä—the great; bakaù—duck.

Then, from inside the duck Kåñëa expanded His glorious form.

His throat broken, the great duck at once vomited Kåñëa out.

Text 23

punaù kåñëaà samähartuà

tékñnayä tuëòayägatam

pucche gåhétvä taà kåñëaù

pothayäm äsa bhü-tale

punaù—again; kåñëam—Kåñëa; samähartum—to

grab; tékñnayä—with his sharp; tuëòayägatam—beak; pucche—the tail; gåhétvä—grasping; tam—him;

kåñëaù—Kåñëa; pothayäm äsa—thre; bhü-tale—to the

ground.

When the duck came to catch Kåñëa in his beak, Kåñëa grasped

the duck's tail and threw him to the ground.

Text 24

punar utthäya tuëòaà svaà

prasaryyävasthitaà bakam

dadära tuëòe hastäbhyäà

kåñëaù çäkhäà gajo yathä

punaù—again; utthäya—rising; tuëòam—beak;

svam—own; prasaryya—opening; avasthitam—situated; bakam—duck; dadära—split; tuëòe—in the beak;

hastäbhyäm—with both hands; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; çäkhäm—a

tree-branch; gajaù—an elephant; yathä—as.

The duck stood up again and opened his beak. With both hands

Kåñëa split the duck's beak as an elephant breaks a tree-branch.

Text 25

tadä måtasya daityasya

jyotiù kåñëe samäviçat

devatä vavåñuù puñpair

jayärävaiù samanvitäù

tadä—then; måtasya—dead; daityasya—from the

demon; jyotiù—light; kåñëe—in Lord Kåñëa;

samäviçat—entered; devatä—the demigods;

vavåñuù—showered; puñpaiù—flowers; jaya—of

victory; ärävaiù—with sounds; samanvitäù—with.

Then the demon died. A light left his body and entered Lord

Kåñëa. With shouts of "Victory!", the demigods showered

flowers.

Text 26

gopälä vismitäù sarve

kåñëaà saàçliñya sarvataù

ücus tvaà kusalé-bhüto

mukto måtyu-mukhät sakhe

gopäläù—the gopas; vismitäù—surprised;

sarve—all; kåñëam—Kåñëa; saàçliñya—embracing;

sarvataù—in all respects; ücuù—said; tvam—You;

kusalé-bhütaù—are well; muktaù—freed; måtyu—of

death; mukhät—from the mouth; sakhe—O friend.

Filled with wonder, all the gopas embraced Kåñëa and said,

"Friend, You are saved from death's mouth!"

Text 27

evaà kåñëo bakaà hatvä

sa-balo bälakaiù saha

go-vatsair harñito gäyann

äyayau räja-mandire

evam—thus; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; bakam—the duck;

hatvä—having killed; sa-balaù—with Balaräma;

bälakaiù—the boys; saha—with; go-vatsaiù—with the

calves; harñitaù—joyful; gäyan—singing;

äyayau—came; räja-mandire—to the royal palace.

After killing the duck, Kåñëa, cheerful and singing as He

went, returned with the boys and calves to (His father's) palace.

paripürëatamasyäsya

çré-kåñëasya mahätmanaù

jagur gåhe gatä bälaù

çrutvedaà te 'ti-vismitäù

paripürëatamasyäsya—of the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; çré-kåñëasya—Çré Kåñëa; mahätmanaù—the

Supreme Lord; jaguù—sang; gåhe—in the home;

gatäù—went; bälaù—the boys; çrutvä—hearing;

idam—this; te—they; ati-vismitäù—very surprised.

When they entered the house, the boys told what Çré Kåñëa,

the Supreme Personality of Godhead, had done, and when the people

heard it they became filled with wonder.

çré-bahuläçva uväca

ko 'yaà daityaù pürva-kale

kasmät kena bako 'bhavat

pürëa-brahmaëi sarveçe

çré-kåñëe lénatäà gataù

çré-bahuläçvaù uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said: kaù—who?;

ayam—this; daityaù—demon; pürva-kale—in the previous

time; kasmät—why?; kena—by whom?; bakaù—a

duck; abhavat—became; pürëa-brahmaëi—in the Supreme

Brahman; sarveçe—the master of all; çré-kåñëe—Çré

Kåñëa; lénatäm—merging; gataù—attained.

Çré Bahuläçva said: Who was this demon before? Why did he

become a duck? Why was he able to enter Çré Kåñëa, who is the

Supreme Personality of Godhead and the master of all?

hayagréva-suto daitya

utkalo näma he nåpa

raëe 'marän vinirjitya

çakra-cchatraà jahära ha

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; hayagréva-sutaù—the son of hayagréva; daitya—a demon; utkalaù—Utkala; näma—named; he—O; nåpa—king; raëe—in

battle; amarän—the demigods;

vinirjitya—defeating; çakra—of Indra; chatram—the

parasol; jahära—stole; ha—certainly.

Çré Närada said: O king, he was a demon named Utkala, who

was Hayagréva's son. He defeated many demigods in battle and he

stole Indra's parasol.

Text 31

tathä nåëäà nåpänäà ca

räjyaà håtvä mahä-balaù

cakära varñäëi çataà

räjyaà sarva-vibhütimat

tathä—so; nåëäm—of men; nåpänäm—of kings;

ca—and; räjyam—the kingdom; håtvä—taking; mahä-

balaù—very powerful; cakära—did; varñäëi—years;

çatam—a hundred; räjyam—kingdom; sarva-

vibhütimat—having all opulences.

Stealing from the kingdoms of many human kings, for a

hundred years this powerful demon ruled a kingdom full of all

opulence.

ekadä vicaran daityaù

sindhu-sägara-saìgame

jäjaler muni-siddhasya

parëa-çäla-samépataù

ekadä—one day; vicaran—going; daityaù—the

demon; sindhu—of the river; sägara—and the ocean; saìgame—at the meeting; jäjaleù—of jajali; muni-

siddhasya—the best of sages; parëa-çäla-samépataù—near a

leaf-hut.

One day the demon came near Jäjali's Muni's leaf hut at the

place where the Gaìgä meets the ocean.

Text 33

jale nékñipya baòiçaà

ménän äkarñayan muhuù

niñedhito 'pi muninä

nämanyata sa durmatiù

jale—in the water; nékñipya—throwing; baòiçam— a

fishhook; ménän—a fgish; äkarñayan—caught;

muhuù—again and again; niñedhitaù—forbidden;

api—even; muninä—by the sage; na—not;

ämanyata—respected; sa—he; durmatiù—wicked-hearted.

Casting a fishhook into the water, the demon caught a fish.

Although forbidden again and again, the wicked-hearted demon gave

no respect (to the sage's words).

Text 34

tasmai çäpaà dadau siddho

jäjalir muni-sattamaù

bakavat tvaà jhañän atsi

tvaà bako bhava durmate

tasmai—to him; çäpam—a curse; dadau—gave;

siddhaù—perfect; jäjaliù—Jäjali; muni-sattamaù—the

best of sages; bakavat—like a duck; tvam—you;

jhañän—fish; atsi—eat; tvam—you; bakaù—a

duck; bhava—become; durmate—O demon.

The perfect sage Jäjali cursed him: "O demon, you

eat fish like a duck, then become a duck!"

Text 35

tat-kñaëäd baka-rüpo 'bhud

bhrasta-tejä gata-smayaù

patitaù pädayos tasya

natvä präha kåtäïjaliù

tat-kñaëät—from that moment; baka—of a duck;

rüpaù—the form; abhut—became; bhrasta—broken;

tejä—power; gata—gone; smayaù—pride;

patitaù—fallen; pädayoù—at the feet; tasya—of him; natvä—bowing down; präha—said; kåtäïjaliù—with folded hands.

In a moment he became a duck. His powers lost and his pride

and arrogance gone, he fell with folded hands at the sage's feet

and spoke to him.

utkala uväca

na jäne te tapaç-caëòaà

mune mäà pähi jäjale

sädhünäà bhavatäà saìgaà

mokña-dväraà paraà viduù

utkalaù uväca—Utkala said; na—not; jäne—I

know; te—your; tapaç-caëòam—power of austerity; mune—O sage; mäm—me; pähi—protect; jäjale—O

Jäjali; sädhünäm—of saints; bhavatäm—of you;

saìgam—association; mokña—to liberation; dväram—the

door; param—great; viduù—they know.

Utkala said: O sage, save me! I did not know the power of

your austerities. (The wise) know that association with great

saints like yourself is the great door to liberation.

Text 37

mitre çatrau samä mäne

'pamäne hema-loñöayoù

sukhe duùkha-samä ye vai

tvädåçäù sädhavaç ca te

mitre—friend; çatrau—and enemy; samä—the

same; mäne—honor; apamäne—and dishonor;

hema—gold; loñöayoù—and a clod of earth; sukhe—in

happiness; duùkha—and unhappiness; samä—the same; ye—who; vai—indeed; tvädåçäù—like you;

sädhavaù—saints; ca—and; te—they.

Saints like yourself see friends and enemies equally. They

see that honor and dishonor, gold and a clod of earth, and

happiness and unhappiness are all the same.

Text 38

kià kià na jätaà mahatäà

darçanät kau mune nåëäm

pärameñöhyaà ca sämräjyaà

aindra-yoga-padaà labhet

kim—what?; kim—what?; na—not;

jätam—born; mahatäm—of the saints; darçanät—from the

sight; kau—on earth; mune—O sage; nåëäm—of

men; pärameñöhyam—of Brahmä; ca—and;

sämräjyam—the kingdom; aindra-yoga-padam—the post of

Indra; labhet—may obtain.

O sage, what, what does one not obtain by seeing great

saints? By seeing them one obtains Brahmä's kingdom and Indra's

station.

Text 39

jäjale muni-çärdüla

traivargyaà kim abhüj janaiù

sädhünäà kåpayä säkñät

pürëaà brahmäpi labhyate

jäjale—O Jäjali; muni-çärdüla—O tiger of sages;

traivargyam—the three goals of life; kim—what?;

abhüt—become; janaiù—by men; sädhünäm—of sdaints; kåpayä—by the mercy; säkñät—directly; pürëam—the

full; brahma—Supreme; api—even; labhyate—is

attained.

O Jäjali, O tiger of sages, what is the use of the three

goals of life? By the mercy of great saints one can attain the

Supreme Brahman.

jäjalis tam uväca ha

varña-ñañöi-sahasräëi

tapas taptaà ca yena vai

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; tadä—then;

prasannaù—pleased; sa—he; muniù—the sage;

jäjaliù—Jäjali; tam—to him; uväca—said;

ha—indeed; varña—years; ñañöi—60;

sahasräëi—thousand; tapaù—austerities; taptam—to

perform; ca—and; yena—by that; vai—indeed.

Çré Närada said: Pleased, Jäjali Muni, who had performed

austerities for sixty-thousand years, spoke to him.

çré-jäjalir uväca—Çré Jäjali said; vaivasvata-antare—in

the Vaivasvata-manvantara; präpte—attained;

hi—indeed; añöa-viàçatime—in the twennty-eighth;

yuge—yuga; dväpara—of the Dväpara-yuga; ante—at the

end; bhärate—in Bhärata-varña; api—also;

mäthure—in Mathurä; vraja-maëòale—in the circle of Vraja.

Çré Jäjali said: In the Vaivasvata-manvantara, in the

twenty-eighth yuga-cycle, at the end of Dväpara-yuga, in Bhärata-

varña, in Mathurä, in the circle of Vraja, . . .

paripürëatamaù säkñäc

chré-kåñëo bhagavän svayam

våndävane gaväà vatsäàç

cärayan vicariñyati

paripürëatamaù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

säkñäc—directly; chré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; bhagavän—the

Lord; svayam—Himself våndävane—in Våndävana; gaväm—of

cows; vatsän—calves; cärayan—herding;

vicariñyati—will walk.

. . . Çré Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, will herd

many calves in Våndävana forest.

tadä tan-mayataà kåñëe

yäsyasi tvaà na saàçayaù

hiranyäkñädayo daityäù

vaireëäpi paraà gatäù

tadä—then; tan-mayatam—the state of being of them; kåñëe—in Kåñëa; yäsyasi—you will attain;

tvam—you; na—no; saàçayaù—doubt; hiranyäkña-

ädayaù—headed by Biranyakas; daityäù—demons;

vaireëa—with hatred; api—even; param—the Supreme; gatäù—attained.

Then you will enter into Lord Kåñëa. Of this there is no

doubt. Even by hating Him, many demons, such as Hiraëyäkña, have

already attained the Supreme.

itthaà bakäsuro daitya

utkalo jäjaler varät

çré-kåñëe lénatäà präptaù

sat-saìgät kià na jäyate

ittham—thus; bakäsuraù—Bakäsura; daitya—the

demon; utkalaù—Utkala; jäjaleù—of Jäjali;

varät—from the blessing; çré-kåñëe—in Çré Kåñëa;

lénatäm—entrance; präptaù—attained; sat—of great

saints; saìgät—from the association; kim—what?; na—not; jäyate—is born.

In this way, by Jäjali's blessing, the demon Utkala became

Bakäsura and entered into Çré Kåñëa. What is not possible by the

association of great saints?
