Räsa-kréòä

The Räsa-dance Pastime

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

atha kåñëo harir väri-

Çré Närada said: After enjoying water pastimes, handsome Lord Kåñëa went with the gopés to Govardhana Hill.

govardhane kandaräyäà

ratna-bhümyäà hariù svayam

govardhane—on Govardhana Hill; kandaräyäm—in a cave; ratna-bhümyäm—in a jeweled place; hariù—Kåñëa; svayam—personally; räsam—rasa dance; ca—and; rädhayä—Rädhä; särdham—with; räseçvaryä—the queen of the rasa dance; cakära—did; ha—certainly.

On Govardhana Hill, in a cave where the ground was made of jewels, Lord Kåñëa enjoyed a räsa dance with Rädhä, the queen of the räsa dance.

tatra siàhäsane ramye

tasthatuù puñpa-saìkule

taòid-ghaëäv iva girau

rädhä-kåñëau virejatuù

tatra—there; siàhäsane—on a throne; ramye—beautiful; tasthatuù—stayed; puñpa-saìkule—filled with flowers; taòit—lightning; ghaëau—and a cloud; iva—like; girau—on a hill; rädhä-kåñëau—Rädhä and Kåñëa; virejatuù—shone.

Sitting on a flower throne, Çré Çré Rädhä and Kåñëa shone like a monsoon cloud and lightning on the hill.

sväminyäs tatra çåìgäraà

cakruù sakhyo mudänvitaù

çrékhaëòa-kuìkumädyaiç ca

yävakäguru-kajjalaiù

sväminyäù—of their mistress; tatra—there; çåìgäram—decoration; cakruù—did; sakhyaù—the friends; mudänvitaù—happy; çrékhaëòa—sandal; kuìkuma—kunkuma; ädyaiù—beginning with; ca—and; yävaka—yavaka; aguru—aguru; kajjalaiù—and kajjala.

There the happy gopé friends decorated their queen, Rädhä, with sandal, kuìkuma, yävaka, aguru, and kajjala.

makarandaiù kérti-sutäà

samabhyarcya vidhänataù

dadau çré-yamunä säkñäd

rädhäyai nüpuräëy alam

makarandaiù—with honey; kérti-sutäm—Kérti's daughter; samabhyarcya—Rädhä; vidhänataù—according to custom; dadau—gave; çré-yamunä—Çré Yamunä; säkñät—directly; rädhäyai—to Rädhä; nüpuräëy—anklebells; alam—greatly.

The gopés worshiped Kérti's daughter Rädhä with offerings of honey. Çré Yamunä gave nüpura anklets to Her.

maïjéra-bhüñaëam—manjira anklets; divyam—splendid; çré-gaìgä—Çré Gaìgä; jahnu-nandiné—the daughter of Jahnu Muni; çré-ramä—Çré Ramä; kiìkiëé-jälam—a network of tinkling ornaments; häram—a necklace; çré-madhu-mädhavé—Çré Madhumädhavé.

Çré Gaìgä gave splendid maïjéra anklets, Çré Ramä gave a network of tinkling ornaments, and Madhumädhavé gave a necklace.

candra-häraà ca virajä

koöi-candrämalaà çubham

lalitä kaïcuka-maëià

viçäkhä kaëöha-bhüñaëam

candra-häram—a necklace of candrakänta jewels; ca—and; virajä—Viarajä; koöi-candrämalam—splendid as millions of moons; çubham—beautiful; lalitä—Lalitä; kaïcuka—bodice; maëim—jewels; viçäkhä—Viçakhä; kaëöha-bhüñaëam—ornament for the neck.

Virajä gave a beautiful candrakänta necklace splendid as millions of moons, Lalitä gave a jewel bodice, and Viçäkhä gave a neck ornament.

aìguléyaka-ratnäni

dadau candränanä tadä

ekädaçé rädhikäyai

ratnäòhyaà kaìkana-dväyäm

aìguléyaka—rings; ratnäni—jewel; dadau—gave; candränanä—Candränanä; tadä—then; ekädaçé—Ekädaçé; rädhikäyai—to Rädhä; ratnäòhyam—opulent with jewels; kaìkana-dväyäm—two bracelets.

Candränanä gave many jewel rings and Ekädaçé gave to Rädhä two bracelets rich with many jewels.

bhuja-kaìkaëa-ratnäni

çatacandränanä dadau

tasya madhumaté säkñät

sphurad-ratnäìgada-dvayam

bhuja-kaìkana—armlets; ratnäni—jewels; çatacandränanä—Çatacandränanä; dadau—gave; tasyai—to Her; madhumaté—Madhumaté; säkñät—directly; sphurat—glittering; ratna—jewel; aìgada—armlets; dvayam—two.

Çatacandränanä gave many jewel bhuja-kaìkaëa armlets, and Madhumaté gave a pair of glittering aìgada armlets.

täöaìka-yugalaà bandé

kuëòale sukha-däyiné

änandé yä sakhé mukhyä

rädhäyai bhäla-toraëam

täöaìka-yugalam—earrings; bandé—bandé; kuëòale—earrings; sukha-däyiné—Sukhadäyiné; änandé—Anandé; yä—who; sakhé—friend; mukhyä—first; rädhäyai—to Rädhä; bhäla-toraëam—an ornament for the forehead.

Bandé gave täöaìka earrings, Sukhadäyiné gave kuëòala earrings, and the close friend Anandé gave a bhäla-toraëa ornament to Rädhä.

padmä sad-bhäla-tilakaà

binduà candrakalä dadau

näsä-mauktikam älolaà

dadau padmavaté saté

padmä—Padmä; sad-bhäla-tilakam—tilaka for the forehead; bindum—drop; candrakalä—Candrakalä; dadau—gave; näsä—nose; mauktikam—pearl; älolam—moving; dadau—gave; padmavaté—Padmavaté; saté—saintly.

Padmä gave beautiful forehead-tilaka, Candrakalä gave a bindu, and Padmavaté gave a nose-pearl that moved to and fro.

bälärka-dyuti-samyuktaà

bhäla-puñpaà manoharam

bälärka—the rising sun; dyuti—splendor; samyuktam—with; bhäla—for the forehead; puñpam—flower; manoharam—beautiful; çré-rädhäyai—to Çré Rädhä; dadau—gave; räjan—O king; candrakäntä—Candrakäntä; sakhé—friend; çubhä—beautiful.

O king, Her beautiful friend Candrakäntä gave Rädhä a charming bhälapuñpa splendid as the rising sun.

Sundaré gave a crest-jewel, Praharñiëé gave a braid-jewel, and Goddess Våndä, the queen of Våndävana, gave candra and sürya ornaments glittering like ten million lightning flashes. Accompanied by brilliantly decorated Rädhä on the king of mountains, Lord Kåñëa shone with great glory. The place on Govardhana Hill where Rädhä was decorated is known as çåìgära-maëòala. Then, accompanied by His beloved gopés, Lord Kåñëa went to the lake Candra-sarovara.

In the water there the Lord enjoyed pastimes with the gopés as the king of elephants enjoys with many female elephants. Then Candra came and offered two sahasra-dala (thousand-petal) lotuses and two beautiful candrakänta jewels to Rädhä and Kåñëa. After gazing at the beauty of Våndävana forest, Kåñëa went to Bähulavana forest, which was filled with a network of flowering vines. Noticing that all the gopés were perspiring, He played the megha-mallära räga (cloud melody) on His flute, and at once many clouds rained fine drops of water. Then a fragrant cool breeze blew, and all the gopés became happy, O king of Videha.

jagur yaçaù çré-murärer

uccais tatra samanvitäù

jaguù—sag; yaçaù—the gloriesd; çré-muräreù—of Çré Kåñëa; uccaiù—loudly; tatra—there; samanvitaù—with; tasmät—from that; tälavanaàto Talavaan; prägäc—went; chré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; rädhikä-patiù—the Lord of Rädhä.

The gopés loudly sang Çré Kåñëa's glories. Then Çré Kåñëa, the Lord of Rädhä, went to Tälavana.

Text 23

räsa-maëòalam ärebhe

gäyan vraja-vadhü-våtaù

tatra gopé-gaëäù sarve

sveda-yuktäs tåñäturäù

räsa-maëòalam—the rasa dance circle; ärebhe—began; gäyan—singing; vraja-vadhü-våtaù—accompanied by the girls of Vraja; tatra—there; gopé-gaëäù—the gopés; sarve—all; sveda-yuktäù—perspiring; tåñä—with thirst; äturäù—afflicted.

Singing, the Lord formed a räsa-dance circle with the girls of Vraja. Then the gopés began to perspire. They were tortured with thirst.

Text 24

ücü räseçvaraà räse

kåtäïjalé-puöäù çanaiù

düraà vai yamunä deva

tåñä jätä paraà hi naù

ücü—said; räseçvaram—to the king of the rasa dance; räse—in the rasa dance; kåtäïjalé-puöäù—with folded hands; çanaiù—slowly; düram—far away; vai—indeed; yamunä—Yamunä; deva—O Lord; tåñä—thirst; jätä—born; param—greatly; hi—indeed; naù—of us.

Folding their hands in the middle of the räsa dance, the gopés slowly said to Lord Kåñëa, the master of the räsa dance: "O Lord, the Yamunä is far away, and we have become very thirsty.

Text 25

kartavyaà bhavatätraiva

räse divyaà manoharam

väräà vihäraà pänaà ca

kariñyämo hare vayam

kartavyam—should be done; bhavatä—by You; atra—here; eva—indeed; räse—in the rasa dance; divyam—splendid; manoharam—beautiful; väräm—water; vihäram—pastimes; pänam—drinking; ca—and; kariñyämaù—do; hare—O Kåñëa; vayam—we.

"O Kåñëa, please do something so that in this räsa dance arena we may drink water and enjoy water pastimes.

Text 26

jagat-kartä pälakas tvaà

saàhärasyäpi näyakaù

tac chrutvä vetra-daëòena

kåñëo bhümià tatäòa ha

jagat-kartä—the creator of the universes; pälakaù—the protector; tvam—You; saàhärasya—of devastation; api—also; näyakaù—the leader; tac—that; çrutvä—hearing; vetra-daëòena—with His stick; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; bhümim—the earth; tatäòa—struck; ha—indeed.

"You are the creator, protector and destroyer of the worlds."

Hearing this, Lord Kåñëa struck the ground with His stick.

Text 27

tadaiva nirgataù çroto

vetra-gaìgeti kathyate

yaj-jala-sparça-mätreëa

brahma-hatyä pramucyate

tatra snatvä naraù ko 'pi

golokaà yäti maithila

tadä—then; eva—indeed; nirgataù—came; çrotaù—a stream; vetra-gaìgä—the Vetra-gaìgä; iti—thus; kathyate—called; yaj-jala—the water of which; sparça—touch; mätreëa—only; brahma-hatyä—the killing of a brähmaëa; pramucyate—one becomes free; tatra—there; snatvä—bathing; naraù—a person; ko 'pi—someone; golokam—to Goloka; yäti—goes; maithila—O king of Mithilä.

At once a stream called the Vetra-gaìgä sprang up. Simply by touching it one becomes free of the sin of killing a brähmaëa. O king of Mithilä, anyone who bathes there goes to Goloka.

gopébhé rädhayä särdhaà

çré-kåñëo bhagavän hariù

väräà vihäraà kåtavän

devo madana-mohanaù

gopébhé—with the gopés; rädhayä—Rädhä; särdham—with; çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; bhagavän—the Lord; hariù—Hari; väräm—water; vihäram—pastimes; kåtavän—did; devaù—the Lord; madana—thena Kämadeva; mohanaù—more charming;

Then Çré Kåñëa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is more charming than Kämadeva, enjoyed water pastimes with Çré Rädhä and the gopés.

tataù kumudvanaà präpto

latä-våndaà manoharam

bhramara-dhvani-samyuktaà

cakre räsaà sakhé-janaiù

tataù—then; kumudvanam—Kumudvana; präptaù—attained; latä-våndam—with many vines; manoharam—beautiful; bhramara—of bees; dhvani—the sound; samyuktam—with; cakre—did; räsam—the rasa dance; sakhé-janaiù—with gopé friends.

Then Çré Kåñëa went to Kumudvana forest, which was filled with the sounds of humming bees, and again He enjoyed the räsa dance with the gopés.

rädhä tatraiva çåìgäraà

çré-kåñëasya cakära ha

puñpair nänä-vidhair dravyaiù

paçyanténäà vrajaukasäm

rädhä—Rädhä; tatra—there; eva—indeed; çåìgäram—decoration; çré-kåñëasya—of Çré Kåñëa; cakära—did; ha—indeed; puñpaiù—with flowers; nänä—various; vidhaiù—kinds; dravyaiù—things; paçyanténäm—looking on; vrajaukasäm—of the residents of Vraja.

Then, as the girls of Vraja looked on, Rädhä decorated Çré Kåñëa with many flowers and ornaments.

Texts 31 and 32

campakodyat-parikaraù

svarëa-yüthé-bhujäìgadaù

sahasra-dala-räjéva-

karëikä-vilasac-chrutiù

mohiné-mäliné-kunda-

ketaké-hära-bhåd dhariù

campaka—campaka; udyat—blossoming; parikaraù—belt; svarëa-yüthé—svarnayuthi; bhujäìgadaù—armlets; sahasra-dala-räjéva—thousand petal lotus; karëikä—whorl; vilasat—splendid; çrutiù—ears; mohiné—mohini; mäliné—malini; kunda—kunda; ketaké—and ketaki; hära—garland; bhåt—wearing; hariù—Kåñëa.

In this way Lord Kåñëa' belt was decorated with campaka flowers, and His armlets with svarëa-yüthé flowers. He wore a garland of mohiné, mäliné, kunda, and ketaké flowers. His ears were made splendid with the whorls of thousand-petal lotuses.

kiréöa-kaöakojjvalaù

mandära-puñpottaréya-

padma-yañöi-dharaù prabhuù

kadamba-puñpa—kadamba flowers; vilasat—splendid; kiréöa—crown; kaöaka—bracelet; ujjvalaù—splendid; mandära—mandara; puñpa—flowers; uttaréya—upper garment; padma—lotus; yañöi—stick; dharaù—holding; prabhuù—the Lord.

Lord Kåñëa's crown and bracelets were made splendid with kadamba flowers, His upper garment was decorated with mandära flowers, and His stick was decorated with lotuses.

O king, then He was decorated with a garland of tulasé-maïjarés and forest flowers. In this way Lord Kåñëa was decorated. Accompanied by His beloved, He was happy and splendid as if He were the Deity of springtime personified. Then, with

mådaìgas, véëäs, flutes, murus, yañöis, and karatälas, the gopés played melodies in three scales of seven notes in the rägas bhairava, megha-mallära, dépaka, mälakoçaka, çré-räga, and hindola.

With many different dances, with amorous gestures, and with sidelong glances the gopés pleased Kåñëa. Then, accompanied by the gopés as He sang Çré Rädhä's glories, Lord Kåñëa, the king of the räsa dance, went to Madhuvana forest, where He enjoyed a räsa dance with Çré Rädhä, the queen of the räsa dance.

In this way, during the month of Vaiçäkha (April-May), in a secluded forest beautiful with flowering mälaté vines and a breeze carrying the fragrance of mälaté flowers and the fragrant pollen of blossoming kahlära lotuses, Lord Kåñëa enjoyed with the gopés as Indra enjoys in the Nandana gardens.
