The Story of the Gopés That In the Holi Festival Displayed Three

Transcendental Virtues

Text 1

idaà mayä te kathitaà

gopénäà caritaà çubham

anyäsäà caiva gopénäà

varëanaà çåëu maithila

idam—this; mayä—by me; te—to you;

kathitam—spoken; gopénäm—of the gopés;

caritam—activities; çubham—beautiful; anyäsäm—of

others; ca—and; eva—indeed; gopénäm—gopés; varëanam—description; çåëu—please hear; maithila—O

king of Mithilä.

O king of Mithilä, now that I have described the beautiful

activities of these gopés, please hear the story of some other

gopés.

vétihotro 'gnibhuk sämbaù

çrékaro gopatiù çrutaù

vrajeçaù pävanaù çänta

upanandäù vrajebhaväù

vétihotraù—Vétihotra; agnibhuk—Agnibhuk;

sämbaù—Sämba; çrékaraù—Çrékara; gopatiù—Gopati;

çrutaù—Sruta; vrajeçaù—Vrajesa; pävanaù—Pavana;

çänta—Santa; upanandäù—the Upanandas; vrajebhaväù—born

in Vraja.

Born in Vraja, the Upanandas were: Vétihotra, Agnibhuk,

Sämba, Çrékara, Gopati, Çruta, Vrajeça, Pävana, and Çänta.

Text 3

dhanavanto rüpavantaù

putravanto bahu-çrutäù

çélädi-guëa-sampannäù

sarve däna-paräyaëäù

dhanavantaù—wealthy; rüpavantaù—handsome; putravantaù—thew fathers of many children; bahu-çrutäù—learnbed; çélädi-guëa-sampannäù—endowed with noble character and many virtues; sarve—all; däna-paräyaëäù—charitable.

They were all wealthy, handsome, learned, noble, virtuous, charitable, and the fathers of many children.

Text 4

teñu gåheñu saïjätäù

kanyakä deva-väkyataù

käçcid divyä adivyäç ca

tathä tri-guëa-våttayaù

teñu—there; gåheñu—in the homes; saïjätäù—born; kanyakä—daughters; deva-väkyataù—by the word of the Lord; käçcit—some; divyä—from the heavenly planets; adivyäù—not from the heavenly p;lanets; ca—and; tathä—so; tri-guëa-våttayaù—endowed with three virtues.

Following the orders of the demigods, these girls, endowed

with three virtues, some from the celestial planets, and some not

from the celestial planets, took birth in the homes of the

Upanandas.

Text 5

bhümi-gopyaç ca saïjätäù

puëyair nänä-vidhaiù kåtaiù

rädhikä-sahacaryäs täù

sakhyo 'bhuvan videha-räö

bhümi-gopyaù— gopés on the earth; ca—and;

saïjätäù—born; puëyaiù—with pious deeds;

nänä-vidhaiù—many kinds; kåtaiù—done; rädhikä-

sahacaryaù—Rädhä's friends; täù—they;

sakhyaù—friends; abhuvan—became; videha-räö—O king of

Videha.

O king of Videha, having performed many pious deeds, these

gopés were born on the earth and became the friends of Çré Rädhä.

Text 6

ekadä mäninéà rädhäà

täù sarvä vraja-gopikäù

ücur vékñya harià präptaà

holikäyä mahotsave

ekadä—one day; mäniném—filled with jealous anger; rädhäm—Rädhä; täù—they; sarvä—all; vraja-

gopikäù—the vraja-gopés; ücuù—said; vékñya—seeing; harim—Kåñëa; präptam—attained; holikäyä—of

holi; mahotsave—the great festival.

Noticing that Kåñëa was ready to celebrate the great Holi festival, these gopés approached Rädhä, who was then filled with

jealous anger, and spoke to Her.

Text 7

çré-gopya ücuù

rambhoru candra-vadane madhu-mäninéçe

rädhe vacaù su-lalitaà lalane çåëu tvam

çré-holikotsava-vihäram alaà vidhätuà

äyäti te pura-vane vraja-bhüñaëo 'yam

çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; rambhoru—O girl whose

thighs are like banana trees; candra-vadane—O moon-faced

girl; madhu-manini—O girl sweet as honey; éçe—O

queen; rädhe—Rädhä; vacaù—words; su-

lalitam—graceful; lalane—O girl; çåëu—please hear; tvam—You; çré-holikotsava-vihäram—the pastime of the Holi

festuival; alam—greatly; vidhätum—to place;

äyäti—comes; te—of You; pura-vane—in the forest; vraja-bhüñaëaù—the ornament of Vraja; ayam—He.

The gopés said: O moon-face, banana-tree thigh, sweet as

honey Queen Rädhä, please hear these pleasing words. Çré Kåñëa,

the ornament of Vraja, has come to Your forest to celebrate the

Holi festival.

Text 8

çré-yauvanonmada-vighürëita-locano 'sau

nélälakäli-kalitäàsa-kapola-golaù

sat-péta-kaïcuka-ghanäntam açeñm äräd

äcälayan dhvani-matä sva-padäruëena

çré-yauvana-by youthfulness; unmada—intoxication; vighürëita—rolling; locanaù—eyes; asau—He;

nélälakäli—dark locks of hair; kalitäàsa—on His

shoulders; kapola-golaù—and cheeks; sat-péta-kaïcuka-ghanäntam—the edge of the yellow garment;

açeñam—all; ärät—near; acälayan—moving; dhvani-

matä—sound; sva-padä—with His foot; aruëena—red.

His eyes rolling in the intoxication of glorious youth, His

black locks resting on His cheeks and shoulders covered with a

yellow shawl, He walks here, the anklets tinkling on His reddish

feet.

bälärka-mauli-vimaläìgada-häram udyad-

vidyut-kñipan-makara-kuëòalam ädadhänaù

pétämbareëa jayati dyuti-maëòalo 'sau

bhü-maëòale sa-dhanuñeva ghano divi-sthaù

bälärka—the rising sun; mauli—crown; vimala—glistening; aìgada—armlets;

häram—necklaces; udyat—rising; vidyut—lightning; kñipat—eclipsing; makara—shark;

kuëòalam—earrings; ädadhänaù—wearing; pétämbareëa—with

yellow garments; jayati—is glorious; dyuti-

maëòalaù—in a circle of light; asau—He; bhü-maëòale—on

the circle of the earth; sa-dhanuñä—with its bow;

iva—like; ghanaù—a cloud; divi-sthaù—in the sky.

Wearing glittering armlets, yellow garments, a crown like

the rising sun, and shark earrings that eclipse lightning, He is

splendid and glorious as a monsoon cloud and a rainbow.

äbéra-kuìkuma-rasaiç ca vilipta-deho

haste gåhita-nava-secana-yantra ärät

prekñaàs taväçu sakhi väöam atéva rädhe

tvad-räsa-raìga-rasa-keli-rataù sthitaù saù

äbéra-kuìkuma-rasaiù—with red kunkuma; ca—and;

vilipta—anointed; dehaù—body; haste—hand;

gåhita—taken; nava—new; secana-yantra—sprinkling

device; ärät—near; prekñaàù—seeing; tava—of

You; äçu—at once; sakhé—friend; vatam—courtyard

garden; atéva—great; rädhe—O Rädhä; tvad-räsa-

raìga-rasa-keli—nectar rasa-dance pastimes; rataù—eager; sthitaù—situated; saù—He.

Eager to enjoy a räsa-dance with You, His body anointed with

red kunkuma, and a sprinkler in His hand, He fixes His gaze on as

You stay nearby in this courtyard-garden.

Text 11

nirgaccha phälguna-miñeëa vihäya mänaà

dätavyam adya ca yaçaù kila holikäyai

kartavyam äçu nija-mandira-raìga-väri-

päöéra-paìka-makaranda-cayaà ca türëam

nirgaccha—go; phälguna—the month of Phalguna (February-

March) miñeëa—on the pretext; vihäya—abandoning;

mänam—jealous anger; dätavyam—should be given;

adya—now; ca—and; yaçaù—fame; kila—indeed; holikäyai—to Holi; kartavyam—should be done; äçu—at

once; nija—own; mandira—palace; raìga—red; väri—water; päöéra—sandal; paìka—paste;

makaranda-cayam—flower-nectar; ca—and; türëam—at once.

Give up Your jealous anger, and celebrate the glorious Holi

festival. Go at once and get water mixed with red dye, sandal

paste, and flower-pollen.

Text 12

uttiñöha gaccha sahasä nija-maëòalébhir

yaträsti so 'pi kila tatra mahä-mate tvam

etädåço 'pi samayo na kadäpi labhyaù

prakñälitaà kara-talaà viditaà pravähe

uttiñöha—rise; gaccha—go; sahasä—at once;

nija-maëòalébhiù—with Your associates; yatra—where;

asti—is; saù—He; api—also; kila—indeed;

tatra—there; mahä-mate—O generous one; tvam—You; etädåçaù—like this; api—even; samayaù—occasion; na—not; kadäpi—ever; labhyaù—is attainable;

prakñälitam—washed; kara-talam—hand;

viditam—known; pravähe—in the flood.

Stand up! Go at once! O noble-hearted one, with Your friends

go to where He is! An opportunity like this will not come again.

Wash Your hand in the stream of the Holi festival.

çré-närada uväca

atha mänavaté rädhä

mänaà tyaktvä samutthitä

sakhé-saìghaiù parivåtä

prakartuà holikotsavam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; atha—then;

mänavaté—filled with jealous anger; rädhä—Rädhä;

mänam—jealous anger; tyaktvä—abandoning;

samutthitä—risen; sakhé-saìghaiù—with Her friends;

parivåtä—surrounded; prakartum—to do; holikotsavam—to

Holi festival.

Çré Närada said: Then angry Rädhä put aside Her jealous

anger, stood up, and, accompanied by Her friends, went to

celebrate the Holi festival.

Text 14

çrékhaëòäguru-kastüré-

haridra-kuìkuma-dravaiù

püritäbhir dåtébhiç ca

samyuktäs tä vrajäìganäù

çrékhaëòa—sandal; aguru—aguru; kastüré—musk; haridra—turmeric; kuìkuma—kunkuma;

dravaiù—liquid; püritäbhiù—filled; dåtébhiù—with

sprinklers; ca—and; samyuktäù—endowed;

tä—they; vrajäìganäù—the girls of Vraja.

The girls of Vraja carried sprinklers filled with water

mixed with sandal, aguru, musk, yellow turmeric, and red kuìkuma.

rakta-hastäù péta-vasträù

küjan-nüpura-mekhaläù

gäyantyo holikä-gétir

galébhir häsya-sandhibhiù

rakta-hastäù—red hands; péta-vasträù—yellow

garmentç; küjan-nüpura-mekhaläù—tinkling anklets and

belts; gäyantyaù—singing; holikä-gétiù—with Holi

songs; galébhiù—with arrogant words; häsya—with

laughter; sandhibhiù—mixed.

With red hands and yellow garments, and with rowdy songs and

laughter, they sang about the glories of Holi.

Text 16

äbéräruëa-cürëänäà

muñöibhis tä itas tataù

kurvatyaç cäruëaà bhümià

dig-antaà cämbaraà tathä

äbéräruëa-cürëänäm—with red powder; muñöibhiù—with

fists; tä—they; itaù tataù—here and there;

kurvatyaç—doing; ca—and; aruëam—red;

bhümim—earth; dig-antam—the directions; ca—and;

ambaram—the sky; tathä—so.

Throwing fistfulls of red powder, they reddened the sky, the

earth, and all the directions.

Text 17

koöiçaù koöiças tatra

sphuranty äbéra-muñöayaù

su-gandhäruëa-cürëänäà

koöiçaù koöiças tathä

koöiçaù koöiçaù—millions and millions; tatra—there; sphuranty—manifested; äbéra-muñöayaù—red fists;

su-gandha—fragrant; aruëa-cürëänäm—red powder;

koöiçaù koöiçaù—millions and millions; tathä—so.

There were millions and millions of reddish fists. Millions

and millions of times they threw fragrant red powder.

Text 18

sarvato jagåhuù kåñëaà

karäbhyäà vraja-gopikäù

yathä meghaà ca däminyaù

sandhyäyäà çrävaëasya ca

sarvataù—from everywhere; jagåhuù—grabbed;

kåñëam—Kåñëa; karäbhyäm—with both hands; vraja-gopikäù—the vraja-gopés; yathä—as; meghaà —a

cloud; ca—and; däminyaù—lightning;

sandhyäyäm—meeting; çrävaëasya—of the month of Sravana; ca—and.

As lightning flashes surround a cloud in the month of

Çrävaëa (July-August), so the vraja-gopés surrounded Kåñëa and

held Him tightly with both hands.

Text 19

tan-mukhaà ca vilimpantyo

'thäbéräruëa-muñöibhiù

kuìkumäkta-dåtébhis taà

ardré-cakrur vidhänataù

tan-mukham—His face; ca—and;

vilimpantyaù—anointing; atha—then; äbéra-aruëa-

muñöibhiù—with fists filled with red powder; kuìkumäkta-

dåtébhiù—with sprinklers filled with kunbkuma water;

tam—Him; ardré-cakruù—sprinkled;

vidhänataù—accordingly.

With fistfulls of red powder they anointed His face. With

sprinklers of kuìuma-water they drenched Him.

bhagavän api tatraiva

yävatér vraja-yoñitaù

dhåtvä rüpäëi tävanti

vijahära nåpeçvara

bhagavän—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

api—also; tatra—there; eva—indeed; yävatéù—as

many; vraja-yoñitaù—Vraja girls;

dhåtvä—manifesting; rüpäëi—forms; tävanti—that

many; vijahära—enjoyed pastimes; nåpeçvara—O king of

kings.

O king of kings, then the Supreme Personality of Godhead

expanded into as many forms as there were vraja-gopés.

Text 21

rädhayä suçubhe tatra

holikäyä mahotsave

varñäsandhyäkñane kåñëaù

saudaminyä ghano yathä

rädhayä—with Rädhä; suçubhe—shone;

tatra—there; holikäyä—of Holi; mahotsave—in the great

festival; varñäsandhyäkñane—during a rainfall;

kåñëaù—Kåñëa; saudaminyä—with lightning; ghanaù—a

cloud; yathä—as.

As a cloud touched by lightning in the rain, so Kåñëa was

splendidly manifest with Rädhä in the Holi festival.

Text 22

kåñëo 'pi tad-dhasta-kåtäkta-netro

dattvä svakéyaà navam uttaréyaà

täbhyo yayau nanda-gåhaà pareço

deveñu varñatsu ca puñpa-varñam

kåñëaù—Lord Kåñëa; api—even; tat—by Her;

dhasta—hand; kåtäkta—anointed; netraù—eyes;

dattvä—giving; svakéyam—own; navam—new;

uttaréyam—upper garment; täbhyaù—from them;

yayau—went; nanda-gåham—to Nanda's home; pareçaù—the

Supreme Personality of Godhead; deveñu—as the demigods; varñatsu—showered; ca—and; puñpa-varñam—a rain of

flowers.

Taking a new upper garment, and His eyes now anointed by

Rädhä's hand, Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead,

left the gopés and went to King Nanda's palace as the demigods

showered flowers.
