Çré Bahuläçva said; O sage, O lord, what did they do when they saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kåñëa, who is greater than the greatest? Please be kind and tell me.

çré-närada uväca
sarveñaà paçyataà teñäà
vaikuëöho 'pi haris tataù
utthäyäñöa-bhujaù säkñäl
léno 'bhüt kåñëa-vigrahe


çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; sarveñam—of all; paçyataà—looking; teñäà—of them; vaikuëöho—Kåñëa; api—also; haris—Lord Hari; tataù—then; utthäya—rising; äñöa-bhujaù—with eight arms; säkñät—directly; léno—entered; abhüt—became; kåñëa-vigrahe—in Kåñëa's form.


Çré Närada said: As everyone looked on, Lord Hari, the eight-armed master of Vaikuëöha, appeared and merged in the the body of Lord Kåñëa.

nåsiàhas cäëòa-vikramaù
koöi-sürya-pratékäço
léno 'bhüt kåñëa-tejasi


tadä—then; eva—indeed; ca—also; ägataù—came; pürëo—perfect; nåsiàhas—Nåsiàha; cäëòa-vikramaù—ferocious; koöi-sürya-pratékäço—splendid as millions of suns; léno—merged; abhüt—became; kåñëa-tejasi—in Lord Kåñëa's effulgence.


The perfect, ferocious, and powerful Lord Nrsiàha, who was effulgent as millions of suns, merged in Lord Kåñëa's effulgence.

rathe lakña-haye çubhre
sthitaç cägataväàs tataù
çvetadvépädhipo bhümä
sahasra-bhuja-maëòitaù


rathe—in a chariot; lakña—with a hundred thousand; haye—horses; çubhre—splendid; sthitaç—standing; ca—also; ägatavän—arrived; tataù—then; çvetadvépa-adhipo—the master of Çvetadvépa; bhümä—the Lord; sahasra-bhuja-maëòitaù—decorated with a thousand arms.


Then the master of Çvetadvépa, who was decorated with a thousand arms, came in a splendid chariot drawn by a hundred thousand horses.

so 'pi çré-kåñëa-vigrahe


çriyä—the goddess of fortune; yuktaù—with; sva—own; äyudha—with weapons; äòhyaù—opulent; pärñadaiù—by associates; pariñevitaù—served; sampraléno—merged; babhüva—became; äçu—at once;so—he; api—also; çré-kåñëa-vigrahe—in Çré Kåñëa's form.


Opulent with many weapons, accompanied by the goddess of fortune, and served by many associates, He suddenly merged in the body of Çré Kåñëa.

Then, holding a bow and arrows, glorious with Sétä, and accompanied by His brothers, lotus-eyed Lord Rämacandra came in a golden chariot that was effulgent as a hundred million suns, (decorated) with swaying cämaras, opulent with countless monkey-kings, rumbling with ten thousand wheels, (decorated with) ten thousand flags, and (pulled by) ten thousand horses, and merged in the body of Lord Kåñëa.

tadä—then; eva—indeed; ca—also; ägataù—came; säkñäd—directly; yajïas—Yajïa; näräyaëo—Näräyaëa; hariù—Hari; prasphurat-pralayäöopa-jvalad-agni—in the blazing fires of cosmic devastation; çikhä—a flame; upamaù—like; rathe—ona chariot; jyotirmaye—effulgent; dåçye—beautiful; dakñiëä—with His consort Dekñiëä; òhyaù—opulent; sura—of the demigods; éçvaraù—the master; so—He; api—even; léno—merged; babhüva—became; äçu—suddenly; çré-kåñëe—in Çré Kåñëa; çyäma—dark; vigrahe—form.


Then Lord Yajïa, who is known as Näräyaëa and Hari, who is glorious like a flame in the fire of cosmic devastation, who is the master of the demigods, and who is glorious with His consort Dakñiëa, came in a splendid and beautiful chariot and suiddenly merged in the dark form of Lord Kåñëa.

Then Lord Nara-Näräyaëa, whose eyes were large, who had four arms, who was dressed as a sage, who was splendid like a dark cloud, whose matted hair was a lightning flash, who observed an unbroken vow (of celibacy), and who was surrounded by splendid multitudes of the kings of sages, suddenly merged in the handsome dark form of Lord Kåñëa as everyone looked on, their hearts filled with wonder.

paripürëatamaà säkñät—the original Supreme Personality of Godhead çré-kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; ca—also; svayam—personally; prabhum—the Lord; jïätvä—knowing; deväù—the demigods; stutim—prayers; cakruù—did; paraà—great; vismayam—wonder; ägataù—attained.


Filled with wonder, and now understanding that Çré Kåñëa is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, the demigods offered many prayers.

çré-devä ücuù
kåñëäya pürëa-puruñäya parät paräya
yajïeçvaräya para-käraëa-käraëäya
rädhä-varäya paripürëatamäya säkñäd-
goloka-dhäma-dhiñaëäya namaù parasmai


çré-deväs—the demigods; ücuù—said; kåñëäya—to Kåñëa; pürëa-puruñäya—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; parät—than the greatest; paräya—greater; yajïeçvaräya—the Lord of sacrifices; para-käraëa-käraëäya—the cause of causes; rädhä-varäya—the lover of Rädhä; paripürëatamäya—the original Lord; säkñäd-goloka-dhäma-dhiñaëäya—who resides in Goloka;namaù—obeisances; parasmai—to the Supreme.


The demigods said: Obeisances to Çré Kåñëa, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, greater than the greatest, the master of sacrifices, the cause of causes, the lover of Rädhä, the most perfect, and the Lord who resides in Goloka.

yogeçvaraù kila vadanti mahaù paraà tväà
tatraiva sätvatatamäù kåta-vigrahaà ca
asmäbhir adya viditaà padayor dvayaà te
tasmai namo 'stu mahasäà pataye parasmai


yogeçvaraù—the masters of yoga; kila—indeed; vadanti—say; mahaù—effulgence; paraà—supreme; tvaà—You; tatra—there; eva—indeed; sätvatatamäù—the devotees; kåta—done; vigrahaà—form; ca—also; asmäbhir—by us; adya—today; viditaà—known; padayor—of the feet; dvayaà—pair; te—to You; tasmai—Him; namo—obeisances; astu—may be; mahasäà—of the effulgence; pataye—the master; parasmai—to the Supreme.


The masters of yoga say You are the Brahman effulgence, and the great devotees say You have a form. Today we understand Your feet. Obeisances to You, the master of the Brahman effulgence.


Text 17


vyaìgyena vä na na hi lakñaëayä kadäpi
sphoöena yac ca kavayo na viçanti mukhyäù
nirdeçya-bhäva-rahitaà prakåteù paraà ca
tväà brahma nirguëam ajaà çaraëaà vrajämaù


vyaìgyena—by implication; vä—or; na—not; na—not; hi—indeed; lakñaëayä—indirectly; kadäpi—ever; sphoöena—manifest; yat—what; ca—and; kavayo—philosophers; na—do not; viçanti—enter; mukhyäù—primary meaning; nirdeçya—indescribable; bhäva—nature; rahitaà—without; prakåteù—to matter; param—superior; ca—and; tvam—You; brahma—the greatest Brahman; nirguëam—without qualities; ajaà—unborn; çaraëaà—shelter; vrajämaù—we go.


We take shelter of You, the unborn Supreme, who are free from the material modes, who are beyond the world of matter, and who cannot be described. The greatest philosophers cannot describe You, either directly, indirectly, or by the most oblique hint.

tväà brahma kecid avayanti pare ca kälaà
kecit prasäìkhyam apare bhuvi karma-rüpam
pürve ca yogam apare kila kartå-bhävam
anyoktibhir na viditaà çaraëaà gatäù smaù


tväm—You; brahma—the greatest; kecid—some; avayanti—teach; pare—others; ca—also; kälaà—time; kecit—some; prasäìkhyam—the sum of everything; apare—others; bhuvi—in the world; karma—of karma; rüpam—the form; pürve—the first; ca—also; yogam—yoga; apare—others; kila—indeed; kartå-bhävam—the doer; anya—of others; uktibhir—by the words; na—not; viditam—known; çaraëam—shelter; gatäù—gone; smaù—we.


Some teach that You are the greatest, some that You are time, some that You are the sum total of everything, some that You are karma, some that You are yoga, and some that You are the first cause. We take shelter of You, who cannot be perfectly known by all their words.

çreyas-karéà bhagavatas tava päda-seväà
hitvätha tértha-yajanädi tapaç caranti
jïänena ye ca viditä bahu-vighna-saìghaiù
santäòitäù kim u bhavanti na te kåtärthäù


çreyas—the good; karéà—doing; bhagavatas—of the Lord; tava—of You; päda—of the feet; seväà—the service; hitvä—abandoning; atha—then; tértha—pilgrimage; yajana—sacrifice; ädi—beginning; tapas—austerity; caranti—perform; jïänena—with knowledge; ye—who; ca—and; viditä—understood; bahu-vighna-saìghaiù—with many great obstacles; santäòitäù—struck; kim u—how miserably; bhavanti—are; na—not; te—they; kåtärthäù—successful.


O Lord, they who reject the auspicious service of Your feet, and instead visit holy places, perform sacrifices and austerities, and try to cultivate spiritual knowledge are beaten by a host of obstacles. How miserably will they fail.


Text 20


vijïäpyam adya kim u deva açeña-säkñé
yaù sarva-bhüta-hådayeñu viräjamänaù
devair namadbhir amaläçaya-mukta-dehais
tasmai namo bhagavate puruñottamäya


vijïäpyam—to be known; adya—today; kim u—how?; deva—O Lord; açeña—of everything; säkñé—the witness; yaù—who; sarva—of all; bhüta—living entities; hådayeñu—in the hearts; viräjamänaù—manifest; devair—by the demigods; namadbhir—bowing down; amala—pure; äçaya—hearts; mukta—liberated; dehais—whose bodies; tasmai—to Him; namo—obeisances; bhagavate—to the Lord; puruñottamäya—the Supreme Person.


What request shall we place before You today? The pure-hearted devotees whose forms are not material offer respectful obeisances to You, the Supreme Personality of Godhead who, the witness of everything, stays in everyone's heart.


Text 21


yo rädhikä-hådaya-sundara-candra-häraù
çré-gopikä-nayana-jévana-müla-häraù
goloka-dhäma-dhiñaëa-dhvaja ädi-devaù
sa tvaà vipatsu vibudhän paripähi pähi


yo—who; rädhikä—of Rädhä; hådaya—in the heart; sundara—handsome; candra—moon; häraù—necklace; çré-gopikä—of the gopés; nayana—of the eyes; jévana—life; müla—root; häraù—taking; goloka-dhäma-dhiñaëa—of the abode of Goloka; dhvajas—the flag; ädi—the original; devaù—Lord; sas—He; tvam—You; vipatsu—in calamities; vibudhän—the demigods; paripähi—please protect; pähi—please protect.


O Lord, You are a necklace of moons Çré Rädhä places over Her heart. You are the source of life for the gopés' eyes. You are a flag over Goloka. You are the original Supreme Personality of Godhead. O Lord, from all calamities please protect, please protect the demigods.

gopäla-veña-kåta-nitya-vihära-léla

govardhanoddharaëa durdhara-dharma-dhärin


våndävana—of Våndävana; éça—O Lord; giriräja—of the king of mountains; pate—O Lord; vraja—of Vraja; éça—O Lord; gopäla-veña—as a cowherd boy; kåta—done; nitya—eternal; vihära-léla—pastimes; rädhä—of Rädhä; pate—O Lord; çrutidhara—of the great philosophers; adhipate—O Lord; uddhara—please rescue; tvaà—You; govardhana—of Govardhana Hill; uddharaëa—O lifter; durdhara—impossible dharma-dhärin—the doer.


O king of Våndävana, O king of the mountains' king, O king of Vraja, O king who enjoys cowherd-boy pastimes eternally, O king of Rädhä, O king of the great philosophers, O lifter of Govardhana Hill, O Lord who can do any impossible task, please save us!

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; iti—thus; ukto—addressed; bhagavän säkñät—Supreme Personality of Godhead; çré-kåñëo—Çré Kåñëa; gokuleçvaraù—the king of Gokula; pratyäha—replied; praëatän—offering obeisances; devän—to the demigods; megha-gambhérayä—thunder; girä—with a voice.


Çré Närada said: Addressed in this way, Çré Kåñëa, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the king of Gokula, in a voice of thunder replied to the demigods prostrate before Him.

he sura-jyeñöha he çambho
deväù çåëuta mad-vacaù
yädaveñu ca janyadhvam
aàçaiù strébhir mad-äjïayä


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; he—O; sura—of the demigods; jyeñöha—eldest; he—O; çambho—Çiva; deväù—O demigods; çåëuta—please hear; mad—My; vacaù—words; yädaveñu—in the Yadu dynasty; ca—also; janyadhvam—please take birth; aàçaiù—by partial expansions; strébhir—with your wives; mad—by My; äjïayä—order.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Çiva, O eldest of the demigods, O demigods, hear My words. By My order you and your wives should take birth, by your aàça expansions, in the family of the Yadus.

ahaà cävatariñyämi
hariñyämi bhuvo bharam
kariñyämi ca vaù käryaà
bhaviñyämi yadoù kule


aham—I; ca—also; avatariñyämi—will descend; hariñyämi—I will remove; bhuvo—of the earth; bharam—the burden; kariñyämi—I will do; ca—also; vaù—of you; käryaà—the work; bhaviñyämi—I will be; yadoù—of the Yadus; kule—in the family.


I will also descend. I will remove the earth's burden. I will perform the work you (request). I will take birth in the Yadus' family.


Text 26


vedä me vacanaà viprä
mukhaà gävas tanur mama
aìgäni devatä yüyaà
sädhavo hy asavo hådi


vedäù—the Vedas; me—My; vacanam—word; vipräs—the brähmaëas; mukhaà—mouth; gävas—the cows; tanur—body; mama—My; aìgäni—limbs; devatäs—demigods; yüyaà—you; sädhavo—the saintly devotees; hi—indeed; asavo—the breath; hådi—in the heart.


The Vedas are My words. The brähmaëas are My mouth. The cows are My body. You demigods are My limbs. My devotees are the life-breath in My heart.

yuge yuge ca badhyeta
yadä päkhäëòibhir janaiù
dharmaù kratur dayä sakñat
tad ätmänaà såjämy aham


yuge yuge—millennium after millennium; ca—also; badhyeta—stopped; yadä—when; päkhäëòibhir janaiù—by blasphemers; dharmaù—religion; kratur—sacrifice; dayä—mercy; sakñat—directly; tad—then; ätmänam—Myself; såjämi—appear; aham—I.


Millennium after millennium, whenever the blasphemers stop religion, sacrifice, and mercy, I descend Myself.

rädhä patim präha viyoga-vihvalä
dävägninä däva-lateva mürchitä-
çru-kampa-romäïcita-bhäva-samvåtä


çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; iti—thus; uktavantam—spoken; jagad—of the universe; éçvaraà—the master; harià—Lord Kåñëa; rädhä—Çré Rädhä; patim—Her master; präha—said; viyoga—separation; vihvalä—agitated; dävägninä—with a forest fire; däva—on fire; latä—a vine; iva—like; mürchitä—fainted; açru—tears; kampa—trembling; romäïcita—hairs standing erect; bhäva—ecstasy; samvåtä—possessing.


Çré Närada said: When Her husband, Lord Kåñëa, the master of the universes, had spoken, Çré Rädhä, overcome with fear of being separated from Him, and now like a flowering vine burning in a great forest fire, weeping, trembling, about to faint unconscious, and the hairs of her body erect, spoke to Him.

bhuvo bharaà hartum alaà bhuvaà vraja
kåtaà paraà me çapathaà çåëuñva tat
gate tvayi präëa-pate ca vigrahaà
kadäcid atraiva na dhärayämy aham


çré-rädhä uväca—Çré Rädhä said; bhuvo—of the earth; bharam—the burden; hartum—to remove; alam—greatly; bhuvaà—to the earth; vraja—go; kåtam—done; param—great; me—of Me; çapathaà—vow; çåëuñva—hear; tat—that; gate—gone; tvayi—when You; präëa—of life; pate—O Lord; ca—also; vigrahaà—form; kadäcid—ever; atra—here; eva—indeed; na—not; dhärayämi—maintain; aham—I.


Çré Rädhä said: Go to the earth and remove its burden! Hear My great vow. O Lord of My life, when You are gone I will not keep my body (alive) in this place.

yadätha me tvaà çapathaà na manyase
dvitéya-väraà pravadämi väk-patham
präëaç ca me gantum atéva-vihvalaù
karpüra-dhüli-kaëavad bhaviñyati


yadä—when; atha—then; me—My; tvam—You; çapathaà—vow; na—not; manyase—think; dvitéya—a second; väram—time; pravadämi—I speak; väk-patham—the words; präëas—life; ca—also; me—of Me; gantum—to go; atéva-vihvalaù—very eager; karpüra-dhüli-kaëavad—like particles of camphor; bhaviñyati—will be.


If You do not believe My words, I will say them a second time. (If You go) then My life, yearning to depart, will become like camphor dust.

tvayä saha gamiñyämi
mä çokaà kuru rädhike
hariñyämi bhuvo bhäraà
kariñyämi vacas tava


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; tvayä—You; saha—with; gamiñyämi—I will go; mä—don't; çokaà—unhappiness; kuru—do; rädhike—O Rädhä; hariñyämi—I will remove; bhuvo—of the earth; bhäraà—the burden; kariñyämi—I will fulfill; vacas—words; tava—Your.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: I will go with You. O Rädhä, don't lament. I will remove the earth's burden and I will keep Your word.

Çré Rädhä said: My heart cannot be happy where there is no Våndävana forest, no Yamunä river, and no Govardhana Hill.

preñayäm äsa bhüpari


çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; veda-näga—47; kroça—kroças; bhümià—land; sva-dhamnaù—own abode; çré-hariù—Çré Kåñëa; svayam—personally; govardhanam—Govardhana; ca—and; yamunä—Yamunä; preñayäm äsa—sent; bhü-upari—to the earth.


Çré Närada said: Then Lord Kåñëa sent to the earth Govardhana Hill, the Yamunä river, and a 47 kroça portion of His abode.


Note: One kroça equals two miles.

tadä—then; brahmä—Brahmä; deva-gaëair—with the demigods; natvä—bowing; natvä—and bowing; punaù—again; punaù—and again; paripürëatamaà säkñät—to the original Supreme Personality of Godhead çré-kåñëaà—Çré Kåñëa; samuväca ha—said.


Bowing and bowing again and again with the demigods, Brahmä addressed the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, Çré Kåñëa.

Çré Brahmä said: Where will I take birth? Where will You take birth? Where will the (demigods) take birth? In what homes? With what names?


Text 36


çré-bhagavän uväca
vasudevasya devakyäà
bhaviñyämi paraù svayam
rohiëyäà mat-kalä çeño
bhaviñyati na saàçayaù


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; vasudevasya—of Vasudeva; devakyäà—in Devaké; bhaviñyämi—I will be; paraù—transcendental; svayam—personally; rohiëyäm—in Rohiëé; mat-kalä—my kalä expansion; çeño—Çeña; bhaviñyati—will be; na—no; saàçayaù—doubt.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: I will take birth in Devaké from Vasudeva. My transcendental kalä expansion Çeña will take birth in Rohiëé. Of this there is no doubt.


Text 37


çréù säkñäd rukmiëé bhaiñmé
çivä jämbavaté tathä
satyä ca tulasé bhümau
satyabhämä vasundharä


çréù—the goddess of fortune; säkñäd—directly; rukmiëé—Rukmiëé; bhaiñmé—the daughter of Bhéñmaka; çivä—Pärvaté; jämbavaté—Jämbavaté; tathä—so; satyä—Satyä; ca—also; tulasé—Tulasé; bhümau—on the earth; satyabhämä—Satyabhämä; vasundharä—Vasundharä.


The goddess of fortune will take birth as Bhéñmaka's daughter Rukmiëé. Lord Çiva's consort will take birth as Jämbavaté. Tulasé will take birth as Satyä and Vasundharä as Satyabhämä.


Text 38


dakñiëä lakñmaëä caiva
kälindé virajä tathä
bhadrä hrér mitravindä ca
jähnavé päpa-näçiné


dakñiëä—Dakñiëä; lakñmaëä—Lakñmaëä; ca—also; eva—indeed; kälindé—Kälindé; virajä—Virajä; tathä—so; bhadrä—Bhadrä; hrér—Hré; mitravindä—Mitravindä; ca—also; jähnavé—Jähnavé; päpa—sins; näçiné—destroying.


Dakñiëä will become Lakñmaëä, Virajä will become Kälindé, Hré will become Bhadrä, and Jähnavé, who destroys sins, will become Mitravindä.

rukmiëyäà kämadevaç ca
pradyumna iti viçrutaù
bhaviñyati na sandehas
tasya tvaà ca bhaviñyasi


rukmiëyäà—in Rukmiëé; kämadevas—Kämadeva; ca—and; pradyumna—Pradyumna; iti—thus; viçrutaù—known; bhaviñyati—will be; na—no; sandehas—doubt; tasya—of him; tvaà—you; ca—and; bhaviñyasi—will be.


(Born) in Rukmiëé, Kämadeva will be known as Pradyumna. You will take birth as his son. Of this there is no doubt.

nando droëo vasuù säkñäd
yaçodä sä dharä småtä
våñabhänuù sucandraç ca
tasya bharyä kalävaté


nando—Nanda; droëo—Droëa; vasuù—Vasu; säkñäd—directly; yaçodä—Yaçodä; sä—she; dharä—Dharä; småtä—remembered; våñabhänuù—Våñabhänu; sucandras—Sucandra; ca—and; tasya—of him; bharyä—the wife; kalävaté—Kalävaté.


The Vasu Droëa will become Nanda, and Dharä will be remembered as Yaçodä. Sucandra will take birth as Våñabhänu, and his wife Kalävaté will also take birth.


Text 41


bhümau kértir iti khyätä
tasyäà rädhä bhaviñyati
sadä räsaà kariñyämi
gopébhir vraja-maëòale


bhümau—on the earth; kértir—Kérti; iti—thus; khyätä—known; tasyäm—in her; rädhä—Rädhä; bhaviñyati—will take birth; sadä—always; räsam—the räsa dance; kariñyämi—I will do; gopébhir—with the gopés; vraja—of Vraja; maëòale—in the circle.


On the earth she will be known as Kérti. In her Rädhä will take birth. Again and again I will perform the räsa dance in the circle of Vraja with the gopés.
