Kapiöaìka-någa-küpa-gopé-bhümi-mähätmya
The Glories of Någa-küpa and Gopé-bhümi
Text 1
tasmin girau yajïa-térthaà
raivatena kåtaà purä
yatra kåtvä yajïam ekaà
koöi-yajïa-phalaà labhet
tasmin—in this; girau—mountain; yajïa-
tértham—Yajna-tértha; raivatena—by King Raivata;
kåtam—made; purä—before; yatra—where;
kåtvä—having made; yajïam—yajna; ekam—one; koöi-yajïa-phalam—the result of ten million yajnas; labhet—attains.
On this mountain King Raivata built a yajïa-tértha.
By performing a yajïa at this place one attains the
result of performing ten million yajïas.

kapiöaìkaà näma térthaà
kapi-päta-samudbhavam
girau raivatake räjan
sarva-päpa-praëäçanam
kapiöaìkam—Kapiöaìka; näma—named;
tértham—tirtha; kapi—of a monkey; päta—from the
jumping; samudbhavam—manifested; girau—on the
mountain; raivatake—Raivata; räjan—O king;
sarva-päpa-praëäçanam—destroying all sins.
O king, this holy place, which destroys all sins, was named
Kapiöaìka because it was created by the jumping of a gorilla
(kapi).

bhaumäsura-sakho duñöo
dviviòo näma vänaraù
märito yatra rämeëa
muñöinä vajra-pätinä
bhaumäsura-sakhaù—a freind of Bhaumasura; duñöaù—a
demon; dviviòaù—Dvivida; näma—named; vänaraù—a
gorilla; märitaù—killed; yatra—where; rämeëa—by
Balaräma; muñöinä—with a fist; vajra-pätinä—a
thunderbolt.
With His thunderbolt fist, Lord Balaräma killed Bhaumäsura's
friend, the demon gorilla Dviviòa, in this place.
Text 4
sadyo muktià gataù so 'pi
satäà helanavän api
tatra snätuà sadä devä
ägacchanti nareçvara
sadyaù—at once; muktim—liberation;
gataù—attained; so 'pi—he; satäm—to the devotees; helanavän—an offender; api—even; tatra—there; snätum—to bathe; sadä—again and again; deväù—the
demigods; ägacchanti—come; nareçvara—O great king.
Even though he had offended many siantly persons, that
gorilla attained liberation at that place. O great king, the
demigods regularly come to bathe there.

kalaviìkasya yäträyäà
koöi-go-däna-jaà phalam
etasya dvi-guëaà puëyaà
daëòakäkhye vane çubhe
kalaviìkasya—of Kalaviìka-tértha; yäträyäm—in
apilgrimage; koöi-go-däna-jam—born from giving ten million
cows in charity; phalam—the result; etasya—of
that; dvi-guëam—double; puëyam—piety;
daëòakäkhye—in Daëòaka Forest; vane—in the forest;
çubhe—sacred.
By going on pilgrimage to Kalaviìka-tértha and giving ten
million cows in charity one attains a great pious result. This
pious result is doubled when the pilgrimage and charity are
performed in sacred Daëòakäraëya.

tasmäc catur-guëaà puëyaà
saindhaväkhye mahä-vane
jambu-märge païca-guëaà
puëyaà präpnoti mänavaù
tasmät—from that; catur-guëam—four times as great; puëyam—pious result; saindhaväkhye—named Saindhava; mahä-vane—in the great forest; jambu-märge—at jambu-
märga; païca-guëam—five times as great;
puëyam—piety; präpnoti—attains; mänavaù—a human.
A person attains a pious result is four times as great at
Saindhaväraëya and five times greater than that at Jambu-märga.

tasmäd daça-guëaà puëyaà
puñkaräkhye vane småtaà
tasmäd daça-guëaà puëyaà
utpalävärta-yätrayä
tasmät—from that; daça-guëam—ten times;
puëyam—piety; puñkaräkhye—named Puñkara; vane—in the
forest; småtam—considered; tasmät—from that;
daça-guëam—ten times; puëyam—piety; utpalävärta-
yätrayä—by a pilgrimage to Utpalävarta.
That pious result is ten times greater than that at
Puñkaräraëya and ten times greater again at Utpalävärta.

tasmäc ca naimiñäraëye
puëyaà daça-guëaà småtam
tasmäc chata-guëaà puëyaà
kapiöaìke videha-räö
tasmät—than that; ca—and; naimiñäraëye—at
Naimiñäraëya; puëyam—piety; daça-guëam—ten times; småtam—considered; tasmät—than that; çata-guëam—a
hundred times; puëyam—piety; kapiöaìke—at
Kapiöaìka; videha-räö—O king of Videha.
That pious result is ten times greater again at Naimiñäraëya
and hundred times greater than that at Utpalävärta.

någa-küpaà dvärakäyäà
térthänäà tértham uttamam
yasya darçana-mätreëa
vipra-vadhyät pramucyate
någa-küpam—Någa-küpa; dvärakäyäm—at Dvärakä;
térthänäm—of holy placed; tértham—holy place;
uttamam—best; yasya—of which; darçana-mätreëa—simply
by seeing; vipra-vadhyät—from the sin of killing a
brähmaëa; pramucyate—is freed.
Någa-küpa at Dvärakä is the best of holy places. Simply by
seeing it one becomes free of the sin of killing a brähmaëa.
Text 10
ajïänäd brähmaëasyäpi
gäà dadau brähmaëäya saù
tena päpena küpe vai
kåkaläsa-vapur-dharaù
ajïänät—from ignorance; brähmaëasya—of a
brähmaëa; api—also; gäm—a cow; dadau—gave; brähmaëäya—to a brähmaëa; saù—he; tena—by that; päpena—sin; küpe—in a well; vai—indeed;
kåkaläsa—of a lizard; vapuù—the form;
dharaù—manifesting.
Unaware of what he was doing, King Någa gave in charity to a
brähmaëa a cow that belonged to another brähmaëa. For this sin he
became a lizard in a well.
Text 11
någo 'pi däninäà çreñöhaù
patito 'tha catur-yugam
çré-kåñëena tad-uddhäraù
kåto vai paçyatäà satäm
någaù—Någa; api—also; däninäm—of
philanthropists; çreñöhaù—the best;
patitaù—fallen; atha—then; catur-yugam—for four
yugas; çré-kåñëena—by Lord Kåñëa; tad-
uddhäraù—deliverance; kåtaù—done; vai—indeed;
paçyatäm—looking on; satäm—the saintly devotees.
In this way King Någa, who had been the best of charitable
men, fell into a wretched condition for four yugas. Finally, as
the saintly devotees looked on, he was delivered by Lord Kåñëa.

haram—removing sins; param—great.
From that day Någa-küpa (Någa's Well) has been one of the
great pilgrimage places on this earth. A person who on the full
moon day of the month of Kärttika (October-November) bathes at
Någa-küpa becomes free of the sins performed in ten million
births. Of this there is no doubt. A person who at Någa-küpa
gives in charity a single cow attains the pious result of giving
ten million cows. Of that there is no doubt. Now please hear the
glories of Gopé-bhümi. Hearing its glories removes all sins.

yasya çravaëa-mätreëa
karma-bandhät pramucyate
gopénäà yatra väso 'bhüt
tena gopé-bhuvaù småtaù
yasya—of which; çravaëa-mätreëa—simply by hearing; karma-bandhät—from the bonds of karma; pramucyate—is
released; gopénäm—of the gopés; yatra—where;
väsaù—residence; abhütdid; tena—by that; gopé-
bhuvaù—the land of the gopés; småtaù—is considered.
Simply by hearing about Gopé-bhümi, which is so named
because the gopés resided there, one become free from the bondage
of karma.

gopy-aìgaräga-sambhütaà
gopé-candänäm uttamam
gopé-candana-liptäìgo
gaìgä-snäna-phalaà labhet
gopy—of the gopés; aìgaräga—from the cosmetics;
sambhütam—manifested; gopé-candänäm—gopé-candana;
uttamam—supreme; gopé-candana—of gopé-candana;
lipta—anointed; aìgaù—limbs; gaìgä-snäna-phalam—the
result of bathing in the Gaìgä; labhet—one attains.
In Gopé-bhümi gopé-candana was manifested from the gopés'
cosmetics. A person who marks his limbs with gopé-candana tilaka
attains the result of bathing in the Gaìgä.

mahä-nadénäà snänasya
puëyaà tasya dine dinegopé-candana-müdräbhir
müdrito yaù sadä bhavet
mahä-nadénäm—of great sacred rivers; snänasya—of
bathing; puëyam—the pious result; tasya—of that; dine—day; dine—after day; gopé-candana—of gopé-
candana; müdräbhiù—by marking; müdritaù—marked; yaù—who; sadä—always; bhavet—is.
A person who daily wears gopé-candana tilaka attains the
pious result of daily bathing in all sacred rivers.

açvamedha-sahasräëi
räjasüya-çatäni ca
sarväëi tértha-dänäni
vratäni ca tathaiva ca
kåtäni tena nityaà vai
sa kåtärtho na saàçayaù
açvamedha-sahasräëi—a thousand asvamedha-yajnas;
räjasüya-çatäni—a hundred rajasuya-yajnas; ca—and;
sarväëi—all; tértha—holy places; dänäni—giving
charity; vratäni—following vows; ca—and;
tathä—so; eva—indeed; ca—and; kåtäni—done; tena—by him; nityam—daily; vai—indeed;
sa—he; kåtärthaù—attains the goal of life; na—no; saàçayaù—doubt.
A person who daily wears gopé-candana tilaka attains the
result of performing a thousand açvamedha-yajïas and a
hundred räjasüya-yajïas. He attains the reusult of giving
charity and following vows at all holy places. He attains the
goal of life. Of this there is no doubt.
Text 19
gaìgä-måd-dvi-guëaà puëyaà
citraküöa-rajaù småtam
tasmäd daça-guëaà puëyaà
rajaù païcavaté-bhavam
gaìgä—of the Gaìgä; måt—the mud; dvi-
guëam—twice; puëyam—piety; citraküöa-rajaù—the dust of
Citraküöa; småtam—considered; tasmät—than that; daça-guëam—ten times; puëyam—piety; rajaù—the
dust; païcavaté-bhavam—of Païcavaté.
Twice as sacred as the mud of the Gaìgä is the dust of
Citraküöa. Ten times more sacred than that is the dust of Païcavaté-tértha.

tasmäc chata-guëaà puëyaà
gopé-candanakaà rajaù
gopé-candanakaà viddhi
våndävana-rajaù-samam
tasmät—than that; çata-guëam—a hundred times;
puëyam—sacred; gopé-candanakam—gopé-candana;
rajaù—dust; gopé-candanakam—gopé-candana;
viddhi—please know; våndävana-rajaù-samam—equal to the dust
of Våndävana.
A hundred times more sacred is the dust of gopé-candana.
Please know that gopé-candana is equal to the dust of Våndävana.
Text 21
gopé-candana-liptäìgaà
yadi päpa-çatair yutam
taà netuà na yamaù çakto
yama-dütäù kutaù punaù
gopé-candana-liptäìgam—limbs marked with gopé-candana;
yadi—if; päpa-çataiù—with a hundred sins;
yutam—endowed; tam—him; netum—ot lead;
na—not; yamaù—Yamaräja; çaktaù—is able; yama-
dütäù—the messengers of Yamaräja; kutaù—how?;
punaù—again.
Even if in the past he has committed hundreds of sins, if a
person wears gopé-candana tilaka, then Yamaräja cannot take him
away. How, then, can Yamaräja's messengers touch him?

nityaà karoti yaù päpé
gopé-candana-dhäraëam
sa prayäti harer dhäma
golokaà prakåteù param
nityam—regularly; karoti—does; yaù—who;
päpé—a sinner; gopé-candana-dhäraëam—wearing gopé-
candana; sa—he; prayäti—goes; hareù—of Lord
Hari; dhäma—to the abod3; golokam—Goloka;
prakåteù—the material world; param—above.
A sinner who daily wears gopé-candana tilaka goes to Lord
Kåñëa supreme abode, Goloka, which is beyond the world of matter.

sindhu-deçasya räjäbhüd
dérghabähur iti çrutaù
anyäya-varté duñöätmä
veçyä-saìga-rataù sadä
sindhu-deçasya—of Sindhu-deça; räjä—a king;
abhüt—was; dérghabähuù—Dérghabähur; iti—thus;
çrutaù—heard; anyäya—evil; varté—doing;
duñöätmä—wicked; veçyä-saìga-rataù—attached to
prostitutes; sadä—always.
In Sindhu-deça there was a king named Dérghabähu. He was
cruel and sinful and he was addicted to visiting prostitutes.

tena vai bhärate varñe
brahma-hatyä-çataà kåtam
daça garbhavaté-hatyäù
kåtäs tena durätmanä
tena—by him; vai—indeed; bhärate varñe—in Bharat-
varña; brahma-hatyä-çatam—killing a hundred brähmaëas; kåtam—done; daça—ten; garbhavaté-hatyäù—killing
pregnant women; kåtäù—done; tena—by him;
durätmanä—wicked.
While he was on the earth this cruel sinner murdered a
hundred brähmaëas and ten pregnant women.

mågayäyäà tu bäëaughaiù
kapilä-go-vadhaù kåtaù
saindhavaà hayam äruhya
mågayärthé gato 'bhavat
mågayäyäm—in hunting; tu—indeed; bäëaughaiù—with
many arrows; kapilä-go-vadhaù—killing a brown cow;
kåtaù—done; saindhavam—a sindhu; hayam—horse;
äruhya—mounting; mågayärthé—wishing to hunt;
gataù—went; abhavat—did.
One day he mounted a sindhu horse and went hunting. With a
flood of arrows he accidentally killed with a brown cow in that
hunt.

ekadä räjya-lobhena
mantré kruddho mahä-khalam
jaghänäraëya-deçe taà
tékñna-dhäreëa cäsinä
ekadä—one day; räjya—for a kingdom; lobhena—with
greed; mantré—minister; kruddhaù—angry; mahä-
khalam—wicked; jaghäna—killed; äraëya-deçe—in the
forest; tam—him; tékñna-dhäreëa—with a sharp;
ca—and; asinä—sword.
One day, greedy to get his kingdom, with a sharp sword his
angry minister killed him in the forest.

bhü-tale patitaà måtyu-
gataà vékñya yamänugäù
baddhvä yama-puréà ninyur
harñayantaù parasparam
bhü-tale—to the ground; patitam—fallen; måtyu-
gatam—dead; vékñya—seeing; yamänugäù—the
yamadütas; baddhvä—binding; yama-purém—to the city of
yama; ninyuù—led; harñayantaù—joking;
parasparam—among themselves.
Seeing him fallen to the ground and dead, the Yamadütas
came, bound him, and, joking as they went, took him to the city
of Yamaräja.

sammukhe 'vasthitaà vékñya
päpinaà yama-räò balé
citraguptaà präha türëaà
kä yogyä yänatäsya vai
sammukhe—in the presence; avasthitam—situated;
vékñya—seeing; päpinam—sinner; yama-räò—yamaräja; balé—powerful; citraguptam—to Citragupta;
präha—said; türëam—quickly; kä—what?; yogyä—is
proper; yänatä—punishment; asya—of him;
vai—certainly.
Seeing this sinner brought before him, powerful Yamaräja
said to his scribe Citragupta, "What is the proper
punishment for him?"

catur-açéti-lakñeñu
narakeñu nipatyatäm
niùsandehaà mahä-räja
yävac candra-diväkarau
çré-citragupta uväca—Çré Citragupta said; catur-açéti-
lakñeñu—eight million four hundred thousand; narakeñu—into
hells; nipatyatäm—should fall; niùsandeham—without
doubt; mahä-räja—O great king; yävat—as longas; candra—the moon; diväkarau—and the sun.
Çré Citragupta said: O great king, he should be thrown into
eight million four hundred thousand hells for as long as the sun and the moon shine in the sky.

anena bhärate varñe
kñaëaà na su-kåtaà kåtam
daça-garbhavaté-ghätaù
kapilä-go-vadhaù kåtaù
anena—by him; bhärate varñe—on the earth;
kñaëam—for a moment; na—not; su-kåtam—pious deed; kåtam—done; daça—ten; garbhavaté—pregnant
women; ghätaù—killed; kapilä-go-vadhaù—the killing of
a brown cow; kåtaù—done.
On the earth he did not perform a single pious deed. He
killed ten pregnant women. He killed a brown cow.

tathä vana-mågänäà ca
kåtvä hatyäù sahasraçaù
tasmäd ayaà mahä-päpé
devatä-dvija-nindakaù
tathä—so; vana-mågänäm—of animals in the forest;
ca—and; kåtvä—doing; hatyäù—killing;
sahasraçaù—thousands; tasmät—from that; ayam—he; mahä-päpé—a great sinner; devatä—the demigods;
dvija—andf the brähmaëas; nindakaù—offending.
He killed thousands of deer in the forest. He offended the
demigods and the brähmaëas. He is a great sinner.

kumbhépäke nyapätayan
pralayägni-samo vahniù

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; tadä—then;
yama—of Yamaräja; äjïayä—by the order;
dütä—his messengers; nitvä—taking; tam—him;
päpa-rüpiëam—sinner; sahasra-yojanäyäme—eight thousand miles
across; tapta—boiling; taile—oil; mahä-
khale—very terrible; sphurat—manifested; aty-
ucchalat-phene—bubbling; kumbhépäke—in Kumbhipaka; nyapätayan—thrown; pralaya—of cosmic devastation;
agni—the fire; samaù—equal; vahniù—fire;
sadyaù—at once; çétalatäm—coldness; gataù—attained.
Çré Närada said: Then, by Yamaräja's order, the Yamadütas
took that sinner and threw him into a terrible, eight-thousand
mile wide cauldron of bubbling boiling oil in the hell of
Kumbhépäka. The moment that sinner came to it, the boiling oil,
which was as hot as the great fires at the time of cosmic
devastation, suddenly became cool.

vaideha tan-nipatanät
prahläda-kñepaëäd yathä
tadaiva citram äcakhyur
yama-dütä mahätmane
vaideha—O king of Videha; tan-nipatanät—by his
falling; prahläda-kñepaëät—the throwing of Prahläda;
yathä—as; tadä—then; eva—indeed; citram—a
wonder; äcakhyuù—told; yama-dütä—the Yamadütas; mahätmane—to Yamaräja.
O king of Videha, as Prahläda was unhurt in the same
situation, that sinner was not hurt by the boiling oil. Then the
Yamadütas described that great wonder to noble-hearted Yamaräja.

anena su-kåtaà bhümau
kñaëavan na kåtaà kvacit
citraguptena satataà
dharma-räjo vyacintayat
anena—by him; su-kåtam—a pious deed; bhümau—on
the earth; kñaëavan—for a moment; na—not;
kåtam—done; kvacit—ever; citraguptena—by
Citragupta; satatam—again and again; dharma-
räjaù—Yamaräja; vyacintayat—considered.
Yamaräja and Citragupta carefully reviewed the sinner's case
and concluded that while he was on the earth the sinner had not
for a moment performed even a single pious deed.

sabhäyäm ägataà vyäsaà
sampüjya vidhivan nåpa
natvä papraccha dharmätmä
dharma-räjo mahä-matiù
sabhäyäm—to the assembly; ägatam—come;
vyäsam—Vyäsa; sampüjya—worshiping;
vidhivan—properly; nåpa—O king; natvä—bowing; papraccha—asked; dharmätmä—saintly; dharma-
räjaù—Yamaräja; mahä-matiù—noble-hearted.
Then Vyäsadeva arrived in that assembly. Bowing down before
Him, and carefully worshiping Him, saintly and noble-hearted
Yamaräja asked Vyäsadeva the following question.

anena päpinä pürvaà
na kåtaà su-kåtaà kvacit
sphurad-agny-ucchalat-phene
kumbhépäke mahä-khale
asya kñepanato vahniù
sadyaù çétalatäà gataù

çré-yama uväca—Çré Yamaräja said; anena—by this;
päpinä—sinner; pürvam—before; na—not;
kåtam—done; su-kåtam—pious deed; kvacit—ever;
sphurad-agny-ucchalat-phene—bubbling with fire;
kumbhépäke—in the burning Kumbhépäka; mahä-
khale—terrible; asya—of him; kñepanataù—by the
throwing; vahniù—the fire; sadyaù—at once;
çétalatäm—coolness; gataù—attained; iti—thus;
sandehataù—by doubt; cetaù—mind; khidyate—is
tormented; me—of me; na—no; saàçayaù—doubt.
Çré Yamaräja said: When a certain sinner, who had never
performed even a single pious deed, was thrown into the terrible
boiling oil of Kumbhépäka, the oil suddenly became cool. Because
of this my mind is now tortured with doubts.

sükñmä gatir mahä-räja
viditä päpa-puëyayoù
tathä brahma-gatiù präjïaiù
sarva-çästra-vidäà varaiù
çré-vyäsa uväca—Çré Vyäsadeva said; sükñmä—suble; gatiù—movement; mahä-räja—O great king;
viditä—understood; päpa—of sin; puëyayoù—and
piety; tathä—so; brahma-gatiù—spiritual
activities; präjïaiù—by the wise; sarva-
çästra—all scriptures; vidäm—of they who know;
varaiù—by the best.
Çré Vyäsadeva said: O great king, the intelligent sages, who have studied all the scriptures, know that the ways of piety,
sin, and spiritual progress are very subtle and difficult to
understand.

daiva-yogäd asya puëyaà
präptaà vai svayam arthavat
yena puëyena çuddho 'sau
tac chånu tvaà mahä-mate
daiva-yogät—by fate; asya—of him;
puëyam—piety; präptam—attained; vai—indeed;
svayam—personally; arthavat—as money; yena—by
whom; puëyena—by piety; çuddhaù—pure;
asau—he; tat—that; çånu—please hear;
tvam—you; mahä-mate—O noble one.
Somehow or other, by destiny, this sinner did perform a
pious deed, and by that deed he became purified. O noble-hearted
one, please hear the story of this.

kasyäpi hastato yatra
patitä dvärakä-mådaù
tatraiväyaà måtaù päpé
çuddho 'bhüt tat-prabhävataù
kasyäpi—of someone; hastataù—from the hand;
yatra—where; patitä—fallen; dvärakä-mådaù—the mud of
Dvärakä; tatra—there; eva—indeed; ayam-he; måtaù—died; päpé—sinner; çuddhaù—purified;
abhüt—became; tat-prabhävataù—by its power.
That sinner died in a place where from someone's hand some
gopé-candana from Dvärakä had accidentally fallen. Dying in gopé-
candana, that sinner became purified.

gopé-candana-liptäìgo
naro näräyaëo bhavet
etasya darçanät sadyo
brahma-hatyä pramucyate
gopé-candana-liptäìgaù—his body marked with gopé-
vandrana; naraù—a person; näräyaëaù—like Lord
Näräyaëa; bhavet—becames; etasya—of him;
darçanät—by the sight; sadyaù—at once; brahma-
hatyä—the sin of killing a brähmaëa; pramucyate—is released.
A person who wears gopé-candana tilaka attains a spiritual
form like that of Lord Näräyaëa. Simply by seeing him one becomes
free of the sin of killing a brähmaëa.

airplane; käma-ge—moving by desire;

glories of gopé-candana; evam—thus; te—to you;
kathitam—told; räjan—O king; gopé-candanakam—gopé-
candana; yaçaù—the glories.
Çré Närada said: Hearing this, Yamaräja, who understands the
glories of gopé-candana, took the sinner, placed him a an
airplane that goes anywhere one wishes, and sent him to
Vaikuëöha, which is above the worlds of matter. O king, thus I
have described to you the glories of gopé-candana.

gopé-candana-mähätmyaà
yaù çåëoti narottamaù
sa yäti paramaà dhäma
çré-kåñëasya mahätmanaù
gopé-candana-mähätmyam—the glories of gopé-candana;
yaù—one who; çåëoti—hears; narottamaù—the best of
men; sa—he; yäti—attains; paramam—the
supreme; dhäma—abode; çré-kåñëasya—of Çré Kåñëa; mahätmanaù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
One who hears this account of gopé-candana's glories becomes
exalted. He goes to the supreme abode of Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
