The Räsa-daïce Pastime

evam—thus; vicintya—considering; manasä—with his heart; çivaù—Lord Çiva; vä—or; äsuriëä—Asuri Muni; saha—with; tau—both; kåñëa—of Lord Kåñëa; daåñëa—the sight; arthäya—for the purpose; jagmatuù—went; vraja-maëòalam—to the circle of Vraja.
Thinking in this way, Çiva and Asuri went to the circle of Vraja to see Lord Kåñëa.

divya—splendid; druma—trees; latä—vines; kuïja—groves; tolikä—archways; pu 24ja—filled; çobhitam—beautified; paçyantau—seeing; tau—they; divya-bhümim—splendid transcendental place; kälindé-nikaöe—near the Yamunä; gatau—went.
Near the Yamunä they went to a splendid transcendental place filled with splendid groves of trees, vines, and archways.

vetra-hastä mahä-baläù
cakrur balät tan-niñedhaà
märga-sthä dvära-pälikäù
goloka-väsinyaù—residing in Goloka; naryaù—women; vetra-hastä—with sticks in their hands; mahä-baläù—very strong; cakruù—did; balät—forcibly; tan-niñedham—forbidding them; märga-sthä—standing on the path; dvära-pälikäù—guarding the entrance.
Many very powerful, stick-wielding women of Goloka guarded the entrance. Blocking the path, they and forbade them to enter.

täv ähur nåpa-çärdüla
märga-sthä dvära-pälikäù
tau ücatuù—they said; ca—and; ägatau—come; svaù—own; kåñëa-darçana-lälasau—yeanring to see Kåñëa; tau—they; ähuù—said; nåpa-çärdüla—O tiger of kings; märga-sthä—standing on the path; dvära-pälikäù—the doorkeepers.
The two of them said, "Yearning to see Lord Kåñëa, we have come here". O tiger of kings, as they blocked the path, the entrance-guards spoke to them.

räsa-rakñäà sadä kurmo

çré-dvära-pälikä ücuù—the gatekeepers said; sarvataù—everywhere; våndakäraëyam—in Våndävana; koöiçaù koöiçaù—in millions and millions; vayam—we; räsa-rakñäm—protecting the rasa dance; sadä—always; kurmaù—do; nyastä—placed; kåñëena—by Lord Kåñëa; bhaù—O; dvijau—brähmaëas.
The entrance guards said: There are many millions of millions of us everywhere in Våndävana. Appointed by Lord Kåñëa, we eternally guard the räsa dance.

gopé-yüthaà vinä kvacit
ekaù—one; asti—is; puruñaù—male; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; nirjane—secluded; räsa-maëòale—in the rasa-dance circle; anyaù—another; na—not; yäti—goes; rahasi—in secret; gopé-yütham—gopés; vinä—without; kvacit—anywhere.
In this secluded räsa-dance circle Kåñëa is the only male. Except for Him there are only gopés here.

snänaà mäna-sarovare
kurutaà tatra gopétvaà
präpyäçu vrajataà muné
cet—if; didåkñü—with a desire to see; yuväm—you; tasya—of Him; snänam—bath; mäna-sarovare—in mana-sarivara lake; kurutam—you will do; tatra—there; gopétvam—status of being gopés; präpya—attaining; äçu—at once; vrajatam—go; muné—O sages.
O sages, if you wish to see Lord Kåñëa, then please bath in the Mäna-sarovara lake. In that way you will become gopés, and then you may enter.

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; ity—thus; uktau—addressed; tau—they; muni-çivau—Asuri Muni and Lord çiva; snätvä—bathing; mäna-sarovare—in mana-sarivaras; gopétvam—the status of gopés; präpya—attaining; sahasä—at once; jagmatü—went; räsa-maëòale—to the rasa dance circle.
Bathing in Mäna-sarovara, and at once becoming gopés, Lord Siva and Asuri Muni went to the circle of the räsa dance.

vasanta-candra-kaumudyä-—with spring moonlight; pradépte—illumined; sarva-kauçale—ausopicious and beautiful; yamunä—to the Yamunä; ratna—jewel; sopäna—stairways; tolikäbhiù—and arches; viräjite—splendid.
. . . filled with all beauty, splendid with spring moonlight, glorious with arches and jewel stairways leading to the Yamunä, . . .

. . . bowing down to the lotus feet of Lord Kåñëa, who in that forest grove was splendid as as ten million moons, who was decorated by lotuslike, swan-graceful Çré Rädhä's company, who, surrounded by jewellike women, eternally stayed the middle of the räsa-dance circle, who was handsome as ten million Kämadevas, whose form was dark and handsome, who was dressed in yellow garments, who held a flute and stick in His hand, who bore the mark of Çrévatsa, who was decorated with the Kaustubha gem, who was splendid with a forest garland, who was decorated with tinkling anklets, belt, and armlets, and with necklaces, bracelets, and earrings splendid as two rising suns, who wore a crown splendid as ten million suns, who with generous sidelong glances stole the gopés' hearts, and whom the gopés gazed at from afar, Lord Çiva and Asuri Muni, now overcome with happiness, spoke.

The two of them said: O Kåñëa, O Kåñëa, O great yogé, O master of the demigods, O Lord of the universes, O lotus-eyed one, O Govinda, O Lord who carries a flag with the emblem of Garuòa, obeisances to You!

janärdana—O savior from miseries; jagannätha—O mastre of the universes; padmanäbha—O lotus-naveled one; trivikrama—O Lord who took three steps; dämodara—O Lord bound at the waist by a rope; håñékeça—O master of the sense; väsudeva—O son of Vasudeva; namaù—obeisances; astu—are; te—to You.
O savior from miseries, O Lord of the universes, O lotus-naveled one, O Lord who took three steps, O Lord bound at the waist with a rope, O master of the senses, O son of King Vasudeva, obeisances to You!

bhü-bhüri-bhära-haraëäya satäà çubhäya

adya—toady; eva—indeed; deva—O Lord; paripürëatamaù—supremely perfe4ct; tu—indeed; säkñät—directly; bhü-bhüri-bhära—the great burden of the earth; haraëäya—to remove; satäm—of the devotees; çubhäya—for the welfare; präptaù—attained; asi—You are; nanda-bhavane—in Nanda's home; parataù—than the greatest; paraù—greater; tvam—You; kåtvä—having done; hi—indeed; sarva-nija-lokam—qll Your planets; açeña-çünyam—completely void.
O Supreme Personality of Godhead, leaving all Your transcendental abodes and making them devoid of Your presence, You have now come to Nanda's home to remove the earth's great burden and to bring auspiciousness to Your devotees.

aàça-aàçaka-aàça-kalayä—with a part of a part of a part of a part; abhiruta—said; abhirämam—delightful; äveça-pürëa-nicayäbhiù—with avesa incvarnations; atéva—greatly; yuktaù—endowed; viçvam—universe; bibharñi—maintain; rasa-räsam—the sweet rasa dance; alaìkaroñi—decorate; våndävanam—Våndävana; ca—and; paripürëatamaù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; svayam—personally; tvam—You.
You are the original and perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, glorious with incarnations that display a part, a part of a part, or a part of a part of a part of Your power. With Your many empowered inacarnations You maintain the universe. With the sweet räsa dance You decorate the forest of Våndävana.

You are decorated with beautiful flowers taken from Våndävana's vines. You are the ornament Çré Rädhä wears on Her neck and over Her heart. You are the master of the räsa-dance circle. You are the master of the circle of Vraja. You are the protector of the circle of the universes.

Çré Närada said: Pleased and gently smiling as He stood by Çré Rädhä's side, with words like thunder Lord Kåñëa spoke to the sage.

çañöi-varña-sahasräëi
yuvayos tapatos tapaù
mad-darçanaà tena jätaà
sarvato nairapekñayoù
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; çañöi-varña-sahasräëi—sixty-thousand years; yuvayoù—of you both; tapatoù—austerities; tapaù—austerities; mad-darçanam—to see Me; tena—by that; jätam—produced; sarvataù—everywhere; nairapekñayoù—renounced.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Renouncing everything, the two of you performed austerities for sixty-thousand years in order to see Me.

niñkiïcano yo çäntaç cä-
jäta-çatruù sa mat-sakhä
tasmäd yuväbhyäà manasä
vriyatäm épsito varaù
niñkiïcanaù—with no material wealth; yaù—one who; çäntaù—peaceful; ca—and; ajäta—not born; çatruù—enemies; sa—he; mat-sakhä—My friend; tasmät—from that; yuväbhyäm—of you both; manasä—with the heart; vriyatäm—may be chosen; épsitaù—desired; varaù—benediction.
You do not crave material wealth, you are peaceful, you do not think anyone your enemy, and you are my friends. Therefore, please choose a benediction. Choose whatever your hearts desire.

namo yuväbhyäà hari-rädhikäbhyäm
çiväsuré ücatuù—Lord Sivaand Asuri Muni said; namaù—obeisances; astu—are; bhüman—O Lord; yuvayoù—of You; padäbje—at the lotus feet; sadä—eternally; eva—indeed; våndävana-madhya-väsa-—O Lord who resides in Våndävana; na—not; rocate—pleases; naù—not; anyam—another; ataù—therefore; tvad-aìghreù—of Your feet; namaù—obeisances; yuväbhyäm—to You both; hari-rädhikäbhyäm—Çré Çré Rädhä-Kåñëa.
Lord Çiva and Asuri Muni said: O Lord who resides in Våndävana, we eternally offer our obeisances to Your lotus feet. Nothing other than Your lotus feet gives us any happiness. O Çré Çré Rädhä-Kåñëa, we offer our respectful obeisances to You!

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; tathästu—so be it; ca—and; uktvä—saying; bhagavän—the Lord; våndäraëye—in Våndävana; manohare—beautiful; kälindé-nikaöe—near the Yamunä; räjan—O king; räsa-maëòala-maëòite—decorated by the circle of the rasa dance; nikuïja-pärçve—in the side of the forest; puline—on the shore; vaàçévaöa-samépataù—near Vamsivata; çivaù—Lord Çiva; api—and; ca—and; äsuri-muniù—Asuri Muni; nityam—eternally; väsam—residence; cakära—did; ha—indeed.
The Lord then said, "So be it." From that moment Lord Çiva and Asuri Muni made their residence there, at Vaàçévaöa, where the forest grove by the Yamunä's shore is decorated with the circle of the räsa dance.

patat-sugandhi-rajasi
gopébhir bhramaräkule
atha—then; kåñëaù—Lord Kåñëa; räsa-léläm—rasa dance pastime; cakre—did; padmäkare—in Padmäkara; vane—forest; patat-sugandhi-rajasi—filled with fragrant pollen; gopébhiù—with the gopés; bhramara-äkule—filled with bees.
Then Lord Çré Kåñëa enjoyed a räsa dance with the gopés in Padmäkara forest, which was filled with buzzing bees and fragrant flower pollen.

evaà ñaë-mäsiké ratriù
kåtä kåñëena maithila
gopénäà räsa-léläyäà
vyatétä kñaëavat sukhaiù
evam—thus; ñaë-mäsiké—six months; ratriù—night; kåtä—done; kåñëena—with Kåñëa; maithila—O kin gof Mithilä; gopénäm—of the gopés; räsa-léläyäm—in the rasa pastime; vyatétä—passed; kñaëavat—like a moment; sukhaiù—happily.
O king of Mithilä, although in truth it lasted for six months, the night Lord Kåñëa enjoyed the räsa dance with the gopés seemed to Them only a single moment of great happiness when it was over.

sva-gåhän vraja-yoñitaù
yüthé-bhütvä yayü räjan
sarväù pürëa-manorathäù
aruëodaya-veläyäm—at sunrise; sva-gåhän—to their own homes; vraja-yoñitaù—the girls of Vraja; yüthé-bhütvä—becoming groups; yayuù—went; räjan—O king; sarväù—all; pürëa—fulfilled; manorathäù—desires.
At sunrise all the gopés, their desires fulfilled, returned to their homes.

våñabhänu-sutä tvaram
çré-nanda-mandiram—Çré Nanda's palace; säkñät—directly; präyayau—went; nanda-nandanaù—Kåñëa; våñabhänu-puram—to King Våñabhänu's palace; prägät—went; våñabhänu-sutä—Rädhä; tvaram—quickly.
Lord Kåñëa went to Nanda's palace and Çré Rädhä hurried to King Våñabhänu's palace.

Thus I have described to You Çré Kåñëacandra's beautiful and sacred räsa dance, which removes all sins, fulfills all desires, brings auspiciousness, gives to the people the three goals of life, and gives to they who yearn for liberation the highest kind of liberation. What more do you wish to hear?
