The Worship of Tulasé

pratyuväca—replied; samvicärya—considering; kñaëam—for
a moment; hådi—in her heart.
Çré Närada said: Hearing Rädhä's words, and reflecting on
them in her heart for a moment, Candränanä, the best of all
friends, replied.

paraà saubhägya-daà rädhe
mahä-puëyaà vara-pradam
çré-kåñëasyäpi labdhy-arthaà
tulasé-sevanaà matam
çré-candränanä uväca—Çré Candränanä said;
param—great; saubhägya-dam—giving good fortune;
rädhe—O Rädhä; mahä-puëyam—very sacred; vara-
pradam—granting blessings; çré-kåñëasya—of Çré Kåñëa;
api—even; labdhy-artham—to attain; tulasé—of
Tulasé; sevanam—the service; matam—is considered.
Çré Candränanä said: O Rädhä, service to Tulasé gives the
greatest piety, the greatest good fortune, and the greatest
benediction. It gives Lord Kåñëa's association.

dåñöä—seen; spåñöä—touched; athavä—or;
dhyatä—remembered; kértitä—glorified; namitä—bowed
down; stutä—offered prayers; ropitä—planted;
siïcitä—watered; nityam—always;
püjitä—worshiped; tulasé—Tulasé; iñöa—desires;
dä—granting.
You should always gaze on Tulasé, touch her, remember her,
glorify her, bow down before her, offer prayers to her, plant
her, and worship her. Then she will grant Your desire.

navadhä tulasé-bhaktià
ye kurvanti dine dine
yuga-koöi-sahasräëi
te yänti sukåtaà çubhe
navadhä—nine kinds; tulasé-bhaktim—devotional service
to Tulasé; ye—who; kurvanti—do; dine—day; dine—after day; yuga—of yugas; koöi——ten
million; sahasräëi—thousands; te—they;
yänti—attain; sukåtam—piety; çubhe—O beautiful one.
They who day after day serve Tulasé in these nine ways
attain the result of pious deeds performed in many thousands of
millions of yugas.

yävat—as; chäkhä—branches; praçäkhäbhiù—and sub-
branches; béja—seeds; puñpa—flowers;
dalaiù—leaves; çubhaiù—beautiful and auspicious;
ropitä—planted; tulasé—Tulasé; martyaiù—by human
beings; vardhate—increases; vasudhä-tale—on the
surface of the earth; teñäm—of them; vaàçeñu—in the
families; ye—who; jätä—born; ye—who;
bhaviñyanti—will be; ye—who; gatäù—have gone;
ä-kalpa-yuga-sähasram—a thousand kalpa-yugas; teñäm—of
them; väsaù—residence; hareù—of Lord Hari;
gåhe—in the home.
A person who who plants Tulasé liberates his family. As many
branches, sub-branches, seeds, flowers, and leaves as are on the
Tulasé he has planted, so many ancestors and descendents in his
family for thousands of kalpa-yugas will go to Lord Kåñëa's
transcendental abode.

yat—what; phalam—result; sarva-patreñu—on all
leaves; sarva-puñpeñu—on all flowers; rädhike—O
Rädhä; tulasé-dalena—by a Tulasé leaf; ca—and;
ekena—by one; sarvadä—always; präpyate—is
attained; tu—indeed; tat—that.
O Rädhä, by offering Lord Kåñëa a single Tulasé leaf one
attains the result of offering Him every flower and leaf that
exists.

tulasé-prabhavair patrair
yo naraù püjayed dharim
lipyate na sa päpena
padma-patram ivämbhasä
tulasé—from Tulasé; prabhavaiù—grown;
patraiù—with leaves; yaù—who; naraù—a person;
püjayet—worships; harim—Kåñëa; lipyate—is touched; na—not; saù—he; päpena—by sin; padma-patram—a
lotus leaf; iva—like; ambhasa—by water.
A person who with offerings of Tulasé-leaves worships Lord
Kåñëa is not touched by sin as a lotus-leaf is not touched by
water.

suvarëa-bhära-çatakaà
rajataà yac-catur-guëam
tat-phalaà samaväpnoti
tulasé-vana-pälanät
suvarëa—of gold; bhära—bharas; çatakam—a
hundred; rajatam—silver; yac-catur-guëam—four
times; tat-phalam—that result;
samaväpnoti—attains; tulasé—of Tulasé; vana—of a
forest; pälanät—from protection.
By protecting a Tulasé forest one attains the result of
giving in pious charity a hundred bhäras of gold or four hundred
bhäras of silver.

tulasé-känanaà rädhe
gåhe yasyävatiñöhati
tad-gåhaà tértha-rüpaà hi
na yänti yama-kiìkaräù
tulasé—of Tulasé; känanam—a forest; rädhe—O
Rädhä; gåhe—in the home; yasya—of whom;
avatiñöhati—stays; tad-gåham—that home; tértha—of a
pilgrimage place; rüpam—teh form; hi—not;
na—indeed; yänti—go; yama—of Yamaräja;
kiìkaräù—the servants.
A home in the midst of a Tulasé forest is a sacred
pilgrimage place. Yamaräja's servants will never enter that home.

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà
kämadaà tulasé-vanam
ropayanti naräù çreñöhäs
te na paçyanti bhäskarim
sarva—all; päpa—sins; haram—removing;
puëyam—sacred; kämadam—fulfilling desires;
tulasé—Tulasé; vanam—forest; ropayanti—plants;
naräù—people; çreñöhäù—the best; te—they;
na—not; paçyanti—see; bhäskarim—Yamaräja.
They who plant a sacred Tulasé forest, which fulfills
desires and removes all sins, are the best of people. They will
never see Yamaräja.

ropanät—from planting; pälanät—from maintaining;
sekät—from watering; darçanät—from seeing;
sparçanän—from touching; nåëäm—of men;
tulasé—Tulasé; dahate—burns; päpam—sin;
väk—words; manaù—mind; käya—body; sa{—.sy
24citam—accumulated.
For persons who plant, protect, water, see, or touch her,
Tulasé burns the sins committed with the body, mind, and words.

gaìgädyäù saritas tathä
väsudevädayo devä

puñkara—with Puñkara Lake; ädyäni—beginning;
térthäni—holy places; gaìgä—the Gaìgä; ädyäù—beginning
with; saritaù—rivers; tathä—so; väsudeva—with
Lord Väsudeva; ädayaù—beginning with;
devä—Deities; vasanti—reside; tulasé—Tulasé;
dale—on a single leaf.
On a single Tulasé leaf the holy places beginning with
Puñkara, the sacred rivers beginning with the Gaìgä, and the
Deities headed by Lord Väsudeva reside.

tulasé-maïjaré-yukto
yas tu präëän vimuïcati
yamo 'pi nekñituà çakto
yuktaà päpa-çatair api
tulasé-maïjaré-yuktaù—with a Tulasé-ma
24jaré; yaù—one whop; tu—indeed;
präëän—life; vimuïcati—abandons;
yamaù—Yamaräja; api—even; na—not; ékñitum—to
see; çaktaù—is able; yuktam—endowed; päpa—of
sins; çataiù—with hundreds; api—even.
Even though stained with a hundred sins, a person who
touches a Tulasé-maïjaré as he leaves this life does not
see Yamaräja.

tulasé—Tulasé; kañöha—wood; jam—born;
yaù—one who; tu—indeed; candanam—sandal paste;
dhärayen—wears; naraù—a person; tat—that;
deham—body; na—not; spåçet—touches;
päpam—sin; kriyamänam—doing; api—even;
iha—here; yat—which.
Sin does not touch the the body of a sinner anointed with
Tulasé-paste.

tulasé-vipina-cchäyä
yatra yatra bhavec chubhe
tatra çräddhaà prakartavyaà
pitåëäà dattam akñayam
tulasé—of Tulasé; vipina—of a forest; chäyä—the
shade; yatra yatra—wherever; bhavec—may be;
çubhe—auspicious; tatra—there; çräddham—sraddha; prakartavyam—should be performed; pitåëäm—to the
pitas; dattam—offered; akñayam—akñaya.
Wherever is the beautiful shade of a Tulasé forest, there
çräddha should be offered. There akñaya should be offered to the
pitäs.

tulasyäù sakhi mähätmyaà
ädidevaç catur-mukhaù
na samartho bhaved vaktuà
yathä devasya çärìgiëaù
tulasyäù—of Tulasé; sakhi—) friend; mähätmyam—the
glory; ädidevaç—Brahmä; catur-mukhaù—who has four
heads; na—not; samarthaù—is able; bhavet—may
be; vaktum—to speak; yathä—as; devasya—of the
Lord; çärìgiëaù—who carries the çärìga bow.
O friend, as four-faced Brahmä cannot describe all the
glories of Lord Kåñëa, who holds the çärìga bow, so he cannot
descibe all the glories of Tulasé.

çré-kåñëacandra-caraëe
tulaséà candanair yutam
yo dadäti pumän stré vä
yathoktaà phalam äpnuyät
çré-kåñëacandra-caraëe—at the feet of Çré Kåñëacandra;
tulasém—Tulasé; candanaiù—with sandal paste;
yutam—endowed; yaù—who; dadäti—gives;
pumän—man; stré—woman; vä—or; yathä—as;
uktam—spoken; phalam—result; äpnuyät—attains.
A man or woman who offers sandal-paste and Tulasé to Çré
Kåñëacandra's feet attains the results I have told to You.

tulasé-sevanaà nityaà
kuru tvaà gopa-kanyake
çré-kåñëo vaçyatäà yäti
yena vä sarvadaiva hi
tulasé—to Tulasé; sevanam—service;
nityam—regularly; kuru—do; tvam—You; gopa-
kanyake—O gopé; çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; vaçyatäm—to
control; yäti—will go; yena—by which;
vä—or; sarvadä—always; eva—indeed; hi—certainly.
O gopé, serve Tulasé every day. Then Çré Kåñëa will always
be Your submissive servant.

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; ittham—thus;
candränanä-väkyam—the words of Candränanä;
çrutvä—hearing; räseçvaré—the queen of the räsa dnace; nåpa—O king; tulasé-sevanam—the service of Tulasé;
säkñät—directly; ärebhe—began; hari-toñaëamto please
Lord Hari.
Çré Närada said: O king, after hearing Candränanä's words,
Çré Rädhä, the queen of the räsa dance, in order to please Lord
Kåñëa, began to serve Çré Tulasé.

Taking Tulasé, beautiful with many green leaves, to the
middle of a ketaké forest, and placing her in a Tulasé-temple
that was round, tall, a hundred hastas in size, beautiful with
walls of gold and rubies, splendid with an outer wall of
emeralds, diamonds, and pearls, decorated with cintämaëi gems,
arched gateways, gold flags, and gold awnings everywhere, and
glorious like Indra's palace, at the time of the star abhijit,
saintly Rädhä, following Garga Muni's instructions, served Çré
Tulasé.

caitra-pürëävadhi vratam
çré-kåñëa-toñaëärthäya—tom please Çré Kåñëa;
bhaktyä—with devotion; paramayä—great; saté—the
saintly girl; iña—Septembeù—October; pürëäm—full-
moon; samärabhya—beginning; caitra—March-April; pürëa—full moon; avadhi—until; vratam—vow.
Beginning with the full moon of the month of Açvina
(September-October), and ending with the full moon of the month
of Caitra (March-April), to please Çré Kåñëa, saintly Rädhä
followed a vow with great devotion.

liquids; païcämåtena—with païcämåta;
tulasém—Tulasé; mäse—month; mäse—after month;

Month after month She sprinkled Tulasé with milk, sugar-cane
juice, grape-juice, mango-juice, païcämåta, and many
kinds of sweet and cool juice. On the first day of Vaiçäkha
(April-May), She ended the vow.

garga-diñöena vidhinä—with the rules given by Garga Muni; våñabhänu-sutä—Rädhä, the daughter of KIng Våñabhänu;
nåpa—O king; ñaö-païcäçattamaiù—with fifty-six; bhogaiù—kinds of food; brähmaëänäm—of brähmaëas;
dvi-lakñakam—two hundred thousand.
O king, following Garga Muni's instructions, King
Våñabhänu's daughter Rädhä then pleased two hundred thousand
brähmaëas with a great feast of fifty-six courses.

santarpya vastra-bhüñädyair
dakñiëäà rädhikä dadau
divyänäà sthüla-muktänäà
lakña-bhäraà videha-räö
santarpya—pleasing; vastra—with garments;
bhüñädyaiù—and ornaments; dakñiëäm—priestly reward;
rädhikä—Rädhä; dadau—gave; divyänäm—splendid;
sthüla-muktänäm—of great pearls; lakña-bhäram—a hundred
thousand; videha-räö—O king of Videha.
O king of Videha, then Rädhä gave them dakñiëä of a hundred-
thousand splendid large pearls and many costly garments and
ornaments.

koöi-bhäraà suvarëaëaà
gargäcäryäya sä dadau
çata-bhäraà suvarëänäà
muktänäà ca tathaiva hi
bhaktyä paramayä rädhä
brähmaëe brähmaëe dadau
koöi-bhäram—ten millions bharas; suvarëaëam—of
gold; gargäcäryäya—to Garga Muni; sä—She;
dadau—gave; çata-bhäram—a hundred bharas;
suvarëänäm—of gold; muktänäm—of pearls; ca—and;
tathä—so; eva—certainly; hi—certainly;
bhaktyä—devotion; paramayä—with great;
rädhä—Rädhä; brähmaëe brähmaëe—to each brähmaëa;
dadau—gave.
Rädhä gave ten million bhäras of gold to Garga Muni. With
great devotion She gave a hundred bhäras of gold and pearls to
each brähmaëa.

nanåtuç cäpsaro-gaëäù
tan-mandiropari suräù
puñpa-varñaà pracakrire
deva—of the demigods; dundubhayaù—the drums;
neduù—sounded; nanåtuç—danced; ca—and; apsaro-
gaëäù—the apsaras; tan-mandiropari—over the temple;
suräù—the demigods; puñpa-varñam—a shower of flowers;
pracakrire—did.
The demigods' drums sounded and the apsaräs danced. The
demigods showered flowers on the Tulasé-temple.

tadäviräsét tulasé hari-priyä
suvarëa-péöhopari çobhitäsanä
caturbhujä padma-paläça-vékñaëä
çyämä sphurad-dhema-kiréöa-kuëòalä
tadä—then; äviräsét—appeared; tulasé—Tulasé; hari-priyä—who is dear to Lord Kåñëa; suvarëa-
péöhopari—on a golden pedestal; çobhita—glorious;
äsanä—on a throne; caturbhujä—with four arms; padma-
paläça-vékñaëä—with lotus-petal eyes; çyämä—beautiful; sphurat—glittering; hema—golden; kiréöa—crown; kuëòalä—and earrings.
Then, seated on a glorious throne on a gold pedestal, her
eyes lotus petals, and her gold crown and earrings glittering,
beautiful four-armed Tulasé, who is dear to Lord Kåñëa, appeared.

pétämbaräc chädita-sarpa-veëéà
srajaà dadhänaà nava-vaijayantém
khagät samuttérya ca raìga-vallé
cucumba rädhäà parirabhya bähubhiù
pétämbarät—by a yellow cloth; chädita—covered;
sarpa—snake; veëém—braids; srajam—garland;
dadhänam—wearing; nava—new;
vaijayantém—vaijayanti; khagät—from the sky;
samuttérya—rising; ca—and; raìga-vallé—beautiful as a
flowering vine; cucumba—kissed; rädhäm—Rädhä;
parirabhya—embracing; bähubhiù—with four arms.
Descending from the sky, Tulasé, beautiful as a flowering
vine, with her four arms embraced and then kissed Rädhä, who wore
a new vaijayanté garland, and whose snake-braids were covered
with a yellow cloth.

ahaà prasannäsmi kalavaté-sute
tvad-bhakti-bhävena jitä nirantaram
kåtaà ca loka-vyavahära-saìgrahät
tvayä vrataà bhämini sarvato-mukham
çré-tulasé uväca—Çré Tulasé said; aham—I;
prasannä—pleased; asmi—am; kalavaté-sute—O daughter of
Kalävaté; tvat—of You; bhakti-bhävena—by the
devotion; jitä—defeated; nirantaram—always;
kåtam—done; ca—and; loka-vyavahära-saìgrahät—according
to the activities of the world; tvayä—by You;
vratam—vow; bhämini—O beautiful one; sarvato-
mukham—present everywhere.
Çré Tulasé said: O daughter of Kalävaté, I am pleased with
You. I am eternally conquered by Your loving devotion. O
beautiful one, as if You were an ordinary human being, You very
carefully followed this vow.

manorathas te sa-phalo 'tra bhüyäd
buddhéndriyaiç citta-manobhir agrataù
sadänukülatvam alaà pateù paraà
saubhägyam evaà parikértanéyam
manorathaù—the desire; te—of You; sa-
phalaù—fulfilled; atra—here; bhüyät—will be;
buddhi—by the intelligence; indriyaiù—and senses;
citta-manobhiù—by the heart and mind; agrataù—in the
presence; sadä—always; anukülatvam—love;
alam—great; pateù—of the Lord; param—great;
saubhägyam—good fortune; evam—thus;
parikértanéyam—should be said.
The desire that fills Your heart, mind, intelligence, and
senses, will be attained. Lord Kåñëa will be kind to You. You are
very fortunate.

natvätha rädhä våñabhänu-nandiné
pratyäha govinda-padäravindayor
bhaktir bhaven me viditä hy ahaituké

vadantém—speaking; tulasém—to Tulasé; hari-priyäm—dear
to Lord Kåñëa; natvä—bowing down; atha—then;

daughter; pratyäha—replied; govinda-
padäravindayoù—for the lotus feet of Lord Kåñëa;
bhaktiù—devotion; bhavet—may be; me—of me;

Çré Närada said: To Tulasé, who has spoken these words and
who was dear to Lord Kåñëa, Rädhä, the daughter of King
Våñabhänu, bowed down and said: May I have unalloyed devotion for
Lord Kåñëa's lotus feet.

thäntardadhe maithila räja-sattama
tathaiva rädhä våñabhänu-nandiné
prasanna-cittä sva-pure babhüva ha

Våñabhänu; prasanna—happy; cittä—at heart;

Saying, "So be it", Kåñëa's beloved Tulasé
disappeared. O ruler of Mithilä, O best of kings, then Rädhä,
King Våñabhänu's daughter, went home happy at heart.

çré-rädhikäkhyänäm idaà vicitraà
çåëoti yo bhakti-paraù påthivyäà
traivargya-bhävaà manasä sametya
räjaàs tato yäti naraù kåtärthatäm
çré-rädhikä—of Çré Rädhä; äkhyänäm—story;
idam—this; vicitram—wonderful; çåëoti—hears;
yaù—who; bhakti-paraù—devoted; påthivyäm—on the
earth; traivargya-bhävam—the three goals of life;
manasä—by the mind; sametya—attaining; räjan—O

person; kåtärthatäm—to success.
