Description of the Abode of Çré Goloka


Text 1


jihväà labdhväpi yaù kåñëam
kértanéyaà na kértayet
labdhväpi mokña-niçreëià
sa närohati durmatiù


jihväm—toungue; labdhvä—attaining; api—also; yaù—who; kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; kértanéyam—to be glorified; na—not; kértayet—glorifies; labdhvä—attaining; api—also; mokña-of liberation; niçreëim—staircase; saù—he; na—not; ärohati—climbs; durmatiù—fool.


A person who has a tongue but does not glorify glorious Çré Kåñëa is a fool. Even if he somehow approaches the staircase to liberation, he cannot climb it.

atha te sampravakñyämi
çré-kåñëägamanaà bhuvi
asmin väräha-kalpe vai
yad bhütaà tac chåëu prabho


atha—now; te—to you; sampravakñyämi—I will speak; çré-kåñëa—of Çré Kåñëa; ägamanam—the arrival; bhuvi—on the earth; asmin—this; väräha-kalpe—in the Varäha-kalpa; vai—indeed; yat—what; bhütam—was; tat—that; çåëu—please hear; prabhaù—O lord.


Now I will describe to you Çré Kåñëa's coming to this earth during the Varäha-kalpa. O lord, please hear what happened.

purä—formerly; dänava—of the dänavas; daityänäm—and daityas; naräëäm—of the humans; khalu—indeed; bhubhujäm—of the kings; bhüri—great; bhära—with a burden; samäkräntä—overcome; påthvé—the earth; gaù—of a cow; rüpa—in the form; dhäriëé—manifesting; anätha—without a protector; vat—like; rudanté—crying; iva—like; vedayanté—describing; nija—own; vyatham—distress; kampayanté—making tremble; nijam—own; gätram—body; brahmäëam—to Lord Brahmä; çaraëam—shelter; gatä—went.


In ancient times the earth, overcome with a burden of many daityas, dänavas, and human kings, assumed the form of a cow and, helplessly crying, trembling, and describing her troubles, took shelter of the demigod Brahmä.


Text 5


brahmäthäçvasya täà sadyaù
sarva-deva-gaëair våtaù
çaìkareëa samaà prägäd
vaikuëöhaà mandiraà hareù


brahmä—Brahmä; atha—then; äçvasya—comforting; täm—her; sadyaù—at once; sarva—all; deva—of the demigods; gaëaiù—by multitudes; våtaù—surrounded; çaìkareëa—Çiva; samam—with; prägät—went; vaikuëöham—to Vaikuëöha; mandiram—the palace; hareù—of Lord Hari.


Brahmä comforted her and then, accompanied by Çiva and the demigods, went to Lord Hari's palace in Vaikuëöha.


Text 6


natvä catur-bhujaà viñëuà
sväbhipräyaà jagäda ha
athodvignaà deva-gaëaà
çré-näthaù präha taà vidhim


natvä—bowing down; catur-bhujam—with four arms; viñëum—to Lord Viñëu; sva—own; abhipräyam—intention; jagäda—explained; ha—certainly; atha—then; udvignam—distressed; deva-gaëam—to the demigods; çré-näthaù—the husband of the goddess of fortune; präha—spoke; tam—to him; vidhim—Brahmä.


Brahmä bowed down before four-armed Lord Viñëu and explained why he had come. Then He who is the husband of the goddess of fortune spoke to Brahmä and the troubled demigods.

kåñëaà svayaà vigaëitäëòa-patià pareçaà

käryaà kadäpi na bhaviñyati yaà vinä hi

çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; svayam—Himself; vigaëita—countless; aëòa—of universes; patim—the master; para—of others; éçam—the master; s_kñät—directly; akhaëòam—unbroken; atidevam—beyond the demigods; atéva-lélam—who enjoys transcendental pastimes; käryam—mission; kadäpi—sometimes; na—not; bhaviñyati—will be; yam—whom; vinä—without; hi—not; gaccha—go; äçu—at once; tasya—of Him; viñadam—pure; padam—abode; avyayam—eternal; tvam—you.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Without Kåñëa, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of countless universes, perfect, above the demigods, and the enjoyer of transcendental pastimes, this problem will not be solved. You should go to His eternal and effulgent abode at once.

çré-brahmä uväca—Çré Brahmä said; tvattaù—than You; param—greater; na—not; jänämi—I know; paripürëatamam—most perfect; svayam—personally; yadi—if; yaù—who; anyaù—another; tasya—of Him; s_kñät—directly; lokam—the world; darçaya—please show; naù—us; prabhaù—O Lord.


Çré Brahmä said: I do not know anyone greater and more perfect than You. If there is such a person, please show Him to us, O Lord.

Çré Närada said: When this was said, perfect Lord Hari showed all the demigods a spiritual river path flowing through the hole Çré Vämana made in the universe with His toenail.

bahis te niryayuù suräù
kaliìga-bimba-vac cedaà
brahmäëòaà dadåçus tv adhaù


jala-yänena—on a boat; märgeëa—on the path; bahiù—outside; te—they; niryayuù—went; suräù—the demigods; kaliìga-bimba-vat—like a tiny kuöaja seed; ca—also; idam—this; brahmäëòam—universe; dadåçuù—saw; tu—indeed; adhaù—below.


Going by boat on this path, the demigods left the universe. They saw the universe was like a round kuöaja fruit far below.


Text 12


indräyaëa-phalänéva
luöhanty anyäni vai jale
vilokya vismitäù sarve
babhuvus cakitä iva


indräyaëa-phaläni—kuöaja fruits; iva—like; luöhanti—moving to and fro; anyäni—others; vai—certainly; jale—in the water; vilokya—seeing; vismitäù—astonished; sarve—all; babhuvuù—became; cakitäù—frightened; iva—as if.


When the saw the other universes were like many kuöaja fruits bobbing in the water (of the Käraëa Ocean), they all became frightened and surprised.

kotiço yojanordhvaà vai
puräëäm añöakaà gatäù
divya-prakara-ratnädi-
druma-vånda-manoharam


kotiçaù—millions; yojana—or yojanas; ürdhvam—above; vai—certainly; puräëäm—of cities; añöakam—a group of eight; gatäù—went; divya-prakara—glistening; ratna—jewels;
ädi—beginning with; druma—of trees; vånda—groups; manoharam—charming.


Millions of yojanas higher they came to eight cities charming with glistening jewel-forest groves.

tad-ürdhvaà dadåçur devä
virajäyäs taöaà çubham
taraìgitaà kñauma-çubhraà
sopänair bhäskaraà param


tad-ürdhvam—above them; dadåçuù—saw; deväù—the demigods; virajäyäù—of the Virajä river; taöam—the shore; çubham—glorious; taraìgitam—with waves; kñauma—silk; çubhram—white; sopänaiù—with steps; bhäskaram—splendid; param—greatly.


Higher still the demigods saw the Virajä river's splendid shore, which was splashed by waves white as silk and glorious with many staircases.

taà dåñövä pracalantas te
tat puraà jagmur uttamam
asaìkhya-koöi-martaëòa-
jyotiñäà maëòalaà mahat


tam—that; dåñövä—having seen; pracalantaù—going; te—they; tat puram—to that city; jagmuù—went; uttamam—great; asaìkhya—countless; koöi—millions; martaëòa—of suns;
jyotiñäm—of the splendor; maëòalam—circle; mahat—great.


After seeing this, they entered a city splendid as countless millions of suns.

dåñövä pratäditäkñäs te
tejasä dharñitäù sthitäù
namaskåtvätha tat-tejo
dadhyau viñëv-äjïayä vidhiù


dåñövä—having seen; pratädita—struck; akñäù—eyes; te—they; tejasä—by the splendor; dharñitäù—overcome; namaskåtvä—bowing down; atha—then; tat-tejaù—that splendor; dadhyau—meditated; viñëu—of Lord Viñëu; äjïayä—by the order; vidhiù—Brahmä.


As they looked at its splendor they became overpowered, their eyes struck by the light. By Lord Viñëu's order, Brahmä offered obeisances to that light and meditated on it.


Text 17


taj-jyotir-maëòale 'paçyat
säkaraà dhäma çäntidam
tasmin mahädbhutaà dérghaà
måëäla-dhavalaà param
sahasra-vadanaà çeñaà
dåñövä nemuù suräs tataù


taj-jyotir-maëòale—in the circle of light; apaçyat—he saw; säkaram—having a form; dhäma—an abode; çäntidam—peaceful; tasmin—there; mahä—very; adbhutam—wonderful; dérgham—long; måëäla—lotus stem; dhavalam—white; param—transcendental; sahasra—a thousand; vadanam—faces; çeñam—Lord Çeña; dåñövä—seeing;
nemuù—offered obeisances; suräù—the demigods; tataù—then.


In that circle of light he saw the form of a peaceful transcendental realm. When the demigods saw in that realm the very wonderful white lotus stem of thousand-faced Lord Çeña, they bowed down to offer respects to Him.

tasya—of Him; utsaìge—on the head; mahä—great; lokaù—realm; golokaù—Goloka; loka—by all the worlds; vanditaù—offered obeisances; yatra—where; kälaù—time; kalayatäm—sees; éçvaraù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; dhäma—abodes; mäninäm—with glory; räjan—O king; na—not; prabhavet-may prevail; mäyä—illusion; manaù—mind; cittam—heart; matiù—intelligence; hi—indeed; aham—false ego; na—not;
vikäraù—change; viçati—enters; eva—certainly; na—not; mahän—Mahat-tattva; ca—and; guëäù—the modess of nature; kutaù—from where?


On His head was the transcendental realm of Goloka, which is worshiped by all the worlds, and which is a realm where time, the conqueror of the proud, does not prevail, and where illusion, the material mind, heart, intelligence, and ego, material transformations and the mahat-tattva do enter. How can the modes of nature enter there?

çyämasundara-vigrahäù

nyañedhan kåñëa-pärñadäù


tatra—there; kandarpa—of Kämadeva; lävaëyaù—handsomeness; çyämasundara-vigrahaù—beautiful forms; dväri—at the door; gantum—to go; ca—also; abhyuditäù—standing; nyañedhan—stayed; kåñëa—of Lord Kåñëa; pärñadäù—the asssociates.


Their forms very beautiful, more beautiful than Kämadeva himself, Çré Kåñëa's associates stood at the entrance.

çré-devä ücuù
loka-pälä vayaà sarve
brahma-viñëu-maheçvaräù
çré-kåñëa-darçanärthäya
çakrädyä ägatä iha


çré-deväù ücuù—the demigods said; loka-päläù—protectors of the planets; vayam—we; sarve—all; brahma-viñëu-maheçvaräù—Brahmä, Viñëu, and Çiva; çré-kåñëa—Çré Kåñëa; darçana—seeing; arthäya—for the purpose; çakra—by Indra; ädyäù—headed;' ägatäù—come; iha—here.


The demigods said: We, Brahmä, Viñëu, Çiva, all the protectors of the planets, and the demigods headed by Indra, have come here to see Çré Kåñëa.

tac chrutvä tad-abhipräyaà
çré-kåñëäya sakhé-janäù
ücur deva-pratéhäräù
gatvä cäntaù-puraà param


çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; tat—that; çrutvä—hearing; tad-abhipräyam—the purpose; çré-kåñëäya—for Çré Kåñëa; sakhé-janäù—friends; ücuù—said; deva—demigods; pratiharäù—doorkeepers; gatvä—having gone; ca—also; antaù-puram—inside the palace; param—then.


Çré Närada said: Having heard this, the doorkeepers, girls who were the Lord's friends, went inside the palace and told Çré Kåñëa of (the visitors') wish.

tadä vinirgatä käcic
chatacandränanä sakhé
pétämbarä vetra-hastä
säpåcchad väïhitaà surän


tadä—then; vinirgatä—came out; käcit—a girl; çatacandränanä—Çatacandränanä; sakhé—friend; péta—yellow; ambarä—garments; vetra—a stick; hastä—in hand; sä—she; apåcchat—asked; väïhitam—wished; surän—demigods.


Then a girl named Çatacandränanä, who was dressed in yellow garments, who held a stick in her hand, and who was Çré Kåñëa's friend, came from inside and asked the demigods what they wished.

Çré Çatacandränanä said: All you demigods who have come here, of what universe are you the kings? Tell me and I shall go to the Lord at once.

aho aëòäny utänyäni
näsmäbhir darçitäni ca
ekam aëòaà prajänémo
'tho 'paraà nästi naù çubhe


çré-deväù ücuù—the demgods said; ahaù—Oh; aëòäni—universes; uta—certainly; anyäni—other; na—not; asmäbhiù—by us; darçitäni—shown; ca—and; ekam—one; aëòam—universe; prajänémaù—we know; athaù—then; aparam—another; na—not; asti—is; naù—of us; çubhe—O beautiful one.


The demigods said: We have not seen any other universes. We know only one universe. O beautiful one, there is no universe beyond ours.

brahmadeva luöhantéha
koöiço hy aëòa-räçayaù
teñäà yüyam yathä deväs
tathäëòe 'ëòe påthak påthak


çré-çatacandränanoväca—Çré Çatacandränanä said; brahmadeva—O demigod Brahmä; luöhanti-moving about; iha—here; koöiçaù—millions; hi—indeed; aëòa-räçayaù—universes;
teñäm—of them; yüyam—you; yathä—as; deväù—demigods; tathä—so; aëòe—in an universe; aëòe—in an universe; påthak påthak—variously.


Çré Çatacandränanä said: O demigod Brahmä, millions of universes bob up and down (in the Käraëa ocean). As you are demigods in one universe, so in each each universe there are many demigods.

näma-grämaà na jänétha
kadä vätra samägatäù
jaòa-buddhyä prahåñyadhve
gåhän näpi vinirgatäù


näma-grämam—names; na—not; jänétha—you know; kadä—when?; vä—or; atra—here; samägatäù—come; jaòa—stunted; buddhyä—with intelligence; prahåñyadhve—you are happy; gåhän—homes; na—not; api—even; vinirgatäù—having left.


You do not even know their names. When did you even meet them? Never leaving your own homes, you remain happy with stunted minds.

brahmäëòam ekaà jänanti
yatra jätäs tathä janäù
mañakä ca yathäntaù-sthä
auòumbara-phaleñu vai


brahmäëòam—universe; ekam—one; jänanti—know; yatra—where; jätäù—born; tathä—so; janäù—people; mañakäù—mosquitoes; ca—also; yathä—as; antaù—inside; sthäù—staying; auòumbara-phaleñu—in uòumbara fruits; vai—indeed.


You know one universe. Living entities are born in many universes, like mosquitoes in many uòumbara fruits.

upahäsyaà gatä devä
itthaà tüñëéà sthitäù punaù
cakitän iva tän dåñövä
viñëur vacanam abravét


çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; upahäsyam—the object of jokes; gatäù—attained; deväù—the demigods; ittham—thus; tüñëém—silent; sthitäù—stood; punaù—again; cakitän—frightened; iva—as if; tän—them; dåñövä—seeing; viñëuù—Lord Viñëu; vacanam—words; abravét—said.


Çré Närada said: Mocked in this way, the demigods were silent. Seeing them intimidated, Lord Viñëu spoke some words.

yasminn aëòe påñëigarbho
'vatäro 'bhüt sanätanaù
trivikrama-nakhodbhinne
tasminn aëòe sthitä vayam


çré-viñëuù uväca—Çré Viñëu said; yasmin—in which; aëòe—universe; påñëigarbhaù—Påçnigarbha; avatäraù—incarnation; abhüt—was; sanätanaù—eternal; trivikrama—of Lord Trivikrama; nakha—by the nails; udbhinne—broken; tasmin—in that; aëòe—universe; sthitäù—situated; vayam—we.


Çré Viñëu said: We stay in the universe where eternal Lord Påçnigarbha descended, the universe broken by Lord Trivikrama's toenail.

tac chrutvä taà ca saàçläghya
çéghram antaù-puraà gatä
punar ägatya devebhyo
'py äjïäm dattvä gatäù puram


çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; tat—that; çrutvä—hearing; tam—Him; ca—also; saàçläghya—praising; çéghram—for a long time; antaù-puram—within the palace; gatä—gone; punaù—again; ägatya—returning; devebhyaù—to the demigods; api—also; äjïäm—permission; dattvä—giving; gatäù—went; puram—to the palace.


Çré Närada said: Hearing this, she praised Him for a long time, again entered the palace, returned, and gave the demigods permission (to enter. Then the demigods) entered the palace.

Then the demigods saw Goloka, where the king of mountains, named Govardhana, which was filled with many cows and with gopés garlanded with forest flowers, and which was decorated with räsa-dance circles, is splendidly manifest, where the dark Yamunä river meandered as it wished, (its shores) made with lapis lazuli steps and decorated with millions of gazebos, . . .

våndävanam—Våndävana; bhräjamänam—shining; divya—splendid; druma—trees; latä—and vines; äkulam—filled; citra—colorful; pakñi—birds; madhuvrataiù—with bees; vaàçé—of the flute; vaöa—the banyan tree; viräjitam—splendid.


. . . where the forest of Våndävana, filled with splendid trees and vines, and glorious with bees, colorful birds, and the banyan tree where (Kåñëa) played the flute, was splendidly manifested, . . .

manda-gämé vahaty alam
sahasra-dala-padmänäà
rajo vikñepayan muhuù


puline—on the shore; çétalaù—cool; vayuù—breeze; manda—slowly; gämé—moving; vahati—blows; alam—greatly; sahasra—thousand; dala—petal; padmänäm—of lotuses; rajaù—pollen; vikñepayan—tossing; muhuù—again and again.


. . . where, carrying the pollen of many thousand-petal lotuses, a cool breeze gently blew to the shore, . . .

dva-triàçad-vana-samyutaù
prakara-parikhä-yuto
'ruëäkñaya-vaöäjiraù


madhye—in the midst; nija—own; nikuïjaù—forest grove; asti—is; dva-triàçat—32; vana—forests; samyutaù—endowed; präkära—with a wall; parikhä—and moat; yutaù—endowed; aruëa—red; akñaya—eternal; vaöa—banyan trees; ajiraù—courtyard.


. . . where in the middle is the Lord's personal woodland of 32 forests, which is surrounded by walls and moats and endowed with a reddish courtyard of eternal banyan trees, . . .

saptadhä—seven; padmaräga—ruby; agra—endge; ajira—courtyards; kuòya—walls; vibhüñitaù—decorated; koöi—millions; indu—of moons; maëòala—circle; äkäraiù—with forms; vitänaiù—with canopies; gulikä—with pearls; dyutiù—splendor.


. . . a courtyard decorated with seven walls made of rubies and with a glory of pearls from awnings like many millions of moons, . . .

puñpa-mandira-vartmabhiù
jäta-bhramara-saìgéto
matta-barhi-pika-svanaù


patat—moving; patäkaiù—with flags; divyäbhaiù—glorious; puñpa—of flowers; mandira—palaces; vartmabhiù—with pathways; jäta—born; bhramara—of bees; saìgétaù—song; matta—maddened; barhi—peacocks; pika—and cuckoos; svanaù—the sound.


. . . .where there were splendid flags moving (in the breeze), pathways that were flower palaces, and the singing of many bees and many maddened peacocks and cuckoos, . . .

Bowing down to offer respects, the demigods entered the Lord's personal forest grove, which was a thousand-petal lotus that was a great circle of light.

Very happy, as if plunged in an ocean of bliss, by seeing Him, and their eyes now filled with tears, with folded hands and bowed heads the demigods offered their respectful obeisances to Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
