Ayodhyä-pura-väsiny-upäkhyäna
The Story of the Ayodhyä Women
Text 1
çré-närada uväca
evam uktvä gate säkñäd
yäjïavalkye mahä-munau
atéva harñam äpanno
vimalaç campakä-patiù
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; evam—thus;
uktvä—speaking; gate—gone; säkñät—directly;
yäjïavalkye—Yajnavalkya; mahä-munau—the great
sage; atéva—great; harñam—happiness;
äpannaù—attained; vimalaù—Vimala; campakä-patiù—the
king of Campaka.
Sré Närada said: Then the great sage Yäjïavalkya
left. Vimala, the king of Campakä, was very happy.

ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù
çré-rämasya varäc ca yäù
babhüvus tasya bhäryäsu
täù sarväù kanyakäù çubhäù
ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù—the women of Ayodhyä; çré-
rämasya—of Sré Räma; varät—frokm the benediction;
ca—and; yäù—who; babhüvuù—became; tasya—of
him; bhäryäsu—in the wives; täù—they;
sarväù—all; kanyakäù—daughters; çubhäù—beautiful.
Then the Ayodhyä women blessed by Lord Rämacandra took birth
as the very beautiful daughters of Vimala and his wives.

viväha-yogyäs tä dåñövä
cintayaàç campakä-patiù
yäjïavalkya-vacaù småtvä
dütam äha nåpeçvaraù
viväha-yogyäù—at the proper age for marriage;
tä—they; dåñövä—seeing; cintayan—thinking;
campakä-patiù—the king of Campakä; yäjïavalkya-
vacaù—the words of Yajnavalkya; småtvä—remembering;
dütam—to give; äha—said; nåpeçvaraù—the great king.
Seeing that his daughters had come to a marriagable age, and
remembering Yäjïavalkya's words, King Vimala spoke.

mathuräà gaccha düta tvaà
gatvä çauri-gåhaà çubham
darçanéyäs tvayä putro
vasudevasya sundaraù
çré-vimala uväca—Sré Vimala said; mathuräm—to
Mathurä; gaccha—go; düta—O messenger;
tvam—you; gatvä—having gone; çauri—of Vasudeva;
gåham—to tyhe home; çubham—beautiful;
darçanéyaù—should be seen; tvayä—by you; putraù—the
son; vasudevasya—of Vasudeva; sundaraù—handsome.
Sré Vimala said: O messenger, go to Mathurä, enter
Vasudeva's palace, and look for Vasudeva's handsome son.

çrévatsäìko ghana-çyämo
vana-mälé catur-bhujaù
yadi syät tarhi däsyämi
tasmai sarväù su-kanyakäù
çrévatsäìkaù—marked with Srévatsa; ghana-çyämaù—dark as
a cloud; vana-mälé—wearing a forest garland; catur-
bhujaù—with four arms; yadi—if; syät—is;
tarhi—then; däsyämi—I will give; tasmai—to Him;
sarväù—all; su-kanyakäù—my beautiful daughters.
He is dark as a monsoon cloud, has four arms, is marked with
Srévatsa, and wears a forest garland. If He is there, I will give
Him all my beautiful daughters.

iti väkyaà tataù çrutvä
düto 'sau mathuräà gataù
papraccha sarväbhipräyaà
mäthuräàç ca mahäjanän
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; iti—thus;
väkyam—the words; tataù—then; çrutvä—hearing;
dütaù—the messenger; asau—he; mathuräm—to Mathurä; gataù—went; papraccha—asked; sarväbhipräyam—all
knowledge; mäthurän—the people of Mathurä;
ca—and; mahäjanän—great souls.
Sré Närada said: Hearing these words, and going to Mathurä,
the messenger asked the great souls there if they had seen
Vasudeva's son.

tad-väkyaà mäthuräù çrutvä
kaàsa-bhétäù su-buddhayaù
taà dütaà rahasi prähuù
karëänte manda-väg yathä
tad-väkyam—his words; mathuraù—the peole of
Mathura; çrutvä—hearing; kaàsa-bhétäù—afraid of
Kaàsa; su-buddhayaù—intelligent; tam—to him;
dütam—the messenger; rahasi—in private;
prähuù—said; karëänte—in the ear; manda-
väg—whispering; yathä—as.
Hearing these words, the intelligent people of Mathurä, who
were all afraid of Kaàsa, took him to a secluded place and
whispered in his ear.

çré-mäthurä ücuù
vasudevasya ye puträù
kaàsena bahavo hatäù
ekävaçiñöävarajä
kanyä säpi divaà gatä
çré-mäthurä ücuù—the people of Mathura said;
vasudevasya—of vasudeva; ye—who; puträù—the sons; kaàsena—by Kaàsa; bahavaù—many; hatäù—killed; ekävaçiñöävarajä—one remaining; kanyä—a dauighter;
säpi—she; divam—to heaven; gatä—went.
The people of Mathurä said: Vasudeva's many sons were all
killed by Kaàsa. Only a daughter, who went to the heavenly
planets, survived.

vasudevo 'sti cätraiva
hy aputro déna-mänasaù
idaà na kathanéyaà hi
tvayä kaàsa-bhayaà pure
vasudevaù—Vasudeva; asti—is; ca—and;
atra—here; eva—indeed; hi—indeed;
aputraù—sonless; déna-mänasaù—unhappy at heart;
idam—thus; na—not; kathanéyam—to be spoken;
hi—indeed; tvayä—by you; kaàsa-bhayam—out of fear of
Kaàsa; pure—in the city.
Now sonless, Vasudeva is unhappy at heart. Because of the
danger of Kaàsa, you should not repeat these words in this city.

çauri-santäna-värtäà yo
väkti cen mathurä-pure
taà daëòayati kaàso 'sau
çaury-añöama-çiço ripuù
çauri—of Vasudeva; santäna—the family; värtäm—the
story; yaù—who; väkti—speaks; cet—if;
mathurä-pure—in Mathura City; tam—him;
daëòayati—punishes; kaàsaù—Kaàsa; asau—he;
çaury-añöama-çiçoù—of Vasudeva's eighth son; ripuù—the
enemy.
If in Mathurä-puré someone speaks this story of Vasudeva's
sons, then Kaàsa, the sworn enemy of Vasudeva's eighth son,
punishes him severely.

jana-väkyaà tataù çrutvä
düto vai campakä-purém
gatvätha kathayäm äsa
räjïe käraëam adbhutam
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; jana-väkyam—the words
of the people; tataù—then; çrutvä—hearing;
dütaù—the messenger; vai—indeed; campakä-purém—to the4
city of Campakä; gatvä—going; atha—then;
kathayäm äsa—spoke; räjïe—to the king;
käraëam—the reason; adbhutam—surprising.
Sré Närada said: After hearing the people's words, the
messenger returned to the city of Campakä and told the very
surprising story to the king.

mathuräyäm ästi çaurir
anapatyo 'ti-dénavat
tat-puträs tu purä jätäù
kaàsena nihatäù çrutam
çré-düta uväca—the messenger said; mathuräyäm—in
Mathurä; ästi—is; çauriù—Vasudeva;
anapatyaù—childless; ati-dénavat—like a very wretched
person; tat-puträù—his sons; tu—indeed;
purä—previously; jätäù—born; kaàsena—by Kaàsa;
nihatäù—killed; çrutam—heard.
The messenger said: Unhappy and childless, Vasudeva stays in
Mathurä. I heard that all his sons were killed by Kaàsa.

ekävaçiñöä kanyäpi
khaà gatä kaàsa-hastataù
evaà çrutvä yadu-purän
nirgato 'haà çanaiù çanaiù
ekä—one; avaçiñöä—remaining; kanyä—daughter; api—also; kham—to heaven; gatä—went; kaàsa-
hastataù—by Kaàsa's hand; evam—thus;
çrutvä—hearing; yadu-purät—from the city of the Yadus; nirgataù—come; aham—I; çanaiù çanaiù—very slowly.
One a daughter who, struck by Kaàsa's hand, went to the
heavenly planets, remains. Hearing this, I slowly left the Yadus'
city.

dåñöaù kaçcic chiñur mayä
caran—walking; våndävane—in Våndävana;
ramye—beautiful; kälindé-nikaöe—by the Yamunä's shore; çubhe—beautiful; akasmäl—suddenly; latikä-
vånde—among many vines; dåñöaù—seen;
kaçcic—someone; chiñuù—a boy; mayä—by me.
As I walked by the Yamunä's shore in beautiful Våndävana
forest I saw a boy among some vines.

tal-lakñaëa-samo räjan
go-gopa-gaëa-madhyataù
çrévatsäìko ghana-çyämo
vana-mäly ati-sundaraù
tal-lakñaëa-samaù—the same characteristsics; räjan—O
king; go-gopa-gaëa-madhyataù—among many cows and gopas; çrévatsäìkaù—marked with Srévatsa; ghana-çyämaù—dark as a
monsoon cloud; vana-mäli—wearing a forest garland;
ati-sundaraù—very handsome.
O king, He had all the features you described. He was
handsome, dark as a monsoon cloud, marked with Srévatsa, and
decorated with a forest garland. He was the midst of many cows
and gopas.

dvi-bhujo gopa-sünuç ca
paraà tv etad vilakñaëam
tvayä catur-bhujaç cokto
vasudevätmajo hariù
dvi-bhujaù—two artms; gopa-sünuù—a gopa's son;
ca—and; param—then; tv—indeed; etat—this;
vilakñaëam—extraordinary; tvayä—by you; catur-
bhujaù—four arms; ca—and; uktaù—said;
vasudevätmajaù—Vasudeva's son; hariù—Kåñëa.
There is one difference. He had two arms and Vasudeva's son
had four arms.

kià kartavyaà vada nåpa
muni-väkyaà måñä na hi
yatra yatra yathecchä te
tatra mäà preñaya prabho
kim—what?; kartavyam—should be don;
vada—tell; nåpa—O king; muni-väkyam—the sage's
words; måñä—false; na—not; hi—indeed;
yatra—where; yatra—where; yathä—as; icchä—the
desire; te—of you; tatra—there; mäm—me;
preñaya—please send; prabhaù—O lord.
What should be done? Tell me, O king. It cannot be that the
sage's words are untrue. O master, send me wherever you wish.

iti cintayatas tasya
vismitasya nåpaçya ca
gajähvayät sindhu-deçän
jetuà bhéñmaù samägataù
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; iti—thus;
cintayataù—thinking; tasya—of him;
vismitasya—surprised; nåpasya—of the king; ca—and; gajähvayät—from Hastinapura; sindhu-deçän—to Sindhu-
desa; jetum—to conquer; bhéñmaù—Bhiñma;
samägataù—arrived.
Sré Närada said: As the king was thinking about what to do,
Bhéñma, on his way to conquer Sindhu-deça, came from Hastinäpura.

taà püjya vimalo räja
dattvä tasmai balià bahu
papraccha sarväbhipräyaà
bhéñmaà dharma-bhåtäà varam
tam—him; püjya—worshiping; vimalaù—Vimala;
räja—King; dattvä—giving; tasmai—to him; balim—a
gift; bahu—great; papraccha—asked;
sarväbhipräyam—who knows everything; bhéñmam—Bhéñma;
dharma-bhåtäm—of pious men; varam—the best.
After worshiping him and giving him many gifts, King Vimala
asked a question of all-knowing Bhéñma, the best of pious men.

çré-vimala uväca
yäjïavalkyena pürvokto
mathuräyäà hariù svayam
vasudevasya devakyäà
bhaviñyati na saàçayaù
çré-vimala uväca—Sré Vimala said; yäj 24avalkyena—by yajnavalkya; pürvoktaù—previously said; mathuräyäm—in mathurä; hariù—Kåñëa;
svayam—personally; vasudevasya—of Vasudeva;
devakyäm—in Devaké; bhaviñyati—will be; na—no;
saàçayaù—doubt.
Sré Vimala said: Yäjïavalkya Muni told me that Lord
Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, will become the son of
Vasudeva and Devaké in Mathurä. Of this there is no doubt.

na jäto vasudevasya
sakäçe 'dya hariù paraù
åñi-väkyaà måñä na syät
kasmai däsyämi kanyakäù
na—not; jätaù—born; vasudevasya—of Vasudeva; sakäçe—in the presence; adya—now; hariù—the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; paraù—supreme; åñi-väkyam—the
words of the sage; måñä—false; na—not;
syät—are; kasmai—to whom?; däsyämi—I will give;
kanyakäù—my daughters.
Although the sage's words cannot be untrue, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead has not taken birth as Vasudeva's son. To
whom shall I give my daughters in marriage?

tvaà parävara-vittamaù
jitendriyo bälya-bhäväd
véro dhanvé vasüttamaù
etad vada mahä-buddhe
kià kartavyaà mayätra vai
mahä-bhägavataù—a great devotee; säkñät—directly; tvam—you; parävara-vittamaù—all-knowing;
jitendriyaù—conquering the senses; bälya-bhävät—from
childhood; véraù—a hero; dhanvé—a bowman;
vasüttamaù—the best of the Vasus; etat—this;
vada—please tell; mahä-buddhe—O intelligent one;
kim—what?; kartavyam—should be done; mayä—by me; atra—here; vai—indeed.
You are a great devotee. You know everything. Your senses
are carefully controlled. From childhood you have been a heroic
warrior. You are an expert archer and the best of the Vasus. O
very intelligent one, please say what I should do.

vimalaà präha gaìgeyo
mahä-bhägavataù kaviù
divya-dåg dharma-tattva-jïaù
çré-kåñëasya prabhäva-vit
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; vimalam—to
Vimala; präha—said; gaìgeyaù—Bhéñma; mahä-
bhägavataù—great devotee; kaviù—philosopher; divya-
dåg—with transcendental vision; dharma-tattva-j 24aù—understanding the truth of religion; çré-kåñëasya—of
Sré Kåñëa; prabhäva—the glory; vit—knowing.
Sré Närada said: The great devotee philosopher Bhéñma, who
had spiritual vision, understood the truth of religion, and was
fully aware of Lord Kåñëa's glories, spoke to King Vimala.

he räjan guptam äkhyänaà
vedavyäsa-mukhäc chrutam
sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà
çåëu harña-vivardhanam
çré-bhéñma uväca—Sré Bhisma said; he—O;
räjan—king; guptam—hidden; äkhyänam—story;
vedavyäsa—of Vedavyasa; mukhät—from the mouth;
çrutam—heard; sarva-päpa-haram—removing all sins;
puëyam—sacred; çåëu—pleasehear; harña-
vivardhanam—delightful.
Sré Bhéñma said: O king, please hear this secret I heard
from Vyäsa's mouth, a holy and delightful secret that removes all
sins.

devänäà rakñaëärthäya
daityänäà hi vadhäya ca
vasudeva-gåhe jätaù
paripürëatamo hariù
devänäm—of the demigods; rakñaëärthäya—for
protection; daityänäm—of the demons; hi—indeed; vadhäya—for killing; ca—and; vasudeva-gåhe—in
Vasudva's home; jätaù—born; paripürëatamo hariù—the
Supreme Personality of Godhead.
To protect the devotees and kill the demons, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead has taken birth in Vasudeva's home.

ardha-rätre kaàsa-bhayän
nétvä çauriç ca taà tvaram
gatvä ca gokule putraà
nidhäya çayane nåpa
ardha-rätre—in the middle of the night; kaàsa-
bhayän—out of fear of Kaàsa; nétvä—bringing;
çauriù—Vasudeva; ca—and; tam—Him;
tvaram—quickly; gatvä—gone; ca—and; gokule—in
Gokula; putram—son; nidhäya—placing; çayane—in
bed; nåpa—O king.
O king, out of fear of Kaàsa, Vasudeva took his son to
Gokula and placed Him in Yaçodä's bed.

yaçodä-nandayoù putréà
mäyäà nétvä puraà yayau
vavådhe gokule kåñëo
gupto jïäto na kair nåbhiù
yaçodä-nandayoù—of Nadna and Yaçodä; putrém—the
daughter; mäyäm—Mäyä; nétvä—taking; puram—to
the city; yayau—went; vavådhe—increased;
gokule—in Gokula; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; guptaù—hidden;
jïätaù—known; na—not; kair nåbhiù—by anyone.
Then to Mathurä City he took Nanda's and Yaçodä's daughter,
who was the goddess Mäyä. As Kåñëa grew up on Gokula, no one
understood His real identity.

harir gopäla-veña-dhåk
ekädaça samäs tatra
güòho väsaà kariñyati
daityaà kaàsaà ghätayitvä
prakaöaù sa bhaviñyati
saù—He; adya—today; eva—even;
våndakäraëye—in Våndävana forest; hariù—Kåñëa;
gopäla-veña-dhåk—dressed as a gopa; ekädaça—eleven;
samäù—years; tatra—there; güòhaù—hidden;
väsam—residence; kariñyati—will do; daityam—the
demon; kaàsam—Kaàsa; ghätayitvä—killing;
prakaöaù—revealed; sa—He; bhaviñyati—will be.
Today the Supreme Personality of Godhead is living as a gopa
in Våndävana. He will stay there, carefully concealed, for eleven
years and then He will kill the demon Kaàsa and His true identity
will be revealed.

ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù
çré-rämasya varäc ca yäù
täù sarväs tava bhäryäsu
babhüvuù kanyakäù çubhäù
ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù—the women of Ayodhyä; çré-
rämasya—of Lord Räma; varät—from the blessing;
ca—and; yäù—who; täù—they; sarväù—all;
tava—of you; bhäryäsu—in the wives; babhüvuù—were; kanyakäù—daughters; çubhäù—beautiful.
Because they were blessed by Lord Rämacandra, many women of
Ayodhyä, took birth as the beautiful daughters born from you and
your wives

güòhäya deva-deväya
deyäù kanyäs tvayä khalu
na vilambaù kvacit käryo
dehaù käla-vaço hy ayam
güòhäya—concealed; deva-deväya—to the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; deyäù—should be given;
kanyäù—daughters; tvayä—by you; khalu—indeed;
na—not; vilambaù—delay; kvacit—at all;
käryaù—should be done; dehaù—body; käla-vaçaù—subject
to time; hi—indeed; ayam—this.
Marry your daughters to the carefully concealed Supreme
Personality of Godhead. Don't delay. This body is subject to the
ravages of time.

ity uktvätha gate bhéñme
sarvajïe hastinäpuram
dütaà svaà preñayäm äsa
vimalo nanda-sünave
iti—thus; uktvä—speaking; atha—then;
gate—gone; bhéñme—Bhéñma; sarvajïe—all-
knowing; hastinäpuram—to Hasintapura;
dütam—messenger; svam—own; preñayäm äsa—sent;
vimalaù—Vimala; nanda-sünave—to Nanda's son, Kåñëa.
All-knowing Bhéñma spoke these words and then left for
Hastinäpura. Then King Vimala sent his messenger to Nanda's son,
Lord Kåñëa.
