çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; nanda—of Nanda; upananda—and Upananda; bhavane—in the home; çrédämä—Çrédämä; subalaù—Subala; sakhä—friends; stoka-kåñëaù—Stoka-kåñëa; arjunaù—Arjuna; aàçaù—partial expansions; ca—also; nava—new; nanda—of Nanda; gåhe—in the home; vidhe—O Brahmä.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My friends Çrédämä and Subala will take birth in the homes of Nanda and Upananda.

Stoka-kåñëa, Arjuna, and Aàçu will take birth in the nine homes of Nanda's relatives.

viçälaåñabha-tejasvi—Viçäla, Åñabha, and Tejasvé; devaprastha-varüthapäù—Devaprastha and Varüthapa; bhaviñyanti—will be; sakhäyaù—friends; me—My; vraje—in Vraja; ñaò—six; våñabhänuñu—in the homes of the relatives of King Våñabhänu.


My friends Viçäla, Åñabha, Tejasvé, Devaprastha, and Varüthapa will take birth among the six relatives of King Våñabhänu.

çré-brahmä uväca—Çré Brahmä said; kasya—of whom?; vai—indeed; nanda—of Nanda; padavé—path; kasya—of whom?; vai—indeed; våñabhänutä—of King Våñabhänu; vada—tell; deva—of the demigods; pate—O lord; säkñät—directly; upanandasya—of Upananda; lakñaëam—the characteristics.


Çré Brahmä said: Who is Nanda? Who is Våñabhänu? O master of the demigods, please describe the nature of Upananda.

gäù pälayanti ghoñeñu
sadä go-våttayo 'niçam
te gopälä mayä proktäs
teñäà tvaà lakñaëaà çåëu


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; gäù—cows; pälayanti—protect; ghoñeñu—in the homes of the cowherds; sadä—always; gaù—for the cows; våttayaù—activities; aniçam—day and night; te—they; gopäläù—protectors of the cows; mayä—by Me; proktäù—said; teñäm—of them; tvam—you; lakñaëam—characteristics; çåëu—please hear.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: They are cowherd people. Day and night they protect the cows in the villages of cowherds. Listen and I will describe them.

nava-lakña-gaväà patiù
upanandaç ca kathitaù
païca-lakña-gaväà patiù


nandaù—Nanda; proktaù—said; sa-gopälaiù—with the gopas; nava-lakña—900,000; gaväm—of cows; patiù—the master; upanandaù—Upananda; ca—also; kathitaù—said; païca-lakña—500,000; gaväm—of cows; patiù—the master.


The gopas say that Nanda is the master of 900,000 cows and Upananda is the master of 500,000 cows.

våñabhänuù sa ukto yo
daça-lakña-gaväà patiù
gaväà koöir gåhe yasya
nanda-räjaù sa eva hi


våñabhänuù—Våñabhänu; saù—he; uktaù—said; yaù—who; daça-lakña—one million; gaväm—of cows; patiù—the master; gaväm—of cows; koöiù—ten million; gåhe—in the home; yasya—of whom; nanda-räjaù—King Nanda; saù—he; eva—certainly; hi—indeed.


They say that Våñabhänu is the master of a million cows and at King Nanda's home are ten million cows.

koöy-ardhaà ca gaväà yasya
våñabhänu-varas tu saù
etädåçau vraje dvau tu
sucandro droëa eva hi


koöi-ardham—five million; ca—and; gaväm—of cows; yasya—of whom; våñabhänu-varaù—Våñabhänu; tu—indeed; saù—he; etädåçau—like this; vraje—in Vraja; dvau—two; tu—indeed; sucandraù—Sucandra; droëaù—Droëa; eva—indeed; hi—certainly.


Våñabhänuvara has five million cows, and Sucandra and Droëa in Vraja each have that number.

sarva-lakñaëa-lakñyäòhyau
gopa-räjau bhaviñyataù
çata-candränanänäà ca
sundaréëäà su-väsasäm
gopénäà mad-vraje ramye
çata-yütho bhaviñyati


sarva-lakñaëa-lakñya-aòhyau—opulent with all virtues; gopa-räjau—two gopa kings; bhaviñyataù—will be; çata—hundred; candra—moons; änanänäm—whose faces; ca—also; sundaréëäm—of beautiful girls; su-väsasäm—beautifully dressed; gopénäm—gopés; mat—My; vraje—in Vraja; ramye—beautiful; çata—hundreds; yüthaù—groups; bhaviñyati—will be.


These two gopa kings will be rich with all virtues. In My Vraja will also be hundreds of groups of beautiful, beautifully dressed gopés, their faces like hundreds of moons.

yüthasya lakñaëaà sarvaà

çré-brahmä uväca—Çré Brahmä said; he—O; déna—of the poor; bandhaù—friend; he—O; deva—Lord; jagat—of the universes; käraëa—of the causes; käraëa—the cause; yüthasya—of the groups; lakñaëam—characteristic; sarvaà—all; tat—that; me—to me; brühi—please speak; para-éçvara—O Supreme Lord.


Çré Brahmä said: O friend of the poor, O Lord, O cause of the universes' causes, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, please completely describe these groups (of gopés).

çré-bhagavän uväca
arbudaà daça-koöénäà
munibhiù kathitaà vidhe
daçärbudaà yatra bhavet
so 'pi yüthaù prakathyate


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; arbudam—a hundred million; daça—ten; koöénäà—ten million; munibhiù—by sages; kathitam—said; vidhe—O Brahmä; daça—ten; arbudam—a hundred million; yatra—where; bhavet—may be; saù—that; api—also; yüthaù—group; prakathyate—is said.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Brahmä, the sages say that the number one hundred million is called one arbuda. In each group there are ten arbudas (one million).

goloka—of Goloka; väsinyaù—the residents; kaçcit—some; käçcit—some; vai—indeed; dvära-pälikäù—doorkeepers; çåìgära-prakaräù—decorators; käçcit—some; käçcit—some; käçcit—some; çayyä-upakärakäù—arranging the bed.


Some of the gopés who live in Gokula are doorkeepers, some decorate (the divine couple), and some prepare the (divine couple's) bed.

govardhana-niväsinyaù
käçcit kuïja-vidhäyikäù


pärñadä—associates; äkhyäù—named; tathä—so; käçcit—some; çré-våndävana—of Våndävana; pälikäù—the protectors; govardhana—by Govardhana Hill; niväsinyaù—residing; käçcit—some; kuïja—in the forest groves; vidhäyikäù—arranging.


Some of these gopé associates of the Lord protect the forest of Våndävana, some reside by Govardhana Hill, and some decorate the forest groves.

bhaviñyanti vraje mama

jähnavé-yütha eva ca


me—of Me; nikuïja—in the forest groves; niväsinyaù—residing; bhaviñyanti—will be; vraje—in Vraja; mama—My; evam—thus; ca—also; yamunä—of the Yamunä; yüthaù—the
group; jähnavé—of the Ganges; yüthaù—the group; eva—certainly; ca—also.


Some will reside in the forests of My Vraja. Some will reside by the Yamunä and some by the Ganges.

ramäyä madhu-mädhavyä
virajäyäs tathaiva ca
lalitäyä viçäkhäyä
mäyä-yütho bhaviñyati


ramäyäù—of Ramä; madhu-mädhavyäù—of Madhu-Mädhavé; virajäyäù—of Virajä; tathä—so; eva—indeed; ca—and;lalitäyäù—of Lalitä; viçäkhäyäù—of Viçäkhä; mäyä-yüthaù—group; bhaviñyati—will be.


Ramä, Madhu-Mädhavé, Virajä, Lalitä, and Viçäkhä will each lead a group.

sakhénäà kila ñoòaça
dvatriàçac ca sakhénäà tu
yüthä bhävyä vraje vidhe


etäù—they; hi—indeed; añöa—eight; sakhénäà—of friends; ca—also; sakhénäm—of friends; kila—certainly; ñoòaça—sixteen; dvatriàçat—32; ca—and; sakhénäm—of friends; tu—indeed; yüthäù—groups; bhävyäù—will be; vraje—in Vraja; vidhe—O Brahmä.


O Brahma, in Vraja there will be groups led by eight gopé friends, by sixteen gopé friends, and by thirty-two gopé friends.

çruti-rüpä åñi-rüpä
maithiläù kauçaläs tathä
ayodhyä-pura-väsinyo
yajïa-sétäù pulindakäù


çruti—of the Vedas; rüpäù—forms; åñi—of the sages; rüpäù—forms; maithiläù—of the women of Mithilä; kauçaläù—the people of Koñalä; tathä—so; ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù—the women of Ayodhyä; yajïa-sétäù—the Yajïa Sétäs; pulindakäù—the Pulindä girls.


Some of the gopés to be had been Personified Vedas, some great sages, some women in Mithilä, some women in Koñalä, some women in Ayodhyä, some yajï-sétäs, and some Pulindä girls.

yäsäà mayä varo datto
pürve pürve yuge yuge
täsäà yüthä bhaviñyanti
gopénäà mad-vraje çubhe


yäsäm—to whom; mayä—by Me; varaù—benediction; dattaù—given; pürve—before; pürve—before; yuge yuge—in different yugas; täsäm—of them; yüthäù—groups; bhaviñyanti—will be; gopénäm—of gopés; mat—My; vraje—in Vraja; çubhe—beautiful.


In previous millennia having received a benediction from Me, they will become various groups of gopés in My beautiful Vraja.

etäù kathaà vraje bhävyäù
kena püëyena kair varaiù
durlabhaà hi padaà tad vai
yogibhiù puruñottama


çré-brahmä uväca—Çré Brahmä said; etäù—they; katham—how; vraje—in Vraja; bhävyäù—will be; kena—by what?; püëyena—pious deed; kaiù—by what?; varaiù—benedictions; durlabham—difficult to attain; hi—indeed; padam—state; tat—that; vai—certainly; yogibhiù—by yogés; puruñottama—O Supreme Personality of Godhead.


Çré Brahmä said: How will they become (gopés) in Vraja? O Supreme Personality of Godhead, because of what pious deed or what benedictions will they attain this position even the great yogés cannot attain?

çvetadvépe ca bhümänaà
çrutayas tuñöuvuù param
uñatébhir giräbhiç ca
prasanno 'bhüt sahasra-pät


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; çvetadvépe—in Çvetadvépa; ca—also; bhümänam—the Lord; çrutayaù—the personified Vedas; tuñöuvuù—offered prayers; param—greatly; uñatébhiù—beautiful; giräbhiù—with words; ca—also; prasannaù—pleased; abhüt—became; sahasra-pät—the universal form, who has a thousand feet.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: When in Çvetadvépa the personififed Vedas offered prayers to Him with eloquent words, the Lord's form who has thousands of feet became pleased.

varaà våëéta yüyaà vai
yan mano-väïchitaà mahat
yeñäà prasanno 'haà säkñät
teñäà kià durlabhaà bhuvi


çré-hariù uväca—Çré Hari said; varam—a benediction; våëéta—choose; yüyam—you; vai—certainly; yat—what; manaù—by the heart; väïchitam—is desired; mahat—great; yeñäm—by whom; prasannaù—pleased; aham—I am; säkñät—directly; teñäm—of them; kim—what?; durlabham—difficult to attain; bhuvi—on the earth.


Çré Hari said: Choose a benediction, whatever your heart desires. What is difficult to attain for they with whom I am pleased?

väì-mano-gocarätétaà
tato na jïäyate tu tat
änanda-mätram iti yad
vandantéha pura-vidaù
tad rüpaà darçayäsmäkaà
yadi deyo varo hi naù


çré-çrutayaù ücuù—the personified Vedas said; väk—words; manaù—and mind; gocara—the range; atétam—beyond; tataù—therefore; na—not; jïäyate—known; tu—indeed; tat—that; änanda—bliss; mätram—only; iti—thus; yat—what; vandanti—they say; iha—here; pura-vidaù—the cholars of the Puräëas; tat—that; rüpam—form; darçaya—please show; asmäkam—to us; yadi—if; deyaù—to be given; varaù—a benediction; hi—indeed; naù—to us.


The personified Vedas said: Because You are beyond the material mind and material words, we cannot perfectly understand You. If You wish to give us a benediction, then please directly show us Your transcendental form, which the scholars of the Puräëas say is full of bliss.

çrutvaitad darçayäm äsa
svaà lokaà prakåteù param
kevalänubhavänanda-
mätram akñaram avyayam


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; çrutvä—having heard; etat—this; darçayäm äsa—He showed; svam—His own; lokam—realm; prakåteù—the material world; param—beyond; kevala—only; anubhava—experience; änanda—bliss; mätram—only; akñaram—changeless; avyayam—indestructible.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Hearing this, the Lord showed them His own abode, where there is only bliss and there are neither decay nor death, . . .

yatra våndävanaà näma
vanaà käma-dughair drumaiù
manorama-nikuïjäòhyaà
sarvartu-sukha-samyutam


yatra—where; våndävanam—Våndävana; näma—named; vanaàforest; käma-dughaiù—fulfilling desires; drumaiù—with trees; manorama—beautiful; nikuïja—with forest groves; aòhyam—opulent; sarva—in all; åtu—seasons; sukha-samyutam—with happiness.


. . . where there is the forest named Våndävana, which is opulent with beautiful forests of trees that fulfill all desires, and which brings happiness in every season, . . .

yatra govardhano näma
su-nirjhara-daré-yutaù
ratna-dhätu-mayaù çrémän
su-pakñi-gaëa-saìkulaù


yatra—where; govardhanaù—Govardhana; näma—named; su-nirjhara—with beautiful streams; daré—and caves; yutaù—endowed; ratna—jewels; dhätu—and minerals; mayaù—consisting; çrémät—beautiful; su-pakñi-gaëa-saìkulaù—filled with beautiful birds.


. . . where there is the hill named Govardhana, which has beautiful caves and swiftly-moving streams, which is made of jewels and precious minerals, and which is filled with graceful birds, . . .

yatra nirmala-pänéyä
kälindé saritäà varä
ratna-baddhobhaya-taöé
haàsa-padmädi-saìkulä


yatra—where; nirmala—pure; pänéyä—water; kälindé—Yamunä; saritäm—of streams; varä—the best; ratna—with jewels; baddha—studded; ubhaya—both; taöé—banks; haàsa—with swans; padma—and lotuses; ädi—beginning; saìkulä—filled.


. . . where there is the Yamunä, which is the best of rivers, which has pure and delicious water, which is filled with lotuses, swans, and other flowers and birds, and which has shores made of precious jewels, . . .

nänä-räsa-rasonmattaà
yatra gopé-kadambakam
tat-kadambaka-madhya-sthaù
kiçoräkåtir acyutaù


nänä—various; räsa—of räsa dances; rasa—by the nectar; unmattam—intoxicated; yatra—where; gopé—of gopés; kadambakam—the multitude; tat-kadambaka—of that multitude; madhya—in the middle; sthaù—standing; kiçora—youthful; äkåtiù—form; acyutaù—the infallible Lord.


. . . and where the infallible Lord, whose form is that of a youth, stood among many gopés intoxicated by tasting the nectar of many räsa dances.

darçayitveti ca präha
bruta kià karaväëi vaù
dåööo madéyo loko 'yam
yato nästi paraà varam


darçayitvä—having seen; iti—thus; ca—also; präha—said; bruta—please tell; kim—what?; karaväëi—shall I do; vaù—of you; dåööaù—seen; madéyaù—My; lokaù—realm; ayam—which; yataù—than which; na—not; asti—is; param—better; varam—benediction.


Having revealed this, the Lord said: What more shall I do for you? Tell Me. You have seen My realm. There is no benediction better than (seeing it).

çré-çrutaya ücuù
kandarpa-koöi-lävaëye
tvayi dåööe manäàsi naù
käminé-bhävam äsadya
smara-kñubdhäny asaàçayam


çré-çrutayaù ücuù—the personified Vedas said; kandarpa—of Kämadevas; koöi—millions; lävaëye—handsomeness; tvayi—when You; dåööe—are seen; manäàsi—hearts; naù—our; käminé—of beautiful and amorous girls; bhävam—the nature; äsadya—attaining; smara—by amorous desires; kñubdhäni—agitated; asaàçayam—without doubt.


When we see You in this way, more handsome than millions of Kämadevas, our hearts become troubled with amorous desires and we yearn to become beautiful girls. Of this there is no doubt.

yathä goloka-väsinyaù
käminétvena gopikäù
bhajanti ramaëaà matvä
cikérñäjani nas tathä


yathä—as; goloka-väsinyaù—the girls of Goloka; käminétvena—with the status of being beautiful girls; gopikäù—gopés bhajanti—worship; ramaëam—a lover; matvä—considering; cikérñä—desire; ajani—is born; naù—of us; tathä—so.


We yearn to become beautiful gopés in Goloka who worship You as their lover.

çré-harir uväca
durlabho durghaöaç caiva
yuñmäkaà su-manorathaù
mayänumoditäù samyak
satyo bhavitum arhati


çré-hariù uväca—Çré Hari said; durlabhaù—difficult to attain; durghaöaù—impossible; ca—and; eva—indeed; yuñmäkam—your; su—beautiful; manorathaù—desire; mayä—by Me; anumoditäù—allowed; samyak—completely; satyaù—true; bhavitum—to be; arhati—is worthy.


Çré Hari said: Although your glorious desire is impossible and can never be attained, I will grant it. It will become true.

ägamini viriïcau tu
jäte såööy-artham udyate
kalpa-särasvataà präpya
vraje gopyo bhaviñyatha


ägamini—come; viriïcau—when Brahmä; tu—indeed; jäte—is born; såööi—creation; artham—for the purpose; udyate—is manifested; kalpa-särasvatam—the Särasvata-kalpa; präpya—attaining; vraje—in Vraja; gopyaù—gopés; bhaviñyatha—you will become.


When a new Brahmä is born to create (the universe), and the time of Särasvata-kalpa arrives, you will become gopés in Vraja.

påthivyäà bhärate kñetre
mäthure mama maëòale
våndävane bhaviñyämi
preyän vo rasa-maëòale


påthivyäm—on the earth; bhärate—in Bhärata-varña; kñetre—in the place; mäthure—in the district of Mathurä; mama—My; maëòale—circle; våndävane—in Våndävana; bhaviñyämi—I will become; preyän—the beloved; vaù—of you; rasa—of the räsa dance; maëòale—in the circle.


On the earth, in Bhärata-varña, in the circle of Mathurä, in Våndävana, in the räsa-dance circle, I will become your beloved.


Text 33


jära-dharmeëa su-snehaà
su-dåòhaà sarvato 'dhikam
mayi sampräpya sarvä hi
kåtäkåtyä bhaviñyatha


jära-dharmeëa—as a paramour; su-sneham—affection; su-dåòham—firm; sarvataù—than all; adhikam—greater; mayi—for Me; sampräpya—attaining; sarväù—all; hi—indeed; kåtäkåtyäù—usccessful; bhaviñyatha—you will become.


Passionately loving Me as your paramour, you will all become perfect.

çré-bhagavän uväca
täç ca gopyo bhaviñyanti
pürva-kalpa-varän mama
anyäsäà caiva gopénäà
lakñaëaà çåëu tad vidhe


çré-bhagavän uväca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; täù—they; ca—also; gopyaù—gopés; bhaviñyanti—will become; pürva—previous; kalpa—from the kalpa; varän—benedictions; mama—My; anyäsäm—of other; ca—also; eva—certainly; gopénäm—gopés; lakñaëam—characteristics; çåëu—please hear; tat—that; vidhe—O Brahmä.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Because of the previous kalpa's benediction they will become gopés. O Brahmä, now hear the description of the other gopés.

suräëäà rakñaëärthäya
räkñasänäà vadhäya ca
tretäyäà rämacandro 'bhüd
véro daçarathätmajaù


suräëäm—of the devotees; rakñaëärthäya—for protection; räkñasänäm—of the demons; vadhäya—for the killing; ca—also; tretäyäm—in Tretä-yuga; rämacandraù—Rämacandra; abhüt—was; véraù—hero; daçaratha—of Daçaratha; ätmajaù—the son.


To protect the devotees and kill the demons the Lord appeared in Tretä-yuga as Daçaratha's son, the hero Rämacandra.

sétä-svayamvaraà gatvä
dhanur-bhaìgaà cakära saù
uväha jänakéà sétäà
rämo räjéva-locanaù


sétä—of Sétä; svayamvaram—to the svayamvara; gatvä—having gone; dhanuù—of the bow; bhaìgam—breaking; cakära—did; saù—He; uväha—married; jänakém—Janaka's daughter; sétäm—Sétä; rämaù—Räma; räjéva—lotus; locanaù—eyed.


Lotus-eyed Räma went to Sétä's svayamvara, broke the bow, and married Janaka's daughter Sétä.

taà dåöövä maithiläù sarväù
purandhryo mumuhur vidhe
rahasy ücur mahätmänaà
bhartä no bhava he ragho


tam—Him; dåöövä—seeing; maithiläù—the women of Mithilä; sarväù—all; purandhryaù—married; mumuhuù—became agitated; vidhe—O Brahmä; rahasi—in a secluded place; ücuù—said; mahätmänam—to the Lord; bhartä—the husband; naù—of us; bhava—please become; he—O; raghaù—Raghu.


O Brahmä, when they saw Him, all the married women of Mithilä were overcome with desire. In a secluded place they all approached the Lord and said, "O descendent of Raghu, please become our husband."

tä äha räghavendraç ca
mä çocaà kuruta striyaù
dväparänte kariñyämi
bhavaténäà manoratham


täù—to them; äha—said; räghava—of the Räghava dynasty; indraù—the king; ca—also; mä—don't; çocam—lament; kuruta—do; striyaù—women; dväpara—of Dväpara-yuga; ante—at the end; kariñyämi—I will do; bhavaténäm—of you; manoratham—the desire.


Räma, the king of the Räghavas, said to them, "O women, don't be unhappy. At the end of Dväpara-yuga and I will fulfill your desire."

samäcarata tattvataù
çraddhayä parayä bhaktyä
vraje gopyo bhaviñyatha


tértham—pilgrimage; dänam—charity; tapaù—austerity; çaucam—cleanliness; samäcarata—perform; tattvataù—in truth; çraddhayä—with faith; parayä—with great; bhaktyä—devotion; vraje—in Vraja; gopyaù—gopés; bhaviñyatha—you will become.


With great faith and devotion honestly go on pilgrimages, give charity, perform austerities, and follow the rules of cleanliness. Then you will become gopés in Vraja.

tejasä jita-bhärgavaù


iti—thus; täbhyaù—to them; varam—benediction; datvä—giving; çré-rämaù—Çré Räma; karuëä—of mercy; nidhiù—an ocean; koñalän—to the country of the Koñalas; prayayau—went; dhanvé—with His bow; tejasä—with power; jita—conquered; bhärgavaù—Paraçuräma.


After giving them this benediction, Çré Räma, who is an ocean of mercy and an expert bowman, with His great prowess defeated Paraçuräma and then went to the country of the Koñalas.

märge ca kauñalä naryo
rämaà dåööväti-sundaram
manasä vavrire taà vai
patià kandarpa-mohanam


märge—on the road; ca—also; kauñaläù naryaù—the women of Koñala; rämam—Lord Räma; dåöövä—seeing; ati—very; sundaram—handsome; manasä—with their hearts; vavrire—chose; tam—Him; vai—indeed; patim—as their husband; kandarpa—than many
Kämadevas; mohanam—charming.


Seeing on the path very handsome Lord Räma, who is more charming than a host of Kämadevas, the women of Koñala in their hearts chose Him to be their husband.

manasäpi varaà rämo
dadau täbhyo hy açeña-vit
manorathaà kariñyämi
vraje gopyo bhaviñyatha


manasä—with the heart; api—also; varam—choice; rämaù—Räma; dadau—gave; täbhyaù—them; hi—indeed; açeña—all; vit—knowing; manoratham—desire; kariñyämi—I will do; vraje—in Vraja; gopyaù—gopés; bhaviñyatha—you will become.


In His heart all-knowing Räma gave them this benediction: "You will become gopés in Vraja, and then I will fulfill your desire."

ägataà sétayä särdhaà
sainyena raghu-nandanam
ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù
çrutvä drañöuà samäyayuù


ägatam—arrived; sétayä—Sétä; särdham—with; sainyena—army; raghu-nandanam—the joy of the Raghus; ayodhyä-pura-väsinyaù—the women of Ayodhyä; çrutvä—hearing; drañöum—to see; samäyayuù—came.


When He came with Sétä and with His army, the women of Ayodhyä went to see the joy of the Raghus.


Text 44


vékñya taà moham äpannä
mürchitäù prema-vihvaläù
tepus tapas täù säräyü-
tére räma-dhåta-vratäù


vékñya—seeing; tam—Him; moham—agitation; äpannäù—attained; mürchitäù—fainted; prema—with love; vihvaläù—overcome; tepus tapaù—they performed austerities; täù—they; säräyü—of the Saräyü river; tére—on the shore; räma-dhåta-vratäù—with a vow to attain Lord Räma.


Seeing Him, they become bewildered and fainted, overcome with love. With a vow to attain Lord Räma they performed austerities on the Saräyü's bank.


Text 45


äkäça-väg abhüt täsäà
dväparänte manorathaù
bhaviñyati na sandehaù
kälindé-téra-je vane


äkäça—from the sky; väk—a voice; abhüt—was; täsäm—of them; dväpara—of Dväpara-yuga; ante—at the end; manorathaù—desire; bhaviñyati—will be; na—no; sandehaù—doubt; kälindé—of the Yamunä; téra—on the bank; je—born; vane—in the forest.


A voice from the sky (said) to them, "At the end of Dväpara-yuga, in the forest by the Yamunä's shore, (your) desire will be fulfilled. Of this there is no doubt."

pitur väkyäd yadä rämo
daëòakäkhyaà vanaà gataù
cacära sétayä särdhaà
lakñmaëena dhanuñmatä


pituù—of His father; väkyät—by the statement; yadä—when; rämaù—Räma; daëòaka—Daëòaka; äkhyam—named; vanam—to the forest; gataù—gone; cacära—went; sétayä—Sétä; särdham—with; lakñmaëena—and Lakñmaëa; dhanuñmatä—the expert bowman.


Then, because of His father's words, He went with Sétä and the expert bowman Lakñmaëa to the Daëòaka forest.

gopälopäsakäù sarve
daëòakäraëya-väsinaù
dhyäyantaù satataà mäà vai
räsärthaà dhyäna-tat-paräù


gopäla—of Lord Gopäla; upäsakäù—worshipers; sarve—all; daëòakäraëya-väsinaù—the residents of the Daëòaka forest; dhyäyantaù—meditating; satatam—always; mäm—on Me; vai—indeed; räsa—the räsa dance; artham—for the purpose; dhyäna-tat-paräù—rapt in meditation.


All the sages in the Daëòaka forest were worshipers of Lord Gopäla. To attain the räsa dance they always meditated on Me.


Text 48


yeñäm äçramam äsadya
dhanur-bäëa-dharo yuvä
teñäà dhyäne gato rämo
jaöä-mukuöa-maëòitaù


yeñäm—of whom; äçramam—the hermitage; äsadya—attaining; dhanuù—bow; bäëa—and arrows; dharaù—holding; yuvä—young; teñäm—of them; dhyäne—in meditation; gataù—gone; rämaù—räma; jaöä-mukuöa-maëòitaù—decorated with matted locks of hair.


He came to their äçrama as a youth carrying bow and arrows. Then He appeared in their meditation as a sage with matted hair.

anyäkåtià te taà vékñya
paraà vismita-mänasäù
dhyänäd utthäya dadåçuù
koöi-kandarpa-sannibham


anya—another; äkåtim—form; te—they; tam—Him; vékñya—seeing; param—then; vismita—surprised; mänasäù—at heart; dhyänät—from meditation; utthäya—rising; dadåçuù—they saw; koöi—millions; kandarpa—of Kämadeva's; sannibham—like.


Surprised at heart by seeing this other form, they rose from their meditation and saw Lord Räma, who was like millions of Kämadevas.

ücus te 'yaà nu gopälo
vaàçé-vetre vinä prabhuù
itthaà vicärya manasä
nemuç cakruù stutià paräm


ücuù—said; te—they; ayam—He; nu—indeed; gopälaù—is Gopäla; vaàçé—a flute; vetre—and stick; vinä—without; prabhuù—the Lord; ittham—thus; vicärya—thinking; manasä—with their heart; nemuù—bowed down; cakruù—did; stutim—prayers; paräm—great.


They said, "He is Lord Gopäla, who has come without His flute and stick." Thinking in this way in their hearts, they bowed down and offered eloquent prayers.

varaà våëéta munayaù
çré-rämas tän uväca ha
yathä sétä tathä sarve
bhüyaù sma iti vädinaù


varam—a benediction; våëéta—please choose; munayaù—O sages; çré-rämaù—Çré Räma; tän—to them; uväca—said; ha—indeed; yathä—as; sétä—Sétä; tathä—so; sarve—all; bhüyaù sma—let us become; iti—thus; vädinaù—saying.


Çré Räma said to them, "O sages, please choose a benediction." They said, "As Sétä is, so let us all become."


Text 52


çré-räma uväca
yathä hi lakñmaëo bhrätä
tathä prärthyo varo yadi
adyaiva sa-phalo bhävyo
bhavadbhir mat-prasaìgataù


çré-rämaù uväca—Çré Räma said; yathä—as; hi—indeed; lakñmaëaù—Lakñmaëa; bhrätä—brother; tathä—so; prärthyaù—requested; varaù—benediction; yadi—if; adya—today; eva—indeed; sa-phalaù—fruitful; bhävyaù—will be; bhavadbhiù—by you; mat—of Me; prasaìgataù—by the association.


Çré Räma said: If you had asked this of My brother Lakñmaëa, I would arrange that today your wish would bear its fruit.


Text 53


sétä yatheti väkyena
durghaöo durlabho varaù
eka-patné-vrato 'haà vai
maryädä-puruñottamaù


sétä—Siätä; yathä—as; iti—thus; väkyena—by the statement; durghaöaù—impossible; durlabhaù—unattainable; varaù—benediction; eka—one; patné—wife; vrataù—vow; aham—I; vai—indeed; maryädä—of the rules of religion; puruña—of persons; uttamaù—the best.


This request, to become "as Sétä is" is impossible and can never be granted. I have vowed to accept only one wife, and I am the best of they who follow the rules of religion.

tasmät tu mad-vareëäpi
dväparänte bhaviñyatha
manorathaà kariñyämi
bhavatäà väïchitaà param


tasmät—therefore; tu—indeed; mat—of Me; vareëa—by the benediction; api—also; dväpara-ante—at the end of Dväpara-yuga; bhaviñyatha—you will become; manoratham—desire; kariñyämi—I will do; bhavatäm—of you; väïchitam—desired; param—then.


For this reason, by My benediciton, at the end of Dväpara-yuga you will become (as She). Then I will fulfill your wish.

iti datvä varaà rämas
tataù païcavatéà gataù
parëa-çälaà samäsädya
vana-väsaà cakära ha


iti—thus; datvä—having given; varam—benediction; rämaù—Räma; tataù—then; païcavatém—to the Païcavaté forest; gataù—went; parëa—of leaves; çälam—a cottage; samäsadya—attaining; vana—in the forest; väsam—residence; cakära—did; ha—indeed.


After giving this benediction, Räma went to Païcavaté. He went to a leaf-hut, and there He lived in the forest.


Text 56


tad-darçana-smara-rujaù
pulindyaù prema-vihvaläù
çrémat-päda-rajo dhåtvä
pränäàs tyaktuà samudyatäù


tat—of Him; darçana—by the sight; smara—with amorous desires; rujaù—agitated; pulindyaù—Pulinda girls; prema—with love; vihvaläù—overcome; çrémat—of the handsome Lord; päda—of the feet; rajaù—the dust; dhåtvä—holding; pränän—life; tyaktum—to abandon; samudyatäù—were ready.


When they saw Him, some aborigine girls became tortured with lust. Overcome with love, they grasped the dust of His feet, intent on then giving up their lives.


Text 57


brahmacäri-vapur bhütvä
rämas tatra samägataù
uväca präëa-santyägaà
mä küryata striyo våthä


brahmacäri—of a brahmacäri; vapuù—the form; bhütvä—becoming; rämaù—Räma; tatra—there; samägataù—went; uväca—said; präëa—of life; santyägam—giving up; mä—don't; küryata—do; striyaù—O women; våthä—uselessly.


Assuming the form of a brahmacäré, Räma went to them and said, "O women, do not give up your lives without good reason.


Text 58


våndävane dväparänte
bhavitä vo manorathaù
ity uktvä brahmacäré tu
tatraiväntarädhéyata


våndävane—in Våndävana; dväpara-ante—at the end of Dväpara-yuga; bhavitä—will become; vaù—of you; manorathaù—the desire; iti—thus; uktvä—saying; brahmacäré—the brahmacäré; tu—certainly; tatra—there; eva—indeed; antarädhéyata—disappeared.


"In Våndävana, at the end of Dväpara-yuga, your desire will be fulfilled." Saying this, the brahmacäré disappeared.


Text 59


atha rämo vänarendrai
rävaëädén niçäcarän
jitvä laìkäm etya sétä-
puñpakena puraà yayau


atha—then; rämaù—Räma; vänara—of monkeys; indraiù—with the kings; rävaëa-ädén—beginning with rävaëa; niçäcarän—demons, who move in the night; jitvä—defeating; laìkäm—Laìkä; etya—going; sétä—Sétä; puñpakena—on a flower-chariot; puram—to His own city; yayau—went.


Then, aided by the monkey-kings, Räma defeated the nocturnal demons headed by Rävaëa, entered Laìkä and, on a flower-chariot carrying Sétä, returned to His own city.


Text 60


sétäà tatyäja räjendro
vane lokäpavädataù
aho satäm api bhuvi
bhavanaà bhüri-duùkha-dam


sétäm—Sétä; tatyäja—renouncing; räja—of kings; indraù—the king; vane—in the forest; loka—of the people; apavädataù—because of the criticism; ahaù—ah; satäm—of the saintly devotees; api—also; bhuvi—in the world; bhavanam—manifestation; bhüri—great; duùkha—pain; dam—giving.


Then, because of the criticism of the ordinary people, Räma, the king of kings, abandoned Sétä in the forest. Ah, this brought great pain to the saintly devotees in the world.

yadä yadäkarod yajïaà
rämo rajéva-locanaù
tadä tadä svarëamayéà
sétäà kåtvä vidhänataù


yadä yadä—whenever; akarot—performed; yajïam—a sacrifice; rämaù—Räma; rajéva—lotus; locanaù—eyed; tadä—then; tadä—then; svarëamayém—golden; sétäm—Sétä; kåtvä—making; vidhänataù—according to the rules of religion.


Whenever he performed a yajïa, lotus-eyed Räma, following the rules of religion, had made a golden Deity of Sétä.


Text 62


yajïa-sétä-samüho 'bhün
mandire räghavasya ca
täç caitanya-ghanä bhütvä
rantuà rämaà samägataù


yajïa-sétä-samühaù—a multitude of these Deities; abhüt—was; mandire—in the palace; räghavasya—of Räma; ca—and; täù—they; caitanya-ghanä bhütvä—having come to life; rantum—to enjoy; rämam—to Räma; samägataù—went.


In Räma's palace there were many of these yajïa Deities of Sétä. (One day) they came to life and approached Räma to enjoy (with Him).


Text 63


tä äha raghu-vaàçendro
nähaà gåhnämi he priyäù
tadocus täù prema-parä
rämaà daçarathätmajam


täù—to them; äha—said; raghu-vaàça-indraù—the king of the Raghu dynasty; na—not; aham—I; gåhnämi—I accept; he—O; priyäù—O beloveds; tadä—then; ücuù—said; täù—they; prema-paräù—full of love; rämam—to Räma; daçaratha—of Daçaratha; ätmajam—the son.


To them Räma, the king of the Raghu dynasty, said, O beloved wives, I cannot accept you". Then, filled with love, they said to Räma, the son of Daçaratha, . . .


Text 64


kathaà cäsmän na gåhnäsi
bhajantér maithiléù satéù
ardhäìgé yajïa-käleñu
satataà kärya-sädhinéù


katham—why?; ca—and; asmän—us; na—not; gåhnäsi—You accept; bhajantéù—the worshiping; maithiléù satéù—chaste women of Mithilä; ardha—half; aìgé—Your body; yajïa—of the yajïa; käleñu—at the times; satatam—always; kärya-sädhinéù—performing duties with You.


. . . "Why do You not accept us? We are all Sétä, the chaste daughter of the king of Mithilä. We are half of Your body. At the time of the yajïas we were Your assistants.


Text 65


dharmiñöhas tvaà çruti-dharo
'dharmavad bhäñase katham
karaà gåhitvä tyajasi
tataù päpam aväpsyasi


dharmiñöhaù—religious; tvam—You; çruti-dharaù—aware of the teachings of the Vedas; adharmavat—like an impious person; bhäñase—You speak; katham—why?; karam—hand; gåhitvä—taking; tyajasi—You reject; tataù—then; päpam—sin; aväpsyasi—You will
attain.


"You are a pious person. You know the teaching of the Vedas. Why do You speak as one who is impious? First You take our hand and then You reject us. From this You will incur sin."


Text 66


çré-räma uväca
samécénaà vacaù satyaà
yuñmäbhir gaditaà ca me
eka-patné-vrato 'haà hi
räjarñiù sétayaikayä


çré-rämaù uväca—Çré Räma said; samécénam—right; vacaù—statement; satyam—truth; yuñmäbhiù—by you; gaditam—said; ca—also; me—of Me; eka—one; patné—wife; vrataù—vow; aham—I; hi—Indeed; räja—king; åñiù—sage; sétayä—by Sétä; ekayä—alone.


Çré Räma said: Your words are right. What you say to Me is true. (Still,) I am religious king, and I have vowed to accept only Sétä as My wife.

tasmäd yüyaà dväparänte
puëye våndävane vane
bhaviñyathä kariñyämi
yuñmäkaà tu manoratham


tasmät—therefore; yüyam—you; dväpara—of Dväpara-yuga; ante—at the end; puëye—spiritual; våndävane—in Våndävana; vane—forest; bhaviñyatha—you will be; kariñyämi—I will do; yuñmäkam—of you; tu—certainly; manoratham—the desire.


Therefore at the end of Dväpara-yuga you will take birth in the spiritual land of Våndävana, and there I will fulfill your desire.

tä vraje 'pi bhaviñyanti
yajïa-sétäç ca gopikäù
anyäsäà caiva gopénäà
lakñaëaà çåëu tad vidhe


tç—they;a vraje—in Vraja; api—and; bhaviñyanti—will be; yajïa-sétäù—the yajï-sétäs; ca—also; gopikäù—gopés; anyäsäm—of other; ca—also; eva—indeed; gopénäm—gopés; lakñaëam—characteristics; çåëu—please hear; tat—that; vidhe—O Brahmä.


These yajïa Deities of Sétä will also become gopés in Vraja. Now hear, O Brahmä, of the other gopés.
