Åñi-rüpäkhyäna

The Story of the Gopés That Had Been Sages

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

gopénäà åñi-rüpäëäà

äkhyänaà çåëu maithila

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà

kåñëa-bhakti-vivardhanam

çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; gopénäm—of the

gopés; åñi-rüpäëäm—in the form of sages; äkhyänam—the

story; çåëu—hear; maithila—O king of Mithilä;

sarva-päpa-haram—removing all sins; puëyam—sacred;

kåñëa-bhakti-vivardhanam—increasing love for Lord Kåñëa.

Sré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, please hear the story of

the gopés that had been sages, a sacred story that removes all

sins and increases one's love for Lord Kåñëa.

Text 2

baìgeñu maìgalo näma

gopa äsén mahä-manäù

lakñmivän chruta-sampanno

nava-lakña-gaväà patiù

baìgeñu—in east Bengal; maìgalaù—Maìgala;

näma—named; gopa—gopa; äsén—was; mahä-

manäù—noble-hearted; lakñmivän—wealthy; çruta-

sampannaù—learned; nava-lakña-gavam—of nine-hundred thousand

cows; patiù—the master.

In east Bengal lived a noble-hearted, learned, and wealthy

gopa named Maìgala. He was the master of nine-hundred-thousand

cows.

Text 3

bhäryäù païca sahasräëi

babhüvus tasya maithila

kadäcid daiva-yogena

dhanaà sarvaà kñayaà gatam

bhäryäù—wives; païca sahasräëi—five

thousand; babhüvuù—were; tasya—of him;

maithila—O king of Mithilä; kadäcit—at a certain time; daiva-yogena—by destiny; dhanam—wealth;

sarvam—all; kñayam—to destruction; gatam—went.

O king of Mithilä, he had five thousand wives. One day all

his wealth was destroyed by fate.

Text 4

corair nétäs tasya gävaù

käçcid räjïä håtä balät

evaà dainye ca sampräpte

duùkhito maìgalo 'bhavat

coraiù—by thieves; nétäù—taken; tasya—his;

gävaù—cows; käçcit—some; räjïä—by the

king; håtä—taken; balät—by force;

evam—tyhus; dainye—poverty; ca—indeed;

sampräpte—attained; duùkhitaù—unhappy;

maìgalaù—Maìgala; abhavat—became.

Some of his cows were stolen by thieves and the rest were

forcibly taken by the king. Now a pauper, Maìgala was filled with

sorrow.

Text 5

tadä çré-rämasya varäd

daëòakäraëya-väsinaù

åñayaù strétvam äpannä

babhüvus tasya kanyakäù

tadä—then; çré-rämasya—of Lord räma; varät—from

the benediction; daëòakäraëya-väsinaù—living in Daëäka

forest; åñayaù—sages; strétvam—womanhood;

äpannä—attained; babhüvuù—became; tasya—of him;

kanyakäù—the daughters.

Ths sages of Daëòakäraëya, who by Lord Rämacandra's blessing

were destined to become gopés, became the daughters of Maìgala.

Text 6

dåñövä kanyä-samühaà sa

duùkhé gopo 'tha maìgalaù

uväca dainya-duùkhäòhya

ädhi-vyädhi-samäkuläù

dåñövä—seeing; kanyä-samüham—many daughters;

sa—he; duùkhé—unhappy; gopaù—the gopa;

atha—then; maìgalaù—Maìgala; uväca—said;

dainya-duùkhäòhyaù—unhappy with his poverty; ädhi-vyädhi-

samäkuläù—tormented with headaches and illnesses.

When he saw his many daughters, Maìgala-gopa became filled

with sorrow. Miserable in his poverty and tormented with

headaches and diseases, Maìgala spoke.

Text 7

çré-maìgala uväca

kià karomi kva gacchämi

ko me dukhaà vyapohati

çrér na bhütir näbhijano

na balaà me 'sti sämpratam

çré-maìgalaù uväca—Sré Maìgala said; kim—what?;

karomi—will I do; kva—where?; gacchämi—will I go; kaù—who; me—of me; dukham—the suffering;

vyapohati—removes; çréù—wealth; na—not;

bhütiù—opulebce; na—not; abhijanaù—family;

na—not; balam—strength; me—my; asti—is;

sämpratam—now.

Sré Maìgala said: What shall I do? Where shall I go? Who

will take away my sufferings? Now I have no wealth, no opulences,

no dynasty, and no strength.

Text 8

dhanaà vinä kathaà cäsäà

viväho hä bhaviñyati

bhojane yatra sandeho

dhanäçä tatra kédåçé

dhanam—welath; vinä—without; katham—how?;

ca—and; äsäm—of the girls; vivähaù—wedding;

hä—indeed; bhaviñyati—will be; bhojane—in eatiung; yatra—where; sandehaù—doubt; dhana—of wealth; äçä—hope; tatra—there; kédåçé—like what?

How will my daughters marry if I have no wealth? If even the

next meal is uncertain, where is the hope to gain wealth?

Texts 9 and 10

sati dainye kanyakäù syuù

käka-täléyavad gåhe

tasmät kasyäpi räjïas tu

dhanino balinas tv aham

däsyämy etäù kanyakäç ca

kanyänäà saukhya-hetave

kadarthé-kåtya täù kanyä

evaà buddhyä sthito 'bhavat

tadaiva mathuräd deçäd

gopaç caikaù samägataù

sati—being; dainye—poor; kanyakäù—the girls; syuh—are; käka-täléyavat—unexpectedly; gåhe—in the

home; tasmät—from that; kasyäpi—of someone;

räjïaù—a king; tu—indeed;

dhaninaù—wealthy; balinaù—powerful; tu—certainly; aham—I; däsyämi—will give; etäù—these;

kanyakäù—girls; ca—and; kanyänäm—of girls;

saukhya-hetave—for the happiness; kadarthé-kåtya—become

unhappy; täù—them; kanyä—the girls;

evam—thus; buddhyä—thinking; sthitaù—situated;

abhavat—became; tadä—then; eva—indeed;

mathurät—from Mathura; deçät—province; gopaù—gopa; ca—and; ekaù—one; samägataù—come.

Now that I am suddenly poor, how will I make my daughters

happy by marrying them to wealthy and powerful kings?

As Maìgala was thinking in this way, a gopa from Mathurä

district came to his home.

Text 11

çré-närada uväca

tértha-yäyé jayo näma

våddho buddhimatäà varaù

tan-mukhän nanda-räjasya

çrutaà vaibhavam adbhutam

çré-närada uväca—Sré Närada said; tértha-yäyé—a

pilgrim; jayaù—jaya; näma—named;

våddhaù—elderly; buddhimatäm—of the wise; varaù—the

best; tan-mukhän—from his mouth; nanda-räjasya—of

King Nanda; çrutam—heard; vaibhavam—the

opulences; adbhutam—wonderful.

Sré Närada said: From an elderly pilgrim named Jaya, who was

the wisest of the wise, Maìgala had heard of the fabulous wealth

of King Nanda.

Text 12

nanda-räjasya valaye

maìgalo dainya-péòitäù

vicintya preñayäm äsa

kanyakäç cäru-locanäù

nanda-räjasya—of King Nanda; valaye—in the circle; maìgalaù—mangala; dainya-péòitäù—suffering in

poverty; vicintya—considering; preñayäm äsa—sent; kanyakäù—daughters; cäru-locanäù—beautiful-eyed.

After some thought, the pauper Maìgala sent his beautiful-

eyed daughters to King Nanda's circle.

Text 13

tä nanda-räjasya gåhe

kanyakä ratna-bhüñitäù

gaväà gomaya-häriëyo

babhüvur go-vrajeñu ca

täù—they; nanda-räjasya—of King Nanda; gåhe—in

the home; kanyakä—the daughters; ratna-

bhüñitäù—decorated with jewels; gaväm—of cows;

gomaya-häriëyaù—taking the milk; babhüvuù—became; go-

vrajeñu—in the barns; ca—and.

In King Nanda's home the girls, now decorated with jewels,

milked the cows in the barns.

Text 14

çré-kåñëaà sundaraà dåñövä

kanyä jäti-smaräç ca täù

kälindé-sevanaà cakrur

nityaà çré-kåñëa-hetave

çré-kåñëam—Sré Kåñëa; sundaram—handsome;

dåñövä—seeing; kanyä—the girls; jäti-

smaräù—remembering their previous birth; ca—and;

täù—they; kälindé—of the Yamunä; sevanam—service; cakruù—did; nityam—regularly; çré-kåñëa-hetave—to

attain Sré Kåñëa.

Gazing at handsome Sré Kåñëa, and remembering their previous

birth, the girls daily worshiped the Yamunä to attain Kåñëa.

Text 15

athaikadä çyämaläìgé

kälindé dérgha-locanä

täbhyaù sva-darçanaà dattvä

varaà dätuà samudyatä

atha—then; ekadä—one day; çyämaläìgé—dark-

limbed; kälindé—Yamunä; dérgha-locanä—with large

eyes; täbhyaù—to them; sva-darçanam—own sight;

dattvä—giving; varam—blessing; datum—to give;

samudyatä—eager.

One day the large-eyed and dark-complexioned goddess Yamunä

appeared before them and offered to give them a benediction.

Text 16

tä vavrire vrajeçasya

putro bhüyät patiç ca naù

tathästu coktvä kälindé

tatraiväntaradhéyata

tä—they; vavrire—chose; vrajeçasya—of the king of

Vraja; putraù—the son; bhüyät—may be; patiù—the

husband; ca—and; naù—of us; tathä—so;

astu—be it; ca—and; uktvä—saying;é

tatra—there; eva—indeed; antaradhiyata—disappeared.

They said, "May Sré Kåñëa, the son of Vraja's king,

become our husband." Yamunä replied, "So be it," and

suddenly disappeared.

Text 17

täù präpta våndakäraëye

kärtikyäà räsa-maëòale

täbhiù särdhaà haré reme

surébhiù suraräò iva

täù—they; präpta—attained; våndakäraëye—in

Våndävana forest; kärtikyäm—in the month of Kartika;

räsa-maëòale—in the rasa dnace circle; täbhiù—with them; särdham—with; haré—Kåñëa; reme—enjoyed;

surébhiù—with the demigoddesses; suraräò—the king of

heaven; iva—as.

Later, in the month of Kärttika, in the räsa-dance circle,

Lord Kåñëa enjoyed with them as King Indra enjoys with many

heavenly girls.
