Kaàsa-mantra

Advice to Kaàsa

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

vasudeva-sutaà devaà

kaàsa-cäëüra-mardanam

devaké-paramänandaà

kåñëaà vande jagad-gurum

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; vasudeva-sutam—the

son of Vasudeva; devam—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; kaàsa-cäëüra-mardanam—who defeated Kaàsa and

Canura; devaké-paramänandam—who gave bliss to Devaké; kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; vande—I offer my respectful

obeisances; jagad-gurum—tbe master of the universes.

Çré Närada said: I offer my respectful obiesances to Çré

Kåñëa, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of

the universes, the crusher of Kaàsa and Cäëüra, the son of

Vasudeva, and the bliss of Devaké.

çré-bahuläçva uväca

mathuräyäà kià caritraà

kåtavän bhagavän mune

kathaà jaghäna kaàsäkhyaà

etan me brühi tattvataù

çré-bahuläçva uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said; mathuräyäm—in

Mathurä; kim—what?; caritram—pastimes;

kåtavän—did; bhagavän—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; mune—O sage; katham—how?;

jaghäna—killed; kaàsäkhyam—Kaàsa; etan—this;

me—to me; brühi—please tell; tattvataù—in truth.

Çré Bahuläçva said: O sage, what pastimes did the Supreme

Personality of Godhead enjoy in Mathurä? How did He kill Kaàsa?

Please tell me this in truth.

Text 3

çré-närada uväca

athaikadähaà mathuräà puréà paräà

vilokituà cägatavän nåpeçvara

kartuà paraà daitya-vadhodyamaà hareù

parasya säkñän manasä praëoditaù

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; atha—then;

ekadä—one day; aham—I; mathuräm purém—to Mathurä

City; paräm—great; vilokitum—to see;

ca—and; ägatavän—went; nåpeçvara—O king of kings; kartum—to do; param—great; daitya-

vadhodyamam—killing of demons; hareù—of Lord Kåñëa;

parasya—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

säkñän—directly; manasä—with a mind; praëoditaù—sent.

Çré Närada said: O king of kings, one day, inspired by Lord

Kåñëa in my heart, I went to Mathurä City both to see it and to

arrange for Lord Kåñëa's pastime of killing many demons.

Text 4

siàhäsane ca prahåte purandarät

sitätapatre cala-cäru-cämare

sthitaà nåpaà kaàsam uraìga-duùsahaà

prävocam evaà çåëu tat-prapüjitaù

siàhäsane—on a throne; ca—and; prahåte—taken; purandarät—from Indra; sitätapatre—with a white

parasol; cala—moving; cäru—beautiful;

cämare—camaras; sthitam—situated; nåpam—the king; kaàsam—Kaàsa; uraìga—as a serpent;

duùsaham—venemous; prävocam—I spoke; evam—thus;

çåëu—please hear; tat-prapüjitaù—worshiped by him.

After he had worshiped me, and as, fanned with beautiful

cämaras, he sat on a white-parasol throne stolen from Indra, I

spoke to Kaàsa, who was poisonous like a snake. Please hear what

I said.

Text 5

yasodäyäù sutä jätä

yä tvad-dhastäd divaà gatä

devakyäà kåñëa utpanno

rohiëé-nandano balaù

yasodäyäù—of Yaçodä; sutä—the daughter;

jätä—born; yä—who; tvad-dhastät—by your hand;

divam—to heaven; gatä—gone; devakyäm—in Devaké;

kåñëa—Kåñëa; utpannaù—born; rohiëé-nandanaù—Rohiëé's

son; balaù—Balaräma.

The girl who fled to heaven from your hand was actually the

daughter of Yaçodä. Devaké actually had a son: Kåñëa, and Rohiëé

also had a son: Balaräma.

Text 6

sva-mitre nanda-räje ca

nyastau putrau bhavad-bhayät

taväré räma-kåñëau dvau

vasudevena daitya-räö

sva-mitre—with his friend; nanda-räje—King Nanda; ca—and; nyastau—placing; putrau—the two sons; bhavat—of you; bhayät—from fear; tava—of you; aré—the two enemies; räma—Balaräma; kåñëau—and

Kåñëa; dvau—both; vasudevena—by King Vasudeva;

daitya-räö—O king of the demons.

O king of the demons, afraid of what you might do to them,

Vasudeva placed his sons, Kåñëa and Balaräma, who are your

enemies, under the care of his friend Nanda Mahäräja.

Text 7

pütanädyä hy ariñöäntä

daityä ye tvad-balotkaöäù

yäbhyäà hatä vanoddeçe

te måtyü tau småtau kila

pütanädyä—beginning weith Putana; hy—indeed;

ariñöäntä—ending with Arista; daityä—demons;

ye—who; tvat—of you; balotkaöäù—having great

strength; yäbhyäm—by whom; hatä—killed;

vanoddeçe—in the forest; te—they; måtyü—deaths;

tau—They; småtau—considered; kila—indeed.

In the forest these two boys killed the host of very

powerful demons, beginning with Pütanä and ending with Ariñta,

that you sent there. Those two boys are like death personified.

Text 8

evam ukto bhoja-patiù

krodhäc calita-vigrahaù

jagräha niçitäà khaògaà

çaurià hantuà sabhä-tale

evam—thus; uktaù—addressed; bhoja-patiù—the king

of the Bhojas; krodhäc—angrily; calita-vigrahaù—his

body trembling; jagräha—grabbed; niçitäm—a sharp; khaògam—sword; çaurim—Vasudweva; hantum—to

kill; sabhä-tale—in the assembly.

When he heard these words, Kaàsa trembled with anger. He

grabbed a sharp sword to kill Vasudeva in the royal assembly.

Text 9

mayä niväritaù so 'pi

viståtair nigaòair dåòhaiù

baddhvä taà bhäryayä särdhaà

kärägäre rurodha ha

mayä—by me; niväritaù—forbidden; saù—he;

api—also; viståtaiù—with great; nigaòaiù—chains; dåòhaiù—firm; baddhvä—binding; tam—him;

bhäryayä—with his wife; särdham—with; kärägäre—into a

prison cell; rurodha—locked up; ha—indeed.

When I forbade him to do that, with great chains he tightly

bound Vasudeva and his wife, and locked them in a prison cell.

Text 10

ity uktvä taà mayi gate

keçinaà daitya-puìgavam

räma-kåñëa-vadhärthäya

preñayäm äsa daitya-räö

ity—thus; uktvä—speaking; tam—to him;

mayi—in me; gate—gone; keçinam—toKesi; daitya-

puìgavam—the best of demons; räma-kåñëa—Kåñëa and

Balaräma; vadhärthäya—to kill; preñayäm äsa—sent; daitya-räö—the king of demons.

I spoke to Kaàsa and then I left. When I was gone Kaàsa sent

the great demon Kesé to kill Kåñëa and Balaräma.

Text 11

cäëürädén samähüya

mahä-mätraà dvipasya ca

kärya-bhära-karäl lokän

prähedaà bhoja-räò balé

cäëürädén—headed by Canmura; samähüya—calling;

mahä-mätram—the elephant trainer; dvipasya—of the

elephant; ca—and; kärya-bhära-karän—servants;

lokän—people; präha—said; idam—this; bhoja-

räò—Kaàsa; balé—powerful Kaàsa.

Calling together his many servants, headed by Cäëüra and his

elephant-trainer, Kaàsa spoke to them the following words.

kaàsa uväca

he küöa he toçalaka

he cäëüra mahä-bala

räma-kåñëau ca me måtyü

darçitau näradena tu

kaàsa—Kaàsa; uväca—said; he—O;

küöa—Kuta; he—O; toçalaka—Tosala; he—O;

cäëüra—Canura; mahä-bala—very powerful;

räma—Balaräma; kåñëau—and Kåñëa; ca—and;

me—my; måtyü—death; darçitau—revealed;

näradena—by Närada; tu—indeed.

Kaàsa said: O Küöa, O Toçala, O powerful Cäëüra, Närada Muni

has reveled to me that Kåñëa and Balaräma are destined to kill

me.

Text 13

bhavadbhir iha sampräptau

hanyetäà malla-lélayä

malla-bhümià ca samyuktaà

kurutäçu çubhävahäm

bhavadbhiù—by you; iha—here;

sampräptau—attained; hanyetäm—should be killed;

malla-lélayä—in wrestling games; malla-bhümim—the wrestling

arena; ca—and; samyuktam—with; kuruta—should

do; äçu—at once; çubhävahäm—auspicious.

When They come here you should kill Them in the wrestling

games. In this way you will bring auspiciousness to our wrestling

arena.

Text 14

dvipaà kuvalayäpéòaà

raìga-dväri madotkaöam

prasthäpya tena hantavyau

mahä-mätra mahähitau

dvipam—the elephant; kuvalayäpéòam—Kuvalayapida;

raìga-dväri—at the gate; madotkaöam—maddened;

prasthäpya—placing; tena—by it; hantavyau—will be

killed; mahä-mätra—O elephant trainer; mahähitau—my

two enemies.

O elephant-trainer, placed the enraged elephant Kuvalayäpéòa

at the gateway and it will kill my two enemies.

Text 15

caturdaçyäà tu kartavyo

dhanur-yägaù praçäntaye

amäväsya-dine lokä

malla-yuddhaà bhaved iha

caturdaçyäm—on Caturdasi; tu—indeed;

kartavyaù—will be; dhanur-yägaù—the Dhanur-yajna;

praçäntaye—to pacify; amäväsya-dine—on the new-moon day; lokä—O people; malla-yuddham—wrestling match;

bhavet—will be; iha—here.

O people, to ensure that there is peace in our land, on the

fourteenth day of the moon we will celebrate a Dhanur-yajïa ritual. Then, on the new-moon day we will celebrate a

festival of wrestling matches.

Text 16

çré-närada uväca

ity uktvä sva-janän kaàso

'krüram ähüya sa-tvaram

rahasi präha räjendra

mantraà mantri-jana-priyam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; ity—thus;

uktvä—speaking; sva-janän—to his people;

kaàsaù—Kaàsa; akrüram—Akrüra; ähüya—calling;

sa-tvaram—at once; rahasi—in private; präha—said; räjendra—O king of kings; mantram—advice; mantri-

jana-priyam—dear to the counselors.

Çré Närada said: O king of kings, after speaking these words

to his people, Kaàsa called for Akrüra and in private gave the

following counsel, a counsel that 168pleased Akrüra, the

wisest of counselors.

Text 17

kaàsa uväca

bho bho däna-pate mantrin

chånu me paramaà vacaù

gaccha nanda-vrajaà prätaù

kuru käryaà mahä-mate

kaàsa uväca—Kaàsa said; bhaù—O; bhaù—O;

däna-pate—best of the generous persons; mantrin—O

counselor; chånu—please hear; me—of me;

paramam—great; vacaù—words; gaccha—go; nanda-

vrajam—to Nanda's Vraja; prätaù—in the morning;

kuru—do; käryam—duty; mahä-mate—O noble-hearted one.

Kaàsa said: O counselor, O best of the generous, please hear

my noble words. In the morning you should go to Nanda's Vraja. O

noble-hearted one, then you should execute the mission I give to

you.

Text 18

äsäte tatra me çatrü

vasudeva-sutau kila

darçitau näradenäpi

deva-devarñiëa bhåçäm

äsäte—arrived; tatra—there; me—my;

çatrü—two enemies; vasudeva-sutau—the two sons of

Vasudeva; kila—indeed; darçitau—revealed;

näradena—By Närada; api—also; deva-devarñiëa—the sage

of the demigods; bhåçäm—greatly.

My two enemies, the sons of Vasudeva, have gone there.

Devarñi Närada revealed that to me.

Text 19

sopäyanair gopa-gaëair

nanda-räjädibhiù saha

mathurä-darçana-miñäd

rathenänaya mäà ciram

sa-upäyanaiù—with giftsd; gopa-gaëaiù—with the

gopas; nanda-räjädibhiù—hgeaded by King Nanda;

saha—with; mathurä-darçana-miñät—on the pretext of seeing

Mathurä; rathena—by chariot; änaya—vring;

mäm—to me; ciram—at once.

One pretext of bringing Them to see Mathurä City bring,

accompanied by King Nanda and the gopas bearing gifts, the two of

Them to me at once.

Text 20

dvipena vä mahä-mallair

ghätayiñyämi tau çiçü

tat-paçcän nanda-räjaà ca

vasudeva-sahäyakam

dvipena—with the elephant; vä—or; mahä-mallaiù—by

the great wretslers; ghätayiñyämi—I will kill;

tau—Them; çiçü—the boys; tat-paçcän—after that;

nanda-räjam—King Nanda; ca—and; vasudeva-

sahäyakam—Vasudeva's friend.

I will have the two boys killed, either by the elephant

Kuvalayäpéòa, or by the great wrestlers, and then I will kill

Vasudeva's friend Nanda Mahäräja.

Text 21

våñabhänu-varaà paçcän

nava-nandopanandakän

paçcac chaurià haniñyämi

devakaà tat-sahäyakam

våñabhänu-varam—Våñabhänu; paçcän—then; nava-

nandopanandakän—the nine Nandas and Upanandas;

paçcac—then; chaurim—Vasudeva; haniñyämi—I will

kill; devakam—Devaka; tat-sahäyakam—his friend.

Then I will kill King Våñabhänu, and then the nine Nandas

and Upanandas, and then Vasudeva, and then Vasudeva's friend

Devaka.

Text 22

ugrasenaà ca pitaraà

våddhaà räjya-samutsukam

tat-paçcäd yädavän sarvän

haniñyämi na saàçayaù

ugrasenam—Ugrasenba; ca—and; pitaram—father; våddham—old; räjya-samutsukam—still eager to rule his

kingdom; tat-paçcät—after that; yädavän—the

Yadavas; sarvän—all; haniñyämi—I will jkill;

na—no; saàçayaù—doubt.

Then I will kill my old father, who still yearns to rule his

kingdom, and then I will kill all the Yädavas. Of this there is

no doubt.

Text 23

ete deva-gaëäù sarve

jätä mantrin mahé-tale

çakunir me mahä-mitro

balé candravaté-patiù

ete—the; deva-gaëäù—demigods; sarve—all;

jätä—born; mantrin—O counselor; mahé-tale—on the

earth; çakuniù— me mahä-mitro balé candravaté-patiù

O counselor, all the demigods are now born on the earth.

Still, Çakuni, the powerful king of Canrävaté, is my great

friend.

Text 24

bhüta-santäpano håñöo

våkaù çambara eva ca

kälanäbho mahänäbho

hariçmaçrus tathaiva ca

bhütasantäpanaù—Bhütasantäpana; håñöaù—Håñöa;

våkaù—Våka; çambara—Çambara; eva—indeed;

ca—and; kälanäbhaù——Kälanäbha;

mahänäbhaù—Mahänäbho; hariçmaçruù—Hariçmaçru;

tathä—so; eva—indeed; ca—and.

Bhütasantäpana, Håñöa, Våka, Çambara, Kälanäbha, Mahänäbha,

and Hariçmaçru are also my friends.

Text 25

ete miträëi me santi

mad-arthaà präëadä balät

çvaçuro 'pi jaräsandho

dviviòo me sakhä småtaù

ete—they; miträëi—friends; me—my;

santi—are; mad-artham—for my sake; präëadä—giving

their lives; balät—forcibly; çvaçuraù—father-in-

law; api—even; jaräsandhaù—Jaräsandha;

dviviòaù—Dviviòo; me—my; sakhä—friend; småtaù—is

considered.

They are all my friends. They would give up their lives for

my sake. Jaräsandha is my father-in-law. Dviviòa is also my

friend.

Text 26

bäëäsuraç ca narako

mayy eva kåta-sauhådaù

ete sarväà mahéà jitvä

baddhvä devän sa-väsavän

bäëäsuraù—Bäëäsura; ca—and; narakaù—Naraka; mayy—in me; eva—indeed; kåta-sauhådaù—become

friends; ete—theye; sarväm—all; mahém—the

earth; jitvä—conquering; baddhvä—binding;

devän—the demigods; sa-väsavän—with Indra.

Bäëäsura and Narakäsura are also my friends. My friends will

counquer all the worlds. They will put Indra and the demigods in

chains.

Text 27

kñiptvä meru-guha-durge

kuveraà dravya-näyakam

trailokya-räjyaà tu sadä

kariñyanti na saàçayaù

kñiptvä—throwing; meru-guha-durge—in a fortress-cave in

Mount Meru; kuveram—Kuvera; dravya-näyakam—the

treasurer; trailokya—of the three worlds; räjyam—the

kingdom; tu—indeed; sadä—always;

kariñyanti—will do; na—no; saàçayaù—doubt.

They will imprison the heavenly treasurer Kuvera in a cave

on Mount Meru. They will rule the three worlds. Of this there is

no doubt.

Text 28

kavénäà tvaà kavir iva

giräà giñpati-vad bhuvi

etat käryaà ca kartavyaà

tvayä däna-pate tvaram

kavénäm—of wise men; tvam—you; kaviù—the

wisest; iva—as if; giräm—of words; giñpati-

vat—like Båhaspati; bhuvi—on the earth; etat—this; käryam—mission; ca—and; kartavyam—should be

done; tvayä—by you; däna-pate—O generous one;

tvaram—at once.

You are the wisest of wise men. In this world you are

eloquent like Båhaspati. O generous one, please execute this

mission at once.

Text 29

çré-akrüra uväca

tvayä kåto yadu-pate

manoratha-mahärëavaù

daivecchayäyaà bhavati

goñpadaà tad vinärëavaù

çré-akrüra uväca—Çré Akrüra said; tvayä—by you;

kåtaù—done; yadu-pate—O king of the Yadavas;

manoratha-mahärëavaù—a great ocean of desires; daiva—of

destiny; icchayä—by the desire; ayam—this;

bhavati—is; goñpadam—a cow's hoofprint; tat—that; vinä—without; arëavaù—an ocean.

Çré Akrüra said: O king of the Yädavas, you have a great

ocean of desires. If destiny wishes, you will cross that ocean as

one crosses a the puddle in a cow's hoofprint. If destiny does

not wish, your desires will remain an impassable ocean.

Text 30

kaàsa uväca

visåjya daivaà kurute baliñöho

daivaà samäçritya hi nirbalaç ca

kälätmanor nitya-gayo prabhävän

niräkulas tiñöhatu karma-yogé

kaàsa uväca—Kaàsa said; visåjya—rejecting;

daivam—destiny; kurute—does; baliñöhaù—a strong

man; daivam—destiny; samäçritya—takign shelter; hi—indeed; nirbalaç—the weak; ca—and; käla—of

time; ätmanoù—and the Supersoul; nitya-gayaù—always

going; prabhävän—by the power; niräkulaù—free from

troubles; tiñöhatu—stands; karma-yogé—a karma-yogi.

Kaàsa said: A strong man rejects destiny. He makes his own

destiny. Only the weak lean on destiny. Protected by the power of

his own work, a strong man is never troubled by eternal time and

the eternal Supersoul.

Text 31

çré-närada uväca

evam uktvä mantri-varaà

samutthäya sabhä-sthalät

kiïcit prakupitaù kaàsaù

çanair antaù-puraà yayau

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; evam—thus;

uktvä—saying; mantri-varam—to the great counselor;

samutthäya—rising; sabhä-sthalät—from the assembly;

kiïcit—somewhat; prakupitaù—angry;

kaàsaù—Kaàsa; çanaiù—slowly; antaù-puram—to the inner

part of the palace; yayau—went.

Çré Närada said: After speaking these words to his

counselor, agitated Kaàsa stood up, left the room, and slowly

walked to the inner rooms of the palace.
