Description of Vasudeva's Wedding

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

tatraikadä çré-mathurä-pure vare

purohitaù sarva-yadüttamaiù kåtaù

surecchayä garga iti pramäëikaù

samäyayau sundara-räja-mandiram

çré-näradaù uväca —Çré Närada said; tatra —there;

ekadä —once; çré-mathurä-pure —in Mathurä City; vare —excellent;

purohitaù —the priest; sarva-yaduttamaiù —by all the best of the

Yadus; kåtaù —done; sura —of the demigods; icchayä —by the desire;

gargaù —Garga Muni; iti —thus; pramäëikaù —great scholar;

samäyayau —came; sundara —handsome; räja —of the king; mandiram —to

the palace.

Çré Närada said: One day the great scholar Garga Muni, whom

all the Yadus had made their chief priest, by his own wish went

in Mathurä City to the king's handsome palace, . . .

hérä-khacid-dhema-lasat-kapäöakaà

dvipendra-karëähata-bhrìga-näditam

ibha-sravan-nirjhara-gaëòa-dhärayä

samardritaà mandapa-khaëòa-maëòitam

hira —diamonds; khacit —studded; hema —gold; lasat —glistening;

kapäöakam —door; dvipa —of elephants; indra —king; karëa —by the

ear; ähata —struck; bhrìga —bee; näditam —sounded; ibha —elephant;

sravat —flowing; nirjhara —streams; gaëòa —cheek; dhärayä —with a

stream; samardritam —wet; mandapa —pavilion; khaëòa —part;

maëòitam —decorated.

. . . which had great glistening golden doors studded with

diamonds, which was filled with the sounds of bees and the

flapping of elephants' ears, which was wet with streams of ichor

flowing from the elephants, and which was decorated with many

pavilions, . . .

mahodbhaöair véra-janaiù sa-kaïcukair

dhanur-dharaiç carma-kåpäëa-päëibhiù

ratha-dvipäçva-dhvajiné-balädibhiù

su-rakñitaà maëòala-maëòalébhiù

mahodbhaöaiù —great soldiers; véra-janaiù —heroic; sa-ka

24cukaiù —wearing armor; dhanur-dharaiù —holding bows;

carma —shields; kåpäëa —and swords; päëibhiù —in hand;

ratha —chariots; dvipa —elephants; açva —horses; dhvajiné —of an

army; bala —the might; ädibhiù —beginning with; su —well;

rakñitam —protected; maëòala-maëòalébhiù —with groups.

. . . and which was well protected by great heroic soldiers

wearing armor, carrying bows, holding swords and shields in their

hands, and by the great power of an army riding on chariots,

elephants, and horses.

dadarça gargo nåpadevam ähukaà

çvaphalkinä devaka-kaàsa-sevitam

çré-çakra-siàhäsana unnate pare

sthitaà våtaà cchätra-vitäna-cämaraiù

dadarça —saw; gargaù —Garga; nåpadevam —the king of kings;

ähukam —Ugrasena; çvaphalkinä —by Akrüra; devaka —Deavaka;

kaàsa —Kaàsa; sevitam —served; çré-çakra —of Indra; siàhäsane —on

the throne; unnate —raised; pare —great; sthitam —situated;

våtam —surrounded; chätra —parasol; vitäna —awning; cämaraiù —and

cämaras.

There Garga Muni saw emperor Ugrasena who was accompanied

Akrüra, served by Devaka and Kaàsa, and surrounded by parasols,

awnings, and cämaras as he sat on Indra's great throne

Text 5

dåöövä munià taà sahasäsanäçayäd

utthäya räjä praëanäma yädavaiù

saàsthäpya sampüjya subhadra-péöhake

stutvä parikramya nataù sthito 'bhavat

dåöövä —seeing; munim —sage; tam —the; sahasä —as tonce;

äsanäçayät —from the throne; utthäya —rising; räjä —the king;

praëanäma —bowed; yädavaiù —with the Yadus; saàsthäpya —placing;

sampüjya —worshiping; subhadra-péöhake —on the throne;

stutvä —offering prayers; parikramya —circumambulating;

nataù —bowing; sthitaù —stood; abhavat —was.

Seeing the sage, the emperor at once rose from his throne,

offered respectful obeisances with the Yädavas, placed the sage

on the throne, worshiped him, glorified him, circumambulated him,

and bowed down before him.

Text 6

dattväçiñaà garga-munir nåpäya vai

papraccha sarvaà kuçalaà nåpädiñu

çré-devakaà präha mahä-manä åñir

mahaujasaà néti-vidaà yadüttamam

dattvä —giving; äçiñam —benediction; garga-muniù —Garga

Muni; nåpäya —to the king; vai —certainly; papraccha —asked;

sarvam —all; kuçalam —welfare; nåpa-ädiñu —beginning with the

king; çré-devakam —Çré Devaka; präha —said; mahä-manä —the

great soul; åñiù —the sage; mahaujasam —very powerful; néti-

vidam —wise; yadüttamam —the best of the Yadus.

Garga Muni blessed the king and asked about the welfare of

the king and his associates. Then the saintly sage spoke to

powerful and wise Çré Devaka, the best of the Yädavas.

çré-garga uväca

çaurià vinä bhuvi nåpeñu varas tu nästi

cintyo mayä bahu-dinaiù kila yatra tatra

tasmän nå-deva vasudeva-varäya dehi

çré-devakéà tava sutäà vidhinodvahasva

çré-gargaù uväca —Çré Garga Muni said; çaurim —Vasudeva;

vinä —without; bhuvi —on the earth; nåpeñu —among the kings;

varaù —best; tu —indeed; na —not; asti —is; cintyaù —considered;

mayä —by me; bahu-dinaiù —with many days; kila —indeed;

yatra —where; tatra —there; tasmät —from that; nå-devaù —the king;

vasudeva-varäya —great Vasudeva; dehi —please give; çré-

devakém —Çré Devaké; tava —your; sutäm —daughter; vidhinä —

following tradition; udvahasva —marry.

Çré Garga Muni said: After thinking for many days I have

decided that in this world no king is better than

Vasudeva. Therefore, O king, please give your daughter Devaké in

marriage to Vasudeva.

çré-närada uväca

kåtvä tadaiva puri niçcaya-nägavallià

çré-devakaù sakala-dharma-bhåtäà variñöhaù

gargecchayä tu vasudeva-varäya putréà

kåtvätha maìgalam alaà pradadau vivähe

çré-näradaù uväca —Çré Närada said; kåtvä —having done;

tadä —then; eva —indeed; puri —in the city; niçcaya —decision;

nägavallim —betelnuts;

çré-devakaù —Çré Devaka; sakala —all; dharma —of religious

principles; bhåtäm —of they who possess; variñöhaù —the best;

garga —of Garga Muni; icchayä —by the desire; tu —indeed;

vasudeva-varäya —to Vasudeva; putrém —daughter; kåtvä —doing;

atha —then; maìgalam —auspiciousness; alam —great; pradadau —gave;

vivähe —in marriage.

Çré Närada said: After offering (the sage) betelnuts to show

his assent, Çré Devaka, who was the best of all pious men,

performed the auspicious ceremonies and gave his daughter in

marriage to Vasudeva according to Garga Muni's desire.

Text 9

kåtodvahaù çaurir atéva-sundaraà

rathaà prayäne samalaìkåtaà hayaiù

särdhaà tayä devaka-räja-kanyayä

samäruhat kaïcana-ratna-çobhayä

kåta —performed; udvahaù —marriage; çauriù —Vasudeva; atéva-

sundaram —very beautiful; ratham —chariot; prayäne —in the journey;

samalaìkåtam —decorated; hayaiù —horses; särdham —with; tayä —with

her; devaka-räja-kanyayä —King Devaka's daughter;

samäruhat —ascended; kaïcana —with gold; ratna —and jewels;

çobhayä —beautiful.

When the marriage ceremony was over Vasudeva, accompanied by

King Devaka's daughter, who was beautiful with gold and jewels,

climbed a very graceful decorated chariot drawn by many horses.

svasuù priyaà kartum atéva kaàso

jagräha raçméàs calatäà hayänäm

uväha vähäàs caturäìginébhir

våtaù kåpä-sneha-paro 'tha çaurau

svasuù —to his sister; priyam —a favor; kartum —to do;

atéva —very; kaàsaù —Kaàsa; jagräha —took; rasmin —the reins;

calatäm —moving; hayänäm —of the horses; uväha —carried;

vähän —the chariots; caturäìginébhiù —with an army;

våtaù —surrounded; kåpä-sneha-paraù —filled with kindness;

atha —then; çaurau —for Vasudeva.

To please his sister, Kaàsa took the reins of the moving

horses. Kind and affectionate to Vasudeva, and surrounded by an

army, he drove the chariot.

Text 11

däsé-sahasraà tv ayutaà gajanänäà

sat-päribarhaà niyutaà hayänäm

lakñaà rathänäà ca gaväà dvi-lakñaà

pradäd duhitre nåpa-devako vai

däsé —of maidservants; sahasram —a thousand; tu —indeed;

ayutam —ten thousand; gajanänäm —of elephants; sat-päribarham —a

wedding pressent; niyutam —a million; hayänäm —of horses;

lakñam —a hundred thousand; rathänäm —of chariots; ca —and;

gaväm —of cows; dvi-lakñam —two hundred thousand pradät —gave;

duhitre —to his daughter; nåpa-devaù —King Devaka; vai —indeed.

King Devaka gave to his daughter a wedding present of a

thousand maidservants, ten thousand elephants, a million horses,

a hundred thousand chariots, and two hundred thousand cows.

Text 12

bheri-mådaìgoddhara-gomukhänäà

dhundhurya-vénänaka-veëukänäà

mahat-svano 'bhüc calatäà yadünäà

prayäna-käle pathi maìgalaà ca

bheri —bheris; mådaìga —mådaìgas; uddhara —uddharas;

gomukhänäm —and gomukhas; dhundhurya —dhundhuryas;

vénä —vénäa; anaka —anakas; veëukänäm —and venus;

mahat —great; svanaù —sound; abhüt —was; calatäm —moving;

yadünäm —of the Yädavas; prayäna —of departure; käle —at the

time; pathi —on the path; maìgalam —auspicious; ca —and.

At the time of the Yädavas' departure, on the path was a

great auspicious sound of many bheris, mådaìgas, uddharas,

gomukhas, dhundhuryas, véëäs, anakas, and veëus.

Text 13

äkäça-väg äha tadaiva kaàsaà

tväm añöamo hi prasavo 'ïjasäsyäù

hantä na jänäsi ca yäà ratha-sthäà

räçmià gåhétvä vahase 'budhas tvam

äkäça —from the sky; väk —a voice; äha —said; tadä —then;

eva —indeed; kaàsam —to Kaàsa; tväm —you; añöamaù —the eighth;

hi —indeed; prasavaù —son; aïjasä —certainly; asyäù —of her;

hantä —killer; na —not; jänäsi —you know; ca —also; yäm —whom;

ratha-sthäm —staying on the chariot; räçmén —the reins;

gåhétvä —taking; vahase —you carry; abudhaù —a fool; tvam —you.

Then a voice from the sky said to Kaàsa: You are a fool. You

do not know that the eighth son of the girl riding in the chariot

you drive, holding the reins, will kill you.

Text 14

kusaìga-niñöho 'ti-khalo hi kaàso

hantuà svasäraà dhiñaëaà cakära

kace gåhitvä sita-khaòga-päëir

gata-trapo nirdaya ugra-karmä

ku-saìga-niñöhaù —whose friends were demons; ati-khalaù —very

wicked; hi —indeed; kaàsaù —Kaàsa; hantum —to kill; svasäram —his

sister; dhiñaëam —the ground; cakära —did; kace —by the hair;

gåhitvä —grabbing; sita —sharp; khaòga —sword; päëiù —in his hand;

gata-trapaù —shameless; nirdayaù —merciless; ugra —horrible;

karmä —deeds.

Wicked, shameless, merciless Kaàsa, whose friends were demons and whose deeds were horrible, threw his sister to the

ground, grabbed her by the hair, and grasped a sharp sword in his

hand to kill her.

Text 15

vaditra-kärä rahitä babhüvur

agre sthitäù syus cakitä hi paçcät

sarveñu vä çveta-mukheñu satsu

çauris tam ähäçu satäà variñöhaù

vaditra —käräù —musicians; rahitäù —without;

babhüvuù —became; agre-sthitäù —in the presence; syuù —were;

cakitäù —afraid; hi —indeed; paçcät —behind; sarveñu —all; vä —or;

çveta —white; mukheñu —faces; satsu —being so; çauriù —Vasudeva;

tam —to him; äha —said; äçu —at once; satäm —of the devotees;

variñöhaù —the best.

The musicians dropped their instruments. They who were in

front went to the rear. When all faces turned white, Vasudeva,

the best of devotees, spoke to Kaàsa.

çré-vasudeva uväca

bhojendra bhoja-kula-kérti-karas tvam eva

bhaumädi-mägadha-bakäsura-vatsa-bäëaiù

çläghyä guëäs tava yudhi pratiyoddhu-kämaiù

sa tvaà kathaà tu bhaginém asinätra hanyät

çré-vasudevaù uväca —Çré Vasudeva said; bhoja-indra —O king

of the Bhojas; bhoja-kula —of the Bhoja family; kérti-karaù —the

glory; tvam —you; eva —indeed; bhauma —narakäsura; ädi —beginning

with; mägadha —the king of Magadha; bakäsura —Bakäsura;

vatsa —Vatsa; bäëaiù —by bäëa; çläghyäù —glorified;

guëäù —virtues; tava —your; yudhi —in battle; pratiyoddhu-

kämaiù —desiring to fight; saù —he; tvam —you; katham —why?;

tu —certainly; bhaginém —sister; asinä —with a sword; atra —here;

hanyät —will kill.

Çré Vasudeva said: O king of the Bhojas, you are the glory

of the Bhoja dynasty. Narakäsura, Jaräsandha, Bakäsura,

Vatsäsura, and Bäëäsura, who all yearned to fight with you,

praise your virtues in battle. Why are you now on the verge of

killing with a sword your own sister?

Text 17

jïätvä striyaà kila bakéà pratiyoddhu-kämäà

yuddhaà kåtaà na bhavatä nåpa-néti-våttyä

sä tu tvayäpi bhaginéva kåtä praçäntyai

säkñäd iyaà tu bhaginé kim u te vicärät

jïätvä —understanding; striyam —a woman; kila —indeed; bakém —Pütanä; pratiyoddhu-kämäm —desiring to fight;

yuddham —fight; kåtam —done; na —not; bhavatä —by you; nåpa-néti-

våttyä —by the proper conduct of a king; sä —she; tu —certainly;

tvayä —by you; api —also; bhaginé —a sister; iva —like; kåtä —made;

praçäntyai —to pacify; säkñät —directly; iyam —she; tu —certainly;

bhaginé —sister; kim u —why?; te —of you; vicärät —by the thought.

Following the royal code of chivalry you would not fight

with Pütanä, a woman who yearned to fight with you, and to pacify

her you treated her as if she were your sister. This girl is your

real sister. Why do you wish to act in this way?

Text 18

udväha-parvaëi gatä ca tavänujä ca

bälä suteva kåpaëä çubhadä sadaiñä

yogyo 'si nätra mathurädhipa hantum etäà

tvaà déna-duùkha-haraëe kåta-citta-våttiù

udväha —of the wedding; parvaëi —the festival; gatä —gone;

ca —also; tava —your; anujä —younger sister; ca —also; bälä —a

girl; sutä —daughter; iva —like; kåpaëä —object of mercy;

çubhadä —auspicious; sadä —always; eñä —she; yogyaù —proper;

asi —are; na —not; atra —here; mathurädhipa —O king of Mathurä;

hantum —to kill; etäm —her; tvam —you; déna —of the poor;

duùkha —of the sufferings; haraëe —in the removal; kåta —done;

citta —of the heart; våttiù —the action.

On this, her festive wedding-day, you should be kind to your

younger sister and treat her as a daughter. O king of Mathurä,

you should not kill her. You should fix your heart on remving the

sufferings of the distressed.

nämanyathetthaà pratibodhito 'pi

ku-saìga-niñöho 'ti-khalo hi kaàsaù

tadä hareù käla-gatià vicärya

çauriù prasannaù punar äha kaàsam

çré-näradaù uväca —Çré Närada said; na —not;

ämanyatha —think; ittham —thus; pratibodhitaù —enlightened;

api —even; ku-säìga-niñöhaù —whose friends were demons; ati-

khalaù —very wicked; hi —certainly; kaàsaù —Kaàsa; tadä —then;

hareù —of Lord Kåñëa; käla —of time; gatim —the way;

vicärya —considering; çauriù —Vasudeva; prasannaù —cheerful;

punaù —again; äha —said; kaàsam —to Kaàsa.

Çré Närada said: Although given this good instruction,

wicked Kaàsa, whose friends were demons, did not take it

seriously. Then, reflecting on the ways of Lord Hari's time,

Vasudeva, now cheerful, again spoke to Kaàsa.

çré-vasudeva uväca

näsyäs tu te deva bhayaà kadäcid

yad deva-väëyä kathitaà ca tac chåëu

puträn dadäméti yato bhayaà syän

mä te vyathäsyäù prasava-prajätät

çré-vasudevaù uväca —Çré Vasudeva said; na —not; asyäù —of

her; tu —certainly; te —of you; deva —O lord; bhayam —fear;

kadäcit —ever; yat —what; deva —divine; väëyä —by the voice;

kathitam —spoken; ca —also; tat —that; çåëu —listen; puträn —sons;

dadämi — i will give; iti —thus; yataù —because of whom; bhayam —fear;

syät —may be; mä —don't; te —of you; vyathä —agitation; asyäù —of

her; prasava-prajätät —from the birth of sons.

Çré Vasudeva said: O lord, you never need to fear this girl.

Hear what the divine voice said. I will give you the sons that

frighten you. Don't be afraid of the sons that may be born from

her.

çré-närada uväca

çrutvä ca niçcitya vaco 'tha çaureù

kaàsaù praçaàsyäçu gåhaà gato 'bhüt

çauris tadä devaka-räja-putryä

bhayävåtaù san gåham äjagäma

çré-näradaù uväca —Çré Närada said; çrutvä —hearing; ca —also;

niçcitya —considering; vacaù —words; atha —then; çaureù —of Vasudeva;

kaàsaù —Kaàsa; praçaàsya —praising; äçu —at once; gåham —home;

gataù —went; abhüt —became; çauriù —Vasudeva; tadä —then; devaka-räja-

putryä —with the daughter of King Devaka; bhaya-ävåtaù —filled

with fear; san —being; gåham —home; äjagäma —came.

Çré Närada said: Hearing and agreeing with Vasudeva's

words, Kaàsa praised him and then went home. Then, frightened

Vasudeva, accompanied by King Devaka's daughter, went to his home.
