Kauçalopäkhyäna
The Story of the Kauçalä Women

kauçalänäà gopikänäà
varëanaà çåëu maithila
sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà
çré-kåñëa-caritämåtam
çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; kauçalänäm——of the
women of Kausala; gopikänäm—of thegopés; varëanam—the
description; çåëu—please hear; maithila—O king of
Mithilä; sarva-päpa-haram—removing all sins;
puëyam—sacred; çré-kåñëa-caritämåtam—filled with the nectar
of Sré Kåñëa's pastimes.
Sré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, please hear the story of
the Kauçala womwn that became gopés, a sacred story that removes
all sins and is filled with the nectar of Lord Kåñëa's pastimes.

navopananda-geheñu
jätä räma-varäd vraje
pariëétä gopa-janaiù
ratna-bhüñaëa-bhüñitäù
navopananda-geheñu—in the homes of the nine Upanandas;
jätä—born; räma-varät—by the blessing of Lord Räma;
vraje—in Vraja; pariëétä—married; gopa-janaiù—by the
gopas; ratna-bhüñaëa-bhüñitäù—decorated with jewel
ornaments.
By Lord Rämacandra's blessing they were born in the homes of
the nine Upanandas. Decorated with jewel ornaments, they were
married to various gopas.

pürëa-candra-pratékäçä
nava-yauvana-samyutäù
padminyo haàsa-gamanäù
padma-patra-vilocanäù
pürëa-candra-pratékäçä—splendid as the full moon;
nava-yauvana-samyutäù—in full bloom of youth;
padminyaù—beautiful and graceful as lotus flowers; haàsa-
gamanäù—graceful as swans; padma-patra-vilocanäù—with lotus-
petal eyes.
They were young, glorious as full moons, delicate as lotus
flowers, and graceful as swans. Their eyes were like lotus
petals.

jära-dharmeëa su-snehaà
su-dåòhaà sarvato 'dhikam
cakruù kåñëe nanda-sute
kamanéye mahätmani
jära—of a paramour; dharmeëa—with the nature;
su-sneham——passionate love; su-dåòham—very intense;
sarvataù—than everything; adhikam—greater;
cakruù—did; kåñëe—for Lord Kåñëa; nanda-sute—the son
of Nanda; kamanéye—handsome; mahätmani—the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
They had fallen passionately in love with Nanda's handsome
son Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They loved Him as
a paramour.

täbhiù särdhaà sadä häsyaà
vraja-véthiñu mädhavaù
smitaiù péta-paöädänaiù
karñaëaiù sa cakära ha
täbhiù—them; särdham—with; sadä—always;
häsyam—joking; vraja-véthiñu—on the pathways of Vraja; mädhavaù—Kåñëa; smitaiù—with smiles; péta-
paöädänaiù—with yellow garments; karñaëaiù—with tugging; sa—He; cakära—did; ha—indeed.
Smiling, and tugging at their yellow garments, Kåñëa teased
them and joked with them on the pathways of Vraja.

dadhi-vikrayärthaà yäntyas täù
kåñëa kåñëeti cäbruvan
kåñëe hi prema-samyuktä
bhramantyaù kuïja-maëòale
dadhi—yogurt; vikraya—selling; artham—for the
purpose; yäntyaù—going; täù—they; kåñëa—O
Kåñëa; kåñëa—O Kåñëa; iti—thus; ca—and;
abruvan—said; kåñëe—for Kåñëa; hi—indeed;
prema-samyuktä—full of love; bhramantyaù—wandering;
kuïja-maëòale—in the forest.
In the market selling yogurt, they did not call out,
Yogurt! Yogurt!" Instead they called "Kåñëa! Kåñëa!"
Overcome with love for Kåñëa, they wandered the forests searching
for Him.

khe väyau cägni-jalayor
mahyäà jyotir diçäsu ca
drumeñu jana-våndeñu
täsäà kåñëo hi lakñyate
khe—in space; väyau—in air; ca—and; agni—in
fire; jalayoù—in water; mahyäm—in the mahat-
tattva; jyotiù—in light; diçäsu—in the
directions; ca—and; drumeñu—in the trees;
jana-våndeñu—in the people; täsäm—of them;
kåñëaù—Kåñëa; hi—indeed; lakñyate—is seen.
When they looked at the different objects of the creation
made of ether, air, fire, and water, when they looked in the
different directions, when they looked at the luminaries in the
sky, when they looked at trees, and when they looked at people,
they did not see them. They only saw Kåñëa.

prema-lakñaëa-samyuktäù
çré-kåñëa-håta-mänasäù
añöabhiù sättvikair bhävaiù
sampannäs täç ca yoñitaù
prema-lakñaëa-samyuktäù—filled with love; çré-kåñëa-
håta-mänasäù—their hearts fixed on Kåñëa;
añöabhiù—situated; sättvikair bhävaiù—with ecstatic
love; sampannäù—endowed; täù—they; ca—and; yoñitaù—the women.
They were filled with love for Kåñëa. Kåñëa had stolen their
hearts. They could not help but display many symptoms of love for
Him.

premëä paramahaàsänäà
padavéà samupägatäù
kåñëänandäù pradhävantyo
vraja-véthiñu tä nåpa
premëä—with love; paramahaàsänäm—of the
paramahamsas; padavém—the path;
samupägatäù—taken; kåñëa—of Kåñëa; änandäù—bliss; pradhävantyaù—running; vraja-véthiñu—on the pathways of
Vraja; tä—they; nåpa—O king.
Filled with love, they followed the path of the
paramahaàsas. Filled with bliss, they ran along Vraja's pathways.

jaòä jaòaà na janantyo
jaòonmatta-piçäca-vät
abruvantyo bruvantyo vä
gata-lajjä gata-vyathäù
jaòäù—inert; jaòam—the inert; na—not;
janantyaù—undersatnding; jaòonmatta-piçäca-vät—as if haunted
by a ghost; abruvantyaù—not speaking;
bruvantyaù—speaking; vä—or; gata-lajjä—without
embarrassment; gata-vyathäù—without care.
Sometimes they were stunned, sometimes they could not
understand that inanimate objects were actually not alive,
sometimes they were silent, and sometimes they spoke on and on
without care or shyness.

evaà kåtärthatäà präptas
tan-mayä yäç ca gopikäù
baläd äkåñya kåñëasya
cucumbur mukha-paìkajam
evam—in this way; kåtärthatäm—the real goal of
life; präptaù—attained; tan-mayä—rapt in thought of
Kåñëa; yäù—who; ca—and; gopikäù—gopés;
balät—forcibly; äkåñya—attracting; kåñëasya—of
Kåñëa; cucumbuù—kisssed; mukha-paìkajam—the lotus
mouth.
Rapt in thinking of Kåñëa, they attained the highest goal of
life. Irresistibly attracted to Kåñëa, they could not help but
kiss His lotus lips.

täsäà tapaù kià kathayämi räjan
pürëe pare brahmaëi väsudeve
yäç cakrire prema håd-indriyädyair
visåjya loka-vyavahära-märgam
täsäm—of them; tapaù—austerity; kim—what;
kathayämi—I say; räjan—O king; pürëe—perfect;
pare brahmaëi—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;
väsudeve—Lord Väsudeva; yäù—who; cakrire—did;
prema—love; håd-indriyädyaiù—with the heart and senses; visåjya—abandoning; loka-vyavahära-märgam—the path of
what is ordinarily desirable.
O king, how can I describe the austerities they must have
performed? Abandoning the path of what is ordinarily thought
desireable in this world, with all their heart and senses they
loved Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Text 13
yä räsa-raìge vinidhäya bähuà
kåñëäàsayoù prema-vibhinna-cittäù
cakrur vaçe kåñëam alaà tapas tad
vaktuà na çakto vadanaiù phaëéndraù
yä—who; räsa-raìge—in the arena of the rasa dance; vinidhäya—placing; bähum—an arm; kåñëäàsayoù—on
Kåñëa's shoulders; prema-vibhinna—overcome with love; cittäù—their hearts; cakruù—did; vaçe—in
control; kåñëam—k; alam—greatly;
tapaù—austerity; tat—that; vaktum—to say;
na—not; çaktaù—able; vadanaiù—with many mouths;
phaëéndraù—Lord Seña, the king of serpents.
Overcome with love, and placing an arm around His shoulders
in the räsa dance, they made Kåñëa their surrendered servant.
Even Lord Seña with His many mouths cannot describe the
auterities they must have performed.
Text 14
yogena saìkhyena çubhena karmaëä
nyäyädi-vaiçeñika-tattva-vittamaiù
yat präpyate tac ca padaà videha-räö
sampräpyate kevala-bhakti-bhävataù
yogena—with yoga; saìkhyena—with sankhya;
çubhena—with auspicious; karmaëä—work;
nyäya—nyaya; ädi—beginning with;
vaiçeñika—vaisesika; tattva—the truth; vittamaiù—by
they who know; yat—what; präpyate—is attained;
tat—that; ca—and; padam—state; videha-räö—O king
of Videha; sampräpyate—is attained; kevala-bhakti-
bhävataù—by pure love for Lord Kåñëa.
O king of Videha, whatever good result may be attained by
yoga, saìkhya, good deeds, or the study of logic and philosophy,
is at once attained simply by loving Lord Kåñëa.
Text 15
bhaktyaiva vaçyé harir ädi-devaù
sadä pramäëaà kila cätra gopyaù
saìkhyaà ca yogaà na kåtaà kadäpi
premëaiva yasya prakåtià gatäù syuù
bhaktyä—by devotion and love; eva—indeed;
vaçyé—brought under control; hariù—Kåñëa; ädi-
devaù—th4e Supreme Personality of Godhead; sadä—always; pramäëam—evidence; kila—indeed; ca—and;
atra—here; gopyaù—the gopés; saìkhyam—sankhya;
ca—and; yogam—yoga; na—not; kåtam—done;
kadäpi—at any time; premëä—by love; eva—indeed;
yasya—of whom; prakåtim—the nature; gatäù
syuù—attained.
Love and devotion make Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, into one's surrendered servant. The gopés are the
proof. They followed neither saìkhya nor yoga. Only because they
loved Him did they gain His company.
