O king, walking in the gopés' company in beautiful Kundavana forest, past many beautiful groves of mälaté, mango, orange, lime, pomegranate, grape, badämäna, kadamba, çréphala, kuöaja, banyan, panasa, pippala, tulasé, kovidära, ketaké, kadalé, karilla, bakula, and mandära, Lord Kåñëa came to Kämavana forest.

tatraiva parvate kåñëo

nanäda muralé-kalam

murcchitä vihvalä jätäs

tan-nädena vrajäìganäù

tatra—there; eva—indeed; parvate—on the hill; kåñëaù—Lord Kåñëa; nanäda—enjoyed; muralé-kalam—the sweet sound of the flute; murcchitä—fainted; vihvalä—overcome; jätäù—manifested; tan-nadena—by that sound; vrajäìganäù—the girls of Vraja.

On a hill there Lord Kåñëa sweetly played the flute. That music made the girls of Vraja faint.

manoja-bäëa-bhinnäìgäù

çlathan-névyaù suraiù saha

kaçmalaà präyayu räjan

vimäneñv amaräìganäù

manoja—of Kämadeva; bäëa—by the arrow; bhinnäìgäù—wounded; çlathan—loosened; névyaù—belts; suraiù—the demigods; saha—with; kaçmalam—fainting; präyayu—attained; räjan—O king; vimäneñu—in airplanes; amaräìganäù—the demigoddesses.

O king, wounded by Kämadeva's arrows, and their tight belts now loosened, the demigoddesses also fainted because of that music as they flew in airplanes with the demigods.

catur-vidhä jéva-saìghäù

sthavarair moham ästhitäù

nadyo nadäù sthiré-bhütäù

parvatä dravatäà gatäù

catuù—four; vidhäù—kinds; jéva-saìghäù—living entities; sthavaraiù—with immobile living entities; moham—fainting; ästhitäù—attained; nadyaù—the rivers; nadäù—streams; sthiré-bhütäù—stunned; parvatä—the hills; dravatäm—melting; gatäù—attained.

Because of that music the four kinds of moving and unmoving living entities fainted, the rivers and streams became stunned, and the hills and mountains melted.

tat-päda-cihna-samyukto

giriù kämavane 'bhavat

tasya darçana-mätreëa

naro yäti kåtärthatäm

tat-päda-cihna-samyuktaù—endowed with His footprints; giriù—the hill; kämavane—in Kämavana forest; abhavat—became; tasya—of Him; darçana-mätreëa—simply by the sight; naraù—a person; yäti—goes; kåtärthatäm—to success.

That hill in Kämavana became decorated with Lord Kåñëa's footprints. Simply by seeing that hill one attains the goal of life.

atha gopé-gaëaiù säkaà

çré-kåñëo rädhikä-patiù

nandéçvara-båhat-sänu-

taöe räsaà cakära ha

atha—then; gopé-gaëaiù—the gopés; säkam—with; çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; rädhikä-patiù—the master of Rädhä; nandéçvara—of Nandéçvara Hill; båhat-sänu-taöe—on the great summit; räsam—a rasa dance; cakära—did; ha—indeed.

Then Çré Kåñëa, the Lord of Rädhä, enjoyed a räsa dance with the gopés on the great peak of Nandéçvara Hill.

Text 10

tatra gopyo 'ti-mäninyo

babhüvur maithileçvara

täs tyaktvä rädhayä särdhaà

tatraiväntardadhe hariù

tatra—there; gopyaù—the gopés; ati-mäninyaù—very proud; babhüvuù—became; maithileçvara—O king of Mithilä; täù—them; tyaktvä—abandoning; rädhayä—Rädhä; särdham—with; tatra—there; eva—indeed; antardadhe—disappeared; hariù—Kåñëa.

O king of Mithilä, at that time the gopés became very proud, so Lord Kåñëa left them. He disappeared with Rädhä.

gopyaç ca sarvä virahäturä bhåçäà

kåñëaà vinä maithila nirjane vane

tä babhramuç cäçru-kuläkuläkñyo

yathä hariëyaç cakitä itas tataù

gopyaù—the gopés; ca—and; sarvä—all; virahäturä—overcome with feelings of separation; bhåçäm—greatly; kåñëam—Kåñëa; vinä—without; maithila—O king of Mithilä; nirjane—in a secluded; vane—forest; tä—they; babhramuù—wandering; cäçru-kuläkuläkñyaù—their eyes filled with tears; yathä—as; hariëyaù—does; cakitäù—frightened; itaù tataù—here and there.

O king of Mithilä, separated from Kåñëa, the gopés were overcome with sorrow. Their eyes filled with tears, they wandered here and there in the forest wilderness as if they were frightened deer.

kåñëaà hy apaçyantya iti vyathäà gatä

yathä kariëyaù kariëaà vane vane

yathä kuraryaù kuraraà vrajäìganäù

sarvä rudantyo virahäturä bhåçäm

kåñëam—Kåñëa; hy—indeed; apaçyantya—not seeing; iti—thus; vyathäm—distress; gatä—attained; yathä—as; kariëyaù—femnale elephants; kariëam—to a male elephant; vane vane—in forest after forest; yathä—as; kuraryaù—female kurari birds; kuraram—to a male kurari bird; vrajäìganäù—the girls of Vraja; sarvä—all; rudantyaù—crying; virahäturä—overcome with separation; bhåçäm—greatly.

Not seeing Kåñëa anywhere, they became filled with sorrow. They became like female elephants that cannot find their mate or kuraré birds that cannot find their husband. Separated from Kåñëa, all the girls of Vraja wept.

unmattavad våkña-latä-kadambakaà

sarvä militvä ca påthag vane vane

papracchur ärän nåpa nanda-nandanaà

kutra sthitaà taà vadatäçu bhüruhäù

unmatta—mad; vat—like; våkña—trees; latä—and vines; kadambakam—many; sarvä—all; militvä—meeting; ca—and; påthag—specififc; vane vane—forest after forest; papracchuù—asked; ärät—nearby; nåpa—O king; nanda-nandanam—the son of Nanda; kutra—where; sthitam—situated; tam—Him; vadata—please tell; äçu—at once; bhüruhäù—O trees.

O king, in forest after forest they approached the trees and vines and asked, as if they had become mad, "Where is the son of Nanda? O trees and plants, please tell us."

çré-kåñëa kåñëeti girä vadantyaù

çré-kåñëa-pädämbuja-lagna-mänasäù

çré-kåñëa-rüpäs tu babhüvur aìganäs

citraà na peças-kåtam etya kéöa-vat

çré-kåñëa—O Çré Kåñëa; kåñëa—O Kåñëa; iti—thus; girä—with words; vadantyaù—speaking; çré-kåñëa—of Çré Kåñëa; päda—feel; ambuja—lotus; lagna—attached; mänasäù—hearts and minds; çré-kåñëa-rüpäù—Çré Kåñëa's form; tu—indeed; babhüvuù—became; aìganäù—the girls; citram—wonder; na—not; peças-kåtam—the form; etya—attaining; kéöa-vat—like an insect.

The girls called out, "O Çré Kåñëa! O Kåñëa!" their hearts paasionately attached to Çré Kåñëa's lotus feet. Then they pretended to have become Kåñëa. This is not surprising. They were like bumblebees attracted to Çré Kåñëa's glory.

çré-pädukädhaù-sthala-gopé-gopyaù

çré-pädukäbjaà çaraëaà präpannäù

çré-päduka—the feet; adhaù—below; sthala—place; gopi-gopyaù—gopés; çré-pädukäbjam—to the lotus feet; çaraëam—surrender; präpannäù—attained.

Approaching Kåñëa's footprints on the ground, the gopés surrendered to His lotus feet.

tatas tu tat-prasädena

tat-padärcana-darçanät

dadåçur gäà tadä gopyo

bhagavat-päda-cihnitäm

tataù—then; tu—indeed; tat-prasädena—by His mercy; tat—His; pada—feet; arcana—worship; darçanät—because of seeing; dadåçuù—saw; gäm—the earth; tadä—then; gopyaù—the gopés; bhagavat-päda-cihnitäm—marked with the footprints of the Lord.

When He saw them worship His feet, the Lord became merciful. For this reason the gopés were able to see a place marked with the Lord's footprints.

çré-bahuläçva uväca

rädheço rädhayä särdhaà

hitvä gopér yayau kva bhoù

tad-darçanaà kathaà jätaà

gopénäà vada me prabho

çré-bahuläçva uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said; rädheçaù—the master oif Rädhä; rädhayä—Rädhä; särdham—with; hitvä—abandoniung; gopéù—teh gs; yayau—went; kva—where?; bhoù—O; tad-darçanam—by His sight; katham—how?; jätam—attained; gopénäm—of th4e gopés; vada—tell; me—me; prabhaù—O lord.

Çré Bahuläçva said: When He left the gopés, where did Kåñëa take Rädhä? How did the gopés again see Kåñëa? O lord, please tell me.

çré-närada uväca

çré-kåñëo rädhayä särdhaà

saìketa-vaöam äviçat

priyäyäù kabaré-puñpa-

racanaà sa cakära ha

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; rädhayä—Rädhä; särdham—with; saìketa-vaöam—a banyan-forest rendezvous; äviçat—entered; priyäyäù—of His beloved; kabaré-puñpa—kabari flowers; racanam—making; sa—He; cakära—did; ha—indeed.

Çré Närada said: Kåñëa and Rädhä entered a banyan forest. There Kåñëa decorated His beloved with kabaré flowers.

çré-kåñëa-kuntale néle

vakratvaà rädhikäkarot

citra-paträvaléù kåñëa-

pürëendu-mukha-maëòale

çré-kåñëa—of Çré Kåñëa; kuntale—on the hair; néle—black; vakratvam— curliness; rädhikä—Rädhä; akarot—did; citra-paträvaléù—many wonderful pictures and designs; kåñëa—of Kåñëa; pürëa—full; indu—moon; mukha—face; maëòale—on the circle.

There Rädhä made curls on Kåñëa's black hair and wonderful pictures and designs on the circle of His full-moon face.

evaà kåñëo bhadravanaà

khadiräëäà vanaà mahat

bilvänäà ca vanaà paçyan

kokiläkhyaà vanaà gataù

evam—thus; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; bhadravanam—to Bhadravana; khadiräëäà vanam—Khadiravaan; mahat—great; bilvänäm—Bilvavana; ca—and; vanam—forest; paçyan—seeing; kokiläkhyam—named Kokila; vanam—the forest; gataù—went.

Then, gazing at the great forests Bhadravana, Khadiravana, and Bilvavana as He went, Kåñëa entered the forest named Kokilavana.

dadåçus tat-padäni ca

yava-cakra-dhvaja-cchatraiù

svastikäìkuça-bindubhiù

gopyaù—the gopés; kåñëam—for Kåñëa; vicinvantyaù—searching; dadåçuù—saw; tat-padäni—His footprints; ca—and; yava—with the barleycorn; cakra—cakra; dhvaja—flag; chatraiù—and parasol; svastika—svastika; aìkuça—elephant-goad; bindubhih—_—and bindus;

As they searched for Kåñëa, the gopés found His footprints marked with a barleycorn, cakra, flag, parasol, svastika, elephant-goad, bindu, . . .

añöa-koëena—eight-pointed star; vajreëa—thunderbolt; padmena—lotus; abhiyutäni—endowed; ca—and; nélaçaìkha—conchshell; ghaöaiù—waterpot; matsya—fish; tri-koëa—tirangle; iñu—arrow; ürdhva-dhärakaiùurdhva-rekha line.

. . . bow, cow's hoofprint, and half-moon. As the gopés followed the Supreme Lord's footprints, . . .

. . . and as they again and again took the dust from those footprints and placed it to their heads, the girls of Vraja saw another set of footprints marked with different signs, . . .

siàhäsana—throne; rathäbhyäm—chariot; ca—and; bindu-dvaya-yutäni—with two bindus; ca—and; vékñya—seeing; prähü—said; rädhikayä—with Rädhä; gataù—gone; asau—He; nanda-nandanaù—the son of Nanda.

. . . throne, chariot, and two bindus. O king, looking at these wonderful footprints, the gopés said, "The son of Nanda has come here in Rädhä's company."

kokiläkhyaà vanaà gatäù

gopé-kolähalaà çrutvä

rädhikäà präha mädhavaù

paçyantyaù—lloking; tat-päda-padmam—lotus feet; kokiläkhyam—named Kokila; vanam—the forest; gatäù—gone; gopé—of the gopés; kolähalam—the tumult; çrutvä—hearing; rädhikäm—to Rädhä; präha—said; mädhavaù—Kåñëa.

The gopés followed these lotus footprints into Kokilavana forest. When He heard the tumultous sounds of the gopés as they came, Kåñëa said to Rädhä:

tväà neñyanti hi sarvataù

koöi—millions; candra—of moons; pratékäçe—glory; rädhe—O Rädhä; sarpa—go; tvaram—quickly; priye—O beloved; ägatä—come; gopikäù—the gopés; sarväù—all; tväm—You; neñyanti—will lead; hi—indeed; sarvataù—in all respects.

O Rädhä, O beloved, O girl splendid as ten million moons, go quickly, All these gopés have come to take You from Me.

rüpa-yauvana-kauçalya-

çéla-garva-samanvitä

tadä—then; mänavaté—proud; rädhä—Rädhä; bhütvä—becoming; präha—said; ramä-patim—to Kåñëa, the master of the goddess of fortune; rüpa—beauty; yauvana—youth; kauçalya—intelligence; çéla—good character; garva—pride; samanvitä—with.

Then Rädhä, feeling proud of Her beauty, youthfulness, intelligence, and good character, spoke to Lord Kåñëa, the husband of the goddess of fortune.

calituà na samarthähaà

mandirän na vinirgatä

sukumäré sveda-yuktä

kathaà mäà nayasi priya

çré-rädhä uväca—Çré Rädhä said; calitum—to move; na—not; samarthä—able; aham—I am; mandirän—from the palace; na—not; vinirgatä—come; sukumäré—delicate; sveda-yuktä—perspiring; katham—how?; mäm—Me; nayasi—You will lead; priya—O beloved.

I cannot move. I cannot leave this palace. I am only a delicate girl. I am perspiring. O beloved, how can You lead Me away from here?

iti väkyaà tataù çrutvä

çré-kåñëo rädhikeçvaraù

pétämbareëa divyena

väyuà tasyai cakära ha

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; iti—thus; väkyam—words; tataù—then; çrutvä—hearing; çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; rädhikeçvaraù—the master of Rädhä; pétämbareëa—with His yellow garments; divyena—transcendental; väyum—a breeze; tasyai—to Her; cakära—did; ha—indeed;

Hearing these words, Çré Kåñëa, the master of Rädhä, made for Her a breeze by fanning Her with His yellow garments.

hastaà gåhétvä täm äha

gaccha rädhe yathä-sukham

kåñëenäpi tadä proktä

na yayau tena vai punaù

hastam—hand; gåhétvä—taking; täm—to Her; äha—said; gaccha—go; rädhe—O Rädhä; yathä-sukham—as You wish; kåñëena—in a moment; api—also; tadä—ten; proktä—addressed; na—not; yayau—went; tena—with Him; vai—indeed; punaù—again.

Then Kåñëa took Her hand and said, "O Rädhä, walk as

fast You like." Even though Kåñëa said this, still Rädhä did not move.

påñöhaà dattvätha haraye

tüñëém-bhütä sthitä punaù

priyäà mänavatéà rädhäà

präha kåñëaà satäà priyaù

påñöham—back; dattvä—giving; atha—then; haraye—to Lord Kåñëa; tüñëém-bhütä—silent; sthitä—standing; punaù—again; priyäm—to His beloved; mänavatém—proud; rädhäm—Rädhä; präha—said; kåñëaù——Lord Kåñëa; satäm—of the devotees; priyaù—the beloved.

Turning Her back to Kåñëa, Rädhä stood silent. Then Kåñëa, who is dear to the saintly devotees, spoke to His proud beloved Rädhä.

çré-bhagavän uväca

vihäya gopér iha kämayänä

bhajämy ahaà mänini cetasä tvam

yat te priyaà tat prakaromi rädhe

me skandham äruhya sukhaà vrajäçu

çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; vihäya—abandoning; gopéù—the gopés; iha—here; käma—desire; yänä—going; bhajämy—worship; aham—I; mänini—O proud one; cetasä—with the mind; tvam—You; yat—what; te—of You; priyam—dear; tat—that; prakaromi—I will do; rädhe—O Rädhä; me—of Me; skandham—on the shoulders; äruhya—climbing; sukham—easily; vraja—go; äçu—quickly.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Let us leave behind these gopés that wish to come with Us. O noble girl, I worship You with all My heart. O Rädhä, I will do whatever You wish. Climb on My shoulders and You will quickly and easily flee from them.

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; evam—thus; priyäm—dear; priyatamaù—most dear; skandha—on the shoulders; yäna—traveling; ipsitäm—desired; nåpa—O king; vihäya—leaving; antardadhe—disappeared; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; svacchanda-gatiù—independent; éçvaraù—Supreme Controller.

Çré Närada said: O king, as Rädhä was about to climb His shoulders, Lord Kåñëa, the supremely independent Personality of Godhead suddenly disappeared.

gata—gone; mänä—pride; kérti-sutä—the daughter of Kérti; bhagavat—from the Lord; viraha—with separation; äturä—distressed; uccai—loudly; ruroda—cried; räjendra—O king of kings; kokiläkhye—named Kokila; vane—in the forest; pare—great.

Distressed by Kåñëa's departure, and Her pride now gone, Rädhä loudly wept in Kokilavana forest.

gopénäà maithileçvarä

tad-rodanaà duùkhataraà

çrutvä jagmus tapäturäù

O king of Mithilä, when the gopés came and heard Rädhä's

sorrowful weeping they also became filled with sorrow.

käçcit—some; täm—Her; makarandaiù—with honey; ca—and; snäpayäà cakruù—bathed; éçvarém—the goddess; candana—with sandal; aguru—aguru; kastüré—musk; kuìkuma—saffron; drava—liquid; sékaraiù—with drops.

Some gopés showered Her with a spray of honey, sandal, aguru, musk, and saffron.

vyajanändola-cämaraiù

äçväsya vägbhiù paramaà

nänänunaya-kovidaiù

väyum—a breeze; cakruù—did; tad-aìgeñu—on Her limbs; vyajana—fans; ändola—moving; cämaraiù—with cämaras; äçväsya—comforting; vägbhiù—with words; paramam—greatly; nänä—various; anunaya—comforting words; kovidaiù—expert.

tan-mukhät—from the face; mäninaù—proud; mänam—pride; çrutvä—hearing; kåñëasya—of Kåñëa; gopikäù—the gopés; mänavantyaù—proud; maithilendra—O king of Mithilä; vismayam—astonishment; paramam—great; yayuù—attained.

O king of Mithilä, when they heard from Her mouth how arrogant Kåñëa treated Her badly, the proud gopés were astonished.
