The Story of the Personified Vedas

asaté-kusumopameya-käntir
yamunä-küla-kadamba-madhya-varté
nava-gopa-vadhü-viläsa-çälé
vana-mälé vitanotu maìgaläni
asaté-kusuma—and asati flower; upameya—like;
käntiù—glory; yamunä-küla-kadamba-madhya-varté—staying on
the Yamunä's shore; nava-gopa-vadhü—with the young
gopés; viläsa-çälé—pastimes; vana-mälé—a forest
garland; vitanotu—may grant;
maìgaläni—auspiciousness.
Glorious as an atasi flower, garlanded with forest flowers,
and enjoying pastimes with the youthful gopés in a kadamba forest
by the Yamunä's shore, may Lord Kåñëa grant auspiciousness to us.

parikaré-kåta-péta-paöaà harià
çikhi-kiréöa-nati-kåta-kandharam
lakuöa-veëu-karaà cala-kuëòalaà
paöutaraà naöa-veña-dharaà bhaje
parikaré-kåta—a sash; péta—yellow;
paöam—cloth; harim—Kåñëa; çikhi—peacock feather; kiréöa—crown; nati-kåta—sloping;
kandharam—neck; lakuöa—a stick; veëu—and flute;
karam—in hand; cala-kuëòalam—swinging earrings;
paöutaram—most expert; naöa—of a dancer;
vesä—appearance; dharam—wearing; bhaje—I worship.
Dressed as a dancer, with a yellow sash, a peacock-feather
crown, swinging earrings, a graceful neck, and a stick and flute
in His hand, Lord Kåñëa is the object of my worship.

çruti-rüpädayo gopyo
bhüta-pürvä varän mune
kathaà çré-kåñëacandreëa
jätäù pürëa-manorathäù
çré-bahuläçva uväca—Sré Bahuläçva said; çruti-
rüpädayaù—headed by the Personified Vedas; gopyaù—the
gs; bhüta-pürvä—before; varät—from a benediction; mune—O sage; katham—how?; çré-kåñëacandreëa—by Sré
Kåñëa; jätäù—born; pürëa—fulfilled;
manorathäù—desires.
Sré Bahuläçva said: O sage, how did Sré Kåñëacandra fulfill
the desires of the personified Vedas that were blessed to take
birth as gopés?

gopäla-kåñëa-caritaà
pavitraà paramädbhutam
etad vada mahä-buddhe
tvaà parävara-vittamaù
gopäla-kåñëa-caritam—the pastimes of Gopäla Kåñëa;
pavitram—sacred; paramädbhutam—very wonderful;
etat—this; vada—please tell; mahä-buddhe—O wise
one; tvam—you; parävara-vittamaù—the best of they who
know everything.
O wise one, you are the best of they who know everything.
Please tell this sacred and wonderful pastime of Lord Gopäla
Kåñëa.

çré-närada uväca
çruti-rüpäç ca yä gopyo
gopänäà su-kule vraje
lebhire janma vaideha
çeñaçäyé-varäc chrutät
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; çruti-rüpäù—the
personified Vedas; ca—and; yä—which;
gopyaù—gopés; gopänäm—of gopas; su-kule—in good
families; vraje—in Vraja; lebhire—attained;
janma—birth; vaideha—O king of Videha; çeñaçäyé-
varät—by the benediction of Señaçayé Viñëu; çrutät—from
hearing.
Sré Närada said: O king of Videha, because of a benediction
given by Lord Señaçayé Viñëu, some personified Vedas took birth
as gopés in the sainty gopa families of Vraja.
Text 6
kamanéyaà nanda-sutaà
vékñya våndävane ca täù
våndävaneçvaréà våndäà
lebhire tad-varecchayä
kamanéyam—handsome; nanda-sutam—Kåñëa;
vékñya—seeing; våndävane—in Våndävana; ca—and;
täù—they; våndävaneçvarém—the queen of Våndävana;
våndäm—Våndä; lebhire—attained; tad-varecchayä—by that
benediction.
In Våndävana forest seeing handsome Kåñëa, and yearning to attain Him, they approached Våndä-devé, the ruler of Våndävana.

våndä-dattäd varäd äçu
prasanno bhagavän hariù
nityaà täsäà gåhe yäti
räsärthaà bhakta-vatsalaù
våndä—by Vrnda; dattät—given; varät—from the
benediction; äçu—at once; prasannaù—pleased;
bhagavän—Lord; hariù—Kåñëa; nityam—always;
täsäm—of them; gåhe—in the home; yäti—goes;
räsärtham—to enjoy the rasa dance; bhakta-vatsalaù—kind to
the devotees.
Pleased with Våndä's benediction, Lord Kåñëa, who is always kind to His devotees, every day entered the gopés homes to enjoy the räsa dance.

ekadä tu niçéthinyä
vyatéte prahara-dvaye
räsärthaà bhagavän kåñëaù
präptaväàs tad-gåhän nåpa
ekadä—once; tu—indeed; niçéthinyä—of the
night; vyatéte—passed; prahara-dvaye—six hours; räsärtham—to enjoy the rasa dance; bhagavän—Lord;
kåñëaù—Kåñëa; präptaväàù—went; tad-gåhän—to their
homes; nåpa—O king.
O king, once, when six hours of the night had already
passsed, Lord Kåñëa came, very late, to their homes.

tadä utkaëöhitä gopyaù
kåtvä tat-püjanaà param
papracchuù parayä bhaktyä
girä madhurayä prabhum
tadä—then; utkaëöhitä—aqnxious; gopyaù—the
gopés; kåtvä—making; tat-püjanam—His worship;
param—great; papracchuù—asked; parayä—with great; bhaktyä—devotion; girä—with words;
madhurayä—sweet; prabhum—the Lord.
The anxious gopés worshiped Him and with sweet words asked a
question.

çré-gopya ücuù
kathaà na cägataù çéghraà
no gåhän våjinärdana
utkaëöhitänäà gopénäà
tvayi candre cakora-vat
çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; katham—why?;
na—not; ca—and; ägataù—come; çéghram—long; naù—our; gåhän—homes; våjinärdana—O savior from
distress; utkaëöhitänäm—anxious; gopénäm—gopés; tvayi—to You; candre—to the moon; cakora-vat—like a
cakora bird.
The gopés said: O savior from troubles, why did You not come
sooner? As cakora birds yearn to see the moon, we gopés always
yearn to see You.

çré-bhagavän uväca
yo yasya citte vasati
na sa düre kadäcana
khe süryaà kamalaà bhümau
dåñövedaà sphuöati priyäù
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; yaù—who; yasya—of whom; citte—in the
heart; vasati—resides; na—not; sa—He;
düre—far away; kadäcana—ever; khe—in the sky;
süryam—the sun; kamalam—a lotus; bhümau—on the
earth; dåñövä—seeing; idam—this;
sphuöati—blooms; priyäù—O beloveds.
The Supreme Lord said: O My beloveds, a person who lives in
someone's heart is never far away. Gazing at the sun in the sky,
a lotus on the earth is inspired to blossom wide.

bhäëòére me guruù säkñäd
durväsä bhagavän muniù
ägato 'dya priyäs tasya
sevärthaà gatavän aham
bhäëòére—in Bhandiravan; me—My; guruù—guru; säkñät—directly; durväsä—Durvasa;
bhagavän—Lord; muniù—Muni; ägataù—come;
adya—today; priyäù—O beloveds; tasya—of him;
sevärtham—to serve; gatavän—went; aham—I.
O My beloveds, today My spiritual master, Lord Durväsä Muni,
came to Bhäëòéravana forest, and I went to serve him.

gurur brahmä gurur viñëur
guru devo maheçvaraù
guruù säkñät paraà brahma
tasmai çré-gurave namaù
guruù—the guru; brahmä—Brahma; guruù—the
guru; viñëuù—Viñëu; guru—the guru;
devaù—Lord; maheçvaraù—Siva; guruù—the guru;
säkñät—directly; paraà brahma—the Supreme Personality of
Godhead; tasmai—to him; çré-gurave—Sré Guru;
namaù—obeisances.
The spiritual master is like Lord Brahmä. The spiritual master
is like Lord Viñëu. The spiritual master is like Lord Siva. The spiritual
master is like the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I offer my
respectful obeisances to my glorious spiritual master.

ajïäna-timirändhasya
jïänäïjana-çaläkayä
cakñur unmélitam yena
tasmai çré-gurave namaù
ajïäna—of ignorance; timirändhasya—the blinding
darkness; jïäna—of knowledge; a 24jana—the ointment; çaläkayä—the surgical tool;
cakñuù—eyes; unmélitam—opened; yena—by whom;
tasmai—to him; çré-gurave—my spiritual master;
namaù—obeisances.
I was born in the darkest ignorance, and My spiritual master
opened my eyes with the torch of knowledge. I offer My respectful
obeisances to him.*
Text 15
sva-guruà mäà vijanéyän
nävamanyeta karhicit
na martya-buddhyä seveta
sarva-deva-mayo guruù
sva-gurum—the spiritual master; mäm—Myself;
vijanéyän—one should know; na avamanyeta—one should never
disrespect; karhicit—at any time; na—never;
martya-buddhyä—with the ideas of being an ordinary man;
seveta—should consider; sarva-deva—of all the demigods; mayaù—the representative; guruù—the spiritual master.
One should know the spiritual master as Myself and never
disrespect him in any way. One should not envy him, thinking him
an ordinary man, for he is the representative of all the
demigods.*

tasmät tat-püjanaà kåtvä
natvä tat-päda-paìkajam
ägato 'haà vilambena
bhavaténäà gåhän priyaù
tasmät—therefore; tat-püjanam—his worship;
kåtvä—doing; natvä—bowing down; tat-päda-paìkajam—to
his lotus feet; ägataù—come; aham—I;
vilambena—with a delay; bhavaténäm—of you; gåhän—to
the homes; priyäù—O beloveds.
O My beloveds, I worshiped him and offered respects to his
lotus feet. That is why I was late in coming to your homes.

çrutvä tat paramaà väkyaà
gopyaù sarväs tu vismitäù
kåtäïjali-puöä ücuù
çré-kåñëaà namra-kandharäù
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; çrutvä—hearing; tat—that; paramam—supreme; väkyam—words;
gopyaù—the gs; sarväù—all; tu—indeed;
vismitäù—filled with wonder; kåtäïjali-puöäù—with
folded hands; ücuù—said; çré-kåñëam—to Sré Kåñëa; namra-kandharäù—with bowed heads.
Sré Närada said: Filled with wonder to hear these words,
with bowed heads and folded hands the gopés spoke to Lord Kåñëa.

çré-gopya ücuù
paripürëatamasyäpi
durväsäs te guruù småtaù
aho tad-darçanaà kartuà
mano naç codyataà prabho
çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; paripürëatamasya—of the
Supreme Personality of Godhead; api—even;
durväsäù—Durvasa Muni; te—of You; guruù—the guru; småtaù—considered; ahaù—Oh; tad-darçanam—to see
him; kartum—to do; manaù—heart; naù—of us; ca—and; udyatam—yearns; prabhaù—O Lord.
The gopés said: You are the perfect Supreme Personality of
Godhead. Durväsä Muni is Your spiritual master! O Lord, our
hearts yearn to see him.
Text 19
adya deva niçéthinyä
vyatéte prahara-dvaye
kathaà tad-darçanaà bhüyäd
asmäkaà parameçvara
adya—now; deva—O Lord; niçéthinyä—of the
night; vyatéte—passed; prahara-dvaye—six hours; katham—how?; tad-darçanam—the sight of him;
bhüyät—may be; asmäkam—of us; parameçvara—O Supreme
Lord.
O Supreme Lord, how can we see him now that six hours of the
night have passed?
Text 20
tathä madhye dérgha-nadé
yamunä pratibandhikä
kathaà tat-taraëaà navaà
åte deva bhaviñyati
tathä—so; madhye—in the middle; dérgha-nadé—the
great river; yamunä—Yamunä; pratibandhikä—an
obstaclke; katham—how?; tat-taraëam—crossing it; navam—a boat; åte—without; deva—O Lord;
bhaviñyati—will be.
The great Yamunä river is a great obstacle. O Lord, how can
we cross it without a boat?
Text 21
çré-bhagavän uväca
avaçyam eva gantavyaà
bhavatébhir yadä priyäù
yamunäm etya caitad vai
vaktavyaà märga-hetave
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; avaçyam—unavoidably; eva—indeed;
gantavyam—should be gone; bhavatébhiù—by you;
yadä—when; priyäù—O beloveds; yamunäm—the Yamunä; etya—crossing; ca—and; etat—this;
vai—indeed; vaktavyam—should be said; märga-hetave—to
make a path.
The Supreme Lord said: O My beloveds, you must go to see
him. When you come to the Yamunä, speak these words:

yadi kåñëo bäla-yatiù
sarva-doña-vivarjitaù
tarhi no dehi märgaà vai
kälindi saritäà vare
yadi—if; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; bäla-yatiù—a
brahmacari; sarva-doña-vivarjitaù—completely faultless; tarhi—then; naù—to us; dehi—give; märgam—a
path; vai—indeed; kälindi—O Yamuna_; saritäm—of
rivers; vare—the best.
O Yamunä, O best of rivers, if Kåñëa is a perfect and
faultess brahmacäré, then please give us a path to cross you.

ity ukte vacane kåñëä
märgaà vo däsyati svataù
sukhena tena vrajata
yüyaà sarvä vrajäìganäù
iti—thus; ukte—said; vacane—words;
kåñëä—the Yamunä; märgam—a path; vaù—to you;
däsyati—will give; svataù—personally;
sukhena—happily; tena—by that; vrajata—go;
yüyam—you; sarvä—all vrajäìganäù—girls of Vraja.
When you speak these words, the Yamunä will give you a path.
O girls of Vraja, then you may easily cross.

pätrair dérghair vrajäìganäù
ñaö-païcäçattamän bhogän
nétvä sarväù påthak påthak
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; iti—thus;
çrutvä—hearing; atha—then; tad-väkyam—His words; pätraiù—with post; dérghaiù—great; vrajäìganäù—the
girls of Vraja; sat-païcäçattamän—fifty-six;
bhogän—foods; nétvä—bringing; sarväù—all;
påthak påthak—specifically.
Hearing these words, the girls of Vraja filled fifty-six
great pots with many different kinds of foods.

yamunäm etya hary-uktaà
jagur änata-kandharäù
sadyaù kåñëa dadau märgaà
gopébhyo maithileçvara
yamunäm—to the Yamunä; etya—goinbg; hary-
uktam—Kåñëa's words; jaguù—said; änata-kandharäù—with
bowed heads; sadyaù—at once; kåñëä—the Yamunä;
dadau—gave; märgam—a path; gopébhyaù—to the gs;
maithileçvara—O king of Mithilä.
O king of Mithilä, they went to the Yamunä and with bowed
heads repeated Kåñëa's words. The Yamunä at once gave a path to
the gopés.

pradakñiëé-kåtya—circumambulating; munim—the sage;

natvä—bowing down; tad-darçanam—the sight of him;

açanam—food; bahu—abundant; me—mine;

Filled with wonder, the gopés went to Bhäëòéravana forest.
where they saw Durväsä Muni, bowed down before him,
circumambulated him, and, each of them saying, "O sage,
the food I have brought should be tasted first," placed many
foods before him.

vijïäya muni-çärdülaù
proväca vimalaà vacaù
evam—thus; vivadamänänäm—agruing; gopénäm—of the
gopés; bhakti-lakñaëam—the nature of devotional
service; vijïäya—understanding; muni-
çärdülaù—the tiger of sages; proväca—spoke;
vimalam—sweet; vacaù—words.
Understanding the pure devotion of the quarreling gopés,
Durväsä, the tiger of sages, spoke sweetly to them.
Text 29
çré-munir uväca
gopyaù paramahäàso 'haà
kåta-kåtyo hi niñkriyaù
tasmän mukhe me dätavyaà
svaà svaà cäpy açanaà karaiù
çré-munir uväca—the sage said; gopyaù—O gopés;
paramahäàsaù—a paramahamsa; aham—i am; kåta-
kåtyaù—attained thre goal of life; hi—indeed;
niñkriyaù—without material activities; tasmän—therefore; mukhe—in the mouth; me—of me; dätavyam—should be
given; svam svam—own; ca—and; api—also;
açanam—food; karaiù—by the hands.
The sage said: O gopés, I am a paramahaàsa. I have attained
the highest goal in life. I never do any material action. For
this reason each of you should with her own hand place in my
mouth the food she has brought.

evaà vidärite tena
mukhe gopyo 'ti-harñitäù
ñaö-païcäçattamän bhogän
svän svän sarväù samäkñipan
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; evam—thus;
vidärite—opened; tena—by him; mukhe—in the mouth; gopyaù—the gopés; ati-harñitäù—very happy; sat-
païcäçattamän—the fifty-six; bhogän—foods;
svän svän—their own; sarväù—all; samäkñipan—placed.
Sré Närada said: The jubilant gopés then placed in his wide-
open mouth all the fifty-six kinds of food they had brought.

kñipanténäà ca gopénäà
paçyanténäà munéçvaraù
jaghäsa koöiço bharän
bhogän sarvän kñudäturaù
kñipanténäm—placing; ca—and; gopénäm—gopés; paçyanténäm—looking; munéçvaraù—the king of sages;
jaghäsa—ate; koöiçaù—thousands; bharän—of bharas; bhogän—oif food; sarvän—all; kñudäturaù—tormented
with hunger.
As the gopés fed him and watched what he did, Durväsä, the
king of sages, ate thousands of bhäras of food as if he were
tormented with hunger.

vismitänäà ca gopénäà
paçyanténäà parasparam
itthaà çünyäni päträëi
babhüvur nåpa-sattama
vismitänäm—astonished; ca—and; gopénäm—of the
gopés; paçyanténäm—looking; parasparam—at each
other; ittham—thus; çünyäni—empty;
päträëi—pots; babhüvuù—became; nåpa-sattama—O best of
kings.
O best of kings, when all the pots were emptied the gopés
looked at each other with astonishment.

atha gopyo munià çäntaà
natvä taà bhakta-vatsalam
vismitäù praëatäù prähuù
sarväù pürëa-manorathäù
atha—then; gopyaù—the gopés; munim—to the
dage; çäntam—peaceful; natvä—bowing down;
tam—to him; bhakta-vatsalam—kind to the devotees;
vismitäù—astonished; praëatäù—bowing down;
prähuù—said; sarväù—all; pürëa-manorathäù—their
desires fulfilled.
The astonished gopés. their desires now fulfilled, bowed
down before the peaceful sage, who was always kind to the
devotees, and spoke.

çré-gopya ücuù
mune ägamanät pürvaà
kåñëokta-vacasä nadém
tértvägatäs tvat-samépaà
darçanärthaà çubhecchayä
çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; mune—O sage;
ägamanät—from the arrival; pürvam—before; kåñëokta-
vacasä—by Kåñëa's words; nadém—the river;
tértvä—crossing; ägatäù—come; tvat-samépam—before
you; darçanärtham—to see; çubhecchayä—by teh desire
for auspiciousness.
The gopés said: O sage, when we came here to see you, we
were able to cross the river by repeating some words Kåñëa told
us.

itaù kathaà gamiñyämaù
sandeho 'yaà mahän abhüt
tad vidhehi namas tubhyaà
yena panthä laghur bhavet
itaù—then; katham—how?; gamiñyämaù—we will
go; sandehaù—doubt; ayam—this; mahän—great; abhüt—was; tat—that; vidhehi—please give;
namaù—obeisances; tubhyam—to you; yena—by which; panthä—the path; laghuù—easy; bhavet—will be.
How will we return? Now we are filled with doubt. We offer
our respects to you. Please give us a way to cross the Yamunä.

çré-munir uväca
sukhenätaù pragantavyaà
bhavatébhir yadä svataù
yamunäm etya caitad vai
vaktavyaà märga-hetave
çré-munir uväca—the sage said; sukhena—easily;
ataù—then; pragantavyam—should be traveled;
bhavatébhiù—by you; yadä—when; svataù—personally; yamunäm—to the Yamunä; etya—coming; ca—and;
etat—this; vai—indeed; vaktavyam—should be said; märga-hetave—to make a pathway.
The sage said: i will give you something to say that will
give you easy passage across the Yamunä.

nirannaù—without eating food; nirväré—without drinking

path; vai—indeed; kälindé—O aymunä; saritäm—of

ukte—saying; vacane—in the words; kåñëä—the
Yamunä; märgam—a path; vaù—to you; däsyati—will

O Yamunä, O best of rivers, if Durväsä Muni carefully
follows his vow of living only by drinking dürvä grass juice and
never eats or drinks anything else, then please give us a path to
cross you.
When you speak these words, the Yamunä will give you a path
to cross her.

çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; iti—thus;
çrutvä—hearing; vacaù—the words; gopyaù—the gopés; natvä—bowing; tam—to him; muni-puìgavam—the great
sage; yamunäm—to the Yamunä; etya—going; muny-
uktam—the sage's words; ca—and; uktvä—saying;
tirtvä—crossing; nadém—the river; nåpa—O king.
Sré Närada said: O king, hearing these words, the gopés
bowed down before the great sage, went to the Yamunä, repeated
the sage's words, and easily crossed the river.

çré-kåñëa-pärçvam äjagmur
vismitä maìgaläyanäù
çré-kåñëa-pärçvam—to Sré Kåñëa's side;
äjagmuù—went; vismitä—astonished;
maìgaläyanäù—auspiucious.
Astonished, the saintly gopés approached Lord Kåñëa.
Text 41
atha räse gopa-vadhvaù
sandehaà manasotthitam
papracchuù çré-harià vékñya
rahaù pürëa-manorathäù
atha—then; räse—in the rasa dance; gopa-
vadhvaù—the gs; sandeham—doubt; manasä—in the
heart; utthitam—risen; papracchuù—asked; çré-
harim—Kåñëa; vékñya—seeing; rahaù—in a secluded
place; pürëa-manorathäù—their desires fulfilled.
Then a doubt rose in the gopés' hearts. During the räsa
dance, in a secluded place, when their desires were all
fulfilled, the gopés asked a question of Sré Kåñëa.

çré-gopya ücuù
durväsaso darçanaà bhoù

kåtam—done; asmäbhiù—by us; agrataù—in tyhe
presence; yuvayoù—of You both; väkyataù—from the
words; ca—and; atra—here; sandehaù—a doubt; ayam—this; prajäyate—is born.
The gopés said: We saw Durväsä Muni, but now a doubt about
what You and he told us has risen in our hearts.

çiñyaù—the disciple; måñä-vädé—speaking lies;
na—not; saàçayaù—doubt; järaù—a rake;
tvam—You; asi—are; gopénäm—of the gopés;
rasikaù—an enjoyer of nectar pastimes; bälyataù—since
childhood; prabhaù—O Lord; katham—how; bäla-
yatiù—a brahmacari; tvam—You; vai—indeed;
vada—tell; tad-våjinärdana—O sdavior from troubles;
katham—how?; durväsasam—durvasa juice;
pétvä—drinking; durväsä—Durvasa; bahu-bhuk—eating a
great feast; muniù—the sage; naù—of us;
jäta—born; eña—this; sandehaù—doubt;
paçyanténäm—looking on; vrajeçvara—O master of Vraja.
As the spiritual master acts, so the disciple follows. If
the spiritual master speaks lies, then the disciple will also
speak lies. O Lord, You are a rake. You are the gopés' lover.
Since childhood you have enjoyed nectar pastimes with the gopés.
How are You a brahmacäré? O savior from troubles, please tell us.
How is Durväsä a sage that lives only by drinking dürvä-grass
juice? We personally saw him eat an enormous feast. O master of
Vraja, this is our doubt.
Text 45
çré-bhagavän uväca
nirmamo nirahaìkäraù
samänaù sarvagaù paraù
sadä vaiñamya-rahito
nirguëo 'haà na saàçayaù
çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead
said; nirmamaù—free of material possesiveness;
nirahaìkäraù—free of material ego; samänaù—equal;
sarvagaù—all-pervading; paraù—the Supreme;
sadä—eternally; vaiñamya-rahitaù—faultless;
nirguëaù—free of the material modes; aham—I am;
na—no; saàçayaù—doubt.
The Supreme Lord said: I am the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. i am all-pervading, faultless, and equal to all. I am
free of the material defects of possessiveness and false-ego. I
am free of the modes of material nature.

tathäpi bhaktän bhajato
bhaje 'haà vai yathä tathä
tathaiva sädhur jïäné vai
vaiñamya-rahitaù sadä
tathäpi—nevertheless; bhaktän—the devotees;
bhajataù—worshiping; bhaje—worship; aham—I;
vai—indeed; yathä—as; tathä—so; tathä—so;
eva—indeed; sädhuù—a devotee; jïäné—wise; vai—indeed; vaiñamya-rahitaù—faultless;
sadä—always.
As My devotees serve Me, I also serve them in reciprocation.
As I reciprocate in this way, so a wise and faultless devotee
also reciprocates.
Text 47
na buddhi-bhedaà janayed
ajïänäà karma-saìginäm
joñayet sarva-karmäëi
vidvän yuktaù samäcaran
na—do not; buddhi-bhedam—disrupt the intelligence; janayet—do; ajïänäm—of the foolish; karma-
saìginäm—attached to fruitive work; joñayet—dovetailed; sarva—all; karmäëi—work; vidvän—learned;
yuktaù—all engaged; samäcaran—practicing.
Let not the wise disrupt the minds of the ignorant who are
attached to fruitive action. They should not be encouraged to
refrain from work, but to engage in work in the spirit of
devotion.*
Text 48
yasya sarve samärambhäù
käma-saìkalpa-varjitäù
jïänägni-dagdha-karmäëaà
tam ähuù paëòitaà budhäù
yasya—one whose; sarve—all sorts of;
samärambhäù—in all attempts; käma—desire for sense
gratification; saìkalpa—determination; varjitäù—are
devoid of; jïäna—of perfect knowledge;
agni—fire; dagdha—being burnt by; karmäëam—the
performer; tam—him; ähuù—declare;
paëòitam—learned; budhäù—those who know.
One is understood to be in full knowledge whose every act is
devoid of desire for sense gratification. He is said by sages to
be a worker whose fruitive action is burned up by the fire of
perfect knowledge.*
Text 49
niräçir yata-cittätmä
tyakta-sarva-parigrahaù
çaréraà kevalaà karma
kurvan näpnoti kilbiñam
niräçiù—without desire for results;
yata—controlled; citta-ätmä—mind and intelligence;
tyakta—giving up; sarva—all; parigrahaù—sense of
proprietorship over all possessions; çaréram—in keeping
body and soul together; kevalam—only; karma—work; kurvan—doing so; na—never; äpnoti—does not
acquire; kilbiñam—sinful reactions.
Such a man of understanding acts with mind and intelligence
perfectly controlled, gives up all sense of proprietorship over
his possessions and acts only for the bare necessities of life.
Thus working, he is not affected by sinful reactions.*
Text 50
na hi jïänena sädåçaà
pavitram iha vidyate
tat svayaà yoga-saàsiddhaù
kälenätmani vindati
na—never; hi—certainly; jïänena—with
knowledge; sädåçam—in comparison;
pavitram—sanctified; iha—in this world;
vidyate—exists; tat—that; svayam—itself;
yoga—devotion; saàsiddhaù—matured; kälena—in course of
time; ätmani—in himself; vindati—enjoys.
In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as
transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of
all mysticsm. And one who has achieved this enjoys the self
within himself in due course of time.*
Text 51
brahmaëy ädhäya karmäëi
saìgaà tyaktvä karoti yaù
lipyate na sa päpena
padma-patram ivämbhasä
brahmaëi—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;
ädhäya—resigning unto; karmäëi—all works;
saìgam—attachment; tyaktvä—giving up;
karoti—performs; yaù—who; lipyate—is affected;
na—never; sa—he; päpena—by sin; padma-patram—a
lotus life; iva—like; ambhasä—in the water.
One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering
the results unto the Supreme God, is not affected by sinful
action, as the lotus leaf is untouched by water.*
Text 52
tasmän munis tu durväsäù
bahu-bhuk tvad-dhite rataù
na tasya bhojanecchä syäd
dürvä-rasa-mitäçanaù
tasmät—therefore; muniù—the sage; tu—indeed; durväsäù—Durvasa; bahu-bhuk—eating a great feast;
tvad-dhite—for your sake; rataù—engaged; na—not; tasya—of him; bhojana—to eat; icchä—the desire; syät—is; dürvä-rasa-mitäçanaù—who only eats a small
amount of durva grass juice.
Durväsä Muni ate that great feast for your sake. He did not
desire to eat it. He lives by drinking a little dürvä-grass
juice.

çré-närada uväca
iti çrutvä vaco gopyaù
sarväs täç chinna-saàçayäù
çruti-rüpä jïäna-mayyo
babhüvur maithileçvara
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; iti—thus;
çrutvä—having heard; vacaù—these words; gopyaù—the
gs; sarväù—all; täù—they; chinna—broken;
saàçayäù—doubt; çruti-rüpä—the personified Vedas;
jïäna-mayyaù—filled with knowledge;
babhüvuù—became; maithileçvara—O king of Mithilä.
Sré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, when they heard these
words, the gopés that had been personified Vedas became filled
with transcendental knowledge. Their doubt was broken.
