Patala-paddhati-varn_ana
The Names and Worship of Sré Yamunä
Text 1
çré-mandhätoväca
krsnäyäù patalam punyam
kämadam paddhatim tathä
vada mäm muni-cärdula
tvam säksäj jnäna-cevadhiù
çré-mandhätä uväca - Sré Mandhätä said; krsnäyäù - of the
Yamunä; patalam - the patala; punyam - sacred;
kämadam - fulfilling desires; paddhatim - the paddhati;
tathä - so; vada - please tell; mäm - to me; muni-
cärdula - O tiger among sages; tvam - you;
säksät - directly; jnäna-cevadhiù - filled with
knowledge.
Sré Mandhätä said: O tiger among sages, you are filled with
transcendental knowledge. Please describe to me the Yamunä-patala
and the Yamunä-paddhati, which fulfill all desires.

çré-saubharir uväca
patalam paddhatim vaksye
yamunäyä mahä-mate
krtvä crutvätha japtvä vä
jévan-mukto bhaven naraù
çré-saubharir uväca - Sré Saubhari said;
patalam - patala; paddhatim - paddhati; vaksye - I will
speak; yamunäyä - of the Yamunä; mahä-mate - O noble-
hearted one; krtvä - having done; crutvä - having
heard;, atha - then; japtvä - having chanted;
vä - or; jévat - while alive in this world;
muktaù - liberated; bhaven - may be; naraù - a person.
Sré Saubhari said: I will now describe to you the Yamunä-
patala and the Yamunä-paddhati. One who performs them, hears
them, or chants them becomes liberated even in this life.

pranavam purvam uddhrtya
mäyä-béjam tataù param
ramä-béjam tataù krtvä
käma-bijam vidhänataù
pranavam - Om; purvam - first; uddhrtya - reciting;
mäyä-béjam - the maya-bija; tataù - then;
param - then; ramä-béjam - the Rama-béja syllable;
tataù - then; krtvä - doing; käma-bijam - the Käma-béja
syllable; vidhänataù - accordingly.
First one says Om, then the Mäyä-béja, then the Ramä-béja,
and then the Käma-béja.

kälindéti caturthy ante
devé-padam ataù param
namaù paccät samvidhärya
japen mantram imam naraù
kälindi - Kalindi; iti - thus; caturthy - in the dative
case; ante - at the end; devé-padam - the word devi;
ataù param - then; namaù - namaù; paccät - then;
samvidhärya - placing; japen - chanting;
mantram - mantram; imam - this; naraù - a person.
Then one takes the word Kälindé, places the word devé after
it, places these words in the dative case, and then adds the word
namaù. This is the mantra that one chants.
Note: The mantra then becomes, "Om hrém çrém
klém kälindyai devyai namaù".

japtvaikädaca laksäni
mantra-siddhir bhaved bhuvi
janaiù prärthyäc ca ye kämäù
sarve präpyäù svatac ca te
japtva - chanting; ekädaca laksäni - eleven syllables;
mantra-siddhiù - perfect mantra; bhavet - is; bhuvi - on
the earth; janaiù - by people; prärthyäù - requested;
ca - and; ye - which; kämäù - desires;
sarve - all; präpyäù - to be attained;
svataù - spontaneously; ca - and; te - they.
They who chant this eleven-syllable mantra attain
perfection. They attain all their desires.

vidhäya soòaca-dalam
padmam simhäsane cubhe
karnikäyäm ca kälindém
nyasec chré-krsna-samyutäm
vidhäya - placing; soòaca-dalam - sixteen petal;
padmam - lotus; simhäsane - on a throne;
cubhe - beautiful; karnikäyäm - in the whorl of a lotus;
ca - and; kälindém - Yamunä; nyasec - places; chré-
krsna-samyutäm - with Sré Krsna.
In a sacred circle one should draw a sixteen-petal lotus
flower. In the whorl of the lotus one should write the words Sré
Krsna and Kälindé.

gomatém kaucikém veném
sindhum godävarém tathä
veda-smrtim vetravatém
catadrum sarayum tathä
pujayen mänava-crestha
rsi-kulyäm kakudminém
prthak prthak tad-dalesu

jähnavém-Jähnavé; virajäm - Virajä;
krsnäm - Krsna; candrabhägäm - Candrabhägä;
sarasvatém - Sarasvaté; gomatém - Gomaté;
kaucikém - Kauciké; veném - Vené; sindhum - Sindhu;
godävarém - Godävaré; tathä - then; veda-smrtim - Veda-
smrti; vetravatém - Vetravaté; catadrum - Satadrum;
sarayum - Sarayu; tathä - then; pujayen - should
worship; mänava-crestha - best of men; rsi-kulyämRsi-
kulyä; kakudminém - Kakudminé; prthak
prthak - specifically; tad-dalesu - on the leaves;
näma - names; uccarya - writing; vidhänataù - in order.
On the petals one should write the names Jähnavé, Virajä,
Krsna, Candrabhägä, Sarasvaté, Gomaté, Kauciké, Vené, Sindhu,
Godävaré, Vedasmrti, Vetravaté, Satadru, Sarayu, Rsi-kulyä, and
Kakudminé. Then an exalted person should worship the lotus
flower.

vrndävanam govardhanam
vrndäm ca tulasém tathä
catur-déksu vidhäyäcu
pujayen nämabhiù prthak
vrndävanam - Vrndävana; govardhanam - Govardhana;
vrndäm - Vrndä; ca - and; tulasém - Tulasé;
tathä - then; catur-déksu - in the four directions
vidhäya - placing; äcu - at once; pujayen - should
worship; nämabhiù - with names; prthak - specific.
Then one should write the names Vrndävana, Govardhana,
Vrndä, and Tulasé in the four directions. Then one should worship
the lotus with these names.

om namo bhagavatyai kalinda-nandinyai surya-kanyakäyai yama-
bhaginyai çré-krsna-priyäyai yuthé-bhutäyai svähä, anena
mantrenävähanädi-soòacopacärän samähita upäharet.
om - Om; namaù - obeisances; bhagavatyai - to the
goddess; kalinda-nandinyai - the daughter of Mount
Kalinda; surya-kanyakäyai - the daughter of the sun;
yama-bhaginyai - the sister of Yamaraja; çré-krsna-
priyäyai - the beloved of Krsna; yuthé-bhutäyai - who has become
a gopé; svähä, - Svaha; anena - by this;
mantrena - mantra; avahanadi - taking;
coòacopacärän - sixteen objects of worship;
samähita - careful; upäharet - should worship.
Then one should chant the mantra, "om namo
bhagavatyai kalinda-nandinyai surya-kanyakäyai yama-bhaginyai
çré-krsna-priyäyai yuthé-bhutäyai svähä (Obeisances to goddess
Yamunä, the daughter of Mount Kalinda, the daughter of the sun-
god, the sister of Yamaräja, the gopé-beloved of Sré Krsna)."
Then, offering sixteen articles one should carefully offer
worship.
Texts 11 and 12
ity evam patalam viddhi
tubhyam vaksyämi paddhatim
yävat sampurnatäm yäti
puraccaranam eva hi
tävad bhaved brahmacäré
japen mauna-vraté dvijaù
yava-bhojé bhumi-cäyé
patra-bhug jita-mänasaù
ity - thus; evam - thus; patalam - patala;
viddhi - know; tubhyam - to you; vaksyämi - I will
speak; paddhatim - the paddahti; yävat - as;
sampurnatäm - completion; yäti - attains;
puraccaranam - preparatory ritual; eva - indeed;
hi - indeed; tävat - so; bhavet - is;
brahmacäré - brahmacari; japen - should chant; mauna-
vraté - silent; dvijaù - brähmana; yava-bhoji - eating
barley; bhumi-cäyé - taking rest on the ground; patra-
bhug - eating leaves; jita-mänasaù - controlling the mind.
Please know that what I have just spoken is the patala. Now
I will speak to you the paddhati. After the puraccarana is
completed one should live as a brahmacäré brähmana, keeping a vow of silence, eating leaves and barley, sleeping on the ground,
controlling one's mind, and chanting mantras.

kämam krodham tathä lobham
moham dvesam visrjya saù
bhaktyä paramayä räjan
vartamänas tu decakaù
kämam - lust; krodham - anger; tathä - so;
lobham - greed; moham - ilussion; dvesam - hatred;
visrjya - abandoning; saù - he; bhaktyä - with devotion;
paramayä - great; räjan - O king;
vartamänaù - staying; tu - indeed; decakaù - devotee.
O king, one should free oneself from lust, anger,
bewilderment, and hatred, and with great devotion one should
chant mantras.
Text 14
brähme muhurta utthäya
dhyätvä devém kalindajäm
ärunodaya-veläyäm
nadyäm snänam samäcaret
brähme muhurta - at brahma-muhurta; utthäya - rising;
dhyätvä - meditating; devém - on the goddess;
kalindajäm - Yamunä; ärunodaya-veläyäm - at sunrise;
nadyäm - in the river; snänam - bathing; samäcaret - should
perform.
During brähma-muhurta one should meditate on goddess Yamunä
and at sunrise one should bathe in the Yamunä.

madhyähne cäpi sandhyäyäm
sandhyä-vandana-tat-paraù
samäpte niyame räjan
kälindé-téram ästhitaù
madhyähne - at midday; cäpi - and; sandhyäyäm - at
sunset; sandhyä-vandana-tat-paraù - offering obeisances;
samäpte - completed; niyame - restriction; räjan - O
king; kälindé-téram - on the Yamunä's shore;
ästhitaù - situated.
At midday and sunset one should again offer obeisances to
the Yamunä. O king, when this vow of worshiping the Yamunä is
completed, one should stand at the Yamunä's shore.
Text 16
daca-laksam brähmanänäm
sa-putränäm mahätmanäm
pujayitvä gandha-puspair
dattvä tebhyo su-bhojanam
daca-laksam - a million; brähmanänäm - brähmanas;
sa-putränäm - with their sons; mahätmanäm - great souls;
pujayitvä - worshiping; gandha - fragrant; puspaiù - with
flowers; dattvä - giving; tebhyaù - to them; su-
bhojanam - delicious food.
Then one should worship one million exalted brähmana along
with their sons. One should offer them fragrant flowers and
delicious foods.
Text 17
vastra-bhusana-sauvarna-
päträni prasphuranti ca
daksinäc ca cubhä dadyät
tataù siddhir bhavet khalu
vastra - garments; bhusana - ornaments;
sauvarna - golden; päträni - dishes;
prasphuranti - manifest; ca - and; daksinäc - daksina;
ca - and; cubhä - auspicious; dadyät - should offer;
tataù - then; siddhiù - perfect; bhavet - is;
khalu - indeed.
Then one should offer them garments, ornaments, and golden
cups. In this way one should offer them daksinä. Then one's
observance of this vow is properly completed.

iti te paddhatiù proktä
mayä räjan mahä-mate
kuru tvam niyamam sarvam
kim bhuyaù crotum icchasi
iti - thus; te - to you; paddhatiù - paddhati;
proktä - spoken; mayä - by me; räjan - O king; mahä-
mate - noble-hearted; kuru - please do; tvam - you;
niyamam - vow; sarvam - all; kim - what?;
bhuyaù - more; crotum - to hear; icchasido you wish.
O noble-hearted king, in this way I have described to you
the Yamunä-paddhati. Please follow this vow in all respects. What
more do you wish to hear?
