Maithily-upäkhyäna

The Story of the Mithilä Women

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

maithilénäà goipikänäà

äkhyänaà çåëu maithila

daçäçvamedha-térthasya

phaladaà bhakti-vardhanam

çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; maithilénäm—of the

women of Mithilä; goipikänäm—of the gopés;

äkhyänam—the stopry; çåëu—hear; maithila—O king of

Mithilä; daçäçvamedha-térthasya—of the holy place

dasasvamedha; phaladam—giving the result; bhakti-

vardhanam—increasing devotion.

Sré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, please hear the story of

the Mithilä women that become gopés, a story that brings the

result of visiting sacred Daçäçvamedha-tértha, a story the

increases one's love for Lord Kåñëa.

Text 2

çré-rämasya varäj jätä

nava-nanda-gåheñu yäù

kämanéyaà nanda-sünuà

dåñövä tä moham ästhitäù

çré-rämasya—of Lord Rämacandra; varät—from the

blessing; jätä—born; nava-nanda-gåheñu—in the homes

of the nine Nandas; yäù—who; kämanéyam—handsome; nanda-sünum—the son of Nanda; dåñövä—seeing;

tä—they; moham—enchantment; ästhitäù—attained.

Because of Lord Rämacandra's benediction they took birth in

the homes of the nine Nandas. When they saw handsome Kåñëa, they

became bewildered with love for Him.

Text 3

märgaçérñe çubhe mäsi

cakruù kätyäyané-vratam

upacäraiù ñoòaçabhiù

kåtvä devéà mahé-mayém

märgaçérñe—margasirsa; çubhe—auspicous; mäsi—in

the month; cakruù—did; kätyäyané-vratam—a vow to

worship goddess Durga; upacäraiù—with offerings;

ñoòaçabhiù—sixteen; kåtvä—doing; devém—to the

goddess; mahé-mayém—a deity made of clay.

During the auspicious month of Märgaçérña (November-

December) they observed a vow to worship goddess Kätyäyané. They

made a clay deity of the goddess and worshiped her with sixteen

offerings.

Text 4

aruëodaya-veläyäà

snätäù çré-yamunä-jale

nityaà sametä äjagmur

gäyantyo bhagavad-guëän

aruëodaya-veläyäm—at sunrise; snätäù—bathing;

çré-yamunä-jale—in the Yamunä's water; nityam—regularly; sametä—met; äjagmuù—went; gäyantyaù—singing;

bhagavat—of Lord Kåñëa; guëän—the virtues.

Singing Lord Kåñëa's glories as they went, every morning

they would bathe in the Yamunä's waters.

Text 5

ekadä täù sva-vasträëi

tére nyasya vrajäìganäù

vijahrur yamunä-toye

karäbhyäà siïcatér mithaù

ekadä—once; täù—they; sva-vasträëi—their

garments; tére—on the riverbank; nyasya—placing; vrajäìganäù—the girls of Vraja; vijahruù—played;

yamunä-toye—in the Yamunä's waters; karäbhyäm—with their

hands; siïcatéù—splashing; mithaù—each other.

Once, placing their garments on the riverbank, the girls of

Vraja, played in the Yamunä's waters, splashing each other with

both hands.

Text 6

täsäà väsäàsi sannéya

bhagavän prätar ägataù

tvaraà kadambam äruhya

cauravan maunam añöhitaù

täsäm—of them; väsäàsi—the garments;

sannéya—taking; bhagavän—the Lord; prätaù—in the

morning; ägataù—come; tvaram—quickly;

kadambam—a kadamba tree; äruhya—climbing;

cauravat—like a thief; maunam añöhitaù—silent.

Coming there that morning, Lord Kåñëa silently stole their

garments and climbed a kadamba tree.

Text 7

tä na vékñya sva-väsäàsi

vismitä gopa-kanyakäù

népa-sthitaà vilokyätha

sa-lajjä jahasur nåpa

täù—they; na—not; vékñya—seeing; sva-

väsäàsi—their garments; vismitä—surprised; gopa-

kanyakäù—teh gopés; népa—in a kadamba tree;

sthitam—staying; vilokya—seeing; atha—then; sa-

lajjä—with shyness; jahasuù—smiled; nåpa—O king.

Not seeing their clothes, the gopés were surprised. O king,

when they saw Kåñëa in the tree they shyly smiled.

Text 8

pratécchantu sva-väsäàsi

sarvä ägatya cätra vai

anyathä na hi däsyämi

våkñät kåñëa uväca ha

pratécchantu—may desire; sva-väsäàsi—own garments; sarvä—all; ägatya—approaching; ca—and;

atra—here; vai—indeed; anyathä—otherwise;

na—not; hi—indeed; däsyämi—I will give;

våkñät—from the tree; kåñëa—Kåñëa; uväca—said;

ha—indeed.

From the tree Kåñëa said: All who wish their garments, come

here and take them. If you do not come, I will not give them.

Text 9

räjantyas täù çéta-jale

hasantyaù prähur änatäù

räjantyaù—splendidly beautiful; täù—they; çéta—in

the cold; jale—water; hasantyaù—giggling;

prähuù—said; änatäù—with bowed heads.

Bowing their heads as they stood in the cold water, the

smiling girls spoke.

çré-gopya ücuù

he nanda-nandana manohara gopa-ratna

gopäla-vaàça-nava-haàsa mahärti-härin

çré-çyämasundara tavoditam adya väkyaà

kürmaù kathaà vivasanäù kila te 'pi däsyaù

çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; he—O; nanda-

nandana—son of Nanda; manohara—handsome; gopa-

ratna—jewel of the gopas; gopäla—of the gopas;

vaàça—in the family; nava—young; haàsa—swan;

mahärti-härin—remover of sufferings; çré-çyämasundara—O dark

and handsome one; tava—by You; uditam—spoken;

adya—now; väkyam—words; kürmaù—we do;

katham—how?; vivasanäù—without garments;

kila—indeed; te—of you; api—certainly;

däsyaù—the maidservants.

The gopés said: O handsome son of Nanda, O jewel of the

gopas, O young swan in the gopa dynasty, O destroyer of

sufferings, O handsome dark one, how can we follow Your order? We

are Your maidservants, but we have no clothes.

gopäìganä-vasana-muë navanéta-häré

jäto vraje 'ti-rasikaù kila nirbhayo 'si

väsäàsi dehi na hi cen mathurädhipäya

vakñyämahe 'nayam atéva kåtaà tvayätra

gopäìganä-vasana-muk—a theif of the gopés garments;

navanéta-häré—a theif of butter; jätaù—born; vraje—in

Vraja; ati-rasikaù—the enjoyer of nectar;

kila—indeed; nirbhayaù—fearless; asi—You are;

väsäàsi—garments; dehi—please give; na—not;

hi—indeed; cet—if; mathurädhipäya—to the King of

Mathurä; vakñyämahe—we will tell; anayam—misdeed; atéva—great; kåtam—done; tvayä—by You;

atra—here.

You are a thief of butter and thief of gopés' garments. You

are a fearless rake in the village of Vraja. Give us our

garments. If You don't we will tell King Kaàsa, the ruler of

Mathurä, the evil You have done here.

çré-bhagavän uväca

däsyo mamaiva yadi sundara-manda-häsä

icchantu vaitya kila cätra kadamba-müle

no cet samasta-vasanäni nayämi gehäàs

tasmät kariñyatha mamaiva vaco 'vilambät

çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead

said; däsyaù—maidservants; mama—My;

eva—indeed; yadi—if; sundara-manda-häsä—O sweetly-

smiling girls; icchantu—desire; vä—or;

etya—approaching; kila—indeed; ca—and;

atra—here; kadamba-müle—at the root of this kadamba

tree; na—not; u—indeed; cet—if; samasta-

vasanäni—allthe garments; nayämi—I will take;

gehäàù—to your homes; tasmät—therefore; kariñyatha—you

should do; mama—My; eva—indeed;

vacaù—words; avilambät—without delay.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O sweetly-smiling

girls, if you actually are My maidservants, and if you actually

want your garments, then come to the roots of this kadamba tree.

If you do not come, I will bring all these garments to your

homes. Because I will do that you should follow My orders without

delay.

çré-närada uväca

tadä tä nirgatäù sarvä

jaläd gopyo 'ti-vepitäù

änatä yonim acchädya

päëibhyäà çéta-karñitäù

çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; tadä—then;

tä—they; nirgatäù—went; sarvä—all; jalät—from

the water; gopyaù—the gopés; ati-

vepitäù—trembling; änatä—with bowed heads; yonim—the

pubic area; acchädya—covering; päëibhyäm—with both

hands; çéta-karñitäù—tormented by the cold.

Sré Närada said: Shivering with the cold, bowing their

heads, and covering their pubic areas with both hands, all the

gopés emerged from the water.

Text 14

kåñëa-dattäni väsäàsi

dadhuù sarvä vrajäìganäù

mohitäç ca sthitäs tatra

kåñëe lajjäyitekñaëäù

kåñëa-dattäni—given by Kåñëa; väsäàsi—the garments; dadhuù—placed; sarväù—all; vrajäìganäù—the girls of

Vraja; mohitäù—bewildered; ca—and;

sthitäù—stood; tatra—there; kåñëe—for Kåñëa;

lajjayita—shy; ékñaëäù—glances.

Taking their garments from Kåñëa, all the girls of Vraja

dressed themselves. Bewildered with love, they shyly gazed at

Lord Kåñëa.

Text 15

jïätvä täsäm abhipräyaà

parama-prema-lakñaëam

äha manda-smitaù kåñëaù

samantäd vékñya tä vacaù

jïätvä—understanding; täsäm—of them;

abhipräyam—the intention; parama-prema-lakñaëam—the highest

love; äha—said; manda—gently;

smitaù—smiling; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; samantät—at all of

them; vékñya—glancing; tä—them; vacaù—words.

Aware of the great love in their hearts, Kåñëa gently

smiled. Placing His eyes on all of them, He spoke.

Text 16

çré-bhagavän uväca

bhavatébhir märgaçérñe

kåtaà kätyäyané-vratam

mad-arthaà tac ca sa-phalaà

bhaviñyati na saàçayaù

çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead

said; bhavatébhiù—with you; märgaçérñe—in the month

of Märgaçérña; kåtam—done; kätyäyané—to worship

goddess Kätyäyané; vratam—a vow; mat—of Me;

artham—for the sake; tat—that; ca—and; sa-

phalam—fruitful; bhaviñyati—will be; na—no;

saàçayaù—doubt.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: To attain Me,

during the month of Märgaçérña you followed a vow to worship

goddess Kätyäyané. Your vow will bear its fruit. There is no

doubt of that.

Text 17

paraçvo 'hani cäöavyäà

kåñëä-tére manohare

yuñmäbhiç ca kariñyämi

räsaà pürëa-manoratham

paraçvaù—after tomorrow; ahani—on the day;

ca—and; aöavyäm—in the forest; kåñëä-tére—on the

Yamunä's shore; manohare—beautiful; yuñmäbhiù—with

you; ca—and; kariñyämi—I will do; räsam—a rasa

dance; pürëa-manoratham—that will fulfill all your desires.

The day after tomorrow, on the Yamunä's beautiful shore, I

will enjoy with You a räsa dance that will fulfill all your

desires.

ity uktvätha gate kåñëe

paripürëatame harau

präptänandä manda-hasä

gopyaù sarvä gåhän yayuù

iti—thus; uktvä—speaking; atha—then;

gate—gone; kåñëe—Kåñëa; paripürëatame—the Supreme

Personality of Godhead; harau—Lord Hari;

präpta—attained; änandäù——bliss; manda—gentle;

hasäù—simles; gopyaù—the gopés; sarväù—all;

gåhän—to their homes; yayuù—went.

After speaking these words, Lord Kåñëa, the perfect Supreme

Personality of Godhead, left. Then all the gopés, gently smiling

and their hearts filled with bliss, went to their homes.
