Çré Kåñëa-go-cäraëa-varëana

Description of Çré Kåñëa's Herding the Cows

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

gopecchayä räma-kåñëau

gopälau tau babhüvatuù

gäç cärayantau gopälair

vayasyaiç ceratur vane

çré-närada uväca —Çré Närada said; gopa —of ther

gopas; icchayä —by teh desire; räma-kåñëau —Kåñëa and

Balaräma; gopälau —gopas; tau —They;

babhüvatuù —became; gäù —the cows;

cärayantau —herding; gopälaiù —with the gopas;

vayasyaiù —friends; ceratuù —went; vane —in the forest.

Çré Närada said: By the wish of the adult gopas, Kåñëa and

Balaräma were placed in charge of protecting the cows. Herding

the cows with Their gopa friends, Kåñëa and Balaräma would walk

in the forest.

agre påñöhe tadä gävas

carantyaù pärçvayor dvayoù

çré-kåñëasya balasyäpi

paçyantyaù sundaraà mukham

agre —in front; påñöhe —behind; tadä —then;

gävaù —the cpws; carantyaù —going; pärçvayoù —on the

sides; dvayoù —two; çré-kåñëasya —of Çré Kåñëa;

balasya —of Balaräma; api —and; paçyantyaù —seeing; sundaram —handsome; mukham —face.

Walking before, behind, and on both sides, the cows gazed at

Kåñëa and Balaräma's handsome faces.

ghaëöä-maïjéra-jhaìkäraà

kurvantyas tä itas tataù

kiìkiëé-jäla-samyuktä

hema-mälä-lasad-galäù

ghaëöä —bells; maïjéra —anklets;

jhaìkäram —tinkling; kurvantyaù —doing; tä —they;

itaù —here; tataù —and there; kiìkiëé —of small

bells; jäla —with a network; samyuktäù —endowed;

hema —golden; mälä —necklaces; lasat —glistening;

galäù —necks.

The cows wore glittering golden necklaces, a network of

small bells, and tinkling anklets.

muktä-gucchair barhi-picchair

lasat-pucchäccha-keçaraù

sphuratäà nava-ratnänäà

mälä-jälair viräjitaù

muktä —of pearls; gucchaiù —with bunches; barhi-

picchaiù —with peacock feathers; lasat-pucchäccha-

keçaraù —splendid tails; sphuratäm —manifested; nava-

ratnänäm —of nine jewels; mälä-jälaiù —with many

necklaces; viräjitaù —splendid.

Their tails were decorated with peacock feathers and bunches

of pearls. They were splendid with necklaces of nine jewels.

çiro-maëi-manoharäù

hema-raçmi-prabhä-sphürjac-

chåìga-pärçva-praveñöanäù

çåìgayoù —horns; antare —between; räjan —O king; çiro-maëi-manoharäù —neautiful; wityh a crow jewel; hema —gold; raçmi-prabhä —splendor;

sphürjat —shining; çåìga —horn; pärçva —side;

praveñöanäù —entered.

O king, a crown jewel placed between their horns made them

beautiful. Their horns were plated with gold.

ärakta-tilakäù käçcit

péta-pucchärunäìghrayaù

kailäsa-giri-saìkäçäù

çéla-rüpa-mahä-guëäù

ärakta —red; tilakäù —tilaka; käçcit —some;

péta —yellow; puccha —tails; aruëa —red;

aìghrayaù —feet; kailäsa —Kailasa; giri —Mount;

saìkäçäù —splendor; çéla —noble character;

rüpa —beauty; mahä-guëäù —virtues.

Some had yellow tails and red hooves. They were decorated

with red tilaka. They were like many Mount Kailäsas. They had

virtues, good character, and beauty.

sa-vatsä manda-gäminya

üòho-bhäreëa maithila

kuëòoghnyaù päöaläù käçcil

lakñantyo bhavya-mürtayaù

sa-vatsä —with calves; manda-gäminya —walking slowly; üòho-bhäreëa —with full milk-bags; maithila —O King of

Mithila; kuëòoghnyaù —with great udders; päöaläù —red

patala flowers; käçcil —some; lakñantyaù bhavya-

mürtayaù —beautiful forms.

O king of Mithilä, accompanied by their calves, they walked

slowly, their udders full. Some were like great red päöala

flowers. They were very beautiful.

çyämäç ca haritäs tathä

tämrä dhümrä ghana-çyämä

ghana-çyäme gatekñaëäù

käçcit —some; pétä —yellow;

viciträç —multicolored; ca —and; çyämäç —black;

ca —and; haritäù —green; tathä —so;

tämrä —brown; dhümrä —smokey; ghana-çyämä —the color of

clouds; ghana-çyäme —on Kåñëa, who was dark as a cloud; gata —gone; ékñaëäù —eyes.

Some were yellow, some multicolored, some black, some green,

some smoke-colored, and some cloud-colored. All their eyes were

placed on Kåñëa, His form dark as a cloud.

laghu-çåìgyo dérgha-çåìgya

ucca-çåìgyo våñaiù saha

måga-çåìgyo vakra-çåìgyaù

kapilä maìgaläyanäù

laghu —small; çåìgyaù —horns; dérgha —long;

çåìgya —horns; ucca —high; çåìgyaù —horns;

våñaiù —bulls; saha —with; måga —deer;

çåìgyaù —horns; vakra —bent; çåìgyaù —horns;

kapilä —brown; maìgaläyanäù —auspicious.

Some had short horns, some long horns, some high horns, some

bent horns, and some horns like a deer's antlers. Some were with

many bulls. Some were brown and beautiful.

vékñantyo 'pi vane vane

carantyaù kåñëa-pärçvayoù

çädvalam —grass; komalam —soft;

käntam —desirable; vékñantyaù —seeing; api —also;

vane —in forest; vane —after forest;

koöiçaù —millions; koöiçaù —on millions; gävaù —of

cows; carantyaù —herded; kåñëa-pärçvayoù —by Kåñëa's

side.

Searching for tender and delicious grasses, millions and

millions of cows walked at Kåñëa's side through forest after

forest.

Its Yamunä shore very pure and sacred, and its groves

decorated with many dark tamäla trees and many beautiful népa,

nimba, kadamba, praväla, panasa, kadalé, kovidära, mango, jambu,

bilva, açvattha, and kapittha trees, as well as many mädhavé

vines, beautiful in the springtime, and its glory eclipsing the

nandana, sarvatobhadra, and caitraratha forests of heaven,

transcendental Våndävana forest was splendidly manifest.

In Våndävana forest, on the beautiful hill named Govardhana,

which was made of precious gems, had many glorious caves and

swiftly-moving streams, and was filled with many beautiful

mandära, çrékhaëòa, badaré, rambhä, devadäru, vaöa, paläça,

plakña, açoka, ariñöa, arjuna, kadambaka, pärijäta, päöala,

campaka, karaïja, and çyäma-indrayava trees, and many

kalakaëöhas, kokilas, puàs-kokilas, and peacocks, Kåñëa wandered

from forest to forest as He herded the cows.

O king, in Våndävana, Madhuvana, Tälavana, Kumudvana,

Bähulavana, Divya-kämavana, on the summit and slopes of

Nandéçvara Hill, in beautiful Kokilavana, which was filled with

the singing of cuckoos, in beautiful Kuçavana, which was filled

with many flowering vines, in beautiful and sacred Bhadravana, in

Bhäëòéropavana, in Lohärgala, in shore after shore by the Yamunä,

and in forest after forest, handsome Kåñëa, in yellow garments,

dressed as a dancer, holding a stick, decorated with peacock

feathers, a crown, and many garlands, playing His flute, and

delighting the gopés, was splendidly manifest.

çré-nanda-vrajam aviçat

agre —in front; kåtvä —placing; gaväm —the cows; våndam —multitude; säyam-käle —in the evening;

hariù —Kåñëa; svayam —personally; rägaiù —with many

melodies; samérayan —playing; vaàçém —the flute;

çré-nanda-vrajam —to the gopa village of Nanda; aviçat-

entered.

Placing the cows in front and playing many melodies on His

flute, Kåñëa returned to Nanda's village in the evening.

çrutvä —hearing; çré-vaàçévaöa-märgataù —from the path to

Vamsivata; go-rajobhiù —with the dust of the cows;

nabhaù —the air; vyaptam —filled; vékñya —seeing;

gehät —from their homes; vinirgatäù —left; düré-

kartum —to put far away; hy —indeed;

ädhibädhäm —anxiety; ähartum —to attain;

sukham —happiness; uttamam —the highest; vismartum —to

forget; na —not; samarthäù —able; tam —Him;

drañöum —to see; gopyaù —the gopés; samäyayuù —went.

Hearing the sound of the flute, and seeing the cows' dust

fill the sky along the Vaàçévaöa path, the gopés, to put their

anxieties far away and to taste the highest happiness, and unable

to forget Him, went to see Kåñëa.

May Lord Kåñëa, who did not leave the path, who slowly

brought the cows with Him, whose glance was like a lion's, whose

playfulness was like a baby elephant's, whose eyes were lotus

petals, who was the object of the gopés' glances, who was

decorated with cows' dust, who had handsome black hair, who wore

golden armlets, who was glorious with a crown, who shot arrows of

crooked glances from large eyes that seemed to touch His ears,

whose jasmine-garland was decorated with cows' dust, who wore the

whorl of a blossoming lotus on His ear, who wore yellow garments,

who played the flute, and who removed the earth's great burden,

protect you all.
