Çré Kåñëa-darçana-varëana

Description of Seeing Lord Kåñëa

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

adåñövä vatsakän etya

vatsapän puline hariù

ubhau vicinvän vipine

mene karma vidheù kåtam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said: ; adåñövä—not

seeing; vatsakän—the calves; etya—going;

vatsapän—to the gopas; puline—on the shore;

hariù—Kåñëa; ubhau—both; vicinvän—searching;

vipine—in the forest; mene—thought; karma—the

work; vidheù—of Brahmä; kåtam—done.

Çré Närada said: Not seeing the calves, returning to the

riverbank and not seeing the gopas, and then searching in the

forest for them both, Kåñëa thought, "This must be

Brahmä's work."

Text 2

tato gaväà gopékänäà

mudaà kartuà sa lélayä

sarvaà tu viçva-kåc cakre

hy ätmänam ubhayäyitam

tataù—then; gaväm—of the cows; gopékänäm—of the

gopés; mudam—happiness; kartum—to do;

sa—He; lélayä—playfully; sarvam—all;

tu—indeed; viçva-kåt—the creator of the universes;

cakre—made; hi—indeed; ätmänam—Himself;

ubhayäyitam—both.

Then, to please the cows and gopés, Lord Kåñëa, who is the

creator of the universes, made Himself into (the calves and

boys).

yävat—as; vatsapa—gopas; vatsänäm—and calves; vapuù—forms; päëi-padädikän—beginning weith feet and

hands; yävat—as; yañöi—sticks;

visana—horns; ädén—beginning with; yävac—as;

çéla—character; guëa—and qualities; ädikän—beginning

with; yävat—as; bhüñana-vasträdén—beginning with

graments and ornaments; tävac—so; chré-hariëä—by Lord

Kåñëa; svataù—pwrsonally; sarvam—all;

viñëumayam—consisting of Lord Viñëu; viçvam—the

universe; iti—thus; väkyam—the statement;

pradarçitam—demonstrated.

Whatever were the gopas' and calves' forms, with their

hands, feet, and other parts, whatever were their sticks, horns,

and other possessions, whatever were their characters, qualities,

and other features, and whatever were their clothes, ornaments,

and other things, Lord Kåñëa perfectly copied. In this way He

proved the Vedic statement: "sarvaà viñëumayaà viçvam"

(The entire universe is Lord Viñëu).

Text 5

ätma-vatsän ätma-gopaiç

cärayan kréòayä hariù

praviçan nanda-nagaraà

añöam-giri-gate ravau

ätma—self; vatsän—calves; ätma—self;

gopaiù—with gopas; cärayan—hering; kréòayä—with

pastimes; hariù—Kåñëa; praviçan—entered;

nanda-nagaram—the village of Nanda; añöam-giri-gate—on the

western horizon; ravau—the sun.

As the sun was setting on the western horizon, Kåñëa,

herding calves that were in truth Himself, and accompanied by

gopas that were also Himself, playfully entered Nanda's village.

Text 6

tat-tad-goñöhe påthaì nétvä

tat-tad-vatsän praveçya ca

kåñëo 'bhavat tat-tad-ätmä

tat-tad-gehaà praviñöavän

tat-tad-goñöhe—to the various barns;

påthak—variously; nétvä—bringing; tat-tad-vatsän—the

various calves; praveçya—bringin ginside; ca—and; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; abhavat—became; tat-tad-

ätmä—various; tat-tad-geham—various homes;

praviñöavän—entered.

The many gopas, who were all Kåñëa, led the various calves,

who were also Kåñëa, to their respective barns. Then the gopas

entered their own homes.

Text 7

çrutvä vaàçé-ravaà gopyaù

sambhramac chéghram utthitaù

payäàsi päyayäm äsur

lälayitvä sutän påthak

çrutvä—hearing; vaàçé—of the flute; ravam—the

sound; gopyaù—the gopés; sambhramat—fainted;

çéghram—at once3; utthitaù—stood up; payäàsi—milk; päyayäm äsuù—made flow; lälayitvä—embracing;

sutän—sons; påthak—individually.

Hearing the sound of the flute, the gopés fainted and then

suddenly stood up. As milk flowed from them, each embraced her

son.

Text 8

svän svän vätàsäàs tathä gävo

rambhamänän nirékñya ca

lihantyo jihvayäìgäni

payäàsi ca hy apäyayan

svän svän—their own; vätàsän—calves;

tathä—so; gävaù—the cows; rambhamänän—mooing;

nirékñya—seeing; ca—and; lihantyaù—licking;

jihvayäìgäni—iwth the tongue; payäàsi—milk;

ca—and; hi—indeed; apäyayan—made drink.

Seeing their calves, the cows mooed. They licked the calves

with their tongues, and made the calves drink their milk.

Text 9

abhavan mätaraù sarvä

gopyo gävo harer aho

ati-snehaà ca vavådhe

pürvato hi catur-guëam

abhavan—became; mätaraù—mothers; sarvä—all; gopyaù—the gopés; gävaù—cows; hareù—of Kåñëa; ahaù—Oh; ati-sneham—great love; ca—and;

vavådhe—expanded; pürvataù—than before; hi—indeed; catur-guëam—four times.

In this way all the gopés and cows became Kåñëa's mothers.

Their love for their children became four times what it had been.

sva-puträn lälayitvä tu

majjanonmardanädibhiù

paçcäd gopyaç ca kåñëasya

darçanaà kartum äyayuù

sva-puträn—own sons; lälayitvä—embracing;

tu—indeed; majjana—bathing; unmardana—massaging; ädibhiù—beginning with; paçcät—then; gopyaù—the

gopés; ca—and; kåñëasya—of Kåñëa; darçanam—the

sight; kartum—to do; äyayuù—attained.

As they embraced, bathed, massaged, and in other ways served

their sons, the gopés now gazed on Lord Kåñëa.

Text 11

anekänäà tu bälänäà

udvähäù kåñëa-rüpiëam

babhüvus täù vraje vadhvo

ratäù kåñëe tu koöiçaù

anekänäm—many; tu—indeed; bälänäm—of boys;

udvähäù—weddings; kåñëa—Kåñëa; rüpiëam—the forms; babhüvuù—were; täù—they; vraje—in Vraja;

vadhvaù—the girls; ratäù—in love; kåñëe—with

Kåñëa; tu—indeed; koöiçaù—millions.

Then the millions of gopé girls, who were all deeply in love

with Kåñëa, were married to the many gopa boys, who at that time

were all forms of Kåñëa.

Text 12

vatsa-päla-miñenäpi

svätmänaà hy ätmanä hareù

pälito vatsaraç caiko

babhüva vraja-maëòale

vatsa-päla—of being gopa boys; miñena—on the

pretext; api—also; svätmänam—Himself;

hi—indeed; ätmanä—Himself; hareù—of Lord Kåñëa;

pälitaù—protected; vatsaraù—year; ca—and;

ekaù—one; babhüva—was; vraja-maëòale—in the circle of

Vraja.

In the circle of Vraja one year passed with Kåñëa disguising

Himself as both the calves and gopas. He was the calves and He

was the gopas protecting the calves.

Text 13

sa-rämaç caikadhä vatsäàç

cäraëyaà cärayan yayau

häyanäpüraëéñv atra

païcañäsu ca ratriñu

sa-rämaù—with Balaräm; ca—and; ekadhä—one

day; vatsän—trhe calves; ca—and; äraëyam—to the

forest; cärayan—herding; yayau—went; häyana—one

year; apüraëéñu—unfulfilled; atra—there;

païcañäsu—five; ca—and; ratriñu—nights.

On the day when there were only five nights remaining to

complete the year, Kåñëa and Balaräma went to the forest as They

herded the calves.

Text 14

taträpi düräc carataç ca gävo

vatsän upavrajya gireç ca çåìgät

lihanti cäìgäni vilokayantyo

hy apäyayaàs ta ämåtäni sadyaù

taträpi—still; düräc—from far away;

carataù—going; ca—and; gävaù—the cows; vatsän—to

the calves; upavrajya—approaching; gireù—from the

mountain; ca—and; çåìgät—from the top;

lihanti—licks; ca—and; aìgäni—limbs;

vilokayantyaù—gazing; hi—indeed; apäyayan—gave to

drink; ta—they; ämåtäni—nectar; sadyaù—at once.

From far away on the summit of Govardhana Hill the cows ran

to their calves, licked their bodies, gazed on them, and made

them drink the nectar of their milk.

Text 15

govardhanäd adho vatsän

péta-dugdhän vilokya ca

snehävåtaù sthitä gäç ca

gopäla dädåçur nåpa

govardhanät—Govardhana Hill; adhaù—below;

vatsän—the calves; péta—drunk; dugdhän—the milk; vilokya—seeing; ca—and; snehävåtaù—filled with

affection; sthitä—situated; gäù—the cows;

ca—and; gopäla—gopas; dädåçuù—saw; nåpa—O king.

O king, the cowherd men saw the calves, who had already

drunk their (mothers') milk, staying below Govardhana Hill, and

they saw the cows, overcome with love for their calves, also

staying there.

tataù krodhena mahatä

parvatäd avatérya ca

tädanärthe sva-puträëäà

äjagmuù kacchato drutam

tataù—then; krodhena—with anger;

mahatä—great; parvatät—from the hill;

avatérya—descending; ca—and; tädana-arthe—to

punish; sva-puträëäm—own sons; äjagmuù—came;

kacchataù—vicinity; drutam—quickly.

As the men came down from the hill to hit the cows, they

suddenly came upon their own sons.

tadägatä samipe tu

puträëäà gopa-näyakäù

svän svän sutäàs tadonnéyä

hy aìke kåtvä milanti vai

tadä—then; ägatäù—come; samipe—near;

tu—indeed; puträëäm—of sons; gopa-näyakäù—the gopa

men; svän svän—own; sutäàù—sons; tadä—then; unnéyä—placing; hi—indeed; aìke—on the lap;

kåtvä—doing; milanti—meet; vai—indeed.

Meeting them, the gopa men immediately placed their sons on

their laps.

Text 18

yathä yuväno våddhäç cä

snehäd açru-pariplutäù

svän svän pauträn gåhétvä tu

hy upaviñöä milanti hi

yathä—as; yuvänaù—young; våddhäù—old;

cä—and; snehät—out of love; açru-pariplutäù—drowning

in tears; svän—own; svän—own;

pauträn—grandsons; gåhétvä—taking; tu—indeed;

hi—indeed; upaviñöä—sat; milanti—meet;

hi—indeed.

Young and old were flooded with tears of love. The men

embraced their sons and grandsons and sat down with them.

Text 19

evaà prema-parän sarvän

dåñövä saìkarñaëo balaù

bahu-prakäraà sandehaà

kåtvä manasi so 'bravét

evam—thus; prema-parän—filled with love;

sarvän—all; dåñövä—seeing; saìkarñaëaù—Balaräma; balaù—powerful; bahu-prakäram—many kinds;

sandeham—doubt; kåtvä—doing; manasi—in the mind; saù—He; abravét—said.

Seeing everyone so affectionate, powerful Balaräma had many

doubts. In His mind he said:

aho kià vatsarät präpto

na jïäto 'pi vraje mayä

ati-snehas tu sarveñäà

vardhate ca dine dine

ahaù—-Oh; kim—what?; vatsarät—from a year;

präptaù—attained; na—not; jïätaù—understood; api—even; vraje—in Vraja;

mayä—by Me; ati-snehaù—very affectionate;

tu—indeed; sarveñäm—of all; vardhate—increases;

ca—also; dine dine—day after day.

I do not understand what has happened for the past year.

Everyone is so affectionate, and their love increases day after

day.

Text 21

keyaà mäyä samäyätä

deva-gandharva-rakñasäm

nänyä me mohiné mäyä

vinä kåñëasya sämpratam

kä—what?; iyam—this; mäyä—illusion;

samäyätä—come; deva-gandharva-rakñasäm—of the devas,

gandharvas, and raksasas; na—not; anyä—another; me—Me; mohiné—bewildering; mayä—illusion;

vinä—without; kåñëasya—Kåñëa; sampratam—now.

Is this an illusion made by the devas, gandharvas, or

räkñasas? No one but Kåñëa can bewilder Me.

Text 22

evaà vicärya rämas tu

locane sve nyamilayat

bhütaà bhävyaà bhaviñyaà ca

divyäkñäbhyäà dadarça ha

evam—in this way; vicärya—thinking;

rämaù—Balaräma; tu—indeed; locane—eyes;

sve—own; nyamilayat—closed; bhütam—was;

bhävyam—is; bhaviñyam—will be; ca—and;

divya—transcendental; akñäbhyäm—with eyes;

dadarça—saw; ha—indeed.

Thinking this, Balaräma closed His eyes. Then with

transcendental eyes He looked at the past, present, and future.

Text 23

sarvän vatsäàs tathä gopän

vaàçé-vetra-vibhüñitän

barhi-pakña-dharän çyämän

bhågv-aìghri-kåta-kautukän

sarvän—all; vatsän—the calves; tathä—and;

gopän—gopas; vaàçé-vetra-vibhüñitän—decorated with flutes

and sticks; barhi-pakña-dharän—wearing peacock

feathers; çyämän—dark; bhågv-aìghri-kåta-

kautukän—wearing the mark of Bhågu Muni's foot.

He saw that all the calves and gopas had become dark boys,

each decorated with a flute and stick, peacock feathers, Bhågu

Muni's footprint, . . .

guïjänäà sragbhir eva ca

padmänäà kumudänäà ca

hy eñäà srägbhir vibhüñitän

jälakänäm—of flowers; maëénäm—of jewels;

ca—and; guïjänäm—of jewels; sragbhiù—with

necklaces; eva—indeed; ca—and; padmänäm—of

lotuses; kumudänäm—of water lilies; ca—and;

hi—indeed; eñäm—of them; srägbhiù—with garlands; vibhüñitän—decorated.

. . . necklaces of flowers, jewels, guïjä, lotuses, and

water lilies, . . .

kuëòalair alakair våtän

änanda-varñän kurvanän

çarat-padma-dåçair api

uñëéçaiù—with turbans; mukuöaiù—crowns;

divyaiù—splendid; kuëòalaiù—with earrings;

alakaiù—with curly locks of hair; våtän—covered;

änanda—of bliss; varñän—showers; kurvanän—doing; çarat—autumn; padma—lotus; dåçaiù—with eyes;

api—also.

. . . turbans, crowns, and splendid earrings, endowed with curly

locks of hair, making showers of bliss with the glances of their

autumn-lotus eyes, . . .

koöi-kandarpa-lävaëyän

näsa-mautika-çobhitän

sikha-bhüñaëa-samyuktän

päëi-bhüñana-bhüñitän

koöi—millions; kandarpa—of Kämadevas;

lävaëyän—handsome; näsa—nose; mautika—pearl;

çobhitän——decorated; çikhä-bhüñaëa-samyuktän—with ornaments

on top of the head; päëi-bhüñana-bhüñitän—decorated with

ornaments on Their hands.

. . . more handsome than millions of Kämadevas, their noses

decorated with pearls and their heads and hands decorated with

many ornaments, . . .

dvi-bhujän péta-vastraiç ca

käïcé-kaöaka-nüpuraiù

prabhätara-vikoöénäà

çobhäbhiù çobhitän çubhän

dvi-bhujän—two arms; péta-vastraiù—with yellow

garments; ca—and; käïcé—with belts;

kaöaka—with bracelets; nüpuraiù—with anklets;

prabhätara-vikoöénäm—splendid as millions of rising suns;

çobhabhiù—with splendor; çobhitän—glorious;

subhän—glorious.

. . . having two arms, glorious with yellow garments, belts,

bracelets, and anklets, and more glorious than millions of rising

suns.

uttare giri-räjasya

yamunäyäç ca dakñiëe

acañöa våndakäraëye

sarvän kåñëaà haläyudhaù

uttare—on the top; giri-räjasya—of the king of

mountains; yamunäyäù—of the Yamunä; ca—and;

dakñiëe—in the south; acañöa—saw; våndakäraëye—in

Våndävana; sarvän—all; kåñëam—Kåñëa;

haläyudhaù—Balaräma.

Balaräma saw that all these forms on top of Govardhana Hill,

and in Våndävana forest south of the Yamunä were all Kåñëa.

jïätvä kåñëa-kåtaà karma

tathä vidhi-kåtaà balaù

punar vatsän vatsapäàç ca

paçyan kåñëam uväca ha

jïatvä—understanding; kåñëa-kåtam—done by

Kåñëa; karma—work; tathä—so; vidhi-kåtam—done

by Brahmä; balaù—Balaräma; punaù—again;

vatsän—the calves; vatsapän—the gopas; ca—and;

paçyan—seeing; kåñëam—to Kåñëa; uväca—said;

ha—indeed.

Understanding what Brahmä had done and what Kåñëa had done,

and looking again at the calves and gopas, Balaräma said to

Kåñëa:

brahmänanto dharma indraù çivaç ca

sevante taà bhakti-yuktaù sadaite

svätmarämaù pürëa-kämaù pareçaù

srañöuà çaktaù koöiço 'ëòäni yaù khe

brahmä—Brahmä; anantaù—Ananta; dharma—yama; indraù—Indra; sivaù—Çiva; ca—and;

sevante—serve; tam—him; bhakti-yuktaù—with

devotion; sadä—always; ete—they;

svätmarämaù—self-satisfied; pürëa-kämaù—desires always

fulfilled; pareçaù—the Supreme Lord; srañöum—to

create; çaktaù—able; koöiçaù—millions;

aëòäni—of universes; yaù—who; khe—in the sky.

The devotees Brahmä, Ananta, Yama, Indra, and Çiva always

worship the Supreme Lord, who is the controller of everything,

who is self-satisfied, whose desires are always fulfilled, and

who has the power to create many millions of universes in the

sky.

çré-närada uväca

evaà bruvati çré-rame

tavat taträgato vidhiù

dadarça kåñëaà rämaà ca

vatsakair vatsapaiù samam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; evam—thus;

bruvati—says; çré-rame—as Balaräm; tavat—then;

tatra—there; ägataù—came; vidhiù—Brahmä;

dadarça—saw; kåñëam—Kåñëa; rämam—Balaräma;

ca—and; vatsakaiù—with the calves; vatsapaiù—and

gopas; samam—with.

Çré Närada said: As Balaräma was speaking, Brahmä came there

and saw Kåñëa, Balaräma, the calves, and the gopas.

Text 32

aho kåñëena cänétä

yatra sarve dhåtä mayä

iti bruvan yayau sthäne

tatra sarvän dadarça saù

ahaù—Oh; kåñëena—by Kåñëa; ca—and;

änétä—brought; yatra—where; sarve—all;

dhåtä—held; mayä—by me; iti—thus;

bruvan—saying; yayau—went; sthäne—in the place;

tatra—there; sarvän—all; dadarça—saw; saù—he.

Saying, "Kåñëa brought back all the (calves and

gopas) I took away," Brahmä left and saw them all still there

(where he had hid them).

Text 33

dåñövä prasuptän sarväàs tu

sa ägatya vraje punaù

vatsapälair harià vékñya

manasi präha vismitaù

dåñövä—seeing; prasuptän—asleep; sarvän——all; tu—indeed; sa—her; ägatya—coming; vraje—to

Vraja; punaù—again; vatsapälaiù—with the gopas; harim—Lord Kåñëa; vékñya—seeing; manasi—in his

mind; präha—said; vismitaù—astonished.

Seeing them all still asleep, he returned to Vraja and gazed

again at Kåñëa and the gopas. Astonished, in his mind he said:

aho vicitraà te sarve

kutra sthänät samägataù

kréòanto pürvavac cätra

säkaà kåñëena kréòanaiù

ahaù—O; vicitram—a wonder; te—they;

sarve—all; kutra—from what?; sthänät—place;

samägataù—come; kréòantaù—playing; pürvavat-as

before; ca—and; atra—here; säkam—with;

kåñëena—Kåñëa; kréòanaiù—with pastimes;

This is a great wonder. From where did all these boys come

that now they are playing with Kåñëa just as before?

Text 35

mat-truöir vatsaraç caiko

vyatito 'bhün mahé-tale

sarve prasannatäà präptä

na jïätaù kenacit kvacit

mat—of me; truöiù—a moment; vatsaraù—year;

ca—and; ekaù—one; vyatitaù—passed; abhün—hjas

been; mahé-tale—on the earth; sarve—all;

prasannatäm—happiness; präptä—attained; na—nor;

jïätaù—understood; kenacit—how; kvacit—where.

What is for me only a moment is a year on earth. I don't

understand how they are still manifested as before.

Text 36

evaà sammohayan brahmä

mohanaà viçva-mohanam

sva-mäyayändha-käreëa

sva-gätraà naiva dåñöavän

evam—thus; sammohayan—bewildering;

brahmä—Brahma; mohanam—bewilderment; viçva-

mohanam—bewilderment of the universe; sva—own;

mäyayä—by illusion; andha-käreëa—with blinding dsrkness; sva-gätram—own body; na—not; eva—indeed;

dåñöavän—saw.

In this way Brahmä, who bewilders the entire universe, was

so blinded by Kåñëa's illusion that he could not see even his own

body.

Text 37

vatsapäläpaharaëät

kim abhüj jagataù pateù

aho khadyota-vad vedhä

çré-kåñëa-ravi-sammukhe

vatsapäla—of the gopas; apaharaëät—from kidnapping; kim—what?; abhüt—was; jagataù—of the universe; pateù—the master; ahaù—Oh; khadyota-vat—like a

firefly; vedhä—Brahmä; çré-kåñëa—Çré Kåñëa;

ravi—the sun; sammukhe—before.

What happened to Brahmä, the master of the universe, after

he stole the gopas? The creator Brahmä became like a firefly

standing before the sun of Çré Kåñëa.

Text 38

evaà vimuhyati sati

jaòé-bhüte ca brahmaëi

sva-mäyäà kåpayäkåñya

kåñëaù svaà darçanaà dadau

evam—thus; vimuhyati—bewildered; sati—being

so; jaòé-bhüte—stunned; ca—and;

brahmaëi—Brahmä; sva-mäyäm—own illusion;

kåpayä—mercifully; äkåñya—pulling away;

kåñëaù—Kåñëa; svam—own; darçanam—sight;

dadau—gave.

As Brahmä stood, stunned and bewildered, Kåñëa mercifully

removed His own illusory potency and revealed Himself.

Text 39

evaà tatra sakåd brahmä

go-vatsän gopa-därakän

sarvän äcañöa çré-kåñëaà

bhaktyä vijïäna-locanaiù

evam—thus; tatra—there; sakåt—at once;

brahmä—Brahma; go-vatsän—the calves; gopa-därakän—the

gopas boys; sarvän—all; äcañöa—saw; çré-

kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; bhaktyä—with devotion; vijïäna—of knowledge; locanaiù—with eyes.

With eyes of knowledge Brahmä devotedly gazed at the calves

and gopa boys and saw that they were all Çré Kåñëa.

dadarçätha vidhis tatra

bahir antaù çarérataù

svätmanä sahitaà räjan

sarvaà viñëumayaà jagat

dadarça—saw; atha—then; vidhiù—Brahmä;

tatra—there; bahiù—outside; antaù—inside;

çarérataù—the body; svätmanä—own self;

sahitam—with; räjan—O king; sarvam—everything;

viñëumayam—consisting of Lord Viñëu; jagat—the universe.

O king, Brahmä then saw that the entire universe, including all that

was inside and outside his body, and including his own self, was

all the potency of Lord Viñëu.

Text 41

evaà vilokya brahmä tu

jado bhütvä sthiro 'bhavat

våndävad våndakäraëye

prädåçyeta yathä tathä

evam—thus; vilokya—seeing; brahmä—Brahma;

tu—indeed; jadaù—stunned; bhütvä—becoming;

sthiraù—stationary; abhavat—became; våndävat—like a

tulasé plant; våndakäraëye—in Våndävana forest;

prädåçyeta—was seen; yathä—as; tathä—so.

Gazing at this, Brahmä became stunned. He looked like an

unmoving tulasé plant in Våndävana forest.

Text 42

svätmanaù—of his self; mahimam—the glory;

drañöum—to see; hi—indeed; anése—unable;

api—although; ca—and; brahmaëi—Brahmä;

cacchäda—pulled the cover; sapadi—at once; jïatvä—understanding; mäyä—of illusion;

javanikäm—the curtain; hariù—Kåñëa.

Aware that Brahmä had no power to continue gazing at the

Lord's glories, Kåñëa at once pulled the curtain of His illusory

potency.

tataù pralabdha-nayanaù

srañöa supta ivotthitaù

unmélya nayane kåcchrad

dadarçedaà sahätmanä

tataù—from that; pralabdha—bewildered;

nayanaù—eyes; srañöa—the creator; supta—asleep;

iva—as if; utthitaù—rose; unmélya—opening;

nayane—his eyes; kåcchrat—with difficulty;

dadarça—saw; idam—this; saha—with;

ätmanä—himself.

Then, his eyes covered, the creator Brahmä became as if

asleep. Awakening, and with difficulty opening his eyes, he saw

Våndävana and he also saw himself.

samähitas tatra bhütvä

sadyo 'paçyad diço daça

çrémad-våndävanaà ramyaà

vasanté-latikänvitam

samähitaù—calm; tatra—there; bhütvä—having

become; sadyaù—at once; apaçyat—saw;

diçaù—directions; daça—ten; çrémat—beautiful;

våndävanam—Våndävana; ramyam—delightful; vasanté-

latikä—vasanti vines; anvitam—with.

Now composed and peaceful, in the ten directions he saw,

filled with flowering vasanté vines, charming and beautiful

Våndävana, . . .

çardüla-bälakair yatra

kréòanti måga-bälakaù

çyenaiù kapotä nakulaiù

sarpä vaira-vivarjitäù

çardüla—tiger; bälakaiù—with cubs;

yatra—where; kréòanti—play; måga-bälakaù—fawns;

syenaiù—with eagles; kapotäù—doves; nakulaiù—with

mongeese; sarpä—snakes; vaira—enmity;

vivarjitäù—without.

. . . where without any enmity fawns play with tiger cubs, doves

play with eagles, and snakes play with mongeese.

tataç ca våndakäraëye

sa-päëi-kavalaà vidhiù

vatsän sakhén vicinvantaà

ekaà kåñëaà dadarça saù

tataù—then; ca—and; våndakäraëye—in Våndävana

forest; sa-päëi-kavalam—with a handful of food;

vidhiù—Brahma; vatsän—the calves; sakhén—friends; vicinvantam—searching; ekam—alone;

kåñëam—Kåñëa; dadarça—saw; saù—he.

Then Brahmä saw Kåñëa, with a morsel of food in His hand,

searching for His calves and friends in Våndävana forest.

Text 47

dåñövä gopäla-veñeëa

guptaà goloka-vallabham

jïätvä säkñäd dharià brahmä

bhéto 'bhüt sva-kåtena ca

dåñövä-having seen; gopäla-veñeëa—in the form of a

gopa; guptam—hidden; goloka-vallabham—the beloved of

Goloka; jïätvä—understanding; säkñät—at

once; harim—Lord Hari; brahmä—Brahmä;

bhétaù—frightened; abhüt—became; sva-kåtena—because of

what he had done; ca—and.

Gazing at Him, and suddenly understanding that Kåñëa was

Lord Hari, the beloved of Goloka, the Supreme Personality of

Godhead now disguised as an ordinary gopa, Brahmä became afraid

for what he had done.

Text 48

taà prasädayituà räjan

jvalantaà sarvato diçam

lajjayäväë-mukho bhütvä

hy avatérya sva-vähanät

tam—Him; prasädayitum—to please; räjan—O

king; jvalantam—shining; sarvataù—in all;

diçam—directions; lajjayä—with embarrassment; aväk-

mukhaù—silent; bhütvä—becoming; hi—indeed;

avatérya—descended; sva-vähanät—from his carrier.

O king, to beg for pardon from the Lord, whose glory filled

all directions, Brahmä, speechless with embarrassment, descended

from his swan-carrier.

Text 49

çanair upasasäreçaà

prasédeti vadan naman

sravad-varñäçru-dattärghaù

sa papätäthä daëòavat

çanaiù—slowly; upasasära—approached; éçam—the

Lord; praséda—be kind; iti—thus;

vadan—saying; naman—bowing down; sravat—flowing; varña—shower; açru—tears; datta—offered;

ärghaù—arghya; sa—he; papäta—fell down;

athä—then; daëòavat—like a stick.

Slowly he approached the Lord. Saying, "Please be

kind", bowing down, and with a streams of tears offering arghya,

he fell down like a stick.

Text 50

utthäyäçvasya taà kåñëaù

priyaà priya iva spåçan

surän su-bhüvi düra-sthän

äluloka sudhärdra-dåk

utthäya—rising; äçvasya—appeasing; tam—Him; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; priyam—beloved; priya—a lover;

iva—like; spåçan—touching; surän—the demiogds;

su-bhüvi—on the earth; düra-sthän—far away;

äluloka—saw; sudhä—nectar; ardra—wet; dåk—eyes.

Pulling Brahmä up, comforting him, and gently touching him

as a lover touches his beloved, Lord Kåñëa, His eyes wet with

nectar, glanced at the many demigods now standing far away.

Text 51

tato jaya-jayety-uccaiù

stuvatäà namatäà samam

tad-dayädåñöa-dåñöänäà

sänandaù sambhramo 'bhavat

tataù—then; jaya-jayety-uccaiù—with loud calls of

Victory! Victory!; stuvatäm—praying; namatäm—bowing

down; samam—with; tad-dayä—His mercy; adåñöa-

dåñöänäm—a slight glance; sänandaù—blissful;

sambhramaù—respectful; abhavat—became.

When the demigods received Lord Kåñëa's merciful glance they

called out, "Glory! Glory!", bowed down, and offered

prayers. Pleased with them, Kåñëa offered them all respect.

Text 52

dåñövä harià tatra samasthitaà vidhir

nanäma taà bhakti-manaù kåtäïjaliù

stutià cakäräçu sa daëòaval luöhan

prahåñöa-roma bhuvi gadgadäkñaraù

dåñövä—seeing; harim—Kåñëa; tatra—there;

samasthitam—manifested; vidhiù—Brahma; nanäma—bowed

down; tam—to Him; bhakti—with devotion;

manaù—in his heart; kåtäïjaliù—with folded

hands; stutim—prayers; cakära—offered; äçu—at

once; sa—he; daëòavat—like a stick;

luöhan—falling to the ground; prahåñöa-romäù—his bodily

hairs erect; bhuvi—on the gorund; gadgada-akñaraù—in

a choked voice.

Gaizing at Lord Kåñëa standing there, and his heart filled

with devotion, with folded hands Brahmä bowed down. Falling like

a stick to the ground, the hairs of his body erect in ecstasy,

and his voice choked with emotion, Brahmä offered prayers.
