The Story of the Demigoddesses

gopénäà varëanaà çåëu

bhakti-vardhanam uttamam
atha—now; deväìganänäm—of the demigoddesses;
ca—and; gopénäm—of ther gopés; varëanam—the
description; çåëu—please hear;
catuñpadärthadam—giving the four goals of life; nåëäm—of the
people; bhakti-vardhanam—increasing devotion;
uttamam—great.
Now please hear the story of the demigoddesses that became
gopés, a story that grants the four goals of life and increases
one's love for Lord Kåñëa.

babhüva mälave deçe
gopo nando divas-patiù
bhäryä-sahasra-samyukto
dhanavän nétimän paraù
babhüva—was; mälave deçe—in Malava-desa; gopaù—a
gopa; nandaù—Nanda; divas-patiù—king; bhäryä—of
wives; sahasra—a thousand; samyuktaù—with;
dhanavän—wealthy; nétimän—moral; paraù—great.
In Mälava-deça there was a great gopa-king named Nanda-
divaspati. He was righteous and wealthy, and he had a thousand
wives.

tértha-yäträ-prasaìgena
mathuräyäà samägataù
nanda-räjaà vrajädhéçaà
çrutvä çré-gokulaà yayau
tértha-yäträ-prasaìgena—by going on pilgrimage;
mathuräyäm—in Mathyra; samägataù—come; nanda-räjam—to
King Nanda; vrajädhéçam—the king of Vraja;
çrutvä—hearing; çré-gokulam—Çré Gokula; yayau—went.
As he was going on pilgrimage, he arrived in Mathurä. When he heard of Vraja's King Nanda, he went to Gokula.

militvä gopa-räjaà sa
dåñövä våndävana-çriyam
nanda-räjäjïayä tatra
väsaà cakre mahä-manäù
militvä—meeting; gopa-räjam—the gopa king;
sa—he; dåñövä—seeing; våndävana-çriyam—the beauty of
Våndävana; nanda-räja—of King Nanda; äjïayä—by the request; tatra—there;
väsam—residence; cakre—made; mahä-manäù—noble-hearted.
He met King Nanda, and he saw the beauty of Våndävana. With
Nanda's permission, the noble-hearted king made his residence
there.

yojana-dvayam äçritya
ghoñaà cakre gaväà punaù
mudaà präpa vraje räjan
jïätibhiù sa divas-patiù
yojana-dvayam—sixteen miles; äçritya—taking
shelter; ghoñam—a place for the cows; cakre—did; gaväm—of cows; punaù—again; mudam—happiness;
präpa—attained; vraje—in vraja; räjan—O king;
jïätibhiù—with relatives; sa—he; divas-
patiù—Divaspati.
Having made a sixteen-mile place for his cows, King
Divaspati and his relatives lived happily.

tasya devala-väkyena
sarvä devajana-striyaù
jätäù kanyä mahä-divyä
jvalad-agni-çikhopmäù
tasya—of him; devala-väkyena—by the words of Devala
Muni; sarvä—all; devajana-striyaù—the
demigoddesses; jätäù—born; kanyä—girls; mahä-
divyä—very splendid; jvalad-agni-çikhopmäù—like flames of a
blazing fire.
By Devala Muni's words, all the demigoddesses were born as
his daughters, daughters splendid like flames in a blazing fire.

çré-kåñëaà sundaraà dåñövä
mohitäù kanyakäç ca täù
dämodarasya präpty-arthaà
cakrur mägha-vrataà param
çré-kåñëam—Çré Kåñëa; sundaram—handsome;
dåñövä—seeing; mohitäù—enchanted; kanyakäç—the
daughters; ca—and; täù—they; dämodarasya—of
Kåñëa; präpty-artham—to attain; cakruù—did;
mägha-vratam—the magha-vrata vow; param—great.
When they saw handsome Kåñëa they were bewildered with love
for Him. To attain Him they performed the great vow of Mägha-
vrata.

ardhodaye 'rke yamunäà
nityaà snätvä vrajäìganäù
uccair jaguù kåñëa-léläà
premänanda-samäkuläù
ardhodaye—half-risen; arke—when the sun was;
yamunäm—in the Yamunä; nityam—regularly;
snätvä—bathing; vrajäìganäù—the girls ofVraja;
uccaiù—loudly; jaguù—sang; kåñëa-léläm—of Kåñëa's
pastimes; premänanda-samäkuläù—overcome with love.
As they bathed at sunrise in the Yamunä, these girls of
Vraja, who had fallen in love with Kåñëa, every day loudly sang
of Lord Kåñëa's pastimes.
Text 9
täsäà prasannaù çré-kåñëo
varaà brühéty uväca ha
tä ücus taà paraà natvä
kåtäïjali-puöäù çanaiù
täsäm—with them; prasannaù—pleased; çré-
kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; varam—boon; brühi—please ask;
iti—thus; uväca —said;ha tä—indeed;
ücuù—said; tam—to Him; param—then; natvä—bowing
down; kåtäïjali-puöäù—with folded hands;
çanaiù—slowly.
Pleased with them, Lord Kåñëa said to them, "Please
ask for a benediction." Slowly bowing down with folded hands,
these girls spoke to Kåñëa.

çré-gopya ücuù
yogéçvaräëäà kila durlabhas tvaà
sarveçvaraù käraëa-käraëo 'si
tvaà netra-gämé bhävatät sadä no
vaàsi-dharo manmatha-manmathäìgaù
çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; yogéçvaräëäm—of the
masters of yoga; kila—indeed; durlabhaù—difficult to
attain; tvam—You; sarveçvaraù—the Lord of all;
käraëa-käraëaù—the cause of causes; asi—are;
tvam—You; netra-gämé—come before the eyes;
bhävatät—have; sadä—always; naù—of us; vaàsi-
dharaù—holding a flute; manmatha-manmathäìgaù—more handsome
than Kämadeva.
The gopés said: Even the great kings of the yogés cannot
attain You. You are the master of all, the first cause of all
causes. Holding a flute, and more handsome than Kämadeva, please
always stay before our eyes.
Text 11
tathästu coktvä harir ädi-devas
täsäà tu yo darçanam ätatäna
bhüyät sadä te hådi netra-märge
tathä sa ähüta iväçu citte
tathä—so; astu—be it; ca—and;
uktvä—saying; hariù—Kåñëa; ädi-devaù—the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; täsäm—of them; tu—indeed; yaù—who; darçanam—the sight; ätatäna—gave;
bhüyät—greatly; sadä—always; te—they; hådi—in
the heart; netra-märge—on the poathway of the eyes;
tathä—so; sa—he; ähüta—called; iva—like;
äçu—at once; citte—in the heart.
Lord Kåñëa said, "So be it." He was always before
them. He appeared in their heart and He appeared before their
eyes as if they had just called Him.

paripürëatamaù säkñäc
chré-kåñëo nänya eva hi
eka-käryärtham ägatya
koöi-käryaà cakära ha
paripürëatamaù—the original Supreme Personality of
Godhead; säkñät—directly; çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; na—not; anyaù—another; eva—indeed;
hi—indeed; eka-käryärtham—for one purpose;
ägatya—coming; koöi-käryam—millions of purposes;
cakära—did; ha—indeed.
Çré Kåñëa, and no one else, is the original Supreme
Personality of Godhead. Coming to this world to do one thing, He
did millions of other things as well.

parikaré-kåta-péta-paöaà harià
çikhi-kiréöa-naté-kåta-kandharam
lakuöa-veëu-karaà cala-kuëòalaà
paöutaraà naöa-veña-dharaà bhaje
parikaré-kåta-péta-paöam—wearing a yellow sash;
harim—Kåñëa; çikhi-kiréöa—a peacock-feather crown;
naté-kåta—graceful; kandharam—shoulders; lakuöa-veëu-
karam—holding a stick and a flute; cala-kuëòalam—with
swinging earrings; paöutaram—very intelligent; naöa-
veña-dharam—dressed as a dancer; bhaje—I worship.
I worship most intelligent Kåñëa who, with a peacock-feather
crown, swinging earrings, a yellow sash about His waist, and a
stick and flute in His hand, is dressed as a graceful-shouldered
dancer.
Text 14
bhaktyaiva vaçyo harir ädi-devaù
sadä pramäëaà kila cätra gopyaù
saìkhyaà ca yogaà na kåtaà kadäpi
premëaiva yasya prakåtià gatäù syuù
bhaktyä—by devotional service; eva—indeed;
vaçyaù—made submissive; hariù—Kåñëa; ädi-devaù—the
Supreme Personality of Godhead; sadä—always;
pramäëam—evidence; kila—kindeed; ca—and;
atra—here; gopyaù—gopés; saìkhyam—saìkhyam;
ca—and; yogam—yoga; na—not; kåtam—did;
kadäpi—ever; premëä—with love; eva—indeed;
yasya—of whom; prakåtim—nature; gatäù—attained;
syuù—did.
Çré Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is conquered
by love and devotion. These gopés are the proof of this. Although
they never followed the paths of yoga or saìkhya, they attained
Lord Kåñëa's company.
